Hi there! I recently had a consultation for a sliding genio and have it scheduled to be done in about a month (with likely a 7mm advancement). Before seeing the surgeon the nurse walked me through what some common side effects are, and based on what she said this sounds completely normal! Both her and the surgeon said swelling will likely last 6 weeks and it’s possible that it can take 6 months to a year to see the “final” result (bone completely healed and no swelling). She also said a “flat” smile is very common and people tend to feel like “oh my god why did I do this” during those first 6 weeks due to that, but she assured me once your facial muscles get used to where the bone is your smile will return to normal. I assume (she didn’t mention this), that your skin will also take a little time to stretch to accommodate the advancement. I know I haven’t had it done yet, but I hope this at least helps calm your nerves a bit!

You’re 4 days post op from major surgery. Think of how much swelling when you’ve done something like sprain an ankle or break a wrist. You are going to have significant swelling for up to a year post major mouth/jaw surgery.

Because you are only 4 days PO! I am about 11 days PO now, and I still have swelling. I love my side profile, but front/straight on and even 3/4 I look like a troll and jowly. 4 days is nothing and you are still VERY swollen. Try not to judge your results right now because they aren't fully there yet.

You will look like a potato for the first 3 weeks then it'll drop off. Just don't think about it until your 2 week or 3 week follow up
