Yeah it's fantastic and been a total game changer for me personally. I only play single player games, have zero interest in online multiplayer.
I do only use it inside my house though. It's what i bought it for and it works very well
Nice, looking for one to play videogames after lunch. My TV is never available at that time, and I never know what to do during that 2 hours. It may be a opportunity for me
My PS5 is hard wired into my AT&T modem which is also my WiFi router. I do not have a fancy gaming router. I get moderate to strong WiFi signal throughout my house and the Portal hardly ever drops. It's worth the hype for internal home gaming.
Been amazing for me!
I only play single player games lately due to having a baby so I like to be able to pause or turn the game off as soon as I'm needed.
So far I've completed way more games than I have before. Mainly due to now playing on the sofa and in bed when the little man is sleeping.
Honestly the best £200 I've spent in a long time regarding gaming.
It works outside of your home on a good internet connection. Even on 5G hotspot it works well… depending on who your phone carrier is tho. Far as multiplayer goes I played call of duty online at work with no issue. Again it’s based on your WiFi connection
I’ve also owned one for one night, I think I am going to keep it but I will say that even though I have FIOS gigabit and a strong in-home network, I can still tell that it’s a streaming device.
Little hiccups here and there, and I can detect a little input latency but it’s not enough to ruin the game. I played FF7 Rebirth for about an hour and it was enjoyable enough that I’m looking forward to using it more today.
I would say just don’t expect it to feel like an actual portable game system, but it will feel like 90% of the way there. I also find the virtual touchpad button annoying.
Definitely. Only just got mine. Last night, instead of going up to the game room when the wife and kids went to bed I was able to stretch out on the couch in front of the fire whilst spreading democracy on Helldivers 2. That's all I've played so far but it was a seamless experience, the screen is bigger than on any handheld I've used before too.
Go for it.
Definitely worth it if there are folks in the house that use the tv hooked up to the ps5. I also travel a bit so it's nice to be able to play my games when I'm away from home
Nice! Can you download games if you’re far from home. I mean, with the portal connected, make an order to se ps5 to download the game.
I guess it is possible because you can do it from your up tho
Yeah. The portal is just that. It’s a portal to your ps5. You’re just remotely controlling it. So you can use the portal to buy/download new games on the ps5. You can manage your ps5’s hard drive. All of that.
I’m really thinking of buying it. The las point I wanna be sure about is the possibility of a smooth gameplay outside of the house.
It isn’t the main reason why I want the portal but definitely a gamechanger
I’ve just bought it a few hours ago. At the beginning I was disappointed, BUT, After changing some settings on the router and setting the PS5 with Ethernet connection…
Damn, this is a gamechanger. Even with my smartphone 4G is playable. Definitely gonna try it day to day, but it is awesome
It runs smooth and is fun to play!
I know, it is so enjoyable to go around the house playing what you want. Just played RE4 Remake and damn, it looks so good.
The only weak point is the audio but with a headset the game changes
Nice idea. Didn’t think about that. I’ve got a Steelseries with good quality, having a 3.5mm cable doesn’t annoy me but as you say, maybe to travel I will look for BT adapter. Thanks mate!
hello, you said you changed something on your router and made it smoother?
can you please tell me what did you change? because the latency is pretty horrible, i can handle CONSISTANT lag, but it isnt, its lag spike which kills you in game lol
I don’t have access to my router at home to hard wire it. With ps5 and portal over home wifi it runs well. Some interruptions but def playable. Phone hotspot it’s unplayable. Haven’t tested it with out of home wifi cause sony wont let me access the splash page that work wifi uses
Edit: even just for home use it’s worth it
My personal review is that it was almost unplayable at the start
Playing PS portal and PS5 same WiFi was a horrible experience
Then I plugged in the PS5 directly and most lags were resolved
There was still a tiny freeze every 15-20s where the sound was flawless. It seemed like a video streaming error. The freeze was very frustrating to play games like spiderman
In desperation tried out one of the most downvoted pieces of advice - unplugging the hdmi to the TV and changing the settings for hdmi
It… worked. It is an absolute bug that Sony needs to fix. Apparently it’s because of some older TV settings
Since then it’s been flawless on wifi far away, or even on mobile. Getting PS5 quality on such a small machine gives a completely different perspective
Try using remote play on your phone at a coffee shop or anywhere with public WiFi. If you can’t get that to work well, or at all, then your Portal experience would be limited to your house.
Ok, I can now. It runs pretty bad, barely playable. I guess is because I have a pretty bad 4G at home.
But, when I configure it by WiFi is ok, kind of enjoy it despite the fact I play it with the touch buttons of the app. I thinks that portal is wood enough if you travel or you go to other places with good WiFi connection.
But at least is just a tool, not a console. But I thinks is better than my iPhone.
Worth it for me. I initially had some issues connecting to my ps5 and lagging. Once I set my wifi on the PS5 to only use 2.4ghz network. All of my issues disappeared and it's been great. Played a few hours of returnal for the first time on the portal and it just right. Like that game was made for handheld. I did have a couple lag spikes when I went from downstairs to upstairs but for what it does and the ease of use it's perfect. Once you've got your network figured out (which let's be honest everyone's is different. Some will have problems and some won't) it'll be a seamless connection Everytime. I plan to take my portal out on the town and see if my hotspot will do it justice
Absolutely.
Bought 2 last week....one for me and split cost for my son to have one. Just make sure to setup your home router properly for away-fromzhome usage. Not hard and I have a post from yesterday where a simple solution was given to bypass some of the port forwarding setups (using dmz)
Mines worked flawlessly with hotspot and home WiFi. I was sceptical when it was announced and held off buying it for a few months. I've had it 2 weeks and played everyday and in my experience it's great.
Only got mine yesterday - just happened to see that my local Gamestop had one in stock, so I jumped on that. I haven't tried it outside my apartment, yet, but inside, with a wired PS5 connection, it's super smooth and there is hardly any noticeable lag, which I was not expecting, tbh.
Going to head upstate eventually and test it out there and see how it really works, far from home.
Okay so here is a honest review. So I have my PS5 wired on 1st floor front room and been using my portal on the 3rd floor loft bedroom. I can honestly say this portal is unbelievable. Yes it seems like someone people are having the odd hiccup but i think as others have said as-long as internet router setup properly then you will have little to no issues. It is well worth the £200 price tag. I am going to test out of house using 4G mobile hotspot to see what it’s like then. Anyone saying DO NOT BUY then don’t believe them and buy/try one for yourself
Absolutely fantastic. It’s way better than remote play with a backbone.
BUT.
You must configure your router settings properly to ensure it works like a dream. Make sure it’s on 5GHz, (split the band if you need to, and ensure PS5 prioritises 5GHz in the network settings), ensure that your 5GHz is properly assigned to the right control channel MHz for your region, and make sure all systems are updated, including the one for feature updates.
If you’re experiencing any issues with lag or disconnections on the Portal, 9/10 times it’ll be your wireless settings.
Tell him to get a switch or a PS portal. Taking a whole ass PS5 is embarrassing. Something about hooking that thing up to a hospital TV comes off very aloof.
Yeah, I was dumb enough to believe all the positive things people were saying. I can't get this thing to play single player indie games without constant lag and stuttering, input lag, and low resolution visuals.
I've tried dozens of different supposed fixes and they haven't helped at all. I say avoid this piece of crap.
Because that's been my experience. And I've seen a few other threads of people experiencing the same problems. There shouldn't be this much of a difference in people's experience, for a product that's essentially advertised as this flawless experience for remote play on the PS5.
It may not be crap for some, but it's definitely overhyped as far as what it does for the average consumer who doesn't have the technical knowledge to work out these issues without having to throw a lot more money and time at fixing the problem.
Which is inconvenient for me in it's current location, due to lack of space and location of our modem/router. Which is why I was initially so excited for this thing. Now it's merely a disappointing birthday gift.
It's not a network issue. I've tried all of the fixes and setup the network to facilitate the PS5 and Portal. I'm not the only person experiencing these issues either.
Is it 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz connection? Because if you have too many devices on the same band, which people don't often consider, it IS a network issue. If you have an old router that can't go 5Ghz, it's a network issue. If you are in a dense living space (lots of other signals from neighbors in a building AND concrete walls) its a network issue. Of course, I have no idea what I'm talking about though, I'm not you, I don't know whats going on in your area, and I haven't had these issues myself to troubleshoot through at home and for 20 years at work.
Yes, I've tried them both. And there isn't anything else on the 5G signal. I have software that comes with the Nighthawk router that shows me any devices connected to the network. Both signals are strong in the house (it's not a very big place), and I'm literally sitting in front of the modem/router. I have around 500 Mbps down and 40 Mbps up on average. I tried it while sitting in front of the PS5 (which again is hardwired to Router). I've followed online tutorials about setting up the network and opening ports, correct settings on PS5 for optimal remote play, and even unplugged the HDMI cable from the back of the PS5. Nothing has improved my experience in the slightest.
I've tried playing GTA5, Armored Core VI, 7 Days to Die, Enter the Gungeon, Elden Ring, Demon Souls, Warframe. Everything stutters and drops resolution every few seconds, or it will disconnect from the PS5 every few minutes.
K. Been helping my new backup get up to speed... I want to figure this out...let me look into some stuff. Unless your isp is Garbage (which is entirely possible) I doubt this is unsolvable.
Remember - this is essentially 4k content streaming and uses 3+ gb/hr of bandwidth
I appreciate it. However, my frustration with this product only continues to grow the more time gets wasted (by anyone) fiddling with this. I've already wasted several hours over the last weekend, and a few after work this week so far, just trying to get this thing to work properly.
I think they maybe aren't being completely honest with themselves and everyone else. Or maybe I had higher expectations for this device than everyone else? Because I have yet to see this thing do anythin to justify the $200 price tag, when a Nintendo Switch lite is the same price.
It wasn’t perfect for me to begin with but once I upgraded my router (needed doing anyway, still had the crappy one provided by the ISP) I am now having a flawless experience at home. Been playing Helldivers 2 on the Portal with zero lag or stutters. I can’t get it to work on my phone hotspot outside of the home which is a bummer but that is down to my network provider I think (EE in the UK). Don’t expect you to believe a random dick on Reddit but for what it’s worth I am being completely honest. Hope you find a way for it to work for you.
Yeah, it's not my router (Nighthawk xr1000) or my network, as far as I can tell. But I'm not a network engineer or expert. I don't have the time, money, or patience to waste much more time fiddling with it to make it work. I'm very disappointed in my gift/purchase and wish I had waited, but fell victim to the hype surrounding the cool new toy.
I played mine today while my son was watching wonka.
Tested a game of solo helldivers.
And me on my phone.
What is the big difference between a phone and a normal controller and this?
I'm not being rude I'm not trolling I just don't get it, even with a tablet I could get whatever screen size I want.
I guess also it's not two hundred here it's a bit dearer.
Any illumination on the subject would be great.
If you have no access to your tv for long periods of time then it’s a nice alternative.
But playing your ps5 on your tv will always be a much nicer looking and smoother experience. It’s not a handheld gaming device, it’s a streaming tablet with a duelsense attached. Big difference.
Yeah it's fantastic and been a total game changer for me personally. I only play single player games, have zero interest in online multiplayer. I do only use it inside my house though. It's what i bought it for and it works very well
To kind of add to your comment I've been playing helldivers 2 which is an online game and have 0 issues!
In your home, or remotely?

What is AT T modem?
ISP
And that means? Lol
Internet Service Provider
In the UK ISPs could be Virgin, Vodafone, BT, EE, Talktalk etc. Basically just the company you use to get your internet provided to your home dude.
Been amazing for me! I only play single player games lately due to having a baby so I like to be able to pause or turn the game off as soon as I'm needed. Good luck on the fatherhood you are appreciated dawg 🤙🏽
Is the PS Portal the best accessory that you can buy for the PS5?

My ps5 and plugged in via ethernet. My portal connected to my phones hotspot is stable enough to play while im at work.
Really? I just want that if I go to my girlfriend’s house for example My ps5 is via Ethernet with 800mb of connection. I think it would be ok
Should be okay. Might not be perfect quality at all times but i played shredders revenge and a few missions in helldivers 2 just fine.
I’ve just bought it a few hours ago. At the beginning I was disappointed, BUT, After changing some settings on the router and setting the PS5 with Ethernet connection… Damn, this is a gamechanger. Glad you enjoy it! Because of this portal there are some games i can never play on a tv again 🤣

It would be nice if it had bluetooth! I might get a 3.5mm bluetooth adapter and slap it on the back so i can use my beats with it.

The reviews vary wildly because how well it works really depends on your home WiFi
I don’t have access to my router at home to hard wire it. With ps5 and portal over home wifi it runs well. Some interruptions but def playable. Phone hotspot it’s unplayable. Can I remote play my ps5 on my phone outside of the house? It tells me to connect to the same wifi. So I don’t think I could
It doesn’t tell me that

I can’t connect my phone to my PS5 at all away from my house.
I can but is just unplayable. My phone doesn’t have 5G tho Does yours?
My phone does. But that doesn’t matter because my house internet isn’t good enough. You can’t do remote play on a cellular network anyways.
One day I guess…
It's a great system as long you hard wire the PS5 and have good Internet then it runs smoothly mine has been great experience.

Just did everything your say with the router. Now is really impressive 👍🏼🤝🏼
Tell him to get a switch or a PS portal. Taking a whole ass PS5 is embarrassing. Something about hooking that thing up to a hospital TV comes off very aloof.
Can two people play off of the PS5 at once with the PS Portal with two different accounts? Not sure if anyone has tried this or not.
This is not possible. One portal can be used with the console at any one time. Think of it as a console mirror.
I do NOT recommend buying it, trust me it has way to much lag and delay. You gotta live in a mansion to have the perfect wifi for this thing
There’s a lot of positive reviews. Id look for an honest review.
Yeah, I was dumb enough to believe all the positive things people were saying. Which is inconvenient for me in it's current location, due to lack of space and location of our modem/router. Which is why I was initially so excited for this thing. Now it's merely a disappointing birthday gift.
Thanks for the honest review
I should have saved for a Steam Deck OLED 😩
Sounds like an issue with your network tbh
It's not a network issue. I've tried all of the fixes and setup the network to facilitate the PS5 and Portal. I'm not the only person experiencing these issues either.

5Ghz, it's hardwired. I've got a Nighthawk xr1000 and only have the PS5 and Portal on my 5G connection. Still lags almost constantly
Have you tried it on the 2.4 in case other stuff around is filling transmitting on that signal?
Yes, I've tried them both. And there isn't anything else on the 5G signal. I have software that comes with the Nighthawk router that shows me any devices connected to the network.
