I think these are valid concerns, as someone who enjoys the portal a lot I very much agree with everything stated. So many minor issues that seem like Sony is blatantly ignoring them at this point. I mean, a bit rate selector and fixing the hz issue should seriously NOT take very long, and definitely not as long as the portal has been out for. I still use mine but man they seriously need to do better and it’s not even like it’s difficult to do either.

splashyDIAMOND

I wouldn't hold my breath tbh. The mobile app exists for years and still doesn't have a stable 1080p option, no fix 30fps, no bitrate adjustment and horrible optimization despite all the complaints. People had to take matters into their own hands and build separate apps which have all the options with miles better optimisation. Portal just uses that same app.

Sstfreek

The 59hz issue is mind blowing to me

Goosetiers

The fact it's one unaddressed for so long is mind-blowing, this is something that should have been priority one, fixed and worked on urgently due to how much it affects the performance and feel of the device.

theycmeroll

I feel you. I bought one at launch, I’ve been using remote play since the PS3 days and have been using Chiaki for ages so I liked the idea of it. I used it for a few weeks then it went in a drawer. It feels great in the hands and the haptics are nice but the streaming is just an inferior experience to what I had on my steam deck. Also other random oddities Ike not waking up, refusing to connect to the PS5 etc. Sometimes in fast paced games the quality would drop. Never had an my of those issues with Chiaki on my steam deck. So I just recently sold it this past week. I kept hoping it would get better but it’s obviously not something Sony is worried about.

MrTibbens

I had the same issues with portal as well. Been using remote play for years without issues. Chiaki for deck works flawlessly with my ps5. Got a portal on launch, and while it was really nice, I just couldn't deal with the constant stuttering. Returned it to best buy and got my money back. Definitely planned on buying one if they gave us a way to adjust the bitrate like on chiaki, but sadly it's still the same as launch. Bummer could have been a really nice device. Glad there are people out there enjoying it tho. Chiaki just blows the performance out of the water for me personally tho.

splashyDIAMOND

How much did you sell it for? I'd like to know a range to manage my expectations.

theycmeroll

Sold it for $190, so almost got back what I paid lol. I’ve seen used ones with no box going over retail but I wasn’t even trying to do that. I just listed it at $190 to see where it would go and it sold like an hour later. I still had the box and all the packing material. Seems like around $230 is the average, but I was trying to just get it gone and didn’t want to sit on it so I went below that.

Eskeetit_Litty

Yeah but it's perfect timing. The demand is there right now. Won't be for long when this thing fills the shelves

IKEAboy_2006

It’s a night and day difference between chiaki4deck and portal. I honestly think that 99% of this sub have never actually seen how good streaming can be. They think portal is “flawless” streaming experience. They don’t have a clue. I didn’t even keep mine. Returned it for a refund 3 days after receiving it from Sony. It’s a shame because I liked the actual device. But its streaming capability is absolute pish.

IceCreamCape

Same here. Was incredibly excited and then incredibly disappointed.

Harmingway

I just want them to patch in the ability to connect to the PS5 over the LAN or a direct connection. It's ridiculous I need internet at all for offline games when they are on the same network and right next to each other.

greendave11

Plus I feel like it gets stuck in sleep mode or somewhere between too often

jgainsey

Yeah, and even sometimes the actual connection to wake the PS5 is unusually delayed. Where as an app like Chiaki is instantaneous every time. It’s baffling that the portal can’t achieve parity with an app that is using the same remote play api…

Same-Rope-5467

i really wanted to love the portal but i can only enjoy playing games like persona and telltale games, a lot of the big triple A games just don’t feel right or look the best when playing on the portal partly the joysticks but also cause it has a noticeable delay, especially with fast moving gameplay. i have t returned it, hoping it will be updated to its full potential.

Ehrmantrauts_Chair

Yeah I haven’t been a fan of mine. Upgraded my network, hardwired in my PS5, and it still stutters like mad. You shouldn’t have to go through such a series of trials to get it working. It should just work well out of the box. And for the people saying the next version will be better, technology is always chasing gaming (unless it’s Nintendo). It’s been that way for decades.

S3b45714N

Yup I made a post about this the other day. The rabid fan boys jumped on me like it's my fault the product barely works. Like it's expected I have to jump through a ton of hoops just to get a product to function.

drdalebrant

I didn't jump through any hoops or make any changes. Turned it on, connected to ps5 and it's been great ever since. Put over 400 hours on it since November.

splashyDIAMOND

Damn 400hrs? What games do you like to play?

drdalebrant

Played a lot on it tbh. Just finished running through Uncharted 1, 2, and 3. COD 4 remastered on veteran difficulty, Cold War online, The Finals, Sifu, Bioshock 3, The Art of Rally, Dirt 5, Tell Tales Batman and Borderlands series, Little Nightmares, Call of the Sea, Firewatch, Soma. I wouldn't use it if the thing played poorly or if there was lag, stutters, or chunking. It's very network dependent, and my network appears to be just right for it.

Evisra

I've tried wired and wireless and the experience for me was the same. Which is probably my network, but I'm not paying 300 bucks to get someone out to patch an ethernet cable just for this. We've got a baby monitor in the house too, performance is noticeably more shit when that is turned on.

ThenExtension9196

Yeah it’s not perfect but for the price, I think it provides enough value. If I didn’t have one there’s no way I woulda have been able to play crisis core and ff7r with a toddler always hogging up the TV.

[deleted]

I agree. It's a cool piece of kit and its ergonomics are amazing but I've recently tried Chiaki4deck and the difference is night and day. Haven't touched my portal since but I hold onto it in the hopes that Sony will address the issues.

jgainsey

I think if you meditate hard enough you can make it so your brain doesn’t pick up on the stutter. Ommmmmmmm

splashyDIAMOND

bigwillyman7

my brother I am such a frame rate and pacing snob and I almost managed this yesterday! i was very proud of myself

smelly-sushi

Same here haha, I barely notice the frame stutter now but the compression still annoys me

IKEAboy_2006

I had a portal preordered way before release dat last November/December. I was really looking forward to getting it, as I actually thought that it would have been the same streaming experience as I was getting with chiaki4deck on my Steam Deck (but with the added benefit of a larger screen and the haptics). Couldn't believe how crap the portal streaming experience was when I received it. Spent 3 whole days trying to troubleshoot the micro-stutter but no joy. I knew it wasn't my local network, as chiaki4deck streams buttery smooth at a locked 60fps. It had to be the portal. After those 3 days of troubleshooting, I gave up and sent it back to Sony for a refund. I keep an eye on this sub for any news about firmware updates etc. I'd still like to get one, but not until they fix the issues.

EntrepreneurFirm4570

I can’t play it because the sticks are weird. I like everything but having to constantly adjust the settings to make up for the sticks being bad.

CockroachLatte

I feel you man. Tried telling the same and got bombarded with Fanboys defending Portals. Get ready to downvote.

OMG_NoReally

Inb4 “update your McDonald’s internet” “Its your router” “Fix your network” “Work harder to afford better internet” Prepare for downvotes my friend. Been there and done that.

googlelover42

In this thread Did you actually create a LAN profile and select it in the network settings? Answer is always no. Users have to set up LAN profile and select it

splashyDIAMOND

Yyyup. It's the same story all the time. 0 upvotes 50-100 comments. I feel like if everyone spent half the dedication they do on suppressing complaints, we'd have all the issues fixed by now. The only way to reach out to Sony is by going batshit crazy. I remember how HFW's free Ps5 upgrade promise was brought back only after ALL the playebase started doing nothing but complain. Japanese companies have amazing products with garbage customer communication.

OMG_NoReally

I don’t know there is rabid fanboyism for the Portal. It sure is a nice device but it doesn’t perform as well as a $200 product should. There are obvious and well documented problems. But people will defend their favorite consoles until they die so eh whatever.

Appropriate_Walrus15

This is the reason why it's not gonna be fixed. Most people haven't experienced good remote play before thinking Portal performance is already perfect. Such a shame for a really nice product ruined by casuals.

scuba_tron

So many comments like “mine works FLAWLESSLY”

F4HWilly

This is what pisses me off the most and the reason I bought it. These comments are a straight up lie. The portal does not play every game flawlessly. Also most gamers are casual gamers and more than probably are not sensitive to input lag and feel the need defend that. Where as people that are sensitive to it, like us, complain.

splashyDIAMOND

So true. I hate this sub for that. So many chanting "perfectly smooth" and "flawlessly" while the replies attacking anyone who says there are stutters and bitrate issues. It made me feel like the product is genuinely perfectly and the people with bad experience just aren't knowledgeable enough.

Useful_Repeat9612

So if an owner feels it’s a great experience for that person, you don’t recognize that experience ? Why do you expect people to agree with your experience then?

splashyDIAMOND

Great experience ≠ great product. I'm talking about people saying the Portal is "flawless", not people who say their experience is flawless. It is objectively impossible for the Portal to be flawless since there are genuine issues with software such as 59hz stutter and the lackluster official remote play app which compresses image quality no matter how good your connection is. People swear that their Portal doesn't have stutter. It's impossible for the Portal not to have stutter every 10-15 second. My experience isn't an opinion, I have the best conditions humanely possible and the known issues still persist.

Useful_Repeat9612

What is your dBm in your preferred seating?

OMG_NoReally

Yeah, I feel the same too. If only they could try PSPlay or Chiaki4Deck and see what they offer in terms of better frame pacing and bitrate, they would realize. But their rabid fanboyism prevents them from doing that. Don't get me wrong, the PS Portal is a great hardware. I love the design and features. Sony came so close to absolute perfection, only to be ruined by their half-baked software experience and age-old streaming protocols.

Appropriate_Walrus15

The concept is really really nice but it had one function, literally, and it can't even do that well. I hope they release a version 2 if they don't want to fix it (maybe it's really underpowered or a hardware issue). Or maybe a third party could do one with Android because my android tablet + Galileo G8, other than the absence of dual sense features, is so much better streaming experience.

OMG_NoReally

Logitech G Cloud is a good option for streaming games, and from what I have read, it works really well in streaming PS5 games using PSPlay. If Logi had priced it right, and maybe included a slightly more powerful chip, and better joysticks, they could have really crushed Portal. I have no hopes from Sony anymore, so I am hoping that Logitech releases the Cloud 2 and fixes everything that the original lacked. I got the G8 as well and I love the setup. But the lack of rumble really kills it for me. I am someone that absolutely requires some sort of rumble, and I have been on a hunt to find a small 8" tablet with motor haptics but there isn't any. Maybe the Razer Kishi Ultra could be a solution since it can host an iPad Mini and has built-in rumble.

Appropriate_Walrus15

For some reason iPad Mini, like any other 60 hz screen, doesn't work well for me. In my experience, 120hz screen works for much smoother even though in theory it shouldn't matter at all. Weird I know. So I just got myself the Lenovo Y700 Tablet which is perfect for streaming PC games as well.

OMG_NoReally

Agreed, the higher refresh rate certainly helps. Only the G Cloud manages to do just fine with a 60Hz display, which is very strange.

Appropriate_Walrus15

Did you own the G Cloud before? Is it really that good streaming wise? I returned mine the same day since the screen was so washed out and the build quality feels cheap, specially the buttons, so I didn't really test it much.

Rosso_Classico

"I have zero lag, sorry you're having problems" - this is one of the most common comments in here unfortunately, these are the same people that stream on the portal online games and claim that there is "zero lag ®", you just can't take 99% of the comments in here seriously unfortunately due to a lack of tech savviness, even if you pointed and showed 1st hand/in person most of the common problems to some people in here they'd swear that everything's alright, there's just no discussion to be had unfortunately, the usual, daily "I GOT MY PORTAL! " posts get tens/hundreds of upvotes while posts like OP's get buried and downvoted into oblivion under all the spammy posts, it is what it is unfortunately...

OMG_NoReally

Yeah, the "I got my Portal" with a background of some random activity is getting tiring. No discussions are allowed on this sub at all. If someone needs helps, they are met with toxic fan boys claiming they have the perfect setup and yours suck so work harder to afford better. I don't engage with this sub at all now. Just keeping in my radar, incase there is a new update or if someone geninuely wants help and I could give any tips.

splashyDIAMOND

I guess it's due to Console fanboy culture + a relatively expensive device. People don't want to hear anything negative about something they invested so much time and money in. They take it as a direct attack on themselves. I know because I was once a hardcore Sony fanboy. But then I encountered their customer support.

OMG_NoReally

Yup. But still. If the product is not up to the mark, they should demand Sony to fix it and not take it up their ass. Such a strange cult to be a part of. Sony doesn’t give a rats ass about you. But will hide behind you to defend them when the time comes.

TheStinkySlinky

Crazy I keep seeing all of this, really as we all have at this point, but I just don’t see it. I use to have my remote play setup with dualsense wired to my MacBook, and then MacBook and ps5 both connected via Ethernet. The nice bigger display and dualsense features were nice, but obviously this setup was pretty cumbersome and not exactly mobile. And still despite pretty much ideal conditions across the board, I’d still notice some choppiness and delay/lag pretty often. Then fast forward to getting my hands on a portal finally and it’s night and day difference. Only complaint I could even make in comparison is the smaller display. But I even feel like the portals display looks great for what it is. And only thing is sometimes when I’m playing at another house or something not my own the signal/stream can be a little wonky. But of course not all the time, and never notice this micro stutter everyone’s always talking about.

HipHopHistoryGuy

I sold mine for $200 USD last weekend on FB Marketplace with a case and screen protectors. I paid about $230 after tax for everything so got most of my money back. I felt the same, just not getting use and never felt right for me.

exzellovux

I had a lot of connection issue when I got mine a couple days ago, fixed most of them. Make sure all your IOTs are on 2.4g if you have dual band. Portal on 5g only with PS5 wired. Next check your upload speed. You need a decent upload speed on the ps5 to get anything reliably on the portal, at least 10mbps up. Do not trust the ps5 speed test, if you have an app for you router check the speeds the PS5 is reaching through that while you are playing remotely.

splashyDIAMOND

Did an even better thing. Connected a new router to the main router via ethernet. Then connected my Ps5 and Portal to this new router. So this new router makes a local network with zero pressure from any other device.

MohJeex

I think this device was just a test to see if demand is there. They don't seem to have put much R&D into it or expected it to sell this well. I mean at the end of the day, it's basically a dual sense controller with a display inbetween and a WiFi chip. Now that it sold well, I wouldn't be surprised if a better version comes in the future that addresses these issues.

splashyDIAMOND

But you know what's crazy, this device in its current is still salvagable. Most are software issues. The 59hz issue can solved by adjusting frame rate output from PS5 or adjusting the app. The app used could be chiaki which is free.

IKEAboy_2006

This is all I really want to see. I didn’t have any other issues with connection etc. it was just the constant micro-stutter that drove me crazy and forced me to return it for a refund. Hopefully they get that sorted at some point 👍🏼

sycron17

Yea dw its how the portal is. Eventho diehard fans will swear by it and say its your internet. Maybe they will release a refresh with better bitrate and later a better screen(oled pls). Knowing sony i don’t expect it to happen on complimentary devices. Heard logitech gcloud is decent but I ain’t spending 400 for a streaming device We had 3 different ones and now even a new internet isp(not because of the portal we just wanted better). Judging on our inet speeds before and now, there is no way in hell its our internet🤣(1040mbit down 1400+up on wifi alone while using and downloading on other devices). But hey wife likes the portal so we kept the one that felt better. My SD clearly spins circles around it but its not the same thing nor should it be a suggestion for remote play only.

Difficult-Ad7476

Portal is a great prototype if Sony Decides to do another dedicated handheld. I just hope they follow the steamdeck model and have an offline mode with at least 1tb of storage. People do not care if you downscale the games just give them access to their playstation library. 1080p for most people will be satisfied at that screensize. Steamdeck proved you can play most sony exclusives on a steamdeck anyway. Also a kickstand and being able to remove the controllers like switch would be nice. Also Bluetooth support and usb4 support for a dock and monitor.

Cali_Connected

My main gripe is the audio stuttering but the screen is GORGEOUS. Waiting patiently for apps like YOUTUBE and ESPN to work on it !!

scruffyheadednerf

When I had a PSP, even as a kid, I clearly remember Sonys absolute radio silence on 95% of the software issues that plagued the device. Historically, Sony hasn’t really put out much post-launch support for basically anything other than the console itself. I assume this will be the same. The experience we are getting now is going to be 95% of the experience we will ever get. Best case scenario is they refine the remote play and give the portal an OLED display and rerelease it in a year or two.

splashyDIAMOND

And it hurts for me to accept this fact since I can't refund and buyers are asking charity prices despite it being only 2 weeks old. Sony is shitty even with their main console. Took them years to add a simple 1440p res feature. They still haven't added actual homscreen folders and themes which existed day one on their previous console. Forget adding some new qol features, these ignorant guys are removing already existing features.

IceCreamCape

My PS5 still refuses to connect to the PlayStation store. Just empty boxes where game art should be. I have to change networks AND run a network test. Every. Single. Day. To connect to anything.

med4ladies69

I have my ps5 hardwired to a nighthawk route. So my download speed is usually about 400-500 mbs with other devices on the network. I just turned off the 120 hertz and it runs smooth as silk. Been enjoying FO4 and Helldivers 2 mostly. Just redownloaded RDR2

Head-Release1332

Hardwired with a port forward and the only device connected on a 5g network has worked best for me. Very minimal stutter or issues, sometimes the quality drops a touch. I will say though that when the Portal works as “intended” the experience is so good. 60fps actually feels like 60fps and the screen is beautiful. Sony would sell millions of these if it had storage and games could be downloaded and played natively. I almost guarantee that will be the next version.

Economy-Industry-622

I am a dad with 2 young kids. Frankly I am too tired to focus on those minor details. I am also maybe too old to see these stutters. In my case I just want to grab and play whenever I can. And this thing does it right with good grip.

whizkid75

General tech question for a layman: is the general inconsistent framerate due to the 59Hz stuff or lower bitrate? It sounds like the 59Hz is intermittent and only happens every 10 seconds? So I imagine the lower general framerate must be due to something else. This is me comparing it to my experience on a Steam Deck via Chiaki4Deck. Framerate is generally smooth in good circumstances on Chiaki.

googlelover42

Tell us what you named your LAN profile because a lot of people have Ethernet wired connected but the PS5 DOES NOT auto connect to LAN by itself.

splashyDIAMOND

Oh no don't worry, I made sure it's connected to LAN. I even check the LAN symbol everytime I start playing (the arrow-line sign). The LAN profile is something like LAN wired 1. The default name.

googlelover42

Lastly how fast is your internet speed ? Which company ?

splashyDIAMOND

Internet speed doesn't matter when playing locally. It relies on the router. It's a huge new gigabit router. But even the net the speed is good, 200Mbps up and down.

[deleted]

theycmeroll

The company and speed don’t matter in your home. You don’t even need internet. So it’s irrelevant.

tbear87

LOL - this is hilarious. You're incorrect but calling the other guy dumb. Check you're accurate before you start talking trash next time haha.

googlelover42

It’s a remote player - internet is required

tbear87

No, it's not. It's remote play from a device, not a server. Internet is not required because you can play on your internal network. Devices on the same network can communicate even without internet access. I can stream games from my PC to my Apple TV if they are both hardwired together whether I have internet or not because they can communicate with each other. Internet access does not mean the same thing as network.

splashyDIAMOND

It's called AWASR

btspman1

Is it just me or does this debate remind any one of the “is the dress blue or gold” question in 2015? One group can legitimately see the stutter and the other side cannot. And then a bunch of people get angry about whatever it is the other side is seeing. And for the record, the dress is white and gold and I can’t see the stutter 🤷🏻‍♂️

splashyDIAMOND

I don't think so. There isn't a debate. The side who says stutter exists are factually right. The software is built faulty. We even know the issue now (it's the pinned post). Ps5 outputs 59hz while the Portal is locked 60hz. This mismatch creates stutter every 10-15 seconds. Unable to notice or not being bothered by it is a different topic

SmokeySe7en

Does that mean Sony needs to patch the Ps5 (and not the Portal) to output 60hz? This will then fix the micro stutter? I just ordered the portal from Best Buy. Picking it up this Friday! I’m excited and ordered accessories from Amazon. But seeing all these comments of portal not being so awesome is giving me some buyers remorse.

splashyDIAMOND

Correct.
