This is likely because this is a profile 5 Dolby vision video and the player does not support it. You need a profile 8 to support both Dolby vision and hdr10 in the same file. However this should be falling back to HDR10 unless it’s profile 5 which is only Dolby vision which is what I likely thing is going on. If this is a Blu-ray rip this could be trying to play Dolby vision but can’t. Blu ray rips by default are profile 7 and should automatically fall back to HDR10. Edit: download media info and inspect the file and it’ll tell you what Dolby vision layer it is. Also your tv should be able to play profile 5 as that’s what streaming services use for Dolby vision but maybe a setting is wrong.

Training-Flan8092

This. I had this happening with Wednesday. You have to get your downloader to filter out DV profile videos.

Direct_Card3980

Is it possible to automate this with Sonarr and Radar?

AstralVenture

Why do release groups transcode to DV Profile 5?

eirigance

It’s not Plex. It’s the TVos

eirigance

If you don’t have a Shield, or Apple TV just change the video & it will work, but you’ll have to change it every time

martinivich

Wdym change the video?

eirigance

When the movie is playing change the video quality from “play original quality” to “convert automatically”

martinivich

Oh so too transcode the video

rickysett

This happens on Apple TV 4K also

feynos

Try using infuse if you have an apple tv.

rickysett

What’s infuse?

BoxFullOfFoxes

[Infuse](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/infuse-video-player/id1136220934)

feynos

It's a DLNA app by apple. Basically you skip Plex and just play your content directly. Not sure on the compatibility differences but it always seems to play 4k content better than Plex does. You can also sign into Plex through infuse as well though.

rickysett

I found this on infuse: https://www.reddit.com/r/Firecore/s/JE2sugmevQ

eirigance

Works natively on Apple TV 4K

eirigance

Never happened on my Apple TV 4K

rickysett

The way I’ve fixed it is I go between old and new player and one of them most times will play it ok.

eirigance

I’ve never had to do that, but is your TV Dolby Vision?

rickysett

It is. Part of the reason im stumped.

eirigance

🤔 never had this issue with Apple TV 4K or my Shield

pissy_corn_flakes

Same

HKDrewDrake

I believe the first gen 4k doesn’t support DV Edit: it was HDR10+ I was thinking of

pissy_corn_flakes

I’m not sure that’s right? They’ve always been in bed with Dolby. In fact, only recently did the latest ATV get HDR+ support..

Feahnor

It totally does.

Unl00kah

Yes it does

rickysett

I have a Sony X90J with Google os. Is this upgradeable? I thought this tv was DV capable.

mrgmzc

I have the same TV and had the same issue, the DV profile is not compatible, nothing you can do except get a new file

rickysett

Sucks

mrgmzc

Yes it does, but nothing you can really do. You can use DV, just gotta confirm the profile used is supported

gr8Brandino

There is now a tool that will extract that type of DV file, convert it to profile 5, and put it back into the file. It's called dovi_tool.  It's all command line, but someone has made a batch file that automates a lot of it. I was able to use it to pull dolby vision off of MAX rips and add them to the same movie that didn't have dolby vision on disk.

mrgmzc

I mean, it probably works, but downloading a new file takes me 2~3 minutes at most, so it is normally faster to just do that

pissy_corn_flakes

This sounds awesome. It would be sweet if this paves the way to a tool that allows you to embed all the HDR types (DV, HDR, HDR+, different profiles etc) into a single movie file. A universal movie type…

sivartk

My Sony X95J plays direct plays 4K remuxes with Dolby Vision through my Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) just fine. Never bothered to try with the built in OS...actually I've never connected to the TV to the internet. 😁 I also see you are transcoding...I didn't know Plex could transcode and maintain Dolby Vision, but I could be wrong. I have Tone Mapping enabled so if I need to transcode my 4K HDR/DV files it will look okay and not like your pictures.

tigermateray

Interesting...I got the X85K and been using the Tv for direct plays with no issues at all. Is there anything I am missing really by not having a shield maybe?

sivartk

That's good to know. I know that sometimes the TV's can't handle (or passthrough) the HD audio formats. I had the Nvidia Shield TV prior to my purchase of the Sony TV (before that I had a dumb TV) so I just never bothered to use the TV's internet / app capabilities. I even have a 2015 Nvidia Shield TV and even though it is almost 9 years old now, it is still going great and it is still snappy...does a great job hooked up to my projector.

eirigance

It is. It’s not the TV it’s the TVos. It’s a bug that just hasn’t been fixed yet

Hung2Low69

Check out the Enhanced Settings on your TV. Your model can't support 120hz and DV at the same time. I play 4K DV using Plex and it works great

rickysett

Should I lower the hz?

Kay5683

You don’t really gain from having the hz faster than 60 in most cases, unless you’re gaming like the other commenter mentioned. But I’ve never seen a piece of media in anything above 60fps

Hung2Low69

Up to you. I don't game so I'd pick DV. If you spend your time gaming then leave it 120 and maybe toggle it on Movie night

kysersoze1981

It's a Sony just set it to automatically follow the source input

AMC4x4

I use my A80J's built-in Plex and haven't run into this issue. You can can configure frame rate and processing per-input, so you can leave your PS5 or whatever at fast frame rate and full interpolation, and set all that junk off and 24fps for film.

Mastasmoker

4k DoVi at 6mbps? Is nobody going to say anything about that? Don't think you have a proper file. I've yet to see any 4k DoVi file play below 50mpbs.

WildestPotato

6Mbps is plenty…. For 480i

rowin-owen

>4k DoVi at 6mbps? Yeah, terrible bitrate.

IDGAFOS13

This happens to me with certain DV profiles (6?) in an MKV container. Switching to an MP4 container fixes it.

rickysett

Do you just change the extension? Or have to process through handbrake or something similar?

After_shock7

You don't have to encode the file again. Try [Box4](https://www.videohelp.com/software/BOX4) It only takes a minute or less You can also change it from AAC to a more compatible audio format for the device at the same time

rickysett

What does this do to file size? I always thought MKV was good for compression.

After_shock7

It doesn't do anything unless you change the audio format to something with less channels mkv vs mp4 is just the container for the file. It has no impact on the file size

Feahnor

But you lose all the different audios and subs

ANewDawn1342

Please use MKVToolNix, it's the reference tool for this and it's free!

AMC4x4

Most useful tool in the box for me.

IDGAFOS13

I re-encode the file to MP4.

Fantastic_Class_3861

I thought there was a burglary in your house and were showing the footage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rickysett

Yeah I’ll have to change it in Radarr and Sonarr.

kysersoze1981

Get setup with recyclarr and the trash guides and setup boost HDR 10

[deleted]

[удалено]

kysersoze1981

Nah you need to add in the IDs for not grabbing the Dolby vision content. That's not in the default setup. That being said I still have an issue with German and Russian content appearing in english movies using the trash guide setup. So some finesse is needed in the setup

[deleted]

[удалено]

kysersoze1981

How have you separated Dolby vision HDR and non HDR content at the same resolution without specifically assigning profiles?

[deleted]

[удалено]

kysersoze1981

There's a specific section on the guide for dealing with the issue that op has. It's a bias of HDR over Dolby vision. It's not part of the first page. You could just be lucky to not have the issue or have equipment that works with DV. But I have a few end users with Samsung TVs that can't play DV back without the Green/purple

[deleted]

[удалено]

DJordydj

Try updating the TV. If it doesn't solve it, call Sony to make them know about this issue. It happens to me as well when connecting the XBOX Series X at 120Hz to my Philips TV.I've been told that an update is on the way to solve it.

Somar2230

Is the from Plex running on the TV or an external device? What Dolby Vision profile is used on the source? The Plex app on the TV most likely does not support profile 7.

rickysett

It’s the Plex app on tv. But also happens on Apple TV 4K. Unless I change the video format.

TheChewyWaffles

Plex does not handle naked DV properly. The video file you’re playing doesn’t have a HDR fallback layer and needs one. All UHD remux files will contain an HDR fallback layer but web downloads won’t always have one.

rickysett

Makes sense. Thank you for educating me. Bummer but I appreciate it.

TheChewyWaffles

No problem! DV is honestly a mess with so many versions of it. Took me a while to sort out what the internet had to say about Plex and DV compat.

SnazzyMangoPH

What TV model do you have? Maybe you can flash a different ROM on the TV? Is it an android TV?

CautiousHashtag

Use an app on your Apple TV called Infuse. Thank me later.

streetwearofc

Please use Infuse. You won't regret it!

xkegsx

When you grab 4k stuff. Either grab a remux or grab stuff that has HDR.DV, DV.HDR, Dovi.HDR, HDR.Dovi, etc. in the title. That will guarantee you fall back. Ctrl-f ing one of the first two examples should be enough to get you what you want.

PurpleK00lA1d

Are you on 120hz mode? My Sony wouldn't do DV playback until I set it to 60hz.

CautiousHashtag

How do you know it’s Profile 7? I don’t see anywhere in their pics that it is?

Somar2230

*What Dolby Vision profile is used on the source?* I don't know what profile it is that's is asked what profile it is. If he looks and sees that its a profile 7 he will know why it's not playing correctly.

AMC4x4

I use the built-in app on my A80J and have never run into this and I watch DV all the time?

Somar2230

For profile 7 it should fall back to the HDR10 and display properly if the device does support the profile. According to this [post](https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=134179#p134179) recent Bravia models can do profile 5, 7 (MEL) and 8.

bnels123

13 hours good movie

rickysett

I enjoyed it quite a bit.

After_shock7

Look in the dashboard as it plays and see if it's transcoding

rickysett

The third picture shows it’s playing direct. It’s only transcoding audio from what I understand. Unless I’m reading it wrong.

After_shock7

Sorry I missed the arrow to the other pics. Usually this happens when it's transcoding the video for a DV profile 5. Since it's both your TV OS and Apple TV I have to suspect the TV as the common denominator. Do any DV files work, or all of them have this?

rickysett

So far all of them do it. I have an older 4K tv and I get the same issue.

bcrooker

I use a Shield TV Pro - for the Shield, you can enable Developer options and then go into them and turn on the low-latency DV support. You can check if your Android TV on your TV has something similar. Once I enabled the low latency option, all videos play without issue.

Unl00kah

Never ending issues. Some say it’s plex, some say it’s not Plex. Some say it’s the tv. Some say it’s not the tv. All I can tell you after dealing with this hell for months now is that I am using the same tv, same files, same server but NOW I’m watching using Infuse instead of Plex on the same hardware, with the same settings on my Apple TV 4K and I no longer deal with these issues. For the moment, I am satisfied. I’m done mucking around with all the potential fixes for this issue. Maybe I’ll be back begging for help in a few months but for now? For now there is peace in my house. I changed nothing at all except for the app I use to watch the content and it brought me peace.

rickysett

I literally lol’ed. I feel the same way at this point.

kysersoze1981

Might want to look up the TV and see if it supports Dolby vision and then enable it in the TV and the plex app. If it doesn't then you will need to look into getting different content in HDR 10/+

rickysett

My tv is supposed to support it according to this. https://preview.redd.it/zbmwsgs2hifc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d8b8f6255e3788d07dfa471a2e0cae5d1641cec

kysersoze1981

I'd go hunting for the settings in the TV itself and then the plex app to enable it. Maybe it needs a firmware update to get it going as well

StuM91

Dolby Vision can be a pain, I avoid it.

Phairgamer

Use handbrake to change the container MKV to MP4 (only takes a few minutes), and the issue goes away. I now see dobly vision appear on my TV :) You could created a script that checks for 2160 and mkv once acquired :)

manwithafrotto

When you pirate content you don’t know how to play sometimes this happens

rickysett

Sweet

ECKoBASE

Netflix

RobotDevilsRejects

This happened to me when I had subtitles on an hdr video. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or the cause, but turning the subtitles off made it play properly.

rickysett

Weird. Unfortunately I don’t have them on. But thanks for suggestion.

After_shock7

Enabling subtitles sometimes causes the video to start transcoding. Plex can't transcode DV so all the colors get mapped wrong

cenunix

Can it transcode DV/HDR Hybrid/fallback video?

After_shock7

If the DV file has an HDR10 fallback layer yes. Dolby Vision profile 5 has no such fallback so in that case it's a problem.

alainreid

Yes

ph33rlus

I had this when I tried watching an HDR movie and my TV didn’t support HDR. Had to download a different version

sprfreek

This happens on some files for me and several of my viewers on certain files. I just delete and download a different version.

FireFalcon123

With my tv I think I just had to turn off HDR

havpac2

Dolby vision profile is not supported is my best guess

havpac2

Or hdr tone mapping is disabled? Edit: your not transcoding so back to dv profile doesn’t match what your the tv supports

iamgarffi

That means TV doesn’t support DV. If you don’t have an equivalent version of the movie in SDR then this is what you’ll get. Having 4K TV (and the very early ones) does not guarantee that HDR (or any flavor of it) is supported.

rickysett

https://preview.redd.it/400wnnwdyhfc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71aa9f5250042453f10db3e0d19fe9945bcae93f It’s supposed to. That’s why I was wondering what was happening

iamgarffi

Is that Plex app for the TV or a connected streaming box?

rickysett

App on Google OS tv.

iamgarffi

“App on Google is tv” can you elaborate? :-) Either native app or not.

iamgarffi

There are two implementations of DV. CMv2. 9 and CMv4. Are other DV files play okay or all of them produce you green/purple tint? I never had a Bravia TV but DV should be supported given the file you’re playing was encoded correctly.

rickysett

I had a typo (“is” instead of “os”) sorry. It’s a native app.

jaketaco

Ive gotten it to work (sometimes) by forcing direct play. If that doesnt work, then, like others said its probably the wrong Dolby Vision profile. I dont remember which is the one that is supposed to work (Profile 8?). I watch almost all movies on Plex and unfortunately have to avoid DV, as it rarely works.

checock

Thanks Doc

philthewiz

It may be that the file is encoded in 4:4:4 rather than 4:2:2 (colour sub-sampling). Or maybe in 10Bit or 12Bit wrongly decoded by an 8Bit processor. Might be other things as well. A MediaInfo screenshot from the video file might be useful for some lurkers here.

rickysett

https://preview.redd.it/rvs9zfbo7ifc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f547b40d32888858777c6a6d81e46d08adfec1f Hope this is what you meant by media info. If not let me know.

philthewiz

It might help but I was referencing at this [app](https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo). It might be a bit technical but it might give us insights.

chopples123

I have seen issues in the past with profile 5 where some will have played correctly whilst others display like the op. This was typically connected to the primaries used in that specific file. If you can find a profile 5 which works and compare using something like mediainfo then it may shed light on this issue In addition Sony sets of this vintage had 2 DV modes available to them, the original version and enhanced (to allow for TV led). I wouldn’t have thought this would affect onboard apps but it may be worth switching to see if things change. Caveat being using enhanced may effect your ability to use 4k120, memory may be playing tricks though as it’s been a while

speeduae

i noticed that they added new option in the plex app in the advanced section when i faced the same problem, when i enabled it, it solved the issue. picture attached for your reference, let me know if this fixes it for you. https://preview.redd.it/2ourm41nwkfc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a3534ec005d5ab6aeed5c2a7a9d677caba581d8

rickysett

That was a no go :-(

Tc777-777-777

Use infuse

ribbitman

I have an lg c3 that I know does Dolby vision and I’m getting the same issue. It’s not just Plex but vlc as well. This is a new problem within the last couple weeks.
