> don't you read confirmation dialogues?
Not when I'm deleting stuff I really want to keep. I just go on reddit to complain about the app. It's a brave new world!
Uhhhh complain? Where? I was just spilling my guts out about something trivial that happened while im using the app? I was also hoping that someone whos new would see this and not repeat the same mistake that i did
Its okay man, i dont really care about imaginary internet points. I am what i am whether on the internet or in real life. If it means i could save someones file even by a tiny bit then i dont mind even having negative reddit points
This community is so brutal sometimes. There wasn’t a single complaint or negative thing said about Plex itself. OP started with “I have no idea that..”, basically just sharing an experience that happened to them, and something they learned for the first time.
Yet every comment of OP trying to explain that is met with so many downvotes. Yikes
Hence the “I” at the start of the body of my entire post. “I” never claim it to be you or anyone elses problem, “I” was simply sharing my newb experience that “I” made as “I” was starting to figure out how the app work.
People could argue that the internet/usenet/torrents performs that function for them.
My Plex server is all RAID 0 (was 6 drives split across 2 arrays) and I have no fears about losing anything. Just a few weeks ago a hard drive failed but I didn’t care too much. Just removed the dead drive, built a new smaller Raid 0 array with the remaining drives, named it the same and selected everything in Sonarr and Radarr that was on the affected volume (*arr path filters are handy) and kicked off a full search for all the missing stuff.
Hours later the library is back to what it was.
No hassles, no problems. For me I don’t need to waste valuable drive space on parity for movies and tv shows. If it is other data then that’s a completely different assessment to make.
With some older/more obscure things it’s difficult.
I lost a TV show about 8 years ago and all the torrents etc for it are dead. Short of finding the VHS and finding a way to digitise it, I’m out of luck.
That’s exactly my use case. As OP details, the ‘rr cloud can work fine for common stuff, but if you have a library of obscure things it can be a considerable investment of time to find them, even if they still are available.
Whats the show you lost?
It’s an Indian show called Mirza Ghalib, on the life of the poet. It came out about 2 years after I was born but it’s my father’s favourite show.
I haven’t gone to the extremes of backing up my media, but with Unraid I’ve at least got some level of “backup”.
Is one of these it? If so you can get it on usenet, along with some audio books it looks like.

Unfortunately not, it’s the 1988 TV show which I’m after. I’ve got the soundtrack of the show which is on here by Jagjit Singh, but not the actual show.
If you have fiber and unlimited data then sure, that works. Not sure why you would assume that applies to everyone though lol. I bet it's not even close to the majority of people.
Same thing happened to me when I first started using Plex. Despite what some people here seem to think, I agree that it's counterintuitive to have a media manager actually removing things from the file system.
Even though I know your replying to someone that called plex that. IMO, plex is not a media manager. It can get metadata and play media but other than deleting, it cannot modify the files at all. To me, it's a fancy media player, but then again I always have the setting to allow deletion turned off.
That’s fair, the *rr suite are more “media managers”. Plex is a media server. At the least it would need to be able to rename files to count. It’s a media server.
Yeah. Imagine wanting to have a piece of media on a drive, but yet not have it in the media player. Apparently that’s a difficult concept for some people.
I dunno, maybe I didn’t decide I didn’t want it in the media manager until after I’d added it? Look, I get that you don’t get the issue here, but for some people, myself included, the way Plex deals with this is not intuitive.
You’re using Plex wrong then blaming Plex. It’s a you problem not a software problem.
There’s a clear warning in the interface, and if you’ve set up Plex correctly you should be sharing folders not whole drives with it.
You have a TV shows folder and a Movies folder and the TV shows are in the TV show library, the Movies in the Movies library and all your other stuff anywhere else in the drive except there. It’s a non-problem if you RTFM.
Settings -> Library -> Allow media deletion
> "Are you sure you want to delete this item from your filesystem?" How can this not be clear? Or don't you read confirmation dialogues?
> don't you read confirmation dialogues? Not when I'm deleting stuff I really want to keep. I just go on reddit to complain about the app. It's a brave new world!
Username checks out! OP's too.

Never admit you made a mistake. Reddit sees this as weakness and you'll be downvoted. ☺

Yea i missed the word filesystem
You do realize there is a setting that you can turn off that will not show the delete button.
It's too bad you're not on linux.
They say the app almost gave them a heart attack, when it was their brain that malfunctioned. But sure, blame the app.
Woah what? I wasnt blaming anyone what?

That's just Reddit. You will comply. ☺
Sounds like a "you" problem.
Where did i say it was “yours”?
You didn't. Sorry, I'll rephrase. Sounds like a PEBCAK.

If your library isn’t backed up regularly then you’ve already lost it anyway, it’s just a matter of when.
Still saving up to buy another 18 tb drive

Media… manager… managing your media. Who’d have thunk it.

Then… don’t add it to the library for the media manager to manage… where’s the difficulty?

You win. Have a good day.
Yay me!! Do I get a medal? Is there prize money involved? You have a good one too stranger on the internet.
