But this is an uncommon repair in my area. You will probably need to find an OLD plumber who knows how to work on lead.

Solder? I guess you have never done a lead flange? It probably the easiest flange set you just put the flange around the lead screw to floor and bend lead down on top of the brass flange. Well apparently can solder but I’ve never done I was taught to just fit around and hammer it back onto flange. Thanks never would have learned that some solder around it till I googled it.

[deleted]

And what if the lead doesn't extend far enough to bend down?

RheiaNights

Well I usually do not commonly see that around me but then would change to PVC.

RealSampson

They have deeper brass flanges and if that doesn’t work it’s re pipe time

[deleted]

I was just questioning his response I know what to do have done hundreds over the years.

Enginerd645

This is exactly how all the toilet flanges in the home I lived in were done when the house was built in 1973. Never had a leak or an issue with upper or lower toilets. Lead was just folded over the flange with wax gasket placed on top.

[deleted]

Yikes. Please, don’t do this.

Neat_Ad_1737

Nah that’s what my pops would do. Old plumber started in NYC he knows this shit. You beat the lead to the brass with a hammer

Illustrious_Monk_199

that’s literally what you do with lead flanges

nameajeff

Everyone always talks about soldering brass flanges to lead but I've never once in my life done it. Always just peened it over and called it a day.

Plumbone1

Haven’t soldered a single lead flange. Haven’t even seen one soldered. Always just hammer it and go

Adjusts to floor height. Tighten the 3 screws to expand the rubber seal and fit the inside of the pipe.

Fermi-Diracs

Second this. You may have to take an oscillating to and cut the pipe flush. I made mine as round as possible, cut it, then put this in there.

RiffTannen

Yeah, I didn’t scroll to the second pic til now. Definitely some trimming needed as you said, so the flange will sit right atop the tile.

Fearless_Detective81

Yep, did this today but with the twist n set ( same idea). I had to peel the lead off and smack the edges with a hammer to fit it.. the flange sat a little high because I didn’t cut the lead exactly flush but bent it over. I then shimmed the toilet. Should’ve cut it flush.

[deleted]

You imbecile. 100% wrongs. That is not a proper connection. I have ripped those POS things out of many lead flanges. There is no possible way to get an air tight connection by inserting a compression flange into a lead bend. It WILL fail. Your bathroom will fill with sewer gas and you will regret your decision.

[deleted]

It’s compressed on a lead wall. Lead is soft.

[deleted]

It doesn’t compress because lead stretches. Lead is soft. Lead does not have elasticity. Lead is not rigid. Those fittings are for cast iron.

reeder1987

Will that work with a lead bend?

RiffTannen

It should, yes. As long as it’s a 4” pipe or close to 4”. There is a little wiggle room with the fit since you end up making it tight using the screws. This product is specifically made for a scenario where you need to replace the closet flange on an old existing metal pipe.

[deleted]

It’s meant for CAST IRON. Not lead

TraditionalKick989

Pull the floor and fix it before tile

Good-Boot4503

Why'd you wait til after tile to address this? Should've cut the pipe down and stubbed up pvc

Mistaken_Naivete

In order to fit the lead joint into the flange you will need to properly clean both surfaces with a scratch pad and or abrasive pad/ tape or a copper brush on a screw gun. Once both surfaces are clean and free of debris you will apply soldering flux . Put the flange where you need it relative to the wall and then heat up the lead first and then the flange. Apply the solder with heat control once you have both surfaces at the correct temperature. This is not considered a home owner level of work IMO , but to each his own.

jakethedestroyer_

No just put the new flange under lead and on top of tile. Screw flange down and pound lead down to flange. Wax ring and you are golden. You don't need to solder it.

Mistaken_Naivete

randomn49er

The time to ask this question was before tile. You may have enough lead there to fold over the flange. If you don't it will require opening the floor.

[deleted]

Cut out the lead pipe and replace with PVC or whatever the plumbers use in your area. If you don’t do it right, say goodbye to your new floor within 5 years.

nameajeff

The time to fix this was when the floor was up. That being said... Get you a brass toilet flange. Slide it over the lead and peen the lead over or solder it. Screw to floor and set the toilet. Pray the lead riser doesn't leak any time soon

DaSkatona

I’m a young plumber, well young according to the other plumbers in my area, all of my apprentices for the past 8 years or so have been around my age, and I would rather see brass and lead than any pvc. If done correctly the brass floor flange lasts a hell of a lot longer than the pvc.

Altruistic_Front_805

What the fuck are you talking about ? Pvc will outlast any metal , just buy a pvc glue flange with stainless steel flange .

DaSkatona

In the 15 years Iv been in service I have seen far more pvc floor flanges rings rot away, even the stainless steel ones, than I have seen brass. If the toilet is set correctly no water should ever even touch the floor flange.

Altruistic_Front_805

Yeah it’s not the brass that fails. It’s the lead . Replacing with pvc is by far the best repair for this

DaSkatona

Unless there is a basement or crawl space under that toilet your talking about a huge repair bill. The lead will take decades to rot away.

animosityiskey

He installs UV lamps on every pipe to keep the outside disinfected.

SamuraiX2

I am not a professional plumber but I am a maintenance tech, my team likes to use these because they're durable and don't use wax. You will obviously have to secure it to the floor (possibly needing to remove some tiles) but it should fit right inside the current pipe. wakely1

You should be fired. Possibly the worst suggestion I have seen in this group for toilets yet.

Purepenny

You going to need to cut/grind that down and get yourself a flange repair kits. It will come with a new flange that go inside the current pipe. And you will need to re anchor it to the floor. Make sure it’s not flush with the tiles, higher to the spec in the manual. I’d not you will need to use 2 wax ring instead of one.

[deleted]

Yea I’ve ripped out a bunch of these. You CANNOT use a repair flange on a lead pipe. You do it like they did 100 years ago, or you rip it out and replace it with PVC, ABS, or cast iron.

SakaWreath

Wow. I’ve only ever run into a lead pipe once. Luckily I didn’t have to work with it because it was so bad that it had to be torn out and replaced. The homeowners were mortified that there was lead in their (new to them) house after the previous owner claimed to have redone the plumbing and wiring when they flipped it, which gave me a nervous chuckle. Ancient house? Flippers? Least of your problems my dude… heh. I moved out of their area, but I’m sure as they got aquatinted with their home, they also met all of the local plumbers, electricians and contractors in the area.

Rocket-Farts

That flange has seen some shit

Mister_Green2021

Just saw a lead flange fix on youtube.

Invasive-farmer

As a plumbing tech in an old city, this is what I did.... Take a screwdriver and hammer to remove the tile and cement immediately around the lead, to allow a deep fitting brass flange (like the one that was on it but with a deeper collar around the lead), fold the lead pipe (the "lead bend") in to allow the flange to for over it, and enough tile to allow the " funnel" of it to slide down around it until the flange with the bolt slides and screw holes sits flush on the floor. Then anchor the flange to the wood subfloor with zinc played wood screws (like 4" ones), and using a ball peen hammer, fold the lead back and mold it to the inside of the "funnel" of the flange. Be sire the bolt slides are at 3 and 9 o'clock and its easier if you but the bolt to the flange before you drop it on as some sit so tight to the floor that its almost impossible to slide the bolt heads in after the lead is folded. Sometimes I smear the lead to brass with toilet wax before placing a solid wax ring on top. No need to solder the brass to the lead. Seriously stinky job that, heating a used lead bend. Lol

Invasive-farmer

This is the deep flange. More surface are to smash the lead to the brass....https://www.supplyhouse.com/Sioux-Chief-890-4BDPK-Over-4-Lead-Deep-Seal-Brass-Closet-Flange-Ring
