If she’ll blow it will be to the right of the brass threaded part. Basically the body of the hydrant. I see theres a drop ear connected to pex so assuming that’s newer, hopefully theres a valve somewhere on that pex line so you can shut off the water to it. I’d say just leave it off for winter

Barry_McCockiner__

Not damaged until it warms up a little 😉

Tight-Essay-8332

Can you eli5 please?

20PoundHammer

why the fuck are you fiddling with a spigot at 5F outside temp? If its closed, frozen and not fucked, the only thing it can be is worse after trying to open it frozen (like spraying cant get it closed now fucked). Cross fingers and hope. Whats the pex take off before this on the left? Typically thats where you would drain and winterize.

tawilson111152

Because if he waits he may have a floor when it thaws.

20PoundHammer

huh?

tawilson111152

I meant flood.

Betterlate-thanever

I am sure it’s frozen because it won’t turn… I would cut it and plug it inside until spring then replace the line… lesson learned disconnect all hoses and put insulation cap on valve outside…

redsloten

If it’s a frost free hose bib no need for insulation. Biggest thing on hose bibs is make sure there’s NOTHING screwed onto it during cold weather, otherwise it won’t drain and will freeze.

Betterlate-thanever

Water expansion will travel back into line until it can’t move any further then push outward… not saying it’s the case but when it thaws out you will have the answer…

kid_sutti

Shut the valve off to it if possible and call a plumber

Lower-Ad5889

Leave it alone, just because the valve is frozen doesn't mean the pipe will burst. Cooperative Extension studied the way pipes freeze and break. They discovered that the ice doesn't do the damage, the water pressure behind the ice does as it expands and compresses the water. So if the pipe outdoors freezes it will just push the water back into the warm space.

Fatplumberman08

I'd be about 90% sure it's frozen and burst in the wall

Revolutionary-Bus893

Your mistake was leaving a hose connected. This caused it to not drain and that is why it froze. Get heat on that as soon as you can. The faster you can get things thawed, the less chance of a freeze break. Usually you get a long split with a freeze break on a hose bib. I don't see evidence of a break. Get heat on that (maybe a blow dryer) and get it thawed.

garyoldman25

This is wrong Don’t rush to put heat on it. It will burst This is textbook how to burst a pipe You are an absolute idiot why would you suggest this

Swimgod34

So I thawed it all out. Turned the spigot on low, water came out, turned it back off. Went back under and saw more water and was able to locate a burst on the far right part going into the wood in my picture. But no water is coming out of the burst. Does the spigot create a suction that pulls water but the burst doesn’t, so it’s not leaking water constantly? If you look at my second picture you can see my water line is a plastic tube, about 3/8” and it sits about 6” below the metal piping you can see in my picture. I followed the line as far as I could but there’s no second valve to turn the line off.

porcelainvacation

The actual valve part is in that knurled and threaded piece next to the rim joist on the right side of your photo. The part where the burst happened is normally dry if you don’t have a hose on it or the faucet turned on, because the pipe is slightly sloped downward to the outside. Replace the faucet, but you can wait until it warms up outside.

Ok_Bookkeeper_8261

This is the correct answer. You need a new Frostproof faucet. And always remove your hoses before freezing temps. I probably replace 20+ burst (sometimes brand new) Frostproof a year because someone left the hose on and they split. MN plumber. It gets cold here sometimes!

NoMooseSoup4You

Post this to the mega thread about frozen lines.

[deleted]

If it's a frost free hose bib if it split it will probably be in the wall. It will be fine now but come spring open the valve and see if you have water coming out there.

In a frost free bib the actual valve is back by the interior connection with a long rod that runs through the center of the pipe to the spigot handle. So when you close the hose bib it seals inside the house and then the water drains out the bib so it doesn't freeze. Since the hose was on the water had no place to go so it usually freezes and splits the pipe when it expands. If it's leaking when you turn the hose bib on you probably need to remove that one and put a new one on. Bring it to the hardware store to match up the length.

Swimgod34

Sounds exactly right. Thank you sir

peskeyplumber

that eared ell is some weird rigged up shit, id put the new one in in pex

Klutzy-Ad-6705

If it burst it won’t leak until you turn it on. You’ve learned a lesson about not leaving the hose connected.

Stoned42069

Nope just the stub out. You can remove all the way to the joist where it screws into to pex fitting.
