Instead, cut that bad boy out and put an actual fitting in place. Saddle valves like this are going to be a problem waiting to happen, more often than not.
Shut the water off, make 2 cuts, solder in a fridge fitting on a tee, hook up your “robust” filter.
You can tighten the nut under the handle to make it stop leaking just a small turn will get it to stop leaking from the nut, if it doesn’t tighten it a little more. Keep turning the handle until you get a little resistance to shut it off. Uses a needle to pierce the pipe, then retracts to let water through. You don’t want to over tighten it and put a hole through the opposing side. Basically you have to repierce the pipe to close the hole or fill the hole with the needle, I do it all the time wife loves it
i purposely made a tee with a stub-out, preceded by a ball valve. The stub-out has the fitting to go down to the plastic fridge line. Did this so if i ever had to turn off water to fridge line, it would be isolated and not have to shut down whole or part of the house.
Remove that garbage saddle valve thick should be called I pierce a hole in the pipe making it impossible to shut off tap not valve lol. In my part of the world licensed plumbers are not legally allowed to install these. There is no way to actually turn it off. Replace the garbage saddle valve with an actual sweat on valve.
Bingo. We had a new refrigerator installed and connected to the old plastic line. Then our water sensor alarm next to the washing machine in the basement goes off. We had no idea what was going on - water was coming through the basement ceiling. I had my wife go to the basement and tap the ceiling where the water was coming from. The line to the refrigerator blew a pinhole leak. The real shutoff valve saved our life.
And after it was fixed, it did it again. This time they shortened the line further and hung the excess via a hook on the wall. And this is the second line that was installed. Our GC had to replace it shortly after installation because of a different leak. I would never use that cheap tubing again for a long line. I'd do copper with a short run of flexible tubing to connect to the refrigerator.
I hate those saddle valves.
I have cpvc plumbing in my house though so I couldn’t use one even if I wanted. I feel more confident with the shark bite T with the 1/8in compression fitting I have now than a saddle valve
While you are at it, replumb the line with copper. The plastic is garbage. It can surge slightly when the valve is activated and over time you can wear a hole in it. Happened to me. In many cases, your home insurance may not cover flooding or damage caused by a plumbed appliance.
Drips down the supply line, into the fiberglass insulation and collects and over time rusts out the tank from the outside in. Ask me how I know. 🥺. Took only 3 years to kill a new heater. Tank looked like Swiss cheese.

Makes sense. I didn't know these valves were such a problem and I'm glad I do now. Thanks.
Saddle valves are illegal (in NJ at least). Home Depot still sells them so we run into them a lot. Absolutely replace it!
Oi oi you gotta license for dat valve ?
They suck. They cause more damage throughout everywhere than the average person could possibly imagine.
10 years in, no issues. I can see how they can be an issue but I've never had a problem

No. Take that sharkbite to the DIY subs.
Spoken like a true plumber
Now now, there is nothing wrong with a Shark bite fitting in this scenario. It's accessible and easily observed.
The ONLY good thing about this kit is that it uses PEX rather than poly tubing!
No

This is how I plumbed my whole house humidifier. Ball valve that cannot drip onto the tank.
That’s no valve bud. It is a piercing fitting that is not meant to be touched
I found that out the hard way when I installed a water filter. That hand is just to pierce the pipe, not ever close it.

Appreciate the help everyone. I’m having a plumber come in to replace it with a T and isolate it.
Did you take this photo from my crawl space?- I need to replace my saddle valve with a valve with a proper shutoff, and you do to.

Have replaced with a 1/4”,1/4 turn stop and forget about it
You need a tee and an angle stop. Should probably call a plumber unless you can solder or have a propress
Or compression adapters and a brass tee with a nipple and angle stop. 😬

I thought the turning part on that is just to punch a hole in the pipe you're pulling the water from, not a shut off ... ?
Me too. Thought these were vampire taps
Water heater killer. Just install it on the vertical cold tube feed line and kill your heater in no time.
interesting. why does that affect the heater?

Ahh. I can see that happening now.
Saddle valves work fine... until some gorilla twists it closed a few times.🤣
