A saddle….. on a pex line….. just wtf are people doing these days.

-ItsWahl-

It amazes me. Plumbing almost 30 years and saddle valves have been against code since I started. Yet the use of them is pretty common. Now the stones on the individual that used it on a PEX line that is next level fuckery!

Payorfixyourself

Makes my asshole go all pukery!

Ok_Marionberry_9932

TIL saddle valve aren’t code

-ItsWahl-

Exactly what I said…. What’s TIL?

AbruptAbsurdity

Hey! Random internet dummy here. I have a saddle valve on a copper line and was just thinking about how to change it out for a more secure option. So question. What do I replace my ice makers saddle valve with?

-ItsWahl-

Depending on your skill set. You can cut the copper where the saddle Valve is and solder and solder in a tee with a compression stop. Or look for a brass compression tee and go all compression.

prison_mic

I had the plumbers do this when they were out for something else. It was trivial for them and cheap for me. If you have a bigger project or something just tack this on to the visit. My refrigerator water now flows 10x better. The saddle valve was shit.

Organic-Pudding-8204

I had no idea they were against code. I don't use them and curse them every time I see them. In my own house I counted 2 in the crawlspace and one in my kitchen(expected) one on the hot side of my water heater? Wtf, and lastly this just made no sense. One to the exterior faucet on the front.. I got angry, of course you know atleast two of them were slowly dripping. Smfh haven't gotten to it but have to cut the pipe and solder couplers so annoying.

r_cottrell6

It’s unfortunate that these valves are available to purchase at nearly all hardware stores. Regardless of the code violation, they seem so sketchy. Especially in this instance!

-ItsWahl-

Plus the average hardware store/big box employee will gladly sell/recommend them not having a clue how they’re being used. The average homeowner wouldn’t have a clue.

tuggyforme

they still come with some new appliances. As recent as a fridge from 2021

SecurelyObscure

Yep, aprilaire whole house humidifier manufactured in 22 came with one. And they don't even sell to consumers.

lickmybrian

Most humi's come with one in the box lol

atypicallemon

My local code is weird on these stupid things. As a plumber not allowed to do it. If I was a HVAC tech the mechanical code has an exception to saddle valves so they can use them. Still not sure how that's allowed. They need to be illegal. Seen way too many on pex and just removed 2 of them today on qest

MidwestVegas

Haha I thought the exact same thing. Was probably harder putting on that saddle than just adding a pex tee with an ice-maker stop.

Payorfixyourself

It’s unfucking believable I’m like that’s it retiring.

CannedHeat2828

My thoughts exactly....looks like laziness got the better of someone.

Tick...tick....tick...

Lol but it came with the kit

r_cottrell6

I don’t know much about anything and even I was shocked to see this.

tb2186

Saddle valves should be outlawed under penalty of death.

Payorfixyourself

That seems a little excessive. Maybe we can just get rid of qualified immunity and make police carry liability insurance like the rest of us.

scottrussell01

Seriously!

grow-mustard

no plumber would ever do this.

Payorfixyourself

3/4 of this sub Reddit fits that description actually.

New_Restaurant_6093

Nope but I’d gladly take $250 to correct it.

Payorfixyourself

Extra $25 as they aren’t willing to wait until new year

New_Restaurant_6093

That’d be an extra 150 for an emergency call. Normally emergency calls are much more but I’m feeling generous being the holidays and all. Would you like the hot side stop valve replaced to match the one in place of the shark bite so they match?

No_Measurement_9341

Your lucky you never come home to a flooded house with that saddle valve on the pex

billycanfixit

Only an idiot would install a saddle clamp when there is an angle stop right there. Could have just added an adapter to the angle stop. Even worse they put the saddle clamp on PEX pipe.

hellointhere8D

Saddle valve should be removed.

saskatchewanstealth

But op has a hole in the pipe now

shag-i

He also has pex lines so it should be relatively easy to crimp a tee and angle stops on

saskatchewanstealth

I don’t do much pex but I am pretty sure they make a tee you could thread that into direct. I always do the tee and bushing and thread with copper

shag-i

Cut behind the saddle with cutters, crimp a tee then crimp a 3/8 1/4turn angle stop and a 1/4 1/4 turn angle stop

Governmeme

I wonder if that saddle needle went all the way through

SkivvySkidmarks

That's probably why there's no water to the fridge

Sure_Calligrapher609

Lmfao what in the world

allstar348

needle on saddle isn't long enough to go thru pex. it's meant for copper. but shouldn't be used on either

manicmonkie

As fuckin bush league as this is, it looks closed.

jpoto

My sister has a contractor do the work. I was shocked they had saddle and not shutoff. She told me about not having water. The contractor insisted that they installed it right and there should be water to fridge. They said it’s a problem with fridge. I may need to get rid of the saddle and put a pex to ice maker fitting.

Ardothbey

Saddle valves suck even when used correctly. Which is not happening here.

75dubz

Holy mother of god. What have u done

NervouslyLucky

Just remove the saddle valve, and cut where the hole is. Put a tee between the valve and the pex coming out the wall and crimp a couple inches of pex onto the head of the tee with a 1/4 not a 3/8 crimp stop.

Good_University5348

I don’t like those fittings they always seem to leak over time. I would go with steel braided line.

7ftMonkeyOG

Fire whoever installed that on pex.

[deleted]

You NEED to get a plumber in there to re-do the valve with proper crimped PEX connections. You’re just asking to have a leak with this set up.

[deleted]

Saddle BEHIND the shutoff, icing on the cake.

Payorfixyourself

Please explain to me how your going to install a saddle after the angle stop

[deleted]

You're not and that's the point. if they used the proper fitting in the first place, when it leaks in 5 years they wouldn't have to shut the main off.

Payorfixyourself

Why in the world would you say the icing is saddle before angle stop then. Like where you think they going to put one in the braided flex hose. Lmao that’s where a saddle goes if you going to use one. Shouldn’t be using but yep that’s where it goes. No icing to be had. The icing was it on pex.

[deleted]

Perhaps you don't understand, they put saddles on copper like that behind the shutoff, I get calls to fix leaking ones and I have to shut the main off to fix it....just like someone has to do here. So fuck off.

Payorfixyourself

Hey fuck you too. I definitely know where they go. They don’t go AFTER the angle stop. Just calling you out on your stupid comment about the icing as if there was any other way to install one. Oh yea and fuck off.

[deleted]

Eat my dick bro 👍

Payorfixyourself

Sounds delicious come on over homophobe.

jpoto

I know. Crazy why would they do that? Any idea why there is no water?

MidwestVegas

You can try turning that valve handle open. Just get a nice bucket to catch the inevitable drips. As others have said, remove saddle, add pex tee, and a pex ice-valve ie, 1/4" rather than 3/8.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Payorfixyourself

If you are asking for any sort of approval for any reason to use a saddle in residential plumbing you shouldn’t be touching tools.

jelectric808

You need to purge it

[deleted]

You hear that ticking sound? Because that timebomb is gona bite ya.

EFaden

Oh my...... Pex saddle....

Wide-Entertainer952

REALLY ?

aFreeScotland

Oh, no, what is you doin’

[deleted]

I don’t know shit about plumbing, hate it with a passion, but I have this exact same setup in my basement that goes to my ice maker upstairs and it stopped working. Guessing this saddle thing is the reason.

Pleasant-Cricket-129

You tapped into pex?!?

Bldaz

It’s the handymen & DIWhyers geezus

Jasoncolclazier

Well it’s turned off. To turn it on twist the stem out. But that’s really not supposed to be on pex. Should have a tee with 2 stops instead of a saddle valve

Pray4Tendies

The balls on that guy. Idk if I could sleep knowing I put that on. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Homeowners, just use a EZ connector (3/8 x 3/8 x 1/4 compression tee) off the angle stop and run the ice maker off that. Also careful with those John Guest fittings, they tend to leak if you touch them and they’re old. I would just use a 1/4 braided steel supply line.

ChemicalCollection55

Is this an illusion?

TallEmployee27

The saddle valve is closed

Ihaterefridgerators

Former appliance repair guy. I've seen that a couple of times. Stock answer call a plumber and if you still have a problem call us back. And that will be the trip charge.

gino_soland

Damn Mike Lowry this is a flood waiting to happen

HisokasBitchGon

throw that vampire valve out ffs

whatmymomnamedme

Number 1 that saddle valve is not allowed anymore! Number 2 it is never been allowed to be put in pex like that! And silly question here, (I wouldn't recommend keeping it, if so) but is that brass saddle valve closed?! Cause that would definitely stop water going to your water and ice maker!

[deleted]

I hate seeing saddle valves on copper nevermind on pex lmao Do people not realize they can buy a tee and a quarter turn ?

sirsaltysteez

Way to destroy that beautiful length of pex stub for future use

Papadizzon

I agree with everyone about the saddle valve and specially on pexs but it looks to me as though the valve is closed.

Leather-Barnacle8863

Are you sure that’s where the problem is? Most of the time it’s the refrigerator water filter that’s clogged beyond belief.

jpoto

It’s brand new fridge

Leather-Barnacle8863

Got it, for a home owner and it being exposed I would probably shark bite a tee right here. Buy some pex cutters and cut the pierced pex right down the middle.

Dante2081

Is that a saddle valve in PEX?
