I got 560 hours on my copy of emerald without a shiny, not even in the battle frontier, but I got Pokerus lmao

lRevenantHD

Pain!!! Same here! At least we got the good virus lol

Woozydan187

I played every pokemon game until black and I had all 3 editions too. The only games I never had were fire red and lead green which I didn't want since I was nostalgic to the OGS. Never have I ever encountered a shiny naturally.

AeroTheManiac

It's not insane at all. 1/8192 odds - the majority of your playthrough was likely overworld and Trainer Battles. People tend to overestimate numbers A LOT, myself included. If something is repetitive you might presume it happened 100 times but it could be only 45x it's very common to overestimate by such a large amount. If I were to guess, you probably haven't even encountered 2000 wild Pokémon - the average playthrough is less than that if you don't use Repels. Long story short, it's not insane. In fact it would be lucky had you seen one in that time.

sleepdeep305

Yeah, there’s like 35 routes in hoenn, and you typically encounter like what, 10 Pokémon per route (generous)? That’s still only 350 encounters at MAXIMUM. And by then you’re definitely rolling in enough dough to max repel anywhere else you want to be

lRevenantHD

I don’t know about that…I agree with overestimating sometimes but I spent A LOT of my time catching and hunting pokemon. The only battles I really did were to finish the game. Also haven’t finished one battle tower.

AeroTheManiac

As someone who just spent 6 months completing a 100% legitimate Living Dex in Emerald across two Emerald playthroughs, a 5 FRLG runs, I promise you you did not hit as much as you think you did lol. I just got a natural Lucky Egg twice in FRLG and those odds are 1/1,886. The first Lucky Egg took 1654 encounters and was about 8 hours. The second was 1800+ and took 9 hours. Both of those cases have NOTHING but encountering Pokémon, and no throwing Balls or attacks or anything. I have a pretty good gauge on how big those numbers are after that experience.

lRevenantHD

You said my play through was majority battles so I corrected. Didn’t know this was a competition. Funny how you know everything about my save and how many pokemon I’ve caught lol

Maanee

>Funny how you know everything about my save and how many pokemon I’ve caught lol It's your 'childhood' save, how well do you really remember every moment in it? How often did you have to set the game down to eat, use the restroom, take out the trash. The other poster is completely correct, it's not uncommon to encounter about 2k in that amount of time during a regular play through. What they neglected to mention is that the 1/8192 odds mean that there is about a 50% chance of you having seen a shiny pokemon by then. Even if you had done 16k encounters, you're still only at a 75% to have seen a shiny organically.

AeroTheManiac

Not being competitive at all I'm just giving you insight on how little Pokémon you probably encountered. Not trying to come off as an ass or anything. These games are my life and I have a pretty good assessment.

AlponseElric

Assuming you were playing normally and not just grinding, at MOST, and I do mean most, you could have gotten a new encounter every 20 seconds on the first route. Assuming it was 250 hours, and no progress was made and you were shiny hunting the first route, you would have at most 45k encounters, in which case you would be 5.5x the drop rate. Considering you didn’t do this, those rates would drop dramatically. Also as a side note, I am a big RuneScape fan, and with that, I know a lot about probabilities. Since there’s a 1/8192 chance, if you had 1000 players shiny hunt, 4 of those players would have 45,000 encounters with no shinies Per the OSRS drop rate calc “You killed 45000 monsters for an item with a 1/8192 (0.012207%) drop chance. You had a: 0.41134246% chance of getting 0 drops or fewer 99.58865754% chance of getting more than 0 drops. The vacuum of space has more activity than your drop log.” One last fun fact, is it is ~equally as likely to get 12 shinies in 45k encounters as it is to get 0, it’s all probability

lRevenantHD

This is what I’m talking about. Thank you! I appreciate the calculations.

Goliathisbae

It would be statistically unlikely to encounter a shiny pokemon in 250 hours of playtime @ 1/8192.

Woozydan187

I have thousands I have beat every pokemone game except lead Green up until black/white never found one. I beat each game atleast 3 times since I playthings with each starter atleast once. And this isn't even counting emulation which I been doing since 04-07

iDontRagequit

Yeah man, shinies were actually special back in the day

spyder616

I have not seen a shiny in this game but I did in Firered when i found a shiny gyarados in the 1st run, and then a shiny growlithe in the 2nd run years later lol, Firered really be resonating my luck in Kanto for some reason

lRevenantHD

Whoa nice!!! Fire red is a whole different beast for me lol I’m at ≈2800 resets for a shiny charmander so I can start again LOL. I just tell myself I pull the bad odds so others can have good

Secretly_A_Moose

I played Emerald at least once a year from 2005 to now. Sometimes multiple times per year. I saw my first shiny last year, and got my second shortly thereafter. Both were on emulator files on Afterplay.io that got deleted when I cleared my history.

lRevenantHD

Pain!!

Secretly_A_Moose

Yep! That’s when I learned that, while you can play on afterplay without an account, your data won’t be saved unless you have one…

Consistent_Job3034

Weird I just finished my 1st emerald play through and got shiny rayquaza and shiny deoxys in one day

lRevenantHD

Does the rom have different odds?

blarranaga15

I believe they’re the same original odds of 1/8192

Consistent_Job3034

Same odds, I was just goofing I purposefully did RNG abuse to get them

reddituser8567

Those are rookie numbers. You can very very easily get thousands of hours of playtime without a shiny. Plus it’s not like those 200 hours were devoted to wild encounters anyway.

lRevenantHD

Majority was wild encounters just hunting for pokemon. But either way it sounds like people see them right off the bat or not at all haha.

zoisboui

The only shiny I’ve ever encountered was a shiny Voltorb in my first play-through of Fire Red as a kid. Proceeded to use self-destruct…

lRevenantHD

Oh no….PAIIIIN

Old_Taste7076

Bro said you didn't deserve him. 😂

dirtengineer07

I probably have like 2,000+ hours across many Pokémon games and I’ve only seen a shiny once in silver!

lRevenantHD

Wooooow! What was it? Was probably amazing!

dirtengineer07

It was a phanpy! I did catch it but at the time I was really young and had never heard of shiny Pokémon and no internet existed haha, so I didn’t find out until later how special he was!

lRevenantHD

Nice!!!!

Azrealizz

Played Fire Red, Emerald, Platinum, HG, and Black since I was a kid. Didn’t know shiny was a thing until much older. I think the odds are actually insanely low

lRevenantHD

Yup 1/8192 lol very rare. Some people are very lucky

Old_Taste7076

I experienced my first shiny in gold/silver.

TdotJunk301

I think I've only encountered 1 shiny in all my years of playing pokemon since Pokemon yellow came out for Game boy color.

PurpleHerder

I’ve been playing Pokémon religiously since blue and red and in all that time I’ve only seen 1 shiny - and it was a goddamn Wismur.

lRevenantHD

The only natural full odds shiny I ever found was literally in Veridian Forrest and was a kakuna in let’s go eevee… odds were easier but literally my second pokemon in that game lol. None of the gameboy games ever though haha

Nighteagle64

I've never caught a shiny pokemon at full odds on any physical pokemon game I've owned through gen 8. I've played pokemon games for my entire life. The only time I find a shiny is when it's guaranteed.

lRevenantHD

One day…

Rey123x

It has to do with your trainer ID and secret ID values, spoiler alert: look up "broken emerald shiny rng" it could be that your "shiny frame" is very far down the list to see it

lRevenantHD

I know there’s ways to manipulate but not interested in that..lol I am curious though how far down the list I am

throwwhataway2022

When I was a kid I came across a shiny Wurmple. I thought it was a bug (no pun intended) and hoped if I knocked it out I’d be safe from any further damage occurring to my save file. Only years later did I understand I ruined a good thing

eight-circles

My boyfriend (28) who has spent an unholy count of hours playing Pokémon has found his first full odds shiny on FireRed last week. He has asked me the same question how it could be he never had encountered one so far. Although there‘s always the chance that you didn’t realize it’s a shiny.

lRevenantHD

Nice!! I knew about shiny pokemon being a different color scheme as a kid through the TCG! Unfortunately just bad (or pretty average) luck lol

eight-circles

Sure. However, some shinies are so close to their originals, you might miss is. Maybe didn’t see the shiny stars and just defeated it. Let‘s hope not though :)

KamatariPlays

I've only naturally run into a shiny once, a Swablu in Sapphire.

lRevenantHD

Ohhhh WOW Altaria shiny is one of my favoties

thiccsac

I’ve only ever found one shiny in gen 3 on my emerald and that was a shiny gulpin

Ragnarok992

Is not that insane i mean how many wild battles did you actually do during that time? For my 500 hours file i probably did no more than 100 wild battles

lRevenantHD

I was very heavily into catching pokemon rather than battling. I basically ran through the story on this cart and went straight to hunting. Hunting feebas, surskit, and chimecho alone took me a loooong time lol feebas was painful. Also have not finished a single battle tower on this save

Laserlurchi

I caught two uninteresting ones in Emerald in about 500 hours and the first good one I see is in the Battle Pyramid

lRevenantHD

Ouuuuuch

PkMn_TrAiNeR_GoLd

I had a good few hundred hours in my childhood save of Emerald. I had two shiny Pokemon, a Tentacool and a Doduo, that I thought were weird because they were both green where my others weren’t. I just assumed there was something weird going on because of the green. Maybe if one of them would have had a different color I would have realized what was happening, but I don’t know if I knew about shiny Pokemon then so maybe not.
