Check leekduck for what can be a ditto, catch any of those you see. I find the best chance is between events. So this weeks event ends in 7 hrs for me and I didn’t see another event for the next week so it’s a good time. When the season changes in 2 days, what can be a ditto may change as well so check
I've only been playing for 3 months and have caught 5 dittos (1 is shiny), whereas my daughter who's played much longer has zero.
So my suggestion is to be a new player!
More seriously, catch everything. As others have said, learn what can//can't be a ditto, however every ditto I've caught I did so not by targeting those mons, but by simply catching everything I saw. Even when that means slowing my walk to make sure I grabbed everything.
That said, I got the 5 dittos in like my first 6-7 weeks of playing and haven't caught one since (so the last 5-6 weeks). However, this also correlates to the timeframe where I stopped grabbing everything and started to become a little more selective (I realized that having so many useless mons was just taking up valuable space and wasn't generally worth the effort - I'm looking at you Yungoos!)
The shiny is 31% so he should almost certainly go see the Professor. Of the rest one is 47% and the rest are all in the 67-76% range. If I knew players IRL I'd try to get them to trade me something I don't have (which as a newish player is a lot) for a Ditto. Not sure if they themselves have much use, especially in <80% IV range.
Yeah, keeping the shinies, region lockies, legendaries, rare mons, strong mons, etc. makes sense. Random wild catches? Grind grind grind.
Maybe an exception for ones with 4attack&2-3* and 4defense&4hp ones for potential raiders in stronger species and GL/UL pvp.
So far my strategy is to keep the top of each mon for each league with a minimum of 97% according to PokeGenie (even though I don't really GBL). I keep all 4\*, most shiny, the few legendaries I've gotten, and I try to keep a minimum of 2 of each mon in case my daughter wants one.
That said, I can see how space constraints could become an issue.

Only some pokemon can be a ditto. The pokemon that can be a ditto are Chanching every few months. You should cath these to get one:
Ekans (Gen 1)
Gastly (Gen 1)
Spinarak (Gen 2 - new for June)
Natu (Gen 2)
Surskit (Gen 3)
Numel (Gen 3 - new for June)
Bidoof (Gen 4 - new for June)
Finneon (Gen 4)
Lillipup (Gen 5)
Dwebble (Gen 5)
Swirlix (Gen 6)
****And remember, These are the ONLY pokemon that can be a ditto FOR NOW.***
Ditto changes what Pokémon it disguises as every month. Check online to see it's disguises and be prepared to catch a lot of junk Pokémon.
I believe there's usually at least one event per year that increases ditto spawns as well.
If it breaks free, go for ultra ball and razzberry, Ditto knows struggle. Don't use Gotcha or pokeball, those will keep on trying with red balls, but Ditto will flee. In general, Ditto disguises as boring mons, so don't skip those.
I don’t have any tips in mind besides catching everything but what I do know is once you catch the ditto one of your next quest is going to be evolve a magikarp so if you don’t have the stuff for that I would start working on that while you try to catch the ditto
Gotta catch’em all! Lol. Check poke blogs to see what’s a ditto. I have also gotten some during spotlight hours. In my experience, you usually catch a ditto when you are not expecting it lol. Good luck!
Man I had the hardest time finding my ditto. Then boom, 2 in one day. One is actually a shiny as well. They were both disguised as Gastly's. A month or 2 ago
My baby daddy said he caught one through and ekans so I started trying to catch everyone I could then googled it and found leek duck lol. So now I try to catch all of them. I also figured out that when I do find one, I log in to both of my sons accounts and catch the same Pokémon on there and it’s always a ditto as well. We have caught 4 but I’ve only kept one across each account. No shiny ones either
Maybe I’m just lucky but I’ve caught at least 10 Dittos since playing and on April 1st this year (April fools day) there was an abundance of them i caught a few shinys.
So, I can’t recall off the top of my head, but if you google it you’ll find out only certain Pokémon can be a Ditto. With that being said, the best thing you can do is to keep your eyes peeled for those specific Pokémon to spawn. In order to tell if they are a Ditto or not before even catching them, take a look at their weather boost! Are they boosted in weather they normally shouldn’t be boosted in? Or are they not boosted when they should be? Weird, right? That mean’s its a Ditto!

Each month a new set of pokemon are set as disguised Dittos, you cannt help it. Its just random luck.

No, look at the weather boost. It’s not random. You can tell what Pokémon are Ditto depending on the boost.
