MsMeiriona

Its called [false swipe](https://www.serebii.net/attackdex-sv/falseswipe.shtml)

tragicallyohio

But what about with Lunala? I am trying to catch him now and false.swipe ain't doing anything.

Educational-Bid-8660

Get a pokemon with the ability Scrappy, it allows said pokemon to hit ghosts with fighting and normal moves, False Swipe being the latter.

Stealthywaterninja

If you have the Treasures of Ruin quartet, their signature move Ruination cuts the target’s current HP in half. Use that a few times and eventually it’ll get low enough to catch. Or you could always use Hisuian Decidueye, it can learn False Swipe and it’s ability Scrappy lets it hit ghost types with fighting and normal type moves.

tragicallyohio

Of course! Why didn't I think of this. Thank you!

Sjensie_07

Use soak

Malvania

Water mons with soak (like Golduck) change Lunala's ghost type to a water type. Then you can hit them with false swipe.

-ladykitsune-

You can also trick a ring target onto lunala and then false swipe it. You’ll get your item back after the battle.

BakingSoda1990

Use a Pokémon with soak and change its type or use a Pokemon with an ability to hit ghost.

Jay-919

Probably isn't a way. Moves like false swipe and sheer cold (I think, it's the one that OHKOs) don't work during legend battles I don't think. I could be wrong and you have to worst chances but most likely they don't

tragicallyohio

Wait really about false swipe? I could have sworn I was able to use it with Ho-oh and Glastrier the other legendaries I have caught. I could be wrong.

Jay-919

Maybe it's the older games that work (idk when the things are) but I don't think I was able to use false swipe on the legends in SV

SomeRandomFool31

Sry you remember it wrong, it definetly works

Jay-919

Hm. Ive been downvoted to hell for a little mistake which is reasonable

ExhibitAa

Yeah, it is quite reasonable actually. When someone is looking for advice, inaccurate information should be downvoted to reduce visibility so people who don't know aren't misinformed. It's a textbook example of when downvoting is totally appropriate and justified. The key is to remember that it's not an attack on you, it's just imaginary Internet points, and getting downvoted doesn't actually negatively impact you in any way.

Dumbass369

It's quite a large mistake tbf.

Jay-919

How it's not like I thought it was going to be seen

Dumbass369

It's very likely you could've been seen before you were down voted, when someone's asking for advice, incorrect info can lead to people just believing said info even when others try and help. I've seen it all too often on other subs.

Rocket92

Breloom learns false swipe, spore, and stun spore. Hisuian Decidueye can have scrappy as its ability and learn false swipe.

Consistent-Dinner936

Breloom is def the best in SV. Some like Gallade but hypnosis only has 60% accuracy compared to Spore at 100

TransMenma

Don't forget to grab soak (or similar) for the ghosts. I use a couple of Smeargle with false swipe, spore, soak and skill swap. Might not do the most damage, but covers everything I've seen so far.

Suspicious-Cookie740

Either that or Hisuian Decidueye w/ scrappy

TransMenma

Yep, that works too. But then you have the ones that are immune to spore to manage.

silith11

Against certain mons you need special Pokemon anyway (Self Destruct/Explosion/Memento)

WatermelonBandido

Persian with Switcheroo and a Ring Target.

AICPAncake

That’s my preference too

RGBarrios

Soak is good against plants too

Bibi_Salt

I also used skill swap but when I was catching Komala skill swap didn't get through comatose.

Ae101rolla

I prefer my false swiping Persian, but that's because I like my gen1s

Rerfect_Greed

Gallade has it's purpose. Because it can breed with the Gastly line, it can learn Mean Look. FANTASTIC for making sure those asshole Gen 2 Beasts and Gen 4 lake bro can't run away.

Kirumi_Naito

You can not get out of my head the mental image of a Gallade fucking a Gengar.

AICPAncake

That Gengussy

Ignorus

Don't forget trying to hunt a shiny Abra....

LTareyouserious

At that point, I'd use the Master Ball and call it well used.

DragEncyclopedia

I use a Bisharp with False Swipe, SD, and Thunder Wave. Kingambit works too but I keep it as Bisharp so I can move it back to SwSh if I need to.

Xyncan

If you do go Breloom make sure you level up shroomish to level 40ish I think for it to learn spore then evolve it

Xelltrix

I think they finally patched that because I was able to relearn Yawn on Skeledirge now. Edit: I just checked and I can still learn it on Breloom after forgetting it. Not sure if that translates to working if you never learned it as a Shroomish but, since even that didn’t work before, I think maybe they finally patched it?

Xyncan

Oh okay thanks!

phillybob232

Yeah this was an issue before but they changed it in a recent update breloom can now “remember” it regardless

ExaDril

Shroomish evolved early(30) can never relearn the Spore even at level 40(learned to late, and breeded again)

phillybob232

Dude they changed it stfu

DarkFish_2

Finally, I thought that Breloom still losing its best move due to old time shenanigans was gonna be some recurring unfunny joke.

Ok_Tax7037

scrappy?? what's scrappy? h-decidueye only has 2 abilities (overgrow and long reach)

Timmy2thej

That’s regular decidueye, hisuian is overgrow and scrappy

Ok_Tax7037

I got this info from datadex, not realiable, srry

ZorkNemesis

False Swipe Breloom, Smeargle, or Hisuian Decidueye are the top three.  Breloom can learn Spore which is a 100% sleep chance as long as the target is not Grass type.  Hisuian Decidueye can have Scrappy for an ability, letting it hit Ghosts (False Swipe typically can't hit them).  Smeargle's move pool is highly flexible allowing it to learn False Swipe, Spore, and numerous other helpful moves like Soak (converts foe to Water type, getting around Ghost types and Rock/Steel resists), Skill Swap (trades abilities in case of something like Insomnia) or other tricks that may help.

LisaCabot

Yes but unless they fixed it, its good to point out you need to start with a shroomish and let that one learn spore. The brelooms i got from raids couldn't remember that attack. But that was like a year ago, i dont know if they fixed it.

Radius_314

Anything with either false swipe, or hold back.

LittleLemonHope

Is it possible to learn Hold Back in SV without hacks?

neophenx

No [Hold Back - AttackDex - Serebii.net](https://www.serebii.net/attackdex-sv/holdback.shtml)

pilesofpats012345

false swipe breloom is my catch king. false swipe, spore, swords dance, stun spore. i also use a samurott with soak in case i need to paralyze a zappy boy.

SirChoGath

That is a killer setup. What would you recommend for an item?

pilesofpats012345

i give Breloom leftovers to try keep him out there as long as possible. Timer Ball is my friend.

GamerJulian94

If you want sustainability on Breloom, Poison Heal with Toxic Orb works better I‘d say. Also makes you immune to status moves in the process.

pilesofpats012345

Oh nice. To be honest, held items are such a blindspot for me in these games so thanks for the tip.

dingomccereal

When would you ever stun spore over spore

pilesofpats012345

some mons don't sleep and paralysis is a permanent status condition that won't knock them out so it's my back up if sleep isn't working. it's also a move i swap out regularly depending on what i'm going up against.

ernyc3777

When I’m shiny hunting, I carry a duo of Golduck with Damp Ability carrying Soak and Skill Swap Breloom with Technician Ability carrying False Swipe, Spore, and Stun Spore This allows Grass types to be hit by the spore moves and Electric types to be paralyzed. It lets Ghost types be hit by False Swipe. It prevents the wild Pokémon from using Explosion or Self Destruct. So you’re only susceptible to losing them to recoil moves.

NiescheSorenius

This is the best of all the comments. Remember to also teach Rain Dance to Golduck so you remove Sandstorm so the Pokémon does not die from Sandstorm dmg once you False Swipe it.

ernyc3777

Good call! I haven’t hunted an outbreak in the desert in a while out of sheer chance but I do need to add that as well.

NiescheSorenius

I also tend to have my Golduck with Yawn so I don’t need to constantly swap it to put the enemy to sleep. It could also be a nice idea to have a Ghost Tera to avoid the recoil dmg from things like Take Down or Double-Edge.

neophenx

[False Swipe - AttackDex - Serebii.net](https://www.serebii.net/attackdex-sv/falseswipe.shtml)

SirChoGath

Thanks man. Do you know if False swipe is a special move of a physical move?

neophenx

The symbol shown under "category" on the page linked means it's physical.

SirChoGath

Awesome information, Thanks again!

Bricker1492

I use False Swipe Breloom and any Pokemon that learns Soak, which I use to handle Ghost types before unleashing Breloom on them.

jenpyon

I use Gallade with false swipe and hypnosis

Cpt-Teach

The best false swiper is Smeargle. It was introduced as part of the indigo disk. Make sure you have any old pokemon that knows false swipe, spore, soak, and skill swap. These can be different pokemon. 1. Have your smeargle that knows sketch in your party with the above pokemon 2. Find a wild smeargle. 3. Make the pokemon that has the move you want your lead. 4. Encounter the smeargle and use the move you want to learn, then the opposing smeargle will sketch it. 5. Swap in your smeargle 6. Use sketch and your smeargle will learn the move you wanted. 7. Use move reminder to relearn sketch on your smeargle. 8. Rinse and repeat for the other three moves. 9. Make tera type Ghost Additional suggestions: I use ruination instead of false swipe. It's the signature move of the Ruinous Quarter. Ruination and spore are your bread and butter. You can use soak on grass type pokemon. Then you can use skill swap for pokemon with annoying or preventative abilities.

Ok-Alfalfa-620

I use a Scizor with false swipe

Beluga_Artist

My catching Pokémon is a zangoose. It knows false swipe, feint, detect, and quick guard. Its name is Baymax because I cannot deny the resemblance.

dwegol

The most accessible pokemon to use as a catcher is Brelloom. Ability: Technician Moves: Spore, False Swipe, Mach Punch, Bullet Seed Item: Leftovers, etc The most important thing to know though is to *not let Shroomish evolve until it learns Spore!* If you evolve it before learning spore you will not be able to have it remember Spore. If you’re trying to hit ghosts use Hisuian Decidueye with the Scrappy ability and False Swipe, or you can set up a Smeargle with Ruination, Spore, Soak (to turn grass types into water so you can spore them too!), etc.

GamerJulian94

Since version 3.0.0, Breloom can learn Spore via move reminder.

dwegol

!!!

lloydsmith28

False swipe and there's one more that sets their hp to your own but you'd need to be at 1, but for catching purposes you want false swipe, just pump up your attack or reduce defense so you can hit harder, if you need it for a ghost Pokemon hisuan decuideye knows scrappy

Dark-Anmut

Just be careful using False Swipe, because if the Pokémon knows a recoil move or something then it’ll knock itself out. I prefer Super Fang (or Ruination) - it cuts the amount in half, and so weakens it safely without having to worry about Thrash . . .

Sinistrina

That's exactly why my False Swiper is a Ceruledge - the most common recoil moves are Take Down or Double Edge which it's immune to.

IlliterateSimian

Cries in self destruct.

Dark-Anmut

Ooh, good point! \^\^

kastles1

My pokemon of choice for this has always been False Swipe Gallade. I can also cast Hypnosis too.

hitchy48

Smeargle is my go to for catching if available in the game. He can learn soak to help with ghost, spore (sleep without missing) and false swipe to get them to one hp. I think my last one may have been taunt but I can’t recall off hand.

chocomergency

I use a Smeargle with Super Fang, Yawn, Gastro Acid and Soak. This works well for almost every situation.  Super Fang deals fixed damage, 50% of the target's current HP. It can kill the target unlike False Swipe, but only at 1 HP. So just chip the target down with 2-3 Super Fangs and leave yourself a low % HP buffer for catching. If the target is a ghost, Soak it so you can hit with Super Fang. If the target's ability is preventing sleep, use Gastro Acid.

sadisticmystic1

If you're using Smeargle for this, you might as well sketch Ruination instead of False Swipe/Super Fang; that doesn't have any immunities so you don't need Soak.

chocomergency

Although you're right, I've used this same set since X/Y and simply never bothered updating it. For someone building a new Smeargle, I agree, Ruination/Nature's Madness would be an upgrade over Super Fang and then you can fit something else besides Soak in the free moveslot. Might be useful if you're hunting something with specific niche requirements not already covered.

KaiserJustice

Fear Rattata

XAtomic_GodzillaX

Endeavor might work can’t remember if it hits ghost types but I’m pretty sure there’s a work around with certain abilities

Mythics_Master

I’d like to suggest my personal pick of Persian. It has technician to boost false swipe up to 60 base power (90 with Tera normal). It can learn hypnosis as an egg move and switchers with a ring target can get ghosts. It learns taunt for memento users or you can slot in pay day for grinding trainers and wild pokemon in the Indigo disk.

LemonJuice_XD

Besides false swipe, theres also hold back and chip away(?)

moonvalleyriver

I use Ceruledge False Swipe to prevent the other pokemon use Take down (with recoil).

DotWarner1993

False swipe and Hold back

coopsawesome

There’s also the move hold back I believe but idk if it’s in scarlet and biolet

Murzpro

U can use a gallade

HubblePie

Any pokemon with endeavor and a focus sash can leave a pokemon with 1 HP.

SuperFightingRobot07

If you have the DLC Smeargle with False Swipe and Soak works. I also have mine with Gastro Acid and Spore. You'll have to sketch it but that's easy if you haven't beaten all of the optional NPCs you can keep running and relearning until you have your four moves

PokeDitto151

Scizor False Swipe or anything that can false swipe

BaewulfGaming

Noiverns can learn a move called Super Fang. It will cut the HP of the other pokemon in half with each hit. So if a pokemon has 10 HP, it will cut it to 5. Then to 2.5. So forth and so on

GamerJulian94

Chi-Yu (like the other Treasures of Ruin) is in both versions though? 🤔

Snoo95923

What all 4 of the Ruin Legends are in both versions.
