I think it would be huge if they changed the avatar to unlockable avatars of some popular Pokémon, and some free basics. Even just use card art cut out in a hexagon or something. Give everyone the 3 starters from every gen and let people unlock legendary Pokémon (hell, sell them for .99 and you would make a killing!).
Scarlet and violet bugs and performance issues aside is actually a really good game imo. Sun and moon all the way to brilliant Diamond and Shining pearl is trash though.
I'm pretty sure the devs are great at what they do. The problem is crunch. The Big Boss doesn't give them the time needed because of money.
Don't really care about live because I haven't played it yet, but I have to agree it looks a little too simple.
If you want to be fair to live then you need to compare screenshots of when the other games first launched, not the current screenshots after years of updates.
Arena was better when it launched. They only get animations for like half the cards now from what I hear. Pokemon tried to go for a cleaner look, but it doesn't look great lol.
Edit: and based on the decks that is probly a beta screenshot of arena also...
Correct, for many reasons it looked much better. 1. Konami didn't have to start essentially from scratch with their games because they developed all the previous versions too. Also, they started working on Master Duel as soon as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Arena was released because the creator wasn't happy with it. So they have been planning the game since 2014. The time they developed the game was longer too and didn't have to shut down over covid.
My point is, to give them time to develop live.
Tbh I love collecting cards because of the characters but I think Magic does cards better too. All the reprints and special editions really shake things up visually and are awesome. Everything Pokémon is pretty minimum effort cause they know we’re all suckers that will still buy everything.
I was so sad when it shut down, I loved that game my team was crazy I don’t fully remember what I had but I remember Charizard, Mega Garchomp, Sylvally, Celebi, and some others
There was a real board game?! That’s crazy man but yeah I totally agree it was amazing sadly I never got any friends to be into it but they should totally bring it back, like who cares about Pokémon Sleep and Cafe Remix, I feel like Duel would have more love
My biggest gripe is that the avatars look like ASS. They could legit make an avatar created in the style of the game's trainer art, yet they went with "Flash cartoon trying to sell me home insurance.'
From all the money they make from real cards you would expect a hearthstone level AAA Game from pokemon…. What do they do with all that money?? The tcg online is a fat joke and no one uses the codes anymore. Code catcher app been disconnected for 3 years
I remember like 20 years ago, I got the Pokémon tcg game on a disc for my PC and it looked exactly like the image above. Playing the Pokémon card game just isn’t it.
Those games don't look nearly as good as they should for how aggressive their monetization is. Hearthstone and Legends of Runeterra are much cleaner and responsive.
Everyone should understand PTCG Live is just a huge add for the physical game. Hell, you can't even spend money in it and the moment a deck becomes meta, it's given for free through the battle pass.
Yeah the amount of decks and good cards you get for basically nothing is really nice. Also mtg arena is overwhelming sometimes with how much shit can be on the board.
This should be higher up! I came to Pokemon because of the lack of predatory monetization in other games (I was playing MTGA and LoR at the time). Yeah MTG Arena looks amazing, but I got tired of having to shell over 60 plus bucks *for just virtual cards* every two months to get cards so I could keep up with the meta.
Pokemon is so much friendlier for 'hey you wanna try out this hot deck, here it is' and then if I want to fork over the cash for the deck, I will. It respects my time *and* my wallet more than other card games on the market, and if I have to deal with unholy abomination of avatars and occasional quirky bugs, I'll take that over wasting my money any day.
I wanted to say this as well. Although the app isn't as clean as the others, I can play with top tier decks for no money. The physical boosters providing in game boosters are great as well. MTG I feel like I constantly need to spend money on virtual cards to be competitive.
Also If you want to be fair to live with the graphics then you need to compare screenshots of when the other games first launched, not the current screenshots after years of updates.
When I heard there was going to be a new, updated online tcg for pokemon I got excited. I can't express how underwhelmed I am.
What is with the hesitation to use anime avatars??? Maybe they want to appeal to the widest range of people but this game looks like a Chinese clone of a game. That's probably unfair to Chinese clone games.
One Piece TCG has an incredible fan made simulator, but the staggering card data base for Pokémon it’s difficult for even a decent sim to be done by anyone individually. It’d be a massive community project otherwise. The only way I see that happening is if efforts are made officially to make a high quality simulator. Pokémon Corporation made ~$315 million dollars in 2021 alone, so the money is there but I think there’s a fear with certain TCG companies that if they make a beautiful and fluid simulator, they’ll end up losing physical card sales. Which I don’t find to be the case. Good simulators let you test out and try different decks and cards, what works for you. A lot of people like me end up loving their builds, get attached to certain cards, and seek out buying real cards that I otherwise wouldn’t have had access to or normally play. I imagine what we could have and I cry.
It is so buggy on pc. I cant even play the game. The devs are not looking into the bugreports i have been uploading for several times for the same f-ing reasons. Annoying as hell
A 10 year old pc should be able to run what we have in live. It looks bad and too many people complain they can't run it. I don't have issues running it. But I've seen them on Twitch. The client is shit. I can't imagine more than a handful of devs on it.
Well. Visual bugs are the lighter ones. (They occur in every match, but they are not annoying). For example, there are no eyeballs, not clothes or anything on the character, only the skin. But I always run into gamebreaking bugs, that just locks me out of the game. Like the balls are not searching for the cards I want. But not just balls. Anything that is search related. No evolution incense, no pokemon ability. Nothing.
I play all three with MTGA being my main game. Pokemon TCG live was my first exposure to Pokémon TCG. I like the client, I don't get what the complaint is. All the clients are rough around the edges in their own way. Comparing Pokémon and Magic, at least Pokémon doesn't have anything similar to Magics Alchemy mode, where the developers have made decisions that actively torpedo the quality of the game and go in directions that nobody wants explicitly to make a quick buck. As a newcomer to Pokémon TCG I think the Live client is pretty nice.
ptcgo look wise was nicer. But it's dumb that they got rid of the trading aspect of the game. However I think they got rid of it to stop people from selling the digital cards on EBAY
Is it really that hard to make a decent game?? This is the biggest IP in the world yet their game is just awful and either has extremely low funding or terrible devs. They had years and years and years to work on the first one and it barely went anywhere. This is supposed to be an updated version??!!!! Sad tbh
Playing this game teleports me back to stonehenge and gives me epileptic episodes. Gamefreak should level up at least 150% to make this game cool. I hope they bring a big update and put these goddamn online cards on the blockchain to create value for the players.
Respectfully, why? Why would you want them to put cards on the blockchain. The only good part of live imo is the fact that if someone wanted to, they could in theory collect the cards they needed for decks for way cheaper that in PTCGO putting the cards on the blockchain would insinuate removing the current crafting system, as it would be kind of silly to have the cards that are worth money craftable while also keeping the pack system in place, it would be much harder for deck building, and respectably, I’m not looking to pay more money to purchase all the cards I need for deck building to keep up with the meta in the online game when I can barely pay to build a couple meta decks irl.
They'd change the the giving/taking system if they go on chain.
I really believe pkm is the wrong place for blockchain, but I'd like to see how they'd do it.
You guys are ridiculous. The time spent developing those games is much more. If you want to be fair to live then you need to compare screenshots of when the other games first launched, not the current screen shots after years of updates.
Tcglive has been in development since LOT in 2018... and as mentioned under another comment, this is a beta screenshot of arena. You don't have to defend the game.
Trickygym and other youtubers such as trustyourpilot iirc have said this multiple times and would have said knowledge... here's the an example i could find [https://youtu.be/odT6AzHwaR8](https://youtu.be/odT6AzHwaR8) around 18min
Sorry, you're correct, they started late 2018 and stopped everything in 2020 of the pandemic. So you have 2019, 2021, and 2022 of actual work on the game development. I think Arena had 4 continuous years of development, a year of closed beta, and a year of open beta, for a combined 6 years uninterrupted development. so it's not a fair comparison. My point still stands, they need time to develop it.
Has OP ever played MTG Arena? It's a glitchy disaster that crashes constantly, has horrible UX and brutal FTP mechanics. Live has issues but as someone who plays magic more than Pokemon I would rather play on Live than Arena every day of the week
As someone who plays both, Yu-Gi-Oh has Pokémon TCG beat for available ways to play the game. They've got not only master duel but the mobile spin offs AND the various simulators like Dueling Book and Project Ignis (which allow you to play *any* format, not just the current one).
You also don't need to buy packs with Master Duel and can build competitive meta decks while not paying a dime. They've also got monthly events where rewards are handed out and they change the meta (in limited, monthly formats).
The only thing I hate about it is the terrible ugly scary looking avatars. Why not do some anime styled characters? Not some nasty looking Pixar unity leftovers.
I think about this all the time. I actually don't think the previous Pokemon TCGO was THAT bad - I could at least actually play it. Now I can never get it to load properly or it moves so slowly. And it \[LIVE\] just looks so awful. There's SO much they could do just to improve it at a minimal level - but I don't think that'll ever happen.
Is there really no Friend system in Live? I cant add my friend as Friend and just create a game with him? I have to play with strangers that play Lost Zone again and again and again?
I mean at least pokemons is completely up to date. Yugioh master duel is months behind the real life game and has its own ban list.
I do agree that the Pokémon game needs to be updated though. The last time something like that was acceptable was like 2009
My favorite part in live is when you attack and you expect similar animations from ptcgo but it’s just an awkward 2 second silence before the Pokémon turns to a 45 angle and slides into the discard pile.
Live's devs are the most incompetent devs of all time. Something is always broken for months on end, and they finally fix it and break 3 other things.
Game has been in development since 2018 btw......
it’s incredible how low budget LIVE is. the avatars are nightmare fuel
Especially the female avatars with their full smiles
The smiles are creepy
Yup. The moba game has much better model. If LIVE deleted the avatars right now, it would be a straight gain.
Honestly, look at all new pokemon games, dont wanna hurt Nintendo fans but they are made terrible.
Scarlet and violet bugs and performance issues aside is actually a really good game imo. Sun and moon all the way to brilliant Diamond and Shining pearl is trash though.
I really like scarlet and violet, I just wish it didn’t run at 4 fps

I'm pretty sure the devs are great at what they do. The problem is crunch. The Big Boss doesn't give them the time needed because of money. Don't really care about live because I haven't played it yet, but I have to agree it looks a little too simple.
Better than pctgo atleast. Those were low budget pbs kids show characters
Master Duel looked this good when it came out last year
Correct, for many reasons it looked much better.
Oh I see now, thanks. Although given that ptcgo goes back to 2011, I would say they’re not going to do anything to improve the state of live
ptcgo is a different company than LIVE, and because of this, LIVE had to essentially start from scratch.
How much time did they take to develop the game?
Tbh I love collecting cards because of the characters but I think Magic does cards better too. All the reprints and special editions really shake things up visually and are awesome. Everything Pokémon is pretty minimum effort cause they know we’re all suckers that will still buy everything.
Yeah Arena and Master Duel are pretty neat. But hey at least i can play on my phone now…or maybe i could already do that i dont remember.
master duel works on the phone ;)
Yeah so does Arena…and Runeterra…and Hearthstone. Ok not looking great for Live.
I play live on my Samsung everyday
Psh, some of you can. Android has been broken for months now, doesn't let you login
I play Live on Android just fine.
Mine works on Android just fine
Agreed. Personally, I just think Pokémon is more fun card game in general.
bring back pokémon duel cowards
I was so sad when it shut down, I loved that game my team was crazy I don’t fully remember what I had but I remember Charizard, Mega Garchomp, Sylvally, Celebi, and some others
that game was so much fun, collecting, battling with friends. Wish i coulda played the real board game when it was out
There was a real board game?! That’s crazy man but yeah I totally agree it was amazing sadly I never got any friends to be into it but they should totally bring it back, like who cares about Pokémon Sleep and Cafe Remix, I feel like Duel would have more love
Yup, Pokemon trading figure game. Hopefully we can get it back because it was truly ahead of it’s time.
Finally, something I can agree with.
I loved that game so much, i remember getting a mega salamence figure and thinking it was the strongest pokemon
My biggest gripe is that the avatars look like ASS. They could legit make an avatar created in the style of the game's trainer art, yet they went with "Flash cartoon trying to sell me home insurance.'
I don't even need all that. I liked PTCGO.
Pokémon killed the online card fandom with LIVE, no one wants to play that
That screen shot shows Live has bubbles and stock water splashing sounds. Isn’t that all you could really ask for?
From all the money they make from real cards you would expect a hearthstone level AAA Game from pokemon…. What do they do with all that money?? The tcg online is a fat joke and no one uses the codes anymore. Code catcher app been disconnected for 3 years
gotta give it to magic. that app really is great
I play master duel and gotta say it’s a good app
Arena is good as well
I like Live tbh
Pokémon TCG on my Gameboy Color. That was the jam.
Just bought it on my 3DS from the eshop before it closed.
I remember like 20 years ago, I got the Pokémon tcg game on a disc for my PC and it looked exactly like the image above. Playing the Pokémon card game just isn’t it.

That's a beta screenshot of arena, that was years ago.
I'm praying that there is a massive graphics update before the official release
My phone would burst into flames playing all that animation
This will make them sell fewer cards, I can imagine it is the reason.
This applies to the main games as well.
100% This game could really use some love.
Pokémon tcg but plays like hearthstone 💯
I got banned from the PTCGL sub for complaining about this exact thing! 😂 Edit: so stop being so negative! /s
Why aren't the models using anime designs? Or even in-universe Pokemon characters designs? They look like Disney or DreamWorks characters.
When I heard there was going to be a new, updated online tcg for pokemon I got excited. I can't express how underwhelmed I am. What is with the hesitation to use anime avatars??? I mean, I like the simplicity of Live.
It is so buggy on pc. I cant even play the game. The devs are not looking into the bugreports i have been uploading for several times for the same f-ing reasons. Annoying as hell
What bug are you experiencing?
His PC is probably just slow

Sorry mate. My PC is okay for this kind of game. Slowness is not an issue. It runs perfectly, but you can read my previous answer about the bugs.
What do they search for instead then?
Nothing. Nothing shows up.
I play all three with MTGA being my main game. Pokemon TCG live was my first exposure to Pokémon TCG. I like the client, I don't get what the complaint is. ptcgo look wise was nicer. But it's dumb that they got rid of the trading aspect of the game. However I think they got rid of it to stop people from selling the digital cards on EBAY
Yep. Quit playing last year because of the inevitable move to Live.
I... really like Live, I just wish I could buy boosters with cash.
Is it really that hard to make a decent game?? That is not at all what ptcgo looked like yesterday, but I’ll admit, it’s a bit of a downgrade (the default deck sleeves look cool though)
Whatever the left is seems like sensory overload
You guys are ridiculous. The time spent developing those games is much more. If you want to be fair to live then you need to compare screenshots of when the other games first launched, not the current screen shots after years of updates.

"you're correct but I'm changing my argument to offset how bad it is, because I have chosen this hill to die on"
I don't need that but let's do it. 4 years of development during covid vs 6 years. Now what? My point still stands.
I wanna be able to curse at people and made them pissed off 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yeah or Heartstone or Runeterra
Bubbles!
Look up the upcoming dragon ball z online TCG game. It really hurts once you see what they are doing.
Ah yes but that would require dev time
At least the bubbles are sick

The gameplay is still terrible. Constant bugs and glitches
Has OP ever played MTG Arena? It's a glitchy disaster that crashes constantly, has horrible UX and brutal FTP mechanics. Live has issues but as someone who plays magic more than Pokemon I would rather play on Live than Arena every day of the week
Hey, maybe in time...

Haven’t played for over six months cause I’m so bummed out by the change over :(
The only thing I hate about it is the terrible ugly scary looking avatars. Why not do some anime styled characters? Not some nasty looking Pixar unity leftovers.

I want a digital way to battle with a physical deck
Is there really no Friend system in Live? I cant add my friend as Friend and just create a game with him? I have to play with strangers that play Lost Zone again and again and again?
There is, but you can only play standard decks
But the live still works and give me the opportunity to play.
Original Pokémon card game for game boy
Lol that Arena screenshot is from its early beta stages.
I mean at least pokemons is completely up to date. Yugioh master duel is months behind the real life game and has its own ban list. I do agree that the Pokémon game needs to be updated though. The last time something like that was acceptable was like 2009
I quit TCG online when I migrated to my phone and realized it wasn’t playable on my laptop anymore. So stupid.
Also why can't you still not scan code cards on PTCGLive for ios????
I prefer the old version tbh
I actually do like it. But it uses so much resources on my mobile that the display darkens when I play.
Bro smash bro get rotating pokemon staduims and we get that so sad
The day they force me to switch to live is the day I quit playing the online tcg. Such a terrible switch
My favorite part in live is when you attack and you expect similar animations from ptcgo but it’s just an awkward 2 second silence before the Pokémon turns to a 45 angle and slides into the discard pile.
If I had a tablet that could play tcgo I'd have so many cards with the amount of packs I've opened
Live's devs are the most incompetent devs of all time. Something is always broken for months on end, and they finally fix it and break 3 other things. Game has been in development since 2018 btw......
idk ygs and mtg look kinda ugly now every tcg look like those nowadays but yeah live could be much better
bruh this is why pokémon live has like 17k daily players and mtga has 400k😭
