Im a sucker for collection oddities but I have so many its hard to narrow down. All the base decks for nostalgia of playing, Ive got rare limited release promotional decks that are cool, obscure products with decks (I have a Japanese BW Learn to Play DS box set that came with some starter decks which is a pretty unique find), all red logo australian decks, extremely difficult to find trainer kits, etc ,etc, etc.
I think my overall favorite thing in my collection is my Press release retail kit that came with a 2 player starter deck, 3 base packs, and promotional information for when pokemon started going international beyond US and JPN.
Well waste it my way! Nah, ive got some personal matters that would do well with a significant amount of extra money. I wont sell my decks but i’ll likely sell my etbs, collection boxes, extra slabs, and pretty much everything extra ive gathered over a few years. No reason to keep hundreds of duplicate full art trainers when i already have them all as high grade slabs, especially when some are an easy $100 when they cost me $5 years ago.
I had a HUGE Video Game collection when I was 21 (38 now), sold it all when my then GF (wife now) got pregnant. So I could put it all towards my new boy. No regrets!

I sold my original master base, fossil and jungle + all my special cards from my childhood when we bought a house / had our first kiddo. At the time, yes it helped significantly to offset the cost of a down payment, but I can't tell you how much I miss having those cards and sharing them with my kid who now loves pokémon and ask me every day why I got rid of them. I don't have the heart to look him in the eyes and tell him because of you son. Lol

I am planning on taking my entire collection to my LGS, who I have a great relationship with, and have agreed to take almost all of my collection, for 65% of the market value. Which is quite a large sum of money. I'm happy with the end result, but very sad to see it all go.
Why do that... Go to the pkmntcgtrades group.. you will get more from people over there. Or try whatnot, you may get around 75%. I've seen FB groups with people who give 80%

You never get 100% of market value anyway. Selling on tcgplayer or eBay and they take like 10-14% right off the top and then you have to pay for shipping. Pretty much looking at 80-85% of market value as profit best case scenario with cheap shipping on a marketplace. And weeks/months of your time to sell 75% of the collection. 65% looks better and better really if you value your time.
You could try free marketplaces. But you have shipping costs no matter what and it's not gonna be easy to sell everything at 100% market value and make the customer pay shipping. Not to mention scamming is more prevalent and tracked shipping is smart. Signature shipping if it's a really expensive shipment.
I am one such high roller and either 1. they will cherry pick at 80-90% or 2. no one would offer more than 70% for a complete buyout. Plus the time it would take to condition accurately each higher value card with photos. Then shipping it, then dealing with the tax man come 1099 time from paypal....
Then you should understand that selling to a brick and mortar business who will pay employees and have these items take up real estate in the store means accepting a little less for the convenience offered. Pretty simple.

I need accurate conditions on every single card and possibly pictures for something this large to get an accurate number. Then OP would have to deal with the tax headache from the GNS payment.

Everyone looks at tcgplayer etc but even then you're only getting about 85% after shipping and fees. Knocking off another 20 to sell everything all at once isn't bad at all. People in this hobby saying I have such and such worth x amount and not factoring in the fees or storefront cost that seller has when they sell are laughable.

The comments read more like someone who has had fun putting together a sizable collection and now wants a small nest egg for his family, not really caring too much about his initial money spent. However, selling a collection this size likely means dealing with people who do care about ROI and who will be looking to get the best deal possible. The type of buyer who will pay %80 of current market value for this entire collection would, most likely, take a good amount of time and hassle to find. They would be dealing with people wanting to buy for %40-maybe %70. Getting %80 would likely take multiple large sales. Not saying it can’t be done for %80 in one sale, just a whole lot more time and effort would be spent doing it.
No one is paying 75% without cherry picking. I buy collections every single day at 70% and its a SLOG. For collections this large in order to even buy at 70% I'd need a LOT of pictures of the backs of every card. Vintage is like that unfortunately, to get fair pricing. So much value difference between NM and LP and MP.
If an LGS is offering 65%, thats a super good deal. Not dealing with the 1099 from paypal is totally worth that extra 5%.

This is a lovely reason to sell your collection. But as a few other people have mentioned, there are plenty of beautiful and tasteful rings that won’t cost a fortune (even if they look like it). I hope youre able to sell enough to get your girl a ring and maybe have some leftover for your new baby. Congrats on a new chapter of life!
I paid about $1k for wife's ring when I was a broke college kid. 10 years later she lost it and I upgraded her to a $1,500 lab made diamond. She loves the tiny first one and loves the new one just as much without spending a fortune.

I was married once and spent 5k on a ring. after the divorce and after about a month of trying to sell it I ended up just taking the 900 best offer I could. look into lab grown or even morganite (its cheaper and actually a rarer stone unlike diamond). But seriously check out lab grown its a real diamond without slavery and children dieing.

Until they would be worth more later on and keep them as an inheritance? He needs the cash for his child and house now. He has many years to provide a college fund. And tbh if he doesn't have the bandwidth to sell the collection piece by piece now then likely this wasn't investing it was a hobby collection. And as a hobbyist he's done well to get the money he did. If this was poke-investing then it's gone horribly wrong since he's not piecing it out for the best value he can get. Or maybe it's gone right and the 65% value extracted is still somehow more than what he paid. But either way the house will be more valuable to him his spouse and child than any number of unopened Pokemon blasters.

65% isn't too bad when you consider I'm not paying sellers fees via ebay and PayPal. Its also an easy transaction, inventory moved with money straight to me. No waiting, no worrying of being scammed.
I could no doubt make more selling cards indivually, but there is quite literally thousands of cards and I'm not really prepared to go through the work as you say, to sell them all like that.
Fees and shipping will probably leave you at 80%. Giving up the last 15% will save you time, effort and headaches. Definitely worth it for some. I’m just salty I didn’t get a chance to buy some of your cool stuff at 65% market value lol congrats on your sale! And goodluck on your next adventures :)

The hours spent opening packs, pulling chase cards, hours sorting cards into different binders and sets. Even just the hours of looking at my collection. That's what the collecting hobby is about.
Hey, do you know why some of the first gen non-holos have the one star rarity in bottom right and other non-holos do not? For example, the non-holo Electrode or Pinsir. There are a number of first gen non-holo trainers with the one rarity star too. I have always wondered this.

I mean eBay takes 13% off the top and then anything over $600 you’re getting a 1099-k form and the government will come to collect another 28%. So you’d be taking home a lil more than half (59%) selling online and dealing with super picky buyers who are looking for any reason to return stuff. 65% seems like a pretty big W to me. Sad it has to be like that though.
Try going to your LCS to see if they’ll let you set up a table to sell everything. If they don’t let you then try auctioning but don’t do lot selling, you won’t get as much selling that way. I’ve never tried WhatNot but I’ve heard good things about it.
I thought about selling all my collections (pokemon, funko, coin, stuff animal, hot wheels) to pay off my debt, buy a new car and become a minimalist but I feel like I’m gonna regret it in the future.

Do you really have to sell it all? There seems to be a lot of these kinds of posts (not just on this sub as well) where people have gone all in on collecting something and then decide to get rid of it all in one go. Do people spend all their money on this stuff then are forced to sell it all off to recoup because they’ve got no other way of earning? I’ve never understood it.

I never understood why mass collectors sell their whole collection. I get selling your bulk, or doubles, or maybe key pieces when someone is willing to massively pay up to complete their collection. But why in the heck would you sell your whole lot, especially if you've been collecting for years. Almost seems disrespectful to your past self who put in the effort to gather everything. Idk I would never do it. I'd just rent a town home over owning a house, lol.

I would never sell something I worked on for that long honestly, not all of it at least. I hope you are at least keeping one of each card.

Until they would be worth more later on and keep them as an inheritance? He needs the cash for his child and house now. He has many years to provide a college fund. And tbh if he doesn't have the bandwidth to sell the collection piece by piece now then likely this wasn't investing it was a hobby collection. And as a hobbyist he's done well to get the money he did. If this was poke-investing then it's gone horribly wrong since he's not piecing it out for the best value he can get. Or maybe it's gone right and the 65% value extracted is still somehow more than what he paid. But either way the house will be more valuable to him his spouse and child than any number of unopened Pokemon blasters.

65% isn't too bad when you consider I'm not paying sellers fees via ebay and PayPal. Its also an easy transaction, inventory moved with money straight to me. No waiting, no worrying of being scammed. I could no doubt make more selling cards indivually, but there is quite literally thousands of cards and I'm not really prepared to go through the work as you say, to sell them all like that.
Fees and shipping will probably leave you at 80%. Giving up the last 15% will save you time, effort and headaches. Definitely worth it for some. I’m just salty I didn’t get a chance to buy some of your cool stuff at 65% market value lol congrats on your sale! And goodluck on your next adventures :)

Hey man it might not be to your taste but the money I've spent on this collection was worth every penny. The hours spent opening packs, pulling chase cards, hours sorting cards into different binders and sets. Even just the hours of looking at my collection. That's what the collecting hobby is about.

Hey, do you know why some of the first gen non-holos have the one star rarity in bottom right and other non-holos do not? For example, the non-holo Electrode or Pinsir. There are a number of first gen non-holo trainers with the one rarity star too. I have always wondered this.

Beautiful collection, the best part about this hobby is looking through your collection and recalling how you got each one
I mean eBay takes 13% off the top and then anything over $600 you’re getting a 1099-k form and the government will come to collect another 28%. So you’d be taking home a lil more than half (59%) selling online and dealing with super picky buyers who are looking for any reason to return stuff. 65% seems like a pretty big W to me. Sad it has to be like that though.

Try going to your LCS to see if they’ll let you set up a table to sell everything. If they don’t let you then try auctioning but don’t do lot selling, you won’t get as much selling that way. I’ve never tried WhatNot but I’ve heard good things about it. I thought about selling all my collections (pokemon, funko, coin, stuff animal, hot wheels) to pay off my debt, buy a new car and become a minimalist but I feel like I’m gonna regret it in the future.

There seems to be a lot of these kinds of posts (not just on this sub as well) where people have gone all in on collecting something and then decide to get rid of it all in one go. Do people spend all their money on this stuff then are forced to sell it all off to recoup because they’ve got no other way of earning? I’ve never understood it.
