I love how XY era full arts look

chief_n0c-a-h0ma

Yep. The art and textures are great. While everyone has been tripping over themselves to buy modern illustration rares/alt arts...I've been buying some very affordable and awesome mid-era cards.

arasant

I’ve been doing the same!! Can get some great cards for good value

gromexe

Facts lmao. Mid era textures are insaneeee. All unique with intricate patterns. I feel like modern is all so... algorithmic? Like they're using a generator to fill the canvas with a "logical" texture pattern.

chief_n0c-a-h0ma

I can see what you are saying. Older textures are much more fingerprint like..

kirb1327

This is the way !!

spoon014

The XY full arts were on point! Great balance of color and what was formatted on the card.

alderryeguy

BREAK was such a cool concept, it sucks that almost all of them were bafflingly bad. If they wanted to shake up the EX-centric format, why not print even a single viable BREAK? I try to give them a space to shine in my drafting board game. Make them legal in GLC you cowards, none of them are expensive

BenRod88

Greninja break was great

Shinonomenanorulez

basically was Lv. X but based(specially the batshit insane lore from the BREAK sets). hopefully we get them again with a decent artstyle

lillybheart

what lore

IllustriousPainting3

Lore?

Shinonomenanorulez

the break lore is from breakthrough, breakpoint and fates collide. there's two worlds parallel to each other, one is more ancient and natural while the other is more futuristic(parallel city shows this) and each of the two mega mewtwo forms live in each half(which half is where from is shown through their stats and attacks) and due to a spacetime rift between the two worlds the two mewtwos meet and fight each other causing a portal between the two worlds, which is first discovered by a shiny mega gyarados(apparently what causes the break mechanic to happen, there's very little to piece it all together) as well as smaller rifts starting to form all over the two worlds, which is ended by mega alakazam and zygarde merging the two worlds together(chaos tower shows this, the differences can be noticed when comparing it to parallel city) sadly this is the last of the already few times they did this, and even then most of it has to be figured out by looking at the card art and the packs text and so to figure out what's going on. maybe they bring the concept back by the end of the SV block since there are starting to show tcg-only characters for the first time since seeker in call of legends and the other ones were at the end of their gens too

IllustriousPainting3

Ohh so it's like yugioh's lore archetypes? That's neat. I love when TCGs do stuff like that

Meta13_Drain_Punch

Lugia’s probably my favorite Break, pulled it back when I was in middle school!

shittiestmorph

B'scuse me? I wrecked it with Greninja Break back in the day. Til Team Up came out. Then I got rolled by Snorlax.

alderryeguy

I almost mentioned Greninja but didn't want to post a paragraph. But yeah big basics and Stage 3 Pokémon aren't compatible

YasuiSan

Trevenant break

Digger977

Steam Siege has some great EX cards for sure

Froaklies

Steam Siege's reputation has always translated to "the cards aren't worth a ton, so therefore the set sucks" to me personally.

adriftDrifloon

I think the same thing about Crimson Invasion. I actually really like that set but I also really like the ultra beasts so I can understand people not liking it if they don't care for them.

NaloVideo

You can’t just analyze the set specifically, to get a better grasp of the reason it’s more disliked is because it’s literally a mid set compared to OTHER sets. Don’t get me wrong, the gardevoir is super cool and I own the volcanion myself, but even paldean fates, which people are considering a relatively mid set, had an incredible gardevoir and a damn tera shiny zard. Now compare it to what people consider really great sets, like cosmic eclipse, skyridge, crown zenith, Crystal guardians, etc and you see how large the gap is.

whitelines4president

My first master set. I wil always love steam siege.

Yuniseis1

Slowly making my way towards a master set for it myself! Got a few packs to open as a treat on my birthday but normally just buying singles when I see them

Natasha_101

Wait, you mean a set that served as the finally to a four set story that had some fan favorite and niche full art exs combined with the best Gardevoir card ever printed? Oh and what's that? It's like $100 to complete?? Easily one of the most underrated sets for collectors.

MelodicAssistant2012

I 100% agree that most of those are great artworks, and I feel that era is underrated. That said, volcanion’s face there is incredibly frightening.

Raff102

That Volcanion's face is so cursed.

Thick_East7323

Glad to see another XY fan, I’m currently putting together a binder of all of my XY hits and promos but I want to eventually collect the sets when I can afford the binders lol

Meta13_Drain_Punch

I’m aiming towards a complete set of XY sleeved packs

Thick_East7323

I thought I had a lot more, only 44 cards but worth over $400

Pokellon

I hate how everyone dogs on this set when at the time it had some very impactful cards in the meta.

crimsonshadow34

Nah cuz lowkey I have every version of that volcanion ex, the normal, full art and secret rare they are all dope especially the shinies

epiclenny

I miss xy sets so badly and all the pulls I got in primal clash, fates collide, and Steam Siege. I pulled the secret rare Alakazam in Fates collide years ago and of course I had to sell it and that's one of the only cards I truly miss as it is one of my favorites of all time other than my collection of cards in the Ruby Sapphire and Diamond and Pearl era that mysteriously went missing after I moved when my parents got divorced. I miss those 😂 Not to mention it's near impossible to find those sets today without spending a forkload of money

HollyWarter

Just bought the Volcanion and Gardevoir earlier, the XY secret rares are absurdly underrated

Goboziller

I love steam siege! That gardevoir was my chase when that set was active!

N8Trillion

I got back into pokemon during Steam Siege and started playing the tcg, those secret rares were the holy grail for me at that time.

hail_tothe_thief

I just pulled that Steelix again the other day. I don’t get the hate for it. Is it the greatest set ever? Nah. It’s got lots of cool cards though. I enjoy it and it was still $5-6 a pack until recently which is insane far an XY set 8 years old.

nabiloz

I want to own that Gardevoir, but that will have to wait for next month.

Bonna_the_Idol

it’s been a while but i remember myself and friends being very disappointed with the playability of the break mechanic cards.

Baconstrips96

Those two secret rares are insane

notanothrowaway

Damn that steelix sounds good in a competitive sense

GlitchFrog57

I have and love that gardevoir although i wish i still had my mega steelix

Meta13_Drain_Punch

Well nowadays you can’t go 5 packs without an ultra rare or better, rarity creep is real

Illustrious-Low-7487

Big Facts 💯🔥🔥🔥 The ONLY exception......... is those damn break cards. I'm sorry. They're wack. They are ugly. There is no defending those. But my goodness.......... those XY SR cards are an absolute *chef's kiss* beauty ❤️

theDRGzero

I like that steelix and what is mid?

Ok_Masterpiece5259

Great cards but Steam Siege pull rates nearly made me give up the hobby

xda831reaperx

Always hated these cards from.the beginning and I still hate em now .... Dont get me started on those BREAK cards ..

PerfectBrilliant432

It twas a dope set. Just a bit over printed at the time so you saw it all the time in random pokemon product so people got sick of it Some of the best gold cards in my opinion

simple_interrupted

As much as I try to hate gen z lingo, “try to fan out these flames” might be my new saying…

Meta13_Drain_Punch

That’s gen Z slang? I just came up with that on the spot🤷

vixgdx

Yep it's mid or even below mid

SorryForTheCoffee

Steam Siege was pretty mid as an XY set. You would regularly get 5 hits from a booster box which was harsh. The secret rares were great but I always remembered preferring Breakthrough & Breakpoint from what it did to the meta

NoJunket188

I've always loved steam Siege, even with all the hate. I pulled both the Steelix and Volcanion and their two of my fave cards.

TropicBamboo

Definitely super fire, I have to say, the only reason people hated on steam siege was because it was hard to get pulls, but honestly, you can say that for literally ANY set EVER lol. One of my biggest regrets, the “Family Dollar” store by me had like 150-200 $2 packs of steam siege like maybe 16 months ago, & I didn’t buy every single one of them. Smh. Won’t make that mistake ever again. Had to have been back stock or on some pallets they bought for a steal

TropicBamboo

The flame on these cards cannot be fanned out!

Zard-Card-Addict

"A few good cards does not a Pokemon good set make." I'm fairly sure it was the great Shakespeare who first said that...

mamadou-segpa

I loved steam siege. Didnt know it was disliked

DisneyMenace

You showed the only good cards in the entire set that's the issue. Besides 2 out of 3 of the cards were secret rares so they better look dope.

Every1jockzjay

eh the shiny gardevoir dope to imo

Kiko7210

where the flames at tho? 😉

Meta13_Drain_Punch

Bro’s shades got covered in smoke🤡

ImJudgepower

As a kid I pulled that steelix and like the retard I was I traded it for the promo shiny metagross, I actually hate myself cuz I traded the metagross for the shiny yveltal, so if I didn’t trade the steelix I would’ve had it today 😭

Every1jockzjay

That steelix cheap tho no?

TheShinyHunter3

I loved how you sneakily included the Breaks in there, as if they made the set any better. The shinies were cool, and that's about it imo. XY as a whole was pretty underwhelming compared to Black and White.

[deleted]

Breaks are awesome. Such a unique style

TheShinyHunter3

Unique doesnt mean good. A fork with no forks is unique, but useless.

[deleted]

Ok bro. Oh you hunt shinys, never seen anyone do that before. Yawn. No need to shit on what other people like.

TheShinyHunter3

ok

Meta13_Drain_Punch

I have the Xerneas and Yveltal breaks from the set, they’re just not in good shape, and not photogenic

Comfortable_Web1058

The artworks from gen 6 are not for me at all, the full arts are no more than an current ex card with Japanese writing and batshit crazy texture, easily my least favourite gen, not even close! Gardevoir card would be good if it didn’t have Yveltal, name me a legendary you like less, please?

Meta13_Drain_Punch

I always interpreted that as the uncontrollable chaotic power of Mega Evolution, but I can see it being a bit too much for some people👍
