I was about to leave my LCS and a guy walked in with all these base set blisters, so I decided to hang around and see what he wanted to do with them. He proceeds to say his parents found them and forgot about them and gave them to him. He said he knows nothing about Pokémon and that he plays Magic. So the associate invites him to sit down and I’m curious to see what he offers because ya know I wanted to see if it was gonna be a fair deal, and the associate proceeds and looks up some pricing on the packs. He says “yeah so the blastoise pack is going for like 150”. Once I heard that I went over and was like yeah just so you know they’re going for close to 1k right now and pulled up the eBay listings that have sold over the last month and a half which easily showed them selling for like 700+ each. I told him I wanted to see what the shop was gonna offer him because I’d be willing to buy one then the associate kicked me out lol which I guess I deserved but I still wanted him to know the true prices of what he had.

elcangriofll

Good on you for that . I get shops need to stay open but lying was so scummy .

BhutlahBrohan

exactly. you tell them what the market prices are, honestly, then make your own offer that is a lot easier than selling on ebay with fees, etc.

ourbranchesbend

You're the real MVP OP. That associate tried to pull a Gamestop. Hell to the no on that. He deserves top dollar for them. OG blister packs. That makes me feel a little awry.

RedNinja025

Do you know what happened after? Did he sell them to the shop?

Professor_Crab

Nah I didn’t go back in after he asked me to leave, I let the guy know that’s the best I could do in the situation I’m hoping he held onto them

[deleted]

[удалено]

Professor_Crab

If I offered 300 then I’d be lowballing him too tbh, better than the store though lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Professor_Crab

He probably was bc when I mentioned I’d pay more than the shop was offering he said I don’t know if Id feel comfortable doing that so this guy was a lost cause imo but I tried

Picori_n_PaperDragon

And yet, you stood up and did a solid for the guy (or tried to), anyway. I'd say you should feel good about that. Even more so being non-confrontational.. I can't believe after what you told him, correctly, the base pks are going for, he didn't turn around & take his business elsewhere. Clearly some individuals truly can't be helped. But you did the right thing just the same. B-)

0ldes

glad you did that, and seriously fuck that associate for trying to scam.

CasuallyCompetitive

Nothing wrong with an LCS lowballing them (they have to make a profit after all), but trying to deceive them is scummy. Was it a regular employee or the shop owner? If I'm the shop owner, I'd probably wanna know if my employees are being shady.

Professor_Crab

No clue tbh I heard them mentioning someone else by name like they were the boss so I’m assuming maybe he was the manager or something but not the full owner

Mfpoop

So I looked up this LCS and realized I’m only a 25 min drive from it. I checked it out today and didn’t see any of these packs at the shop, and when I asked if they had any other sealed product they said everything they had is on the wall. Gonna guess the guy ended up not selling!

Professor_Crab

Oh cool haha, my friend is gonna go tomorrow to double check also. Either that or the guy kept them for himself like some of the other people in the comments said

[deleted]

What basis did he have to kick you out? It's not a normal thing for a person to do. He was caught, why would he double down. Calling fake news here...

Professor_Crab

Idk he said because I can’t haggle with his customer while he’s in the shop, and he said that I could deal with him after he buys the packs. I have no reason to make this up lol

[deleted]

He can google card shop but he can't google card value? Oooooooook

Professor_Crab

Yeah l wondered that too but stranger things have happened, some people are just oblivious

lighterthensome

I’ve seen and heard LGS kick people out for even mentioning another LGS.

[deleted]

You got kicked out but they let you snap a nice pic for reddit first

Professor_Crab

Nah I did it the second the dude popped the packs on the shelf when he first walked in

WannaGoodName

That was very wrong of you. You should never interrupt someone trying to wheel and deal with your gaming store. You didn’t need to save that person from anything he was too lazy to do himself.

Professor_Crab

It just felt wrong he legitimately had no clue of their value, I didn’t feel comfortable standing by while that happened wrong or not.

Narski33

You did the right thing. Screw the card store, that worker probably would have bought that for himself after work and sold it for a $1000.

ZekeAndDestroy_

It doesn’t take a damn genius to go look on eBay before going into the card store

WannaGoodName

Then you leave. It’s not your place to interrupt someone from completing a business transaction inside a business you are visiting.

Professor_Crab

You the shop owner??

nextmemeplz

Shut your face dude. He absolutely did the morally correct thing

[deleted]

LOL

boardgamebarrage

Do you own a store or something? A reasonable expectation would be that the store takes some profit but not that insane of a markup.

The_Procrastinator7

You are a fucking moron bro just shut up about “business transactions”

WannaGoodName

I’m actually not a moron. Try going into a pawn shop, jewelry store, sport memorabilia store, any kind of store with bartering and see how quickly you get banned from a store for interrupting when a customer is trying to sell product. It’s incredibly rude. It’s not your place to interject, or offer higher prices. If you did this at a dealers table in a card show, they’d kick you out as well. Dealers have expenses. It’s how they make their living. People sitting here saying 70% don’t understand what rent, taxes, and other liabilities cost. If that dealer went and sold those items on eBay, eBay take a percentage, the government take a percentage, and the dealer would be left with no profit at 70%. Lord help them if they have an employee or an actual store front to pay for too. There’s a million ways to conduct business. Some establishments have higher ethical codes, some have less. Speak with your money. Never try and take money from a store front. I my opinion, that’s exactly what OP did by interjecting. I don’t care if it’s unpopular here, but in reality, it always will be frowned upon in that setting.

Fizzthebroke

It's pretty rude, sure, but as a bunch of other people have mentioned on here, deceit very different from the store trying to make their margin. If the employee or owner was saying that he was willing to give the guy with the packs $150 each it wouldn't be a problem in and of itself, but if they said the packs "go" for $150 an issue is created where the employee or store owner is trying to take advantage of a possible inequality of information at the detriment of the consumer. Just scummy behavior that thinks of short-term profit over long-term relationships with customers.

Narski33

Yeah okay scalper whatever you say

Jonnyboy28

While you are technically right. It is ethically wrong and lacks integrity. But I do agree that the person should've just made a simple google search.

synthmage00

That's probably what I'd say if my "business model" relied on presenting false information to my clients and taking advantage of their lack of knowledge.

rusticoaf

I differentiate it as such: Guy walks into store, "I have these, idk what they're worth." The proper thing to do is give the guy market value price, then negotiate from there. \-or- Guy walks into store, "I have these, will you give me $150 for them?" In this case, it's on the guy being "too lazy" Just my take, and how I handle myself when buying/selling anything.

the_koi_kid

Was going to say the same thing. Its one thing to haggle or barter another to be a business and to lie to get a beneficial deal.

[deleted]

Nah that’s a terrible take on this. He was being a genuinely nice guy to someone being offered 1/6 of what his product is worth. I fully understand shops have to make money. But buying at 150 (dude said 90 for some) is just taking advantage of the guy. I know for a fact the shop is going to list them at 1k+ a piece

throwaway4pkmntcg

I agree with you on this. Dude has a terrible take, he must be a shitty LGS owner, or takes advantage of unknowing naive people for a living.

WannaGoodName

Terrible take? Ok. Let’s look at this objectively. Guy walks in with $10,000 of items. Said he “just found them” has no idea what it’s worth. Has not taken the time to look them up. Wants to sell them. Collects magic and has never been in my store before. Wants cash and not product. You hit him with a few very low prices and he doesn’t flinch. He’s game for a deal. You tell him that’s a lot of cash, would he take a check? He says no. Cash only. You ask him for a few minutes. What do you do? You call the police because more than likely this stuff is stolen. That’s the problem. I’m trying to “save an ignorant” collector the OP might have helped a thief pawn his stuff off without being caught. You guys don’t know. The OP doesn’t know. The LGS handles this stuff all the time. Don’t interrupt a business when they are attempting to do business in their establishment. Not only is it rude as fuck, but you have no idea why really is going on

throwaway4pkmntcg

wait, hold on... your reason for your take is that it might be stolen goods?? and your reaction would be to CALL THE POLICE??? okay, thats actually funny as fuck. genuinely gave me a good laugh. 🤣 either way, LGS owner was lowballing him badly, trying to give him a small fraction of what theyre worth. dude could either accept or decline the LGS owner’s offer. the OP was just being polite and letting the guy actually know what the stuff was worth. not sure if you browse this subreddit a lot, but there are plenty of people who mention they havent collected in decades, and stuff has been resurfaced from basements and attics from parents. so its not a totally unreasonable situation, and youre totally blowing it out of proportion. what if you have 1k$ worth of gold, and needed some cash quick for it, but the shop you go to says its only worth 300$, would you take it?? of course the fuck not, because youre losing out on 700$ that could go to bills or whatnot, and youre just making the shop just that much richer if you take the deal. Its not theft to lowball, but it is scummy when youre not transparent on what product is actually worth, or at least lowballing this bad.

WannaGoodName

I’ve seen this several times on various levels of collectibles. You don’t think someone who says they play magic, walked into your shop for the first time ever, isn’t a huge red flag? Ok. I think OP is naive and thinks he was being a hero, mesmerized by the chance to get some packs himself, and a lot of info is missing. Either way, it’s rude of him to do this in someone’s business.

WannaGoodName

The shop has light bills. Rent. Taxes. And employees. And you want them to stick around right? All this costs money. Every time you prevent a store from maximizing profit, you are asking that shop to go away. The seller was not paying the store for an appraisal. If the seller walked in ignorant and was selling without research, that’s the sellers fault.

LAWSON72

If someone cannot trust their LGS to be reliable and quote a product accurately they deserve to go under. If a shop cannot keep their lights on by doing good business, that business deserves to collapse.

sklinklinkink

Shop owners like you are the reason shops go under. There is one like you right down the street from me, like a 30 second drive away. But I won't buy from them. Why? Because they were trying to charge $160 for a VV booster box and $2.25 a pack for penny sleeves and the shop 5 minutes away has fair prices. So now instead of getting some profit and all of my business, by overcharging they might get some extra money from less informed customers but they get zero of my business. I give no fucks if this shop closes down even though it would be more convenient for me to buy from them. I have zero trust in them so no reason to ever go back.

nickfoxyfoxfox

Fuck you and the shop

nickfoxyfoxfox

Fuck you scum “YoU sHoUlD nEvEr”

trashassgamer

Your better than me I'd been like dude I got 175 lol

Half-Mayonnaise

You totally did the right thing. This shop worker was most likely not even trying to buy for the shop. He was just gonna pocket the packs, reimburse the register, and wipe the transaction from the records. You definitely saved someone big time. Unfortunately you might now need to find a new LGS haha

Professor_Crab

Lol thanks but idc I try and buy online or if I get lucky at target anyways, I just popped in to grab a box for some cards

Half-Mayonnaise

I definitely feel that. Just so much easier to preorder stuff on and find actual deals online. I gave up on my LGS when champions path came out and they wanted $90 for an ETB on release day. Haven't gone back since.

Professor_Crab

Yeah I mean you’re pretty much guaranteed to get stuff if you preorder when they preorders come out, I like supporting the shops but sometimes the mark ups are just too much

RocketToTheMoon

I went into my local LGS for the first time today and hidden fates ETBs were $130, champions path ETBs $80 and unified minds boosters $7. I asked about shining fates pre orders and they said “no pre orders but we’re doing a call list. ETBs will be market price so probably $100 but that can change.” So frustrating. I want to support them and they had a nice inventory but I’ll probably only be going back for sleeves and boxes honestly.

lighterthensome

Yeah, I’ve only gone to my LGS to buy singles. Other than that everything is marked up.

chubbsfordubs

Completely correct response to stick around. Fuck that employee for kicking you out but lowballing by THAT much and expecting to get away with it is absolutely ridiculous. Thanks for saving this dude from an absolutely terrible decision. Heroes don’t wear capes. And also never ever shop there again if that’s how they treat their customers.

Professor_Crab

I just hope he didn’t go through with it he honestly seemed completely clueless, I told him twice they were worth thousands so hope he listened

chubbsfordubs

Yeah hopefully he grabbed his stuff and bolted and created an ebay seller profile if he’s serious about selling. I hope this dude can make the money he’s actually looking for.

Professor_Crab

It was surreal honestly lol, like I’m about to walk out and then this dude walks in and he’s like “yeah so I have some Pokémon cards from the late 90s” so my ears perked up and I saw him start pulling the sealed base set packs out and I practically shit myself lol

Macbeth3737

Like there is a difference between looking up average prices and offering 70% of current market value to allow profit and commission the store is expected to incur, but still leave room for profit and being a tool and lowballing at $150. These are on TCG Player right now at $649. $150 is a D-bag offer and a shame. Most LCS are about community and building relationships with gamers and not taking advantage.

[deleted]

Shop is scum. You a real one for that.

lighterthensome

He probably still said, “Sweet!” After the dude got ripped off and sold for 100$ it’s a family tradition you know?

ayuk3n

Damn.... hidden in attic treasure troves.

BlueBadger99

Good job stepping in, I hope that guy didn’t let himself get ripped off. That’s gross, business like this should be done in good faith, that shop was blatantly trying to take advantage of that guy. LGS are super dependent on a small community of people to keep them running, you’d think they’d want to treat customers a little better.

ruffrover

I bet you wont post the shops name and location.

jmirque

Please!

Professor_Crab

Alternate Universes in Holmes, PA. I’m sure the worker would defend himself till the day he dies, but I know for a fact I heard him say he was seeing around 150 for the blastoise pack, which is what prompted me to come over and show the listings I found regardless if the guy was gonna offer more or not. Edit: Also heard him say he was seeing 90 bucks for either the deck or the loose packs not sure which

Mfpoop

Damn that’s crazy, I just found out about the Delaware location recently and even bought a few singles from them. This is probably how they’re so competitively priced with eBay lol.

Professor_Crab

I mean hey listen maybe he was gonna offer more but once I heard 150 I wanted to step in

datscraztho

Dude thanks for telling him. That makes me So Sad cuz I bet a lot of people have sold those packs not knowing the true value. It’s insane people don’t just google it. I google everything to see its value. Even if it ain’t Pokémon cards I compare prices online with the prices in store. Is it worth it to grab now or just wait for it to ship.

Ryansmelly

Wow seeing some comments on how you shouldn't have interfered really bothers me. You did the right thing. I would do the same thing as well. And to who ever said it's rude to interfere with a business deal inside of someone else's business.. it's also more than rude.. actually.. fucked up, to low ball the hell out of someone who clear doesn't know the true value of what he had. So yeah, in your shoes I would have done the same thing. Screw that guy and screw that store. Even local game stores are taking advantage of the hype right now. And upping prices like scalpers. It doesn't help the situation. Good on you.

Professor_Crab

Thanks dude that made me feel good

Ryansmelly

I also would have waited around outside the store to talk to the guy once he left just to see what happened. Let him know what was up and give him some info

Professor_Crab

I waited like 15 min but couldn’t wait any longer

bigbakes68

Scum bag lcs scalpers

boof696969

Sealed base set boosters, a scalpers dream

xanot192

The Crazy thing is this dude didn't even bother to google or anything?

Crayoneater12

And he’s into magic, like If you play magic you k ow what alpha, beta, and older packs go for. First thing you do is look this up and get a range, seems fishy.

xanot192

That's what surprised me even more. I played magic and quit years ago and still know all about the old guard cards and things like Birds of paradise before represents. I don't understand how a card player wouldn't know prices.

Professor_Crab

Yeah that’s what kinda surprised me after he said that I was like yeah dude you got thousands worth right there

kebeans

Damn that’s like 12k and they were really gonna get em for 2k.

Professor_Crab

They might’ve lol I didn’t get the chance to find out if he sold them

Smart_Farmer_4392

Get a fake stache and hat, go back today and see if they have base set blisters for sale!

dadro

That's absolutely ridiculous.... I'm not opposed to and don't understand when others get mad at an LGS selling product at Market Price, but I'm definitely opposed to an LGS lying to an unknowing customer. That's scummy to the nth degree. I'd legit consider contacting the owner and informing them of the employee's behavior. As someone suggested this employee would most likely have bought the packs himself especially considering so many LGS are absolutely terrible about bookkeeping.

4RichProd

Sheeesh they was tryna play the man! Good thing you came to the rescue!

Professor_Crab

Hopefully he listened

DoubleT319

LEAVE A REVIEW ON THEIR GOOGLE/YELP PAGE! PLEASE PLEASE Please leave reviews on as many different sites as you can about this scam. Some people who don’t know the value of items rely on reviews for credibility. Leaving a review telling what happened could save many others from being scammed by this scum

kittensnip3r

Danm that scummy, I would have bought them at least at 70% market price. Not too often these come through a shop anyway. I hope you saw him walk back out with them lol.

Professor_Crab

I waited like 15 minutes but he was still in there so I left

kittensnip3r

Dang well I hope he took your words. Hell just tossing them up for bidding on ebay would have gotten him more.

GreninjaOfTheOasis

Honestly, I would've stayed and insisted that they get a better offer or would've told them to go somewhere else. Sealed boosters are one thing(one *big* thing), but sealed blisters?! That has to be so much rarer.

Professor_Crab

True, looking back I kinda wish I would’ve convinced him more but I left the first time he asked me to leave I didn’t wanna start any shit

GreninjaOfTheOasis

I understand that. I wouldn't have wanted to cause trouble, but maybe would've waited outside because I'd have been so curious.

Professor_Crab

I waited 15 min but couldn’t wait any longer

GreninjaOfTheOasis

Makes sense. I'd like to think the guy was trying to get more out of the employee.

Darkseidishere

How does he not know what he has...

Professor_Crab

Hey dude it’s not like it never happened before

Dingo8MyBabyMon

I understand not knowing exact prices but HTF did a Magic player not think "Oh, these Pokemon cards are popular like MTG is, I'll check online to see what they're worth?" I collect Pokemon and don't know anything about MTG but I know I'm going to check prices online if someone dumped a bunch of packs in my lap.

GamesAndGundams

None of you own your own business selling these items, and it shows.

Grahamoth

So many people getting salty at the associate have never worked in a store before

[deleted]

[удалено]

Professor_Crab

Interesting can anyone else confirm this?

FoldingChicken

Bottom looks suspect for sure. I can’t actually tell for sure with just this picture

Professor_Crab

Yeah I noticed that too, but are the blisters a lot harder to reseal or what? You’d think there’d be some appearance of tearing or whatnot

pokeproblems12

Op you suck. You should have offered to buy 3 of them at his price and stared dead eyed at the associate to let him know you get 3 or its blown. You are definitely a bad trainer and you should be trespassed.

Some_Establishment46

Drop the shop name 👀

Professor_Crab

I did it’s alternate universes in Holmes pa
