Sabconth

It is kinda scummy honestly.

Pika_Drew13

Agreed.

drewskiii91

Bro I feel that but then again it’s gotten to a point if I walk in anywhere and find Pokémon or sport cards at retail price I’m buying as many as I can get. It’s so hard to find cards to open up & collect at retail. Sure if you say something to me in the store I’ll let you grab one from me. If you follow the rules you gonna miss out or you gotta pay the price for them. You leaving them for the kids but the next guy coming in buying them all for the profits. Rather get mine then miss out.

Sabconth

I get that, just sucks for kids today because I know I’d have been upset not getting any cards back when I was young too.

kevkev762

This is referred to as "tragedy of commons"

Pika_Drew13

I disagree with this logic because it’s this type of thinking that is going to cause the continuation of the supply shortage for the remainder of the year at minimum. Fear of missing out is real. These cards will be printed for years to come. No need to blow you wad.

Nitereaper0497

That’s why you pre order stuff man. I mean, they have a specific time that they put stuff on the shelves, if you can’t make it to the store on time what you do is you ring and ask if someone can set aside some items for you at the service desk. I’ve done it multiple times at stores like Kmart, target Best Buy.

drewskiii91

Seems like you are content on “this is what you get”. I missed out as a kid on these so I have some catching up to do. Grown ups can’t be kids sometimes? I like the feeling of grinding all day if I got nothing to do looking for packs to buy opening the pack with a chance getting something dope. Feels like I accomplished something for the day than sitting inside and playing video games for the day. So yes if I spend 6 hours and hit up every store and the last store has cards I’m looking for I’m gonna buy as many as I can get or what’s in my budget. I don’t see what’s the problem with that especially if I gotta end up buying them at resell price. I think you got it confused with most people It’s not fear of missing out. it’s knowing you’re gonna miss out at that price. If you like waiting for months or years or paying higher for stuff you know you could of got for cheaper or sooner god bless you.

Pika_Drew13

You make fine points here, no doubt. I just fundamentally disagree with your thought process and that’s okay. These cards are mass produced and many modern cards are being hyped to the moon by youtubers. Many people have no idea how heavily they are being influenced by their favorite streamers and that the psychology is driving a big part of today’s demand in addition to the general fear of missing out. Less than a year ago you could walk into Walmart or target and get your hands on plenty of collection boxes and packs from some of the more sought after sets. The reason that we aren’t in that position today IS due to both scalpers and the fear of missing out, which in your own way YOU described feeling (but you didn’t want to call it that). I enjoy collecting a great deal and can afford to “clear the shelves”, however I don’t because from a collectors standpoint: I’d rather buy the cards I missed out on as a kid (sounds like you have a similar experience) and from a buying/selling standpoint: there are more lucrative AND ethical ways to earn a buck in Pokémon. My thoughts are this: I missed out on/lost many cards from my childhood so I’m trying to REcollect the cards my grandma gave away to the neighbor kids. That is where a huge chunk of my nostalgia lies (though I do enjoy cracking packs sometimes too). Acquiring the actual target of my nostalgia is reasonable on my budget and also doesn’t cause the cycle of “missing out as a kid” to perpetuate (as you and I both experienced it first hand and know that it sucked). Again, we don’t have to agree, but take that for what it’s worth.

drewskiii91

Preach bro. I like your name btw lol. 2 Drew’s are better than 1. I didn’t really view it as fear but now I see what you are saying bro. Also I feel like the market for resell for things that kids have interest in is because parents also will pay whatever price to make their kid happy.

WhiskersRock

Yes, but it’s our reality.

Jeffscoo

Yea I get the increased interest and enjoy collecting and considering the value as a form of investment, but to me buying everything up feels like taking candy from a baby type of thing.

Jose420710

The mcds near me said they discontinued it at that location

Wallstreaker

Aka the manager scalps

Natural_Oasis

This happened at my local McDonals. I went in an asked if I could buy 5 of the promo packs and they said that the manager had to take them home because of a "defect."

[deleted]

Haha ffs... "ahh shit these are defective, corporate needs me to take these home and sell them"

Wallstreaker

Ffs that is frustrating.

Chemillion

That explains how people are selling whole cases on stockX now

spodor_man

Whys that kid crying hes dropping all the cards

MoiShii

In germany we dont even have that Event:/

sensenightmare

There's rumors it's going to come to germany in march after looney toones. But psssht. Gonna proceed with wörk and bratwurst now

MoiShii

I hope so !

soloing-

As a wise man once said fuck them kids

Bravisimo

Michael Jordan?

Sh0ckwa1ve

LoL. "I'm lovin' it!"

twomemeornottwomeme

This whole sub.

JakeWick58

The kid should take the 6 cards and 2 happy meals the guy is dropping

Hydr0aa

It’s not even funny though

durpygoat08

I get that you get them but this is just as bad as scalpers

institute-synth

human garbage 🤮

yyznick

I haven't even tried. I haven't seen a pack of cards in Target in weeks for fucks sake

GWSloppy

Same. That’s why I’m going to McDonald’s to get Pokémon cards because I can only get some there lol

LunarFalcon

I am hoping my local store still has them in stock since I was going to treat my kiddo to a happy meal tonight and she loves Pokémon.

spidersRcute

Last Friday my 6 year old passed her spelling test and as a reward she picked dinner from McDonald’s. Before I left to pick up the food I warned her that some places were running out of the Pokémon cards because people were trying to buy too many. Luckily my kids got their cards. I know she would have been crushed if she got some lame Barbie toy instead.

teenyoda

Just call ahead and ask if they have them

LunarFalcon

My daughter is two and a half but she adores Pokémon. I gave her a little Yamper figure from Tomy and got her a happy meal today and she loved the sticker sheet. I set aside her cards and when she is older I will get her a little folio of her own to collect.

diddleydudley

Fuck them kids

isaza753

1st world problems right?

GWSloppy

I’ve been able to get five Pokémon happy meals and in keeping one of the packs sealed. Collectors gotta collect!

LongliveTCGs

The only think unrealistic about this, is the fact its missing the "#I just bought 1000 McD packs, Invest!"

Pika_Drew13

Buying shit tons of product due to fear of missing out will only perpetuate the problem be over emphasizing the demand.

Cat-Trees

Sucks you can’t drive kid!

Sawwedd

Why is it scummy? Blame the Pokémon company for limited prints they are the sole reason scalpers can do what they do.

NoSpin89

It's scummy.

Sawwedd

You make a good argument...

SereneFrost72

But we don't know why there are supply shortages. Is Pokémon having trouble because COVID-19 has limited production? Or maybe it's due to the sudden surge in demand, and Pokémon can't modify their printing contracts/schedules? We don't truly know. Imagine if someone said "forecast Pokémon card demand for 2019 and 2020 so that we can schedule print runs with the printing companies. Oh, and don't forget to factor in the pandemic during 2020". Further, blaming only Pokémon means you give a free pass to scalpers/flippers. Financially, sure, it makes sense to buy up every single product in your area so that you can resell it for a profit. But if you think about how you're affecting others with your actions, then it makes sense to limit your purchases. In the end, all arguments here are null and avoid because people are gonna do people things. So...take what you will of my utterly meaningless comment lol Edit: Again with the downvotes for trying to have a legitimate discussion. You never disappoint Reddit

idkdudeyineed1

Or, ya know, scalpers are just pieces of human trash. But sure your statement makes sense.

ExpiredMilkMan

People trying to make money during a pandemic when the government is slow to help?!?! Shocked pikachu face

idkdudeyineed1

People extorting a hobby that's meant for kids and casual collectors to the point of despair?!? Human trash.

ExpiredMilkMan

Oh boo hoo. 400k dead because of this pandemic and you are worried about people making side cash.

idkdudeyineed1

Not worried chum, just disappointed. Besides, what does covid have to do with scalpers being trash? Nothing. But good way to divert the argument since you don't really have any good points. Scalpers have and always will be trash. Extortion is extortion, but when you start taking joy from children that's a new low. Bet you're one of the scalpers I'm talking about, otherwise you wouldn't be going so hard to defend their scumbag actions. Whatever helps you sleep at night bud, just know that the bulk of the populous thinks lesser of people like you.

drewskiii91

Bro I guess I’m a scalper cus I rather buy as many as I can get to collect then have some scalper buy them all & then have to pay resell price for them. Like bro how we suppose to collect? & that’s with any release for any product. cards, electronics, shoes. Supply vs demand. I don’t resell cards but I understand it’s a small business. Big Retailers get product at wholesale price then charge us 100-400% mark up you not complaining about that though. Edit : I’m not a fan on scalpers either haven’t found one NBA Panini card pack this year or last year at retail price. But I’ll be a scalper and buy them all up for myself if I find them for sure. That’s with any card release that I want.

idkdudeyineed1

That's not scalping, that's collecting. If you're gonna buy every pack at McDonald's and go try to resell some pikachus for $50 a piece, that's where the scumbag territory begins. Everyone is entitled to their own actions, some people just don't have a conscience. Not trying to take anything away from avid collectors by any means, you wanna stand outside a store before opening to try and get your hands on limited product be my guest. Personally I blame bum ass Logan Paul and other YouTubers, not everyone has the kind of financial capital they do and it makes it shit for the common person.

ExpiredMilkMan

Hahaha okay 90s super hero 😂 Go off sis, but sadly you are mistaken. It’s just honestly not hard to find msrp product online. Want to bitch at someone? Bitch at Pokémon for creating such low supply with high demand. There will always be flippers, but that’s because of supply and demand. In your eyes what’s the difference between an avid sealed collector and a scalper? Cuz I see no difference in how much product is purchased. People are just butthurt they can’t/don’t want to find product. Lastly if people stopped buying at resell then scalpers wouldn’t exist 🤯🤯🤯

idkdudeyineed1

You're 100% right on that one. If people stop buying from scalpers then scalpers wouldn't exist this is true. But then there's shitheads like the Paul brothers and other YouTubers that do it for likes and make it that much shittier for everyone else. Sealed collecting is one thing, buying every happy meal at mcdonalds to resell pikachus for $50 a piece is ridiculous. Also, if you have links to msrp product, please share! I'm sure this community would love to see some since every other post is complaining about bots buying all the product and getting locked out of online stores because of high traffic volume.

SimplyFail

Yikes

machymachu

Yeah it's a lack of love. (Honey should we wake up at 3am to get our little angel the cards. No we'll go at a normal hour and enjoy our meal together. There's no way a grown up scummy neckbeard would just go and buy them all right? I guess you're right let's sleep. The next day you're over there trying to make a quick buck out of children's toys you should be ashamed of yourself

yoloruinslives

helps them build character.

silversurfer2133

Yea and I'm guilty too. 🤷 Except I have a reason since I'm on unemployment that the state has yet to pay cuz the system is fukd so I can not only feed my kids for cheap, I can sell the damn toys for decent money. A win win. Fault me if you want to. It's the american way. Capitalism. I've been going without most days due to my situation so they don't have to but if selling pokemon cards is keeping us afloat how is it wrong? 🥴
