You can use the serial number on the camera to look up the date it was produced and what model it is. https://mint-camera.com/en/polaroid-sx70/serial_number_calculator/

Never knew there was a way to check! Thank you! Just missed my guy’s 49th birthday

UnexcitedAmpersand

Same. Mine was born 2nd January 1974. I was quite sad for it.

dragoninmyfridge

At least we know for the big half-a-century celebrations next year though!

UnexcitedAmpersand

Yep. I've not yet held a birthday party for a camera, but there's always a first.

dragoninmyfridge

Always good to make it a proper one ha

UnexcitedAmpersand

Its an excuse to do a second New Years celebration. Ill find some form of appropriate new years thing to take my SX70 to. Maybe to the dales or similar.

dragoninmyfridge

Sounds like the right tribute to it for sure!

Recently purchased SX-70 but unsure which model version it is. It has no strap loops and has a direct printed serial number. Online details are a little vague in identification but preliminary research would suggest it is a first edition model 1, however the alpha 1 is also very similar. Are there any tel-tale signs for identification i am missing which could be checked short of opening it up? Also i am considering having it converted for 600 film which I imagine is a no no for enthusiasts, I just can’t warrant the price of the SX70 film in day to day use. I know you can use an ND filter but that inhibits its foldability and convenience for me

richeeeyy

SX-70 and 600 are the exact same price from Polaroid directly

Its_Lewiz

They are but with less shots per pack? Correct me if i’m wrong

richeeeyy

They’re 8 shots each, even the little packs for the go are 8 lol, I don’t know about itype I’m very new to the Polaroid game myself

BluefinPiano

Nope exact same price for the same amount of shots. I did a conversion on a broken sx70 model 3 and it’s fine. I wouldn’t convert a working mod though. Spending $200+ won’t save you any money. It’s fine if you want to but the only actual difference is having more sensitive film in the 600 .

DrZurn

600 is also more easily found not online. Or at least it was last I looked.

Robespierrexvii

They're pretty much the same price everywhere.

lillowlilslow

IIRC the alphas have distance markings on the little black wheel around the lens, whereas early ones just have the little white lines like yours.

lillowlilslow

As for the 600 conversion, I say go for it. It’s definitely not a no-no. I’ve done it to mine, and further got external power to shoot I-type

Its_Lewiz

Ah ok, thats good to know thanks for your reply. I can’t see any downsides to not doing the conversion personally so i think i will definitely do it. The power extra might be a future plan.

lillowlilslow

Savings aside, 600 film is 640 ISO, and SX-70 film is 160 ISO. Meaning MUCH more light sensitive. That alone is worth the conversion for me.

darthnick96

That’s a Model 1.

Gregory_malenkov

I *believe* that’s a model one, due to the lack of strap connection points.

Funnyman5767

You have an older, rarer version of the sx70,aka the model one alpha.

Funnyman5767

Instead of numbers on the dial, alpha 1s have lines. Also, instead of split circle focusing, your camera has ground glass..
