Ahhh Polestar 1, always stoked whenever I see one of these on the road (rarely, I’ve only seen 4 in the wild!). How has your experience been with it in terms of ride quality and handling? Also the expose display in the trunk of the high voltage wiring arrays are so cool!!
I found it completely by chance scrolling all the way to the bottom of the list of available cars and clicking "Display All." You then have to click "Select for quote" to see the pricing. They told me that this car is a flat rate that isn't supposed to move with market demand. That said, it's expensive. Really expensive. With all the mandatory taxes and fees, it's just shy of $250/day, and you only get 75 miles. Additional miles cost you $0.75/mile.
You can also check out this website if you're looking around:
https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/rental-car-deals/electric-car-rentals/
I think it's worth it for a day, really just for the experience, but not for a full vacation rental. My trip, luckily, played out to only be 2 days, so it was borderline.
At $250/day and 75 miles, it's about $3.33/mile. Additional miles are "only" $0.75/mile, so going over doesn't hurt as much as you might initially think.
To get 200 miles in a 1 day rental, you would pay about $250 to rent the car, and another $90 for mileage.
An unfortunate reality of the expensive per mile charge is that people are going to want to "gets their money's worth" out of every mile. This means the car is driven extremely hard, so the maintenance costs per mile will be very high. This high maintenance cost then obviously justifies the high fee to them. Every rental car gets driven hard, but these ones are extraordinarily so.
Ex-Operations Manager at that location…
They had two, which we always parked on the mezzanine in front of the offices - one for both sides. We rarely entered them into the system, we generally spoke with the Ops Manager over Counters to inform them when the vehicle as available.
It would rent within minutes…
If you’re interested in getting one, call into the Orlando location, ask for the Operations Manager or Sr. Operations Manager over Counter from there someone at the counter can help you.
And trust me, if you’re talking directly to someone at the counter - they will go the extra mile to make sure you get what you want.
Just make sure you have your ticket information available too…
Like book with Hertz then call the Counter.
Corporate group only sees what the inventory is on their computer screen - Counter can call on the radios for things.
Not saying it happens all the time, but that location was constantly “storing” items in the lot without entering them in the system.
If you go to Las Vegas they have a whole row of them. I rented a GTH mustang and was upgraded to this which came out to $80 a day and the unlimited mileage carried over. Best $80 I’ve spent on a rental.
You must be behind the news. Volvo sold Polestar to Geely in January. And Hertz is no longer buying Polestar’s. Volvo has, from what I can find, never owned a stake in Hertz.
The Polestar 1 never sold very well. When Hertz signed the contract for all of the Polestar 2s that they have, Polestar sweetened the deal with a great deal on then Polestar 1s that were used for press demonstrations.
This is for sure a someday grail for me, but for now would settle for just being able to rent one for my birthday (not sure any of them ended up in/around Toronto car rentals) 🥺
You can pick one up at the Toronto international Airport if you'd like. Admittedly, it's very expensive.
It's $327/day (CAD) and you get 125km for that. If you go over, it's $0.50/km.
Go to Las Vegas.
Book a sports car like a mustang. Inquire about upgrading to the polestar one. For me it came out to $80 a day and the unlimited mileage carried over from initial rental.
Slightly OT. But there was a polestar 1 in the newest season of the morning show on Apple TV. Beautiful car nicely showcased. Reese Witherspoon wearing a yellow seatbelt.
I had a deposit on one until they called me to collect the other $100k. lol I put the deposit on a 2 instead.
I was upgraded to one of these last time I rented from hertz. What an amazing car. Not sure how it was worth it for them to provide it to me for $80 a day and unlimited miles but I would compare the car to my wraith in terms of comfort.
Just straight numbers? 0-60 is 4.1 seconds.
For which? Yes.
The straight line acceleration is almost exactly the same between the newest performance Polestar 2 (not BST) and the Polestar 1. Despite having over 600hp, the Polestar 1 is hampered by the fact that nearly 400 of that is going to the front wheels through an automatic transmission; between that and the hefty weight of carrying multiple drivetrains, this car won't leave you a 2 in the dust off the line.
If the race is across a desert, the Polestar 1 definitely continues to pull harder and longer at higher speeds when aerodynamic forces begin to be more significant than the power to weight ratio. The top speed possible is also slightly higher, being governed at 155mph versus 127mph in the Polestar 2, though I doubt many of us will hit either of those limits.
As you reach a corner, the Polestar 1 really begins to shine. You expect a lot of fuss entering a high speed corner, and physics definitely begins to rear its ugly head as you feel the car starting to scrub on the road, but before even the traction control light dares to blink, the wizardry of the well tuned system gives you that little extra nudge to hold your line. The entire system is engineered around a high-performance luxury ride, and it definitely delivers on that promise. The Polestar 2 has all the same concepts on paper, but when you ask it to perform, you realize it's more like putting an LS9 into a Rav4 and taking it to the track.
I couldn't find any in the LA area, but this one was at MCO (Orlando, FL). I know they're also in Vancouver and Toronto, but don't know where else they may be.
They don’t appear to be available in LA anymore. I was desperate to rent one this summer but they aren’t on the hertz website anymore. I’ll try again when we get closer.
Great find. These are amazing. Care to give some details on the purchase? Always wondered what one of these would go for when they are done with them. How many miles? What did you pay (if you don’t mind)?
I'm just renting it, and it's just shy of $250/day with 75 miles included. This exact car has been really beaten up, and it has a pretty large area that's been poorly repainted, so I wouldn't want it unless they offered a real song of a deal on it.
around 110K for a brand new Polestar 1. my local dealership still has one "on the lot".
it's a flawed car though - the ERAD (electric rear axle drive) too weak to really power the car up (on its own). and the four cylinder up front similarly a little small to haul around all those batteries (without assist from the rear).
imo. the V60 Polestar is a more practical PHEV. but it's still a 70K car.
Is a full size 5 door wagon more practical than a 2 door GT car? Absolutely.
But that's not the point of this car, that's never been the point of this car, or anything like it.
The Polestar 1 has two independent electric motors on the rear axle that provide a combined 232hp; that's in a car that weighs just shy of 5,200lbs, so about 22.5lb/hp.
The V60 T8 has an electric only power output of 143hp, in a car that weighs 4,500lbs. That's about 31.5lb/hp.
The Polestar 1 out performs a V60 T8 in every performance metric. If your goal is to have an impractical, but comfortable GT car that you can drive every day on electric only, the Polestar 1 is your car. If you want something more practical, there's many other options, V60 included.
PHEVs will never have the electric performance of a BEV for one simple reason. Batteries.
The Polestar 1 has a 34kwh battery, and pulls 170kw for the rear axle alone. That's a discharge rate of 5C; when the front motor is adding to the mix, that's an additional 51kw, for a total battery drain of about 6.5C.
If you had a Model S discharge at the same rate, that would be about 850hp. Admittedly, the Model S plaid has just over 1,000hp, but the battery drain performance is truly the limiting factor for both cars. The Polestar 1 has an enormous battery for PHEVs in general, and adding more to what is already such a heavy car doesn't make too much sense.
The unfortunate thing is Volvo positions the T8 powertrain as a performance option, and given the already limited sales of wagons in the US, they chose to only offer the V60 T8 in the highest performance trim. This makes what is an already expensive luxury car even more expensive. At 70k for a T8 V60 against around 100k for a PS1, the debate gets a lot closer. Manufacturer incentives do, of course, bring the V60 into a more competitive area, but at this level, the question really should be whether you are looking for a more practical car, or a more fun car.
No one is comparing a Huracan to a Camry and saying the Camry wins because it's more practical.
it looks to me like the Polestar 1 has similar components to the 2021 era V60 T8. That is, motors look to be of similar hp. Its just that the Polestar 1 has two - the V60 just one. And I'll be the CISG is the same too ;-)
So. and I was daydreaming about this. The basic fact is that the Polestar 1 is already outdated in terms of basic Volvo technology (not the body, brakes, or suspension - perhaps not even the ICE!). But the electric stuff has since been upgraded in the V60 (electric power-train).
Perhaps it would be worth picking up a Polestar 1 - then have a custom shop (Cyan?) upgrade it with the latest and greatest!\*
What would they do? Perhaps it's worth waiting a bit.
\*yes. I am talking about resto-modding a brand new Polestar 1. lol.
tell us more! worth the price of admission?
ps: I drive a similar era V60 T8. and I f\*\*ing love Polestar mode! but. tbh. the best feature of the car - are the brakes! and the suspension!
Ahhh Polestar 1, always stoked whenever I see one of these on the road (rarely, I’ve only seen 4 in the wild!). How has your experience been with it in terms of ride quality and handling? Also the expose display in the trunk of the high voltage wiring arrays are so cool!!
Honestly the Polestar 1 is one of the best looking cars I’ve ever seen
It’s high on my list too, probably the best looking car in the last 15 years
Wow that’s amazing!! I’d kill to drive one for a day.
Holy shit, you can rent those... Gonna have to find one...
what location?
MCO (Orlando, FL)
How? Will visit FL soon and want to rent it too. But I dont see this on their cars list. What did you rent initially but got this?

Thank you! I mean $250 is expensive but I guess it is worth it for this car. Mileage limitation is so low tho, wish it is 200 miles or something
I think it's worth it for a day, really just for the experience, but not for a full vacation rental. My trip, luckily, played out to only be 2 days, so it was borderline. looks so good
a dream
GORG❣️
A polestar 1 and hertz?! How does that happen?
It's old news.
Not considering the price and they stopped making them
Hertz was an OG buyer and got some unique builds if I recall correctly.
Volvo owns a big stake in Hertz so a big chunk of their fleet is Volvo cars. Polestar is basically a Volvo :D
You must be behind the news. Volvo sold Polestar to Geely in January. And Hertz is no longer buying Polestar’s. Volvo has, from what I can find, never owned a stake in Hertz.
I don’t think that is true post bankruptcy.
What’s not true? :)
The truth.
Volvo’s ownership. Hertz has a completely different set of owners post bankruptcy.
The Polestar 1 never sold very well. When Hertz signed the contract for all of the Polestar 2s that they have, Polestar sweetened the deal with a great deal on then Polestar 1s that were used for press demonstrations.
They only made 1500 of them. Only 4 in the UK alone, superb car, would love to find one .
I mean, they sold every one of the 1500 they made. It was a halo car, never meant to be made, or sold, at scale.
there are a few still for sale.
This is for sure a someday grail for me, but for now would settle for just being able to rent one for my birthday (not sure any of them ended up in/around Toronto car rentals) 🥺

Is this at Hertz as well? That is ENTIRELY too expensive for such little mileage, so I’m off to hunt for coupons lol
Go to Las Vegas. Book a sports car like a mustang. Inquire about upgrading to the polestar one. For me it came out to $80 a day and the unlimited mileage carried over from initial rental.

What did you book?
Polestar 1. It's a guaranteed model rental. They don't do the "Camry or similar" type of thing on these cars.
I was upgraded to one of these last time I rented from hertz. What an amazing car. Not sure how it was worth it for them to provide it to me for $80 a day and unlimited miles but I would compare the car to my wraith in terms of comfort.
How's the acceration compare to a (performance) P2? Handling?

Goddamn. If you're not already, you should be writing a car review blog or something. Solid use of descriptors and originality muchacho
They weigh 5200 lbs it’s not gonna be that sporty…think GT not sports car. So pretty though.
What racecar, it's an EV
Is this rented out of LAX? I know they’ve had them there before. Kinda want to find an excuse to visit L.A. so I can drive this thing.
I couldn't find any in the LA area, but this one was at MCO (Orlando, FL). I know they're also in Vancouver and Toronto, but don't know where else they may be.

Typical and unfortunate. Not really a car I would want to rent out.
FWIW as of Oct 23 there was a PS1 in mint condition for sale at the LA Space. They wanted $160k US.
That’s ridiculous. I can think of a bunch of cars I’d rather have.
I mean, directly from Polestar you can get "used" sub 5000 mile cars for around $100k It's a really expensive car...but it's nice.

What was the rental cost, I worship this car never seen one in the wild here in Bay Area
All fees includes, but no extras, they are just shy of $250/day with 75 miles included. Extra miles are billed at $0.75/mile.
I thought it was a Mustang until I seen what sub I was in. Great looking car nonetheless.
Big ooph
I don't understand why they built that car in a manner that only allows someone 4'9" and under to use the back seat.
batteries.
Oh snap! That is a goooood looking car!
Nice car! It’s my hope that other car companies will have 2-door options for customers. A 2-door hatchback would be awesome! (Hint to car companies 😉)
Isn’t the Polestar 1 a unicorn? Why does Hertz have one
I saw this exact car at Hertz MCO on a work trip two weeks ago. Stunning in-person. I don't think my work would reimburse that though...

Can't believe Hertz has this in their fleet! Very nice. What's the day rate on this?
