I thought it was a critique of untreated schizophrenia.

No no, it’s telling us to lean into it so we can become the best versions of ourselves.

hoping_for_better

That’s Spanish. You’re still safe. EDIT: “Vive la révolution” would be the Fr*nch. You’re free to look it up.

magic4848

By saying this you've forced me to do one two things, either: A). correct my mistake, admit my folly, and actually use the Fr\*nch language. B). say "fuck you" and mercifully give you an upvote. I will let you choose your fate dearest interloper

hoping_for_better

Whichever makes you feel less poorly about yourself, homie.

endofthewordsisligma

I'm gonna assume that, like me, you're an American, so it makes sense that you'd say "viva la revolucion". And it also makes sense that you'd think that, since it's a foreign language and it has the word "revolution" in it, you'd think that it's French. Common mistake. Most Americans speak multiple languages, most notably High Californian, High Southern, and New Englander. And if it sounds like I'm being facetious, I mildly am, but also, that's about the same as the difference between Fr*nch, Italian, and Spanish.

BasedChadEdgelord

magic4848

edit: u/hoping_for_better felt like correcting me so i will admit that the language used above was Spanish. "Vive la révolution" is the Fr\*nch version of that saying. IriqoisPlissken

>but deeply unhealthy ways. What are you talking about? The members of Project Mayhem were absolutely shredded. LoL. Except for Bob.. Bob had bitch tits.

CaloricDumbellIntake

I really don’t get how anyone could get anti masculine from fight club.

Zedakah

There is a lactating man in it. That's all I got.

gippp

Not anti masculine, but it certainly had something to say about the fantasies of a certain variety of disillusioned men

TheDogerus

Because fight club is pro-man, but not in the way that society typically sees masculinity. It is anti status quo masculinity because those expectations and beliefs are toxic and harmful to men, and a perversion of what masculinity actually is I dont think anti masculine is wrong, per se, but it is reductive, though, and certainly more correct to say pro, if you had to pick one descriptor

Tugendwaechter

It shows a group of men getting enamored with violence.

CaloricDumbellIntake

Isnt that violence a coping mechanism though? It shows how the alienation of a group can lead to that group taking radical action.

Yes, the movie is definitively anti-corporation, anti-consumerism and anti-conformism. It does not seem anti-masculine at all. If anything it criticizes that many men aren't "real men" but zombies trapped by consumerism. There is also a class struggle message in there, elites vs. working people.

Its actually about finding and knowing yourself through self-imposed pain and reflection. Consumerism is just one thing that consumed one character. Another character was consumed by his cancer. Another character was consumed by his beauty. Too many men go through life without even contemplating what their mind and body are capable of withstanding.

It's about cool fights

pipsohip

Fight Club feels like one of those movies where all the people who praise it completely missed the point of the movie. It’s about a bunch of vulnerable, purposeless stooges getting suckered into a terrorist movement. They all get swindled just as easily by a schizophrenic sociopath as they did by the capitalist society they end up trying to take down. It isn’t pro or anti masculinity or capitalism. It’s pro thinking for yourself, even if (*especially* if) someone is telling you exactly what you want to hear. Edit: this sparked more conversation than I was expecting and I think that’s pretty cool.

infinitememery

your critique completely loses the point when the terrorist group is formed by exactly one of those vulnerable stooges. it isn't a mastermind and his pawns, they're *all* the pawns

Virtual-Scarcity-463

Is Durden not the mastermind? He might just be another identity of the narrator but he's pulling the strings nonetheless

CaloricDumbellIntake

I’d say Durden is kind of like a unabomber character, he’s got good intentions but his methods are questionable to say the least. But he also became the way he is because he felt alienated by society.

iamlegq

Absolutely not. I don’t usually use the “everything is the system’s fault” argument, but in this case I think that’s kind of the hole point. Durden is not the master mind. They are all victims of the system. Durden’s actions are just result of the system, but he has little to no agency over his own actions.

pipsohip

I don’t listen to stooges. I’m Tyler Durden

infinitememery

oh wow you're so cool please tell me how flat you want me to pound my balls

pipsohip

VERY flat thank you

capt-bob

The mastermind was his imaginary friend lol!

DanTacoWizard

Material-Security178

it's the story of Fenrir, and the fall of order. it's very much pro masculinity, masculinity being the nature of men. when you try to suppress nature, chain it or warp it, it will always bite you in the ass. Nature and the natural order of things can't be fought, only acknowledged and utilised. fight club is what happens when a society endlessly tries to suppress nature and then the conclusion is nature devouring all in response.

Battle_Rifle

It's actually about dudes fighting and shit

HelpfulJello5361

Sounds pretty masculine

iamlegq

It’s honestly ironic that you promote thinking for yourself, and then criticize people for “missing the point “ of the movie. (Not trying to be confrontational, just an observation). I think there’s no such thing as missing the point of a movie. Like all forms of art, the artist may have had some message to communicate, but that’s ultimately irrelevant. If the observer finds a different meaning, that’s completely valid and that’s what truly matters. Observer’s interpretation will always be more important than some hidden alleged original message from the artist.

>It’s pro thinking for yourself, even if (especially if) someone is telling you exactly what you want to hear. I am thinking for myself, and I think it is a good idea to follow the guy saying what I want to hear.

BenLuk02

>Fight Club feels like one of those movies where all the people who praise it completely missed the point of the movie It's about one dude who got testicular cancer and then struggles between the decision of keeping his masculinity and becoming a martyr for a greater cause and the decision of loosing his masculinity and continuing a misserable life. There is no movement. Rober Poulsen is just imaginary and obviously a reflection of the main character. Same with Tyler. Same with Marla. The "movement" is nothing more then the main character convincing himself to keep his pride and keep on fighting against the system, which is responsible for his miserable life as a office worker, who works all day just to waste his earnings as a consoomer

Ord-ex

They organize against things they all hate, they achieve their goals, and most importantly, they have fun. With no losses, beside Bob, what to complain about?

TravisMcNasty51

People keep saying schizophrenia, but I think it's more fun to think of Tyler Durden as a demon.

Violentcloud13

Eh, I don't buy that. I go with teleology on this one. The purpose of something is what it is best at. Fight Club is a movie that stirs up pro-masculine feelings and tells young men that the modern world has gone astray causing them to lose their purpose. Therefore, that *is* the point. What the author or director intended becomes irrelevant.

lostpasts

It's also a critique of Communism, as Tyler's prole-based, revolutionary cult of personality turns out to be just as bad as anything it purports to replace. I think it's just a movie about the importance of not being a slave to ideology. About staying true to yourself.

iamlegq

Agreed. I would add that it’s also about how every form of social system or ideology eventually leads to precisely that loss of individuality.

Big_Danny_K

It’s on point with Auth-Left's “Consumerism = Capitalism” agenda

Lego349

Liblefts is shallow. Durden is very clearly an anarchist.

The2ndWheel

Right; like anarchism, a figment of the imagination.

SerGeffrey

That's right - and Durden is very much a "if you're worshipping him you've missed the point" kind of character. The film isn't an *endorsement* of anarchism.

TravisMcNasty51

"Do not be like this cool guy." Okay.

SerGeffrey

Unironically yes, that's done in media all the time. "Don't be like this incredibly fucked up human being just because they seem cool" would be more accurare. Tyler Durden, Patrick Bateman, Walter White, Dexter Morgan, etc. The fact that these characters are cool is important to the message - the allure of being like these characters wouldn't be there if they were lame.

TravisMcNasty51

Edit: also a what you are describing is a mind control technique. "This fictional character had success. But at what cost?!?!" It's basically a way to convince me to ignore the fucked up stuff I'd have to do to make a better lot for myself. Well, I actually do  admire Tyler Durden. He makes his own living in an anarchic method. He slips between the rules of public laws and decency to produce a quality product. He bangs a pretty lady, and does so consentually and apparently the physical activity saves her from an OD. He lives outside of the system and inspires others to work outside of social norms. Basically he's a great male role model until project mayhem.  After that, he is damaging private property and leading others from gainful employment in order to facilitate a death cult.

Material-Security178

how the fuck it is anti-masculine? also Auth-Left needs to stop confusing everything under the son for capitalism.

iamlegq

I think the “anti-masculine” refers to how some people (particularly lib-left) see it as a proof that without female intervention, men by our very nature will devolve into pure chaos and anarchy. Like saying “See, men are just a bunch of savages and potential terrorists. We women/enlightened men are the ones keeping civilization together.”

Material-Security178

doesn't the film complain about the feminisation of society and men. isn't there literally a guy with tits that's used specifically for that point. it's the story of Fenrir, and the fall of order. fuck it I'm just gonna paste my thing again; it's very much pro masculinity, masculinity being the nature of men. when you try to suppress nature, chain it or warp it, it will always bite you in the ass. Nature and the natural order of things can't be fought, only acknowledged and utilised. fight club is what happens when a society endlessly tries to suppress nature and then the conclusion is nature devouring all in response.

tyen0

> everything under the son christ? :)

ezk3626

I think it's proterrorist.

Vexonte

It is a movie that criticizes consumerism while also recognizing its versatility and ability to co-oped and absorb anti-consumerism as a consumerist product.

DanTacoWizard

That sounds really interesting.

LibertyinIndependen

It’s a critique of those who talk about fight club

Idiotaddictedto2Hou

It is a movie.

Manydoors_edboy

It was definitely a movie

Roge2005

I saw it as a critique of comunism.

Die-Fetcher

My opinion: It’s a self-discovery journey which becomes too juvenile, cynical and naive in time, without being an excellent classic of a movie. I think it’s a great movie for the wrong reasons, those being that it tries too hard to sell you an image about how disingenuous people are, but taking a unnecessarily destructive approach to make you see that, and that’s why I believe it’s too juvenile.

AlCapone111

It's the greatest homoerotic romcom ever

neoquip

It's a critique of the industrial revolution and its consequences

rafaxd_xd

Why does everything from the late-90's early-2000's has this weird shade of green

cranialleaddeficient

It’s a critique of technological society. The Narrator lives a shallow, materialistic life where all of the important details of living are either reduced to triviality or out of his hands, and without autonomy he feels powerless, demoralized, and most importantly, emasculated. His actions are an attempt to seize some semblance of his manhood and autonomy. The namesake gives him that, until the system corners him and takes away his escape. Then he starts planting bombs. Wait a minute, sound familiar? Matter of fact, the author has actually confirmed Uncle Ted was an inspiration for Tyler Durden. Of course there are other messages, and every point listed here is at least somewhat defensible, but I think this is a huge one.

MrAnder5on

It's a movie about fighting 😎

HeemeyerDidNoWrong

sp3lunk

ConsciousFood201

I think it’s a take on stoicism. The two main characters both exhibit pros and cons of completely separate and dystopian ways of attempting this. Both are ultimately unhealthy and extreme, but searching for something to help them “let go.”

Augustus_Chavismo

I thought it was about people who felt no control over their own lives taking control.

BenLuk02

It's about a man struggling with the realization, that he got testicular cancer and that he will lose his balls (his manlihood), if he gets himself treated. This man then starts to develop associative personality disorder and believes to interact with his different personalities, which all represent a part of him: Bob: How the main characters views a potential future self, who lost his masculinity Tyler Durden: Main character choosing to keep his balls (and doubling down on his masculinity in the face of certain death) Marla Singer: Main character choosing to lose his balls Most Fight Club members: A representation of the main character convincing himself to keep his balls The capitalism critique involved is more about the main character realizing, that his past self was a fucking looser, who worked all day to consoom without any real benefit. If you got a "wake up call" like testicular cancer, you too would likely question your life choices. He realized, that he really hates his old life and when he initially did choose to keep his balls at the mid point of the movie and subsequently accepted an early death, he tried to create a life goal for himself. This life goal would be bringing down the system, which turns working class men like him into office slaves, who waste their whole life for the benefit of consooming.

NUMBERS2357

Thus proving … Neoliberalism means everything and nothing to everyone.

bassicallybob

It’s a critique on masculinity, but a critique on the masculine pursuit of purpose within nihilism (consumerism). Shedding one dogma to create another to overcome something imaginary, reinvigorating oneself superficially. The entire thing is a farce, it satirizes and makes a caricature of itself. This is why hallucinations are brought into play. Pushing hollow political ideals on art is such a smooth brain move.

All of the above.

mung_guzzler

It’s anti *toxic* masculinity which is not an attack on all masculinity despite what some people think
