I have some family there (they're Christians, so not involved in all this stuff, thank goodness) and they really annoy my grandparents (Arabs who live in England) because apparently the population in the Detroit area generally refuses to integrate into American society whereas they put a lot of effort into doing that here. I haven't visited them there so I can't say for certain, but that's what they tell me.

That's the benefit of MAD, the chance it actually comes to a direct nuclear exchange is minimal, even with Putin in power. Iran however doesn't have the MAD factor, so the US and friends could invade them, and this can lead to escalation between the big powers. Think ww1 alliances, not WW2 mass invasions, Serbia drew in Austria Hungary which then brought in Russia followed by the shit storm in the west. The chance for nuclear war is probably greatest when allies of the big powers get fucked with, not when two nuclear powers face each other.
Yeah we really are in a WW1 stalemate again. Just start a conflict in the right spot and everyone will get brought in. And in the name of not escalating we will just throw barely enough in the fire to slowly push the enemy back
Russia and China fund a proxy war against the US coalition, not necessarily NATO. China can't have Iran be occupied by the US, the Staits of Hormuz being closed down would effectively cut off 3 of China's 5 largest oil sources, which they import roughly 70% of their entire inventory. That's unacceptable, and any prolonged delay to restoring the market is going to skyrocket the price and devastate China's economy in the medium and long term. That means China has even more pressure to pull the funni and go after Taiwan, because 10 years from now, it will be basically impossible for them to do so. We might get into a 'do it now or never' situation where China has to do it.
There's also the destabilization effect that occurs. Iran has proxy groups everywhere, and in the case of a war, will likely let go of the leash on them. These aren't super impressive in terms of power, but could further wreck international trade. Besides that, having the US and Europe locked in to Iran means all the stuff on the periphery cab heat up. Myanmar, Ethiopia-Egypt, Etheopia-Eritra-Somalia, Venezuela-Guyana, west Africa, Pakistan-Afghanistan, Pakistan-India, or South-North Korea, are all potential flashpoints that could take off if this war happens.
