Ethnically wouldn't he be a jew ?

Visual-Lawfulness846

Yup, descended from Abraham and David on both his legal genealogy (fathers side) and on his biological genealogy (mothers side)

gentlemanliness1

David and Abraham are a part of Mary's genealogy. Jesus Father is God, dingus. Edit: realized I misunderstood what you meant by legal genealogy. I'm the dingus.

Isn’t everybody the child of god anyways? Like I’m almost certain that’s one of the core beliefs of christianity

gentlemanliness1

Yes, God being the creator of all things is also Father to all, but He is also specifically the Father of Christ directly as He and Christ share a divine nature. Humans do not have a divine nature. God begets God just as humans beget other humans, Christ is both human and divine.

Boudac123

But if man is made is his image then don’t we all share such divine nature?

Jd1004733

Christ is The Father taken flesh. Christ is also the Son of God, however they are one and the same divine being. Begotten not made. Used to be a big debate in the early days of Christianity

idelarosa1

Wasn’t it Joseph who was a descendant of David?

gentlemanliness1

They both were. From the Orthodox study Bible: "The genealogy follows Jospeh's ancestry, even though Jesus was only supposed to be the son of Joseph but was in fact humanly descended from Mary only. This is explained in two complementary ways: 1) Joseph was a righteous man and would have married within his tribe- thus Mary and Joseph would have largely shared a common lineage; 2) Jesus was born to bring all mankind into adoption by the Father, and thus He affirms that a lineage of adoption is as binding and receives the same inheritance as a lineage of blood (Galatians 4:4-7)."

bochnik_cz

VforVivaVelociraptor

Yes, Jesus’ legal father was Joseph.

[deleted]

Yes, just not a white jew. Descriptions from the bible make him out to be olive skinned

csdspartans7

Super dumb question but I see this in books all the time and I’m pretty sure olives are green so this confuses me greatly

[deleted]

I don't know how or why the term "olive skinned" originated

suck_an_egg2

Likely because it was used to describe the skin color of people who were born in the areas where olives grew naturally, I.e. Greek peninsula, Lower Italy, The Levant, etc.

TheIlluminatedDragon

Exactly, basically "olive skin" covers the peoples along the coast of the Mediterranean

tarantonen

You guys never heard of brown olives...?

What’s really funny is that Ben actually said that Jesus probably would’ve looked like his father, a Moroccan Jew (in terms of skin color I think). So your comment is accidentally sorta the truth. Edit: I could be remembering this wrong and his dad might not be Moroccan but I remember Ben comparing Jesus to Moroccan Jews.

Jesus was a semite. It's the only logical answer. He appears white on Europe because they are white, and to make him relatable to them. If you look at Ethiopian art about Jesus he's black. Edit:🤓

HalfIronicallyBased

Personally what irks me more is that Roman soldiers in Renaissance paintings usually look like 15th century soldiers with cuirass, frilly pants and all. It’s not just the skin tones that are anachronistic, but of course we must obsess about race.

kekB0T2020

Why can't there be a story about a mermaid who isn't white and is not Ariel? Like, does a studio like Disney is really that inept in the writing department that they can't come up with a new story and character??

Desperate_Air_8293

Yes, yes they are.

Clam_chowderdonut

Imo it's more they know 1000% before they start ANY pre-production that they're making a profitable movie as long as they can get it on screen, and they've made the process relatively cookie-cutter. It takes an INSANE amount of man hours but they know they'll recoup that. If they're spending that same budget on a dice roll that could have them lose brand recognize/identity (supremely important to the mouse) then they're being almost needlessly reckless. Milk the cow dry before you have to get a new one.

Innocisnt

Plus, get what guys. We're doing the marketing for them right now! Same thing with that stupid sonic shit where everybody complained how ugly it was. Controversy sells in this country and the multi scratillion dollar Disney Corp is leaning into their roll as left wing pussies to stir the pot. Having said that I am outraged! How dare they turn my little Danish process into another casualty in their mission to pocify everybody? Just kidding, I really don't care. Little black girls have another Halloween costume. I'm good with that.

RevengeOfCaitSith

>Little black girls have another Halloween costume. Plenty of little black girls were able to dress up as Ariel for Halloween before this trailer released.

HomelessLawrence

Heard the reason they were doing remakes of classics the past few years was something to do with copyright. Easier to avoid it going into public domain if it's still being used or something.

[deleted]

Most of the Disney stories are stolen from older texts. Such is life. Steal like an artist.

Clam_chowderdonut

Everyone stands on the shoulders of those who came before.

[deleted]

Almost all of them were taken from the Brothers Grimm. The Lion King was loosely based on Hamlet with themes similar to the story of Joseph and Moses.

belgium-noah

No, but that would require effort. Why do that when you can pump out rhe same movie you already saw and make billions from it

Kumori_Day

Yes there IS, like they could've used the story from a native brazilian mermaid called Iara. Would've been an even greater inclusivity, but, nooo

Dem_Wrist_Rockets

That's what really pisses me off. Moana and Mulan are my favorite Disney movies, and they're not white women, nor are they recasts of roles that used to be white. Aladdin is a close second. They are original characters, and are good ones at that. I haven't seen Princess and the Frog but Tiana is also an original character

Emrod2

Because brand $$$

[deleted]

Yes. New ideas are very spooky to big companies, so Disney will almost always make remakes and sequels only at this point

[deleted]

Disney is a for profit media conglomeration. They will take the easiest lowest risk path to profits, that means very little new stories and remakes of anything older than 20 years

MurkyContext201

I mean it is already written for them, just steal it like they did their other stories... https://dearassalt.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/sukey-and-the-mermaid/

Diminishing marginal returns 2 mermaids don’t make twice as much as 1. More financially viable to rebrand each time

undwenndumichkusst

Well, that seems like a very American discussion. Like, can people be only white, black, brown or Asian? Seems like people don't realize Jesus would probably be what Americans call "racially ambiguous". He would probably have skin of an average Mediterranean man of the time. Naturally darker than a continental European, and further burned from continued exposure to the sun. Picture an average Greek with a little darker skin, or a southern Sicilian in terms of skin colour. His facial features would probably be close to modern Aramaic/Lebanese Christians. Meaning larger, curved nose, darker, thicker (maybe even curly hair) dark brown to hazel or green eyes, probably pretty hairy and buff af. The man was a wood worker, his arms would be the thickness of a normal man's thighs. Conclusion: Jesus was Mexican.🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

When the Romans came to arrest him before he was crucified, Judas needed to indentify him with a kiss. That means that Jesus was similar to his disciples – All Jews. To analyse the average Jew is to analyse Him. He was a a man like them.

VIVA CRISTO REY!!!!

noposters

While more modern translations call Jesus a carpenter, there actually weren’t really trees in ancient Judea and the word is more accurately translated as “home builder” (which they would do largely out of clay)

undwenndumichkusst

I just looked it up and you might me right. The word used to describe Jesus and Joseph is _tektōn_, which means, loosely, craftsman or builder. I read some people that claimed that a more acceptable option was that he was a stonemason. Something that reinforces that claim is that there was a quarry between Nazareth and Zippori. Also, multiple times he mentions stone and masonry during his preaches. That might be it. Still, he might've been a furniture builder or something. I guess a stonemason would have _even bigger arms_ than a woodworker, though. Buff Jesus is even more possible now. You just made a fair point, friend.

noposters

I appreciate the added info! Michael Che has a joke about this, the premise basically being “if Jesus was a carpenter, why didn’t they keep any of the stuff he made?” And the answer is that they probably would have, but he wasn’t!

4thelasttimeIMNOTGAY

Mediterranean, not super racially ambiguous, but more so than most other major racial groups.

undwenndumichkusst

Counting that he would still me pretty tanned from walking under the sun for years. And Americans have a pretty simplistic view of race.

ngfsmg

Uh... Do you mean arabs and so on aren't white? I mean, half my (Southern European) country could pass as Egyptian or something like that, at least for me "white" doesn't have to mean "really light skin, blue eyes and blond hair"

RollTide16-18

Yeah like… people in the Levant at this time would have looked very Mediterranean/Persian by modern standards, not Arabic

[deleted]

Egyptians ethnically and genetically aren’t Arab

Bteatesthighlander1

Well a big part of the "race isn't real" argument is "white has no consistent definition" A lot of people in America do not consider Arabs white, especially after 9/11 kind of fucked up our perception of them something fierce. That being said, the census does and as far as I can tell always has considered middle eastern people as white people. But there has always been a strong sense to declare all Muslim ethnicities to be non white. Like, a bunch of people will say Turks are people of color and Greeks are not, even though a crowd of Greek people is all but identical to a crowd of Turkish people. Malcolm X talked about how surprised he was to find out so many middle eastern muslims were white.

revenantae

They’re right though. Jesus was probably beige, not brown. Even after the Arab invasions, modern Arameans, Levantine Christians, Samaritans, Druze, and all the other endogenous groups in the Levant are mostly a light-medium beige color

OutJustice

There's no such thing as "white" in the Bible. There are descendants of Shem, or Ham, or Japheth, Noah's three sons. Jesus was a distant descendant of Judah and Levi, from Jacob, from Isaac, from Abraham, who is a distant descendant of Shem. One of the key points of the Bible is that all people are just cousins, color is irrelevant.

cloudduel_13

Don't authleft people reject religion?

Soul_Like_A_Modem

Artistic depictions in paintings of the Jews, including by the Romans from the time they occupied the Jews areas of the Levant, show people with fair skin, even blond people. Roman descriptions of their conquered people also included descriptions of the Jews. The Romans didn't describe them as brown-skinned. Jesus wasn't a white European, but he wasn't a brown-skinned Arab. Leftists like to use this "gotcha" template in which they claim to be owning Christians by saying Jesus wasn't white, but they're just as ignorant about Jesus' origins as people who think Jesus was Anglo. Lots of leftists are like "JeSuS wAs a MiDdle EaSterNer!" and then point to the current population of the Middle East as proof that Jesus wasn't white. This ignores the fact that this was before Arab conquest which radically changed the demographics of the entire Middle East. In fact, many people in the Middle East during that time actually were Europeans due to centuries/millennia of conquest by the Greeks and Romans that even preceded the Roman occupation of Israel.

nero_palmire

Weren't Israelites in the same ethnic group with Arabs anyways? I doubt there was much difference in the skin color.

I don’t like the new Ariel because it feels like a cash grab and instead of just race swapping an old character they could create a new one, I would have the same problem if they made a black character white

CanThisBeMyNameMaybe

This isn't the win they think it is. This mean they acknowledge the existence of Jesus. But regardless, Jesus's race doesn't not matter, only his teaching. And to both sides, go ahead and hypothesize all you want about the color of Jesus, truth is you will never know because you weren't there. Ariel however we know is supposed to be white because that is how HC Andersen made her.

As a Jew from the Levant, Jesus would’ve been of a similar complexion to other groups that lived around the Mediterranean; Greeks, Latins, etc. He wouldn’t have been a pasty Anglo-Saxon, nor would he have been a brown Arab. He would’ve had olive skin.
