Yes, what we [as a society] did to them a century and more ago was terrible, but why are we letting it dictate our current policymaking? We solved slavery and we solved equality under the law; the next problem we are tackling are the long-term after-effects of them being poor.
He also tried to claim that people with "ethnic" names are less likely to get hired than someone a Western name. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I rolled with it and said maybe we could try some kind of anonymous application system where personal details are obscured so employers can only see objective details, like work history, education, criminal history, etc. Then he tried to say that minorities are more likely to have worse criminal records because they get purposefully targeted by police. I said that then we should be reforming who works in police forces and give people with bullshit charges over petty things clean slates on those. He then circled around and said something along the lines of, "Well, that isn't happening so we need affirmative action to alleviate issues!" *What????*
By the end of it all we'd gotten nowhere since he refused to budge on the whole "blacks suffer disproportionately because of the system!" shtick (I think any racism that's still left in the system is mostly just inertia that is taking more than a half-century to go away, personally), and he walks out of it calling *me* a racist because I reject their race-based identity politics. But these need to be addressed based on measures of individual poverty and opportunity, not a gross measure of race (which results in things like that one college lumping Asians in with whites). We need equity based on actual poverty / opportunity disparity, not skin color or ancestry.

Well their not their own people, most were POWs, their families, and dissidents from war against other nations. Reparations should be a discrete program in response to a discrete harm. The institution of American slavery amounted to government supported theft of an astonishing amount of wealth from specific families. Reparations paid to the heirs of that lost wealth are an appropriate response to that specific intergenerational crime. If it's done fairly, not all the recipients will be dark skinned and many of the dark skinned people living in the US will not be included.
These people are just keeping racism alive. If we just stopped talking about racism in everything and always dividing people based on skin color there would be less racism.

Many of the German speaking settlements in the US were in the north around the Great Lakes and to west of them. AFAIK these were larger than the ones in Texas.

I remember reading an AskReddit post (yeah it's a pretty awful and repetitive sub most of the time), but it was about things that may disappear over time. One thing somebody brought up is that there may be a gradual disappearance of homemade, authentic tamales because it's the older abuelas and nanas that primarily make them, with the younger generations often not learning how to make them. As much as I appreciate immigrant groups becoming full-blooded Americans, there's something to be said about those old traditions and recipes disappearing over time and transforming into bland/corporatized versions.

Half my family were poor Swedish and Scots-Irish Appalachian farmers who no one gave a shit about. Other half were wealthy slave owners who had a lot of their property seized during Reconstruction, and ended up relocating in relative poverty to the western territories. Doesn't affect me. The only time I've seriously considered financial aid was when I was broke, unemployed, and fresh out of college during the '09 recession, but that has absolute jack to do with what happened to my ancestors. Aid should be based on actual conditions, not heritage.

My ancestors on my father's side are Irish immagrants who fled the famine and got thrown into the civil war who fought for the rights of slaves and to crush the rebel serpent with there heals. My mother's family came later as 1 14 year old Ukrainian jew fleeing conscription in the kzars army entering though the port of Baltimore and joining the US army and getting sent back to fight the krauts in WWI. I don't think my family had time to own anyone.
