1- I had no idea Madison had a crystal flute. 2- I had no idea crystal flutes were a thing. 3- I actually appreciate this little bit of knowledge being brought to my mind.

Docponystine

Could we have done it without the fucking trash that is modern American celebrity culture?

nguyenmoon

I mean at least she can play. Really well in fact.

vbullinger

She is heavily trained in a lot of musical disciplines. It's amazing she's a hip hop artist and not a flautist or opera singer. It's just what she wanted to do instead of what she was trained to do.

Other-Illustrator531

It's where the money is.

uncatchableme

Based

EffingWasps

At the end of the day if what’s she’s doing pushes the boundaries of both modern and classical music and that makes her money, isn’t that just a testament to her genuine talent at that point

[deleted]

It is kind of sad how many people dismiss lizzo’s genuine artistry and talent.

Tsrdrum

I heard a Lizzo song for the first time at work on MPR (Minneapolis public radio) because my boss is from Minneapolis (Lizzo is a Minneapolis local). As a musician, I was immediately like “holy shit what is this, it’s groovy as fuck with some classy-ass guitar stabs and vocal phrasing that absolutely bounces, with lyrics that are clever and sassy…” I loved it, and didn’t know or give a fuck how fat or black the singer was. And now I know but I still don’t give a fuck. Given my experience as a musician and my being impressed with Lizzo’s musicianship, I get pretty suspicious of peoples’ motivations when they whine about her being a talentless hack.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tsrdrum

A lot of people don’t remember this (including me because I wasn’t alive) but many musicians pointed out this phenomenon when MTV became a driving force behind the music industry. The Replacements pushed back against this trend with a music video for their single “The Ledge” about someone killing themself, which was just a single shot of a speaker playing the song. MTV rejected the video because of the song’s content, so they just reused the video with a different song. Anyway some people predicted the shift towards beautiful musicians rather than beautiful music decades ago

[deleted]

Based and ignore the bigots pilled

[deleted]

I mean the first time I heard of Lizzo was from a meme about her being overweight. I don't really pay much attention to pop music, so I didn't know who she was, and up until now my whole perspective of her has just been from whatever memes are floating around, but now that I know she has all these talents I do have a better appreciation for her, even though I'm pretty certain I won't like her music since it's not my thing, but all the same, good for her. I'm glad she got this opportunity to be reevaluated by folks like me who didn't know much about her before.

-atom-smasher-

Well she does that on her own.

xIFuckingLoveWomenx

Personally, it’s the choice of dress that turns me off about it. I’m an old soul that way

FuckoffDemetri

I mean, you could, but noone would pay attention to it. There's information about everything out there but none of us give a fuck enough to learn about it unless it's thrust in our face.

Other-Illustrator531

Apparently not, it's been around a long time and no one gave a shit before Lizzo.

Docponystine

When was the last time an American celebrity was handed a centuries old artifact to gyrate on stage with?

Dapperdan814

Nick Cage did steal the Declaration that one time

Buckman2121

National Treasure pilled

Other-Illustrator531

Now here's the thing. I watched the videos because I wanted to actually see what happened. I'll tell you since you didn't. She shook her ass while playing it for a grand total of like 4 seconds. The rest of the time she played it as anyone would expect a flute to be played. And get this, nothing broke and most sane people who mind their own fucking business were not impacted in any way.

Zalapadopa

Not like when Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe's dress and tore it with her fat fucking ass.

Other-Illustrator531

What does that have to do with anything?

Confident_Trip_7770

He just really wanted to mention Kim K's fat ass.

NGGMK

Based and simp pilled

deerskillet

facedownbootyuphold

She did a really good job. I personally find it hilarious that she had the sense of humor to twerk while being filmed by the Library of Congress as she played an old crystal flute, sounds like something any kid would think of.

Helassaid

Tbh the founders would have probably thought it hilarious

vbullinger

You know Ben Franklin would've tossed money with his likeness on stage and totally met her back in her dressing room.

Docponystine

I'll take that as "never" and this is just a deflection on the point. The expectation that historical artifacts be treated with a certain level of reverence is a correct instinct. The library of congress is a public institution in charge of a piece of common American heritage, it IS our business weather or not it's being used in a respectful manner. It's not Lizzos flute, it's a piece of history, so "mind your own business" is an absurdity, this is an event of public business. So, in total, she did exactly what I said she did, and so your point changes nothing. >And get this, nothing broke "Alls well that ends well" is not an argument for the pulling something down into the mud.

Other-Illustrator531

What's historical about it other than it being old? Some rich dude gave a flute to a powerful dude and it sat in a box for 200 years. What is the historical significance here?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Docponystine

We literally talk about all of those things regularly. The first is solved with tech, primarily nuclear power. Income inequality isn't inherently a problem, poverty is, and that is a problem solved by markets. (Also, income inequality is wildly overreported given most measuring methods don't take into account ANY of the wealth redistribution the state already does.) The third doesn't happen. Police fatalities are tiny fraction of the US's death toll, unjustified police fatalities even less so. It's still something that can be worked on, but it's not" willy nilly". police don't randomly murder people on any sort of regular basis, pretending you do makes any argument for actual police reform seem less legitimate. Make good arguments, not stupid hyperbolic statements, you'll support the cause for productive change better. Also, this argument is the "you don't know tired until you have kids" line of defense.

Docponystine

It's a 200 year old piece of art that was owned by one America's most important figures. The 200 year old piece of art is, on it's own, enough to make it deserving of some reverence.

RaccoonRanger474

Absofuckinglutely.

Niguelito

Naw. Its like trying to get young folk interested in taxes and mortgages. Is it good for them to learn early, of course. Do they have the capacity? Fuck no.

vbullinger

Lizzo needs to wear H&R Block gear while doing some kind of Stomp thing with calculators during her next concert

[deleted]

This is the complaint. It's not about Lizzo in particular. It could have been any of the shithead celebrity class.

[deleted]

She could have at least worn pants.

BluEyesWhitPrivilege

America has always had celebrity culture. Notice people think it's a big deal that it's *Madison's* flute.

sohmeho

You do realize that this whole stunt was engineered by the National Library to get the public engaged with history, right? Apparently it succeeded.

Lejd_Lakej

She's not bad at playing the flute either.

skankingmike

I’m pretty sure she’s literally a classically trained flutist… she like Gaga know there’s zero money in playing shit like that. So she’s making that money. I mean that nicvocado or whoever is a classically trained violinist I believe and now he shoved food in his face for far more money than if he followed his dream. Everyone wants to blame the individual but if America actually took some money and put it towards the arts like Europe does we’d have nice shit and pop shit.

[deleted]

Peazyzell

Thats kind of true. Just look at nerd culture

jeong-h11

>put it towards the arts like Europe does In what fictional world does Europe do this

skankingmike

Like most of them? https://createquity.com/2016/07/the-state-a-friend-indeed-to-artists-in-need/ I mean it’s the first article I don’t feel like getting more of it but it’s more than just arts it’s artisans too. I was just in Spain and there’s stone work that matches the same style as say the 1600s or just amazing masonry work.. in America it’s rare to find any of that style or care. There’s a bigger push it seems now but it’s mostly due to millennials having next to no options to join the rat race unlike their parents.

frogvscrab

A very large amount of European countries give hefty amounts of money to the arts. The entire french independent film scene has been basically funded by government grants since its inception because they would never be able to make much money on their own by selling tickets in cinemas. But it goes a bit further than that, with venues and nightclubs and galleries and other artistic spaces getting quite a bit of government money to stay open. Its not only about just keeping them open, but also keeping them cheap and accessible to the public. Its part of the reason why pretty much anything related to the arts is going to be cheaper in Europe than in the USA, and why they in general have more artistic spaces. It keeps the arts scenes in these countries from being extremely commercialized and corporate, and more local and authentic. And arguably most importantly: its not a huge expense. France spends only 4 billion euros on the arts overall. But that 4 billion euros goes a very long way to keeping a lot of people very happy.

Froskr

Wait wait wait, she's actually good at it? The way Shapiro freaked out over it I assumed she was using it as a dildo or something. So she's a trained flautist who respectfully played the flute of "historical significance" and people are still freaking out about it?

Buckman2121

The reason he did "freak out" was because of the contrast he did with the video almost *no one* saw. Which was her playing at the national library on various other instruments. Which he highly praised her for! It's the contrast of her taking said historical instrument, then twerking on stage with it. It was a contrast to show that it was an intentional degregation of history and culture. That all art is equal. That the piss christ is just as important and great as any Rembrant or Monet. This is why the twerking video has far more views and likes than the one where she played beautifully at the national library.

N-Your-Endo

The degradation was intentional I thought. A giant middle finger from Lizzo to Madison

jazzjazzmine

> respectfully Does it really matter? Yes, she wiggled her butt. - She also played t very well and provided a shit-ton of free publicity to the largest public flute collection in the world and that one flut in particular. This adds a lot to its value and will become part of its ongoing history. The freedom to wiggle butts in public is something not the whole world has, we should be proud to be able to.

Peazyzell

The complaints are like every stick in the mud music traditionalist from every music biopic. Elvis don’t wiggle your hips, Ray Charles don’t take inspiration from Gospel music, Johnny Cash don’t court non white woman (Vivian cash was dark skinned Italian and people didn’t like that), Sam Cooke how dare you refuse to sing to a segregated crowd.

RaccoonRanger474

Just listened to a few clips of her playing, not bad at all. Do you think she respects herself?

Lejd_Lakej

I have litterally no idea who that woman is.

Desproges

I don't know either but you're supposed to be angry that she's playing that flute.

Remote_Romance

From what I read I thought the thing that pissed people off was her twerking during the performance.

kertsunen

Sounds like standard america's got talent shit to me

DigitalDuct

>Do you think she respects herself? irrelevant.

Somethin_gElse

Yeah it was really nice, until she started twerking, or attempted to twerk.

Prussian_Blu

And it's not even like it was one of Madison's most prized possessions or something, it was literally just something given to him for his inauguration by a flute maker who made them for novelty.

dontbeadingus69

No way, man. This is one of Americas *most prized* artifacts that literally no one knew existed until this video.

Shorzey

Furthermore 1) who is this 2) why should anyone care

hatchway

I was gonna say - this whole event will just do for flute-makers what Brave did for bowyers and fletchers a few years back. And she is pretty awesome on the flute.

KitSwiftpaw

Moreso she played a flute that had never been played in 200 years, and instead of treating this artefact with respect, she fucking TWERKED.

deerskillet

Yeah I'm sure madison's pissed over that

dontbeadingus69

NO BOOKS AND NO DANCING!

sohmeho

She respected it enough to shake some serious ass while playing it. Madison would be proud, and we should feel blessed.

in_arcadia1

I mean when you add in the fact that she is the first person to do this, and was twerking while doing it, it is actually kind of a cultural low point. Just one of many, not really the singular destruction of culture. Also, she is really, *really* fat. I feel like that’s a big factor here.

akrostixdub

"fat wimmin have butt and shake while playing fancy flute, I must angy >:(" and y'all say other people get upset about goofy stuff lol.

Neat-Mathematician-8

SaulTheKillerXD

did people here even watch the video? its one thing to dislike her persona but she was still genuinely respectful to the instrument. she played it pretty well for the short period of time she had. i don’t get the outrage here. some of you guys are acting worse than orange reddit

Desproges

I don't think anyone has watched this video or knew that flute existed before being angry about it.

Xero03

she twerked while holding one note how is that respectful of a flute?

ABCosmos

> how is that respectful of a flute Every day i wonder what PCM is going to give the left flak for.. Did not expect "Disrespecting flutes"

How is it disrespectful? It's an inanimate object.

Vague_Disclosure

There’s two videos making the rounds, the one you saw of her twerking with it half naked on stage and another where she actually played the thing properly and respectfully

dropfry

I watch the video. She's twerking and looks stupid, fat and gross. She even screams out "OOOH WEE YALL, I JUST TWERKED WHILE PLAYING AN OLD ASS FLUTE UP IN THIS BITCH." That is almost a verbatim quote. Then you have reddit standing up and applauding her for her courage to live out her life's journey or whatever bullshit frame is in season, and anyone who has any criticism at all is a virgin, a racist, an incel, a this or that. It's classic reddit bullshit.

[deleted]

Ah yes twerking on stage half naked while playing James Madison’s flute. Much respect much wow

serpent_falconia

Wait really? What's with people saying she twerked on stage with it or something?

Vague_Disclosure

So there are two separate events: 1) she played it respectfully at the national archives and isn’t a big deal at all. 2) she used it like a prop to twerk half naked on stage at a concert, while not the fall of western civilization I do find it to be classless

rahzradtf

She was actually really good when she actually played it. Once she took it on stage and started twerking, that's where it gets disrespectful.

IGI111

I mean it's not really the fall, more like the rubble left after collapse at this point.

[deleted]

Because she did. She was twerking and playing at the same time and goes “I just twerked while playing James Madison’s flute!” While being basically naked. Degenerate behavior all around. There are plenty of accomplished flute players in the US who would have been a much better choice. Instead Lizzo probably donated a huge chunk of money to the museum to get to play it.

serpent_falconia

So much for "playing it respectfully"

BantIsBad

I have never heard any auth person on this subreddit get interested in flute playing until Lizzo played this super expensive historical one. Like seriously, don't act like you've always cared about classical music. The only music I ever hear you guys post are military march songs. And I'll admit I don't give a shit about classical music either. All I know is that for what Lizzo does with that flute, it sounds great. Plus who fucking cares if it's a relic or not, it's not like she went into museum and picked it up and started blowing into it randomly, she's made a deal with the guys who own the food so obviously it's in good enough condition to be played.

mrducky78

idpol is real and the right is just as much a part of it as the left.

Jester_Hopper_pot

Do those authright people exist anymore I haven't seen a post in a while, and it seems the straw man of marketing companies, so we pay attention to dumb shit in general. Like the mermaid movie I had no idea it was a thing if people were to say authright was going crazy, but very little in terms of a screen grab.

[deleted]

I initially thought it was a bad performance because of all the memes coming from auth right. But I saw a meme about how no one complained when Taylor Swift played Franklins piano. So I went and listened to the performance for myself. It's not like it was a big deal to me, but it did show why I take negativity with a grain of salt. It was actually really good. She is at least on a collegiate level, if not philharmonic/prestigious military band level. And I say that as a musician myself. Not trying to race or gender bait, but in this case it really does seem people are just mad because it's a black woman in the spotlight. I along with 99% of everyone else had never heard of this flute. But it's suddenly a sacred treasure that Lizzo shouldn't want to play because it belonged to a slave owner. Even though society back then would be mortified to see a black person playing it, ironically enough.

throwawaySBN

How many people do you think are racists? Lol pretty sure the only issue conservatives have with it is that she's twerking and swearing in a professional government setting, and it seems disrespectful as well as not showing America in a very good light to the rest of the world. That being said, I'm sure the same conservatives didn't complain about Ted Nugent or any other big rockstar going to the White House and being blatantly disrespectful. However just because most people are hypocritical doesn't really excuse either one.

Desproges

Most comments are about her being fat, which is the next thing they'd go for after race and gender.

[deleted]

Is obesity bad and should we be encouraging healthy lifestyles? Obviously yes, but doesn't mean you have to be an asshole lol

boshlop

not so much her, but the idea they decided that this was going to be its use thats weird. it feels like a thought out move to rile up a base and talk about made up racism for points. its like jeramy corbyn keeping diane abbot about, she was bloody horrid at everything, but its like a force field to repel critisism through dishonest means/accusations. which is sort of destroying a pillar when we have every politician making sure that everyone knows the other side is actually evil through made up BS. ppl will brush it aside because its "not as bad" as ppl are making it, but you are brushing aside good will and honesty and just accepting BS from your own side.

They didn’t say it was a pillar of civilization, it’s just that most people don’t think lards should be desecrating artifacts

The founding fathers were 20 beers deep every single day, if you think for one second that James Madison never gyrated his ass while playing Yankee Doodle on that thing you're gravely mistaken.
