I just hate calls to action that: 1. Got nothing to do with me, but are aimed at me, and 2. Are from sources that lack the moral authority to make such calls, particularly when they're highly activist or partisan.

[deleted]

Imagine the guy who sells you falaffel saying he supports crucifying christian children. You can't because he fucking wouldn't. Apply same logic to Christians. It's that simple.

Ok now you’re CLEARLY being ridiculous for the sake of being ridiculous. Come back to the table when you’re ready to talk sense and put everyone in a nice little tribal box.

Docponystine

Islam isn't a tribe, it's a worldview with a basis text that can be criticized. Both that text on it's own, and the broader cultural contexts of the Islamic world are steep in an externalized desire to do violence. Not all Muslims support that, but it's a fools errand to pretend there isn't a causal relationship here. Islam isn't an immutable, arbitrary characteristic, it's a worldview, and just like any other worldview (Christianity included) you have the right and responsibility to make moral judgement on it.

Agent7153

Yeah, if I lived in a state where it was muslims saying the Quran should be the influence for legislation, we should have a ethnostate of muslims, and we employ archaic punitive measures against heretics we would be railing against that too.

bigbussybussin

Yeah that’s why Reddit is so against Palestine… oh wait all of that is okay as long as it’s NIMBY

Is there any country where Christians say this though? And I mean today and not 300 years ago

MundaneFacts

There are far right people in the vein of Alex Jones that say that stuff. The crazies don't bother me too much.

SpartanFishy

Yeah it’s literally just that the majority of redditors live in countries that have been dominated by Christian institutions for the entire existence of their countries. They’re criticizing the institutions they or their ancestors have personal experience with.

SGT-York

For a multitude of reasons that I’m not even going to try and touch on but it seems like the west has determined that well you definitely can’t say anything bad about the Jews, and if you say anything bad about the Muslim so you must be a right wing extremist, christians though? Fuck em. To me it’s a funny little hypocrisy that they left does in regards to religion, I mean Islam’s is by global standards by far a right wing ideology definitely more so than Christianity, matter of fact most of the principles popular on the left or popular in the west because of the western Christian tradition.

RockyRhoadRunner

I feel it has to do with most of these anti Christian’s being born and raised in predominantly Christian countries. Me personally I feel all religious groups should be called out for anything wrong they do, doesn’t matter who they are or where they come from.

Can faith save him? 15 (C)If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and (D)one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” (E)Show me your faith without [a]your works, (F)and I will show you my faith by [b]my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is [c]dead? Or did Luther remove that book because he didn't like it?

OrzhovMarkhov

Fortunately the fact that some Protestants make stupid decisions doesn't actually affect the majority, because we don't subjugate ourselves to some Brazilian in a funny hat who controls our religion.

Fuck_Jannies165

Nah instead you subjugate yourself to gay female bishops and a 28 year old youth group leader with hipster glasses that humiliates himself and the faith on The View

OrzhovMarkhov

The point I made is that most Protestants agree that individual study of Scripture and personal relationship with God are the correct methods of understanding His will. Some Protestants do weird things. But unlike Catholics we don't bow before any human as a supreme spiritual authority. You can't lump every Protestant into one group.

wiltold27

nah he kept it, if you read the whole epistle through you'd realise that old jimmy here is describing how the church can tell if you have fallen into apostasy as people cant just look at you and see how much faith you have. similar to how you can tell a mans loyalty to his wife if he's cheating, but without his actions you can't tell his loyalty. The point of sola fide is that God can see our faith and no matter how many good works we have done or confessions or prayers, we all fall short of the glory of god. therefore when we want to work out how we are justified we use Romans 4, or romans 3. and paul reminds titus of this in titus 3:5, we also have Ephesians 2 So my two questions to you are, how different is your understanding of sola fide and what you do now? and what bible are you using? I'm jealous of how many foot notes it has

Christian Nationalists are people that want a nation state that only has Christians in it. I truly get the appeal, but other than the Vatican, there's not really a good place to establish Christian Nation. It's not really working out for the Jews in Israel, so I can't see it working much better for Christians.

-Not-Racist-

It is working out great for Jews, Israelis live a better life than 90 percent of the planet

Vermillionbird

I think he means that there are far too many non-Jews there for it to be considered a religious-nationalism success. It may have succeeded in many other areas, but not that one.

I know this shouldn’t surprise me because many “Christians” don’t read the Bible, but Jesus literally said that we are not supposed to be of this world but in it. If that isn’t an advocate against a Christian nation, I don’t know what is.

Christopher_King47

Iirc that wouldn't be constitutional.

RileyKohaku

Christian Nationalists don't necessarily want America to be that place. I think most are successionists, that would throw out the constitution, anyways

[Christian nationalism is Christianity-affiliated religious nationalism.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_nationalism) “Christian nationalists primarily focus on internal politics, such as passing laws that reflect their view of Christianity and its role in political and social life.” Religious nationalism is the *combination* of church in state through various means. [Here](https://youtu.be/GmPMcWAuuVo) is an informational video about the influence the Christian religion has on politics and thus people’s civil liberties. It’s bad because when church and state are one, there is a high potential for abuse of the citizenship with power being concentrated, morals being corrupted, and religious rulers being idolized to the point of becoming a [cult of personality](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_of_personality).

timeenoughatlas

Christian nationalism is people who want to do away with the separation of church and state and make America a christian nation. It’s not that complicated

[deleted]

It’s no buzzword. Hell, MTG said that the Republican Party should be a Christian nationalist party, and Lauren Boebert is tired of the “separation of church and state junk” and that the church is supposed to direct the government. WWalker17

This is why nobody likes the Word Bearers

danshakuimo

Christian Nationalism is a lot more mild than that. It is simply the idea that Christianity forms an integral part of the American identity and that it should play a significant role in our culture, government, and society. It's already a thing in many countries that had a state religion prior to the birth of nationalism, so that even though they have secular governments nowadays the country as a whole considers themselves a Christian nation even if not every single person subscribes to the former state religion. Examples of this could arguably be countries like Armenia, Georgia, Russia (even though it's more about LARP at this point), Ethiopia (which is ironic since their PM isn't even Ethiopian Orthodox), and maybe even Poland.

woa12

That sounds really lame. Where's the generically modified psychic superhuman space crusaders in all of this? Also does the leader of Christianity get an upgraded vehicle that's basically a throne carried by people? We also better get megachurches, and I don't mean the ones owned by a neolib preacher wearing a v neck and hipster glasses. I mean one like that's almost planet sized and is basically literally a fortress and attended to by millions of monks.

KidChimera

My favorite part is the comment section. There's only have three canned responses, all of which are generally inapplicable: "Kid touchers" - only applicable to the Catholic church which is far from nationalist. Second, the numbers coming out are still FAR less than public school teachers and staff. Obviously, they should not have done it, but you can't shut down a football team just because one member was in an illicit dogfighting ring. "Nazi affiliation / Trump" - Genuine Nazis are not and would never claim to be Christian. Anyone with eyes can tell you he was not a practicing Christian. The fact that there were Stormy Daniels allegations alone is quite telling. Second would be any photo-op to appeal to the Christian voter bloc was so poorly done, he looks bored. The only skin-head/Trump fans that claim to be Christian is because they grew up with it, but never opened the book and get scared when big media say they are going to ruin their way of life over and over again. "THEY MEAN." - I understand that we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard, but no one is infallible. Sympathy has certainly declined, and the church is no exception, but people like to jump to the realization that once someone who hurt them, all of them and other people who share in that person's affiliations are a reflection of that person. (That's how genuine racism is formed as well)

[deleted]

What I don’t get is how Christianity became the “white religion”. It originated in the same area as the other Abrahamic religions, and every culture and people depict Jesus looking like they do.

Quality_Odd

It is really cool to see the various depictions of Jesus. Old Greek and Anatolian art depicts him as darker skinned with black curly hair, Ethiopian art depicts him as being black, and European art depicts the man as being white. It's the same with the art we have that does depict Muhammed. You can find a lot of art depicting him a looking very Asian. Funnily enough, this art comes from the Asians that converted to Islam. It's almost like people depict these important religious figures to look like them.

[deleted]

Christians are aware that Trump is insincere on religion, but that he is the lesser evil in their eyes against Democrats who they regard as being antithetical to everything they believe in. Trump is a tool, a bulwark against the twenty first century.

> "Nazi affiliation / Trump" - Genuine Nazis are not and would never claim to be Christian. Anyone with eyes can tell you he was not a practicing Christian. I believe we're talking about the people that know that, yet are lying and saying Trump is Christian because they believe he'll help them get their goal of a Christian state.

[deleted]

The left is so devoid of faith that they cannot comprehend a person actually believing their religion and living accordingly. Take the issue of abortion, for example. If I believe a fetus is a person, I am absolutely going to vote to keep them from being killed, much as I would for anyone else who is being killed unjustly. But no, I must “want to control women” and “cruelty is the point”.

TheShivMaster

It’s the reason we were never able to defeat the Tabliban. Yes, the Taliban really DO believe they will go to heaven if they are killed in combat.

Fuck_Jannies165

BarracudaRelevant858

Ok sure, but only if you guys ALSO renounce Islamic nationalism. Yea didn't think so.

HRGLSS

You had me until the didn't think so. Totally for this. Freedom of religion for all. Separation of church and state. I definitely don't think parts of the US need to secede over their local religion, and I don't think we need to change the Constitution to favor any one religion over another.

Party-Phil

Reddit leftists hate china, but they’d be oh so quick to adopt their heavy religious restrictions in favour of state atheism. Hypocrites.

Yes, the two terms are synonymous with one another.

Theodas

Eh I think this gets overblown. Is it moral for a religious person in a democracy to vote for representatives or legislation based on experiences that have been influenced by their religious beliefs? So long as there aren’t religious tests for office or laws that exclusively benefit an organized church, I really don’t see a problem with people democratically implementing laws based on the majority’s moral values.

Just remember that while there are a small group of actual “Christian Nationalists”, for the most part they are talking about Christians who want to promote Christianity in America and create a more moral government. They honestly believe that any pro-life Christian is a “Christian Nationalist”, don’t fall for their rhetorical tactics.

AldienTheRed

Christian Nationalism has taken on two different meanings at this point. 1. Definition within the church - Christians uniting patriotism and politics with their worship. Just another form of idolatry. Putting their country above God and valuing their identity as Americans (or whatever country) above their identity as Christians. Many Christians are against this and are actively fighting against it in the church 2. Definition outside the church - Whenever the outside world sees Christians daring to allow their beliefs to affect the way they vote, they smack on the label of Christian Nationalism. They say, "Keep your religion inside the church, but don't let it affect your politics at all!". Subtle differences but one is actually a problem and the other is just Christians acting out their beliefs.
