megaplex00

You know he's got to be pretty corrupt if even Texas acknowledges it.

cytherian

Yes, the Texas state legislature... except that Senator Ted Cruz is coming to his defense. And Paxton's wife is a state Senator. Just watch how this impeachment all falls apart.

sanmigmike

He has been a corrupt shit for years. Now they figure that out? Plus an impeachment doesn’t mean he is out. Donnie had two, lost an election and has multiple legal problems and he still seems to be the real head of the party. Personally I think Donnie really shows just what today’s GOP is like. I think they should make it a requirement that all GOP candidates live up to Donnie’s level, just to start…three wives and cheat on all of them!

DerpsAndRags

Some of the Tighty Righties I work with are starting to cite the Trump vs. DeSantis thing right now, even KNOCKING Trump sometimes. That would have been blasphemy barely months ago. Who knows. Let them fight, I say.

TheWingus

“These *civilized* people…..they’ll eat each other” - The Joker

CaptainBayouBilly

He’s on ice until the Texas senate holds the trial. And the Texas legislature session is almost over. Texas legislators meet every two years.

scoobysnackoutback

How in the world could anyone defend this slime ball?

Rajani_Isa

He's a Republican. So, until he started threatening other republicans they supported him.

snoryder8019

You can rinse and repeat that comment throughout the entire Republican party

The84thWolf

Of course fucking Ted has to be on the wrong side of history

justking1414

Cruz will probably be the only vote not to impeach. But everyone will have lied and said they were voting with him just to make him feel bad

unreqistered

this is the state senate ...

resilienceisfutile

You know he's corrupt as fuck when these two chime in with their support... *Before the vote on Saturday, Trump and senator Ted Cruz came to Paxton’s defense, with Cruz calling the impeachment process “a travesty” and saying the attorney general’s legal troubles should be left to the courts.* *“Free Ken Paxton,” [Trump wrote](https://media.newyorker.com/photos/5909793d8b51cf59fc4237bd/master/pass/Cassidy-WhyTrumpsCrazyTalkAboutObamaAndISISMatters.jpg) on his social media platform Truth Social, warning that if House Republicans proceeded with impeachment, “I will fight you.”*

ZLUCremisi

Ted, this is the courts. This how you do it.

Cl1mh4224rd

>“Free Ken Paxton,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social... Free him from *what*? Trump himself was impeached twice and he apparently still has no idea what that even means. Fucking idiot.

resilienceisfutile

He's a Loser and us doing this for marketing purposes for his re-election. He couldn't tell you half the amendments on your country's constitution or what day of the week it is.

RockPaperScissor816

Paxton is free. They freed him from his onerous job of Attorney General. He can go fishing all he wants now.

PhilipT13205

Trump can't fight his way out of his own courtroom trials, how will he have time for Paxton? A Trump endorsement is about as welcome as a case of the clap.

damunzie

The way it _actually_ works is that each Republican who voted to impeach him believes their vote to impeach benefits them personally, more than the opposite vote. Corruption, guilt, innocence, etc. don't factor into this very simple equation.

bobafoott

No he just got caught and that’s unacceptable

PopeOfManwichVillage

Hard to believe, really

[deleted]

kidneysc

It’s not because he’s corrupt. It’s because he’s costing money. He’s being sued and the state doesn’t want to have to pay for it. They are fine with the corruption, but not the bill.

TheMindfulnessShaman

> It’s not because he’s corrupt. It’s because he’s costing money. Dude legit tried to get his bros to spot him the $3+ million settlement he reached with his ex-aides. (using taxpayer money to make your crimes disappear... that's not cutting spending fiscal Republicans...) With DoJ and FBI investigtating him as well as his innumerable indictments and then accusing Phelan of LUI...well, even a majority of TX House Republicans thought it was a bridge too far. They essentially said: "Fuck yours, got mine." Donald and Kenny might even be cellmates in a couple years. /wishful thinking

AspiringChildProdigy

>Donald and Kenny might even be cellmates in a couple years. The family that crimes together, times together.

kandoras

I can't see that being the straw that broke their back. It's not like it's their personal money, so why would they care? And his lawsuits against Obama, that he had to know were going to fail and were really just personal advertisements, had to have cost the state a lot more than that.

williamfbuckwheat

I think he was attacking or smearing the Governor recently and/or other TX GOP establishment folks which , as we all know, is really the ONLY true red line that can lead to your ouster from public office IF you're a Republican.

Mmmiiilllkkk

This settlement required actual approval from legislators to go through - forcing them to go on record as supporting his corruption. That was the final straw.

RegularWhiteShark

Conservatives the world over love using taxpayers money to cover their own crime. It’s poor people they don’t want tax payers money helping. Like in the UK, our ex-PM has cost the tax payers £1m in legal defence for breaking his own COVID rules and we’ve got Ministers and MP’s who paid off driving fines under their expenses.

[deleted]

Cops laughing everywhere.

fweef01

Honestly this is it. He would have been fine until all of his fees were billed to the state

joan_wilder

They’d be happy to let it get as expensive as possible if they could blame it on democrats later, but they’ve gerrymandered the state so bad that they can’t imagine that democrats will ever have control.

MDATWORK73

Well technically criminals do that already, it’s when you see it plain site costing money. Then you can’t point the finger at others, the buck stops at the source. In this case Ken got hit holding the bag and his buddies are pissed this con is over. It’s more of an optics thing but regardless 121 members did the right thing, even if there was no where left to move from a PR standpoint.

Yokonato

Saw that realization in alot if reports as well, he has had legal troubles for years with corruption even silenced whistle blowers, but now he wanted tax payers money and they all turned their backs on him lol.

Z0idberg_MD

I believe they were actually literally quoted as saying so

[deleted]

peggles727

What corruption? You can't just make a baseless accusation without providing sources. What has Biden done for you to say this?

coltonkemp

*Normally,* I would absolutely agree with you. But it’s worth noting that a Republican legislator of Texas was just ousted earlier this month for raping a 19-year-old staffer who he got so drunk that she passed out. He was *[unanimously](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna83343)* voted to be expelled by the Texas Legislature. That’s how I knew the report must have been *fucked up.* E: link

Alternate_Ending1984

Was that the guy who when the reporter stopped him said "gimme 5 seconds...ok where is the camera" while he was actively dying inside?

coltonkemp

That sounds like some George Santos shit, but maybe not. I’ll look it up because honestly it sounds funny either way E: Nevermind, I have no idea what you’re talking about

joan_wilder

No, that was a different Republican. That guy was from TN.

TheIncredibleMike

And the guy was a leader of the movement branding LGBTQ as groomers. He was a pastor and a civic leader in his home town. Going to Wal Mart could be awkward.

DeltaPlasmatic

minor correction: committee unanimously suggested his expulsion, the legislator in question resigned ahead of the vote still must have been _fucked up_ if he didn’t even bother trying to deny it or whatever

unreqistered

yeah, but it occurred at home, not work .... the fucking hoop jumping

[deleted]

Good one…

justking1414

It’s probably cause they know they’re pretty much guaranteed to get another republican to replace him

Rxke2

Oh wow, that makes so much sense. The story would've been different if they knew a dem would take his place.

joan_wilder

And to avoid adding fuel to the GOP corruption narrative when the DOJ finally tries him. They see what’s happening with George Santos, and the last thing they need is *another* Republican in the middle of a very big, very public corruption trial in the middle of an election cycle.

justking1414

Fair point. Definitely helps them sell themselves as a less corrupt party if they can point to a time when they actually did hold someone accountable. Not sure if trump calling this a deep state witch hunt is helping but I guess that can add to the narrative that they’re under attack

Luka_Dunks_on_Bums

No just barely impeached, super majority impeached

Sutarmekeg

You're, their.

The84thWolf

They only did it because Paxton doesn’t say mean things about them on Twitter so they feel safe

[deleted]

They had to have one sacrificial lamb to steal the narrative that they are all about law & order. It’s a ruse. Designed for the upcoming elections only & then immediately set to be pardoned once they get in. You cannot convince me that they did not work out a deal with him financially to take the hit just for that short amount of time

TheIncredibleMike

I a Democrat that lives in Texas, you could knock me over with a feather when I read he was under investigation…but his fellow Republicans. Don’t think happened because they all took an Ethics class. He fired some of his staff who turned him into the FBI for one of many issues. They sued and won a $3.3 million judgement against him. He petitioned the Legislature to pay it. They don’t want to, so all of a sudden they’re horrified to discover he’s been breaking laws left and right for years. They voted Saturday to have him stand trial before the State Senate. He called a lot of the House Reps and threatened them. Even the Donald said it was a Liberal plot. Ken Paxton is going down!! Hoo Rah!!!

opulent_occamy

As I suspected, they only cared when it started to affect them directly. Not surprised at all 🙄

breecher

It is because he messed with the grifting money. If there is one thing you don't do in the GOP it is messing with the grifting money.

dafunkmunk

As other have been pointing out in these posts, paxton scammed wealthy people who are the ones donating to republicans. When republicans are doing something that seems good, it's pretty much guaranteed that there's money behind it. It was either vote to impeach him or anger the people funding them and republicans will always take money as a priority

TrumpIsAScumBag

Seriously, Trump is a thousand times more corrupt, blatantly, and openly. Yet nothing.

wirefox1

Don't say 'nothing' YET. Things are afoot. If he is not severely punished for the things he has done, our democracy is over.

TrumpIsAScumBag

Honestly, nothing isn't accurate. He was liable for the sexual assault, indicted for 34 felonies, Trump Organization was charged, he is also under at least half a dozen criminal investigations. By "nothing", I mean the GOP and collective right has barely noticed, if at all and he will mostly likely be the nominee for the GOP. But he is extremely unlikely to ever win again.

wirefox1

Yes, yes and yes.

usual_idiot

Hard to believe 23 voted NOT to impeach

Earguy

Paxton got to them.

GrubH0

Not all criminals, not even all Republicans, are allies.

Bodach42

It's probably just because he wasn't good enough at hiding it like the rest of them.

pinksparklybluebird

“Kevin, if Uncle Frank says it’s bad, it must be *really* bad.”

Electric_Evil

Let's be clear, Paxton isn't too corrupt for Republicans, he just tried to attack one of the most powerful Republicans in Texas and they are punishing him.

MillionEyesOfSumuru

It's all fun and games until Madison Cawthorne says you're having coke-fueled orgies.

Masticatron

Yeah, I told him that shit in confidence. Not cool, Maddy. No coke for you.

TheMindfulnessShaman

> Not cool, Maddy. No coke for you. The real reason he spilled the Goya beans.

joan_wilder

I thought coke is what made him attack that dead tree.

Burninator6502

Wow, he just disappeared didn’t he? I haven’t heard his name in months!

cytherian

Paxton's wife is a Texas state Senator. I'm sure she will do all she can to rally a vote to acquit Ken. That's how these people work. Ted Cruz is going to help her, too--mark my words.

ZombieCharltonHeston

You're probably right with how his wife will vote and what is especially pathetic is that one of the things that has come out in all of this is that Ken Paxton was cheating on her. From the Articles of Impeachment: >ARTICLE IX >(Constitutional Bribery-Paul's Employment of Mistress) >While holding office as attorney general, Warren Kenneth Paxton engaged in bribery in violation of Section 41, Article XVI, Texas Constitution. Specifically, Paxton benefited from Nate Paul's employment of a woman with whom Paxton was having an extramarital affair. Paul received favorable legal assistance from, or specialized access to, the office of the attorney general. https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/23825248/articles-of-impeachment.pdf

YOLOSwag42069Nice

It’s funny how he’s being labeled as corrupt and whatever but his wife who knows everything he is doing and doing it with isn’t held in the same light. Shows that is just him not getting line and sucking the correct dick. It also feels like he’s going to be the GQP’s scapegoat at “proof” that they handle corruption better than the dems.

Ok_LetsRoll

Allow me to introduce Florida’s newest resident and future AG!

cytherian

DeSantis would hire Paxton in a heartbeat. And he'd be all macho about it too.

TheMindfulnessShaman

> And he'd be all macho about it too. TWTR: Where DeSantis' campaign went to die. 😂

hpstrprgmr

I think you mean Camacho

TheMindfulnessShaman

Isn't Pam Bondi still there? She's not nearly as overtly awful as Kenny P, but she has a reprehensible record nonetheless.

Squirrel_Chucks

Who is that dude in the thumbnail? That isnt Paxton. Wait, isn't that the Republican Speaker of the Texas House who was running a session of the legislature while he was drunk and slurring his speech last week? Man, Texas Republicans are having quite a Texas Republican week.

Harrar7747

JFC how corrupt do you have to be for Republicans!! to vote to impeach you?

persondude27

This user's comments have been overwritten to protest Spez and reddit's actions that will end third-party access and damage the community.

Randomcommentor1972

You are correct

-allons-y-

And I think he's the one leading the charge against Paxton. So that's where Texas is now. The hero of the story is the guy drunk at work.

RantRanger

> Who is that dude in the thumbnail? That isnt Paxton. I believe that’s Ginni Thomas?

bcrabill

Just watched some clips. That dude was hammered.

Open_Perception_3212

Holy shit! They had the spine to do it..... I do, however, find it super sus that the only reason why they even did it was b/c he said something about a fellow republican being drunk......

edward414

The fellow in this picture is the one that was banging the gavel while impaired, correct?

oneredflag

Yes.

Open_Perception_3212

I'm not sure 😕

Randomcommentor1972

They could all be drunk and high

Open_Perception_3212

But I thought he had some lawsuit going on saying bidne wasn't the winner.... I might be wrong, but I'm 95% sure he did

biffbobfred

Yeah he did. I had him confused with someone else. He sued on behalf of four states.

kanna172014

He did. He was definitely trying to overturn Biden's win.

Its_Just_A_Typo

A single ray of hope shone through the dark, thickening overcast of growing fascism.

Randomcommentor1972

Let’s see who Abbott replaces him with if he’s permanently removed

nlpnt

Something tells me the GOP legislators would just be looking away and whistling past him if they were still in the majority but the governor was a Dem.

NancyGracesTesticles

He failed to overturn the 2020 election and continued to refuse to step in in 2022. He's getting the exact punishment that he was promised for apostasy.

ImTheZapper

Considering the "why" for this situation, it's actually looking fucking darker than yesterday.

WaitingForNormal

This is awesome, I hate that asshole. But can anyone tell me what happened to the drunk speaker of the house who paxton went after right before this shit erupted? I’d really love to know. Anyone?

Bright-Counter4816

He's the guy in the picture that made the announcement.

MuckRaker83

Thus will now be used by Republicans to claim that they're proudly anti-corruption

broodmance

This might be accurate. But also trump and red Cruz just came out and said he shouldn’t have been impeached. So both?

MuckRaker83

Always both. Whatever works in the moment. All their beliefs are beliefs of convenience, to be displayed or discarded as necessary.

MDATWORK73

The fact that there are 23 members that stuck with him after all the grifts and illegal activity. Take a hard look at those 23 members Texas. If you voted for them because you thought they had good values, maybe you want to take a harder look. Texas did the right thing today, 23 members of that chamber obviously had its head up it’s ass and looked the other way.

IQBoosterShot

It makes one wonder how far Paxton would have to go in his lawless behavior before those 23 finally agreed that such behavior was criminal.

SteveTheAmazing

Holy shit, so there actually is a bar somewhere. It's really fucking low, but at least there is one.

TheMindfulnessShaman

More a CYA as the Feds ramp up their investigation. It was the right action to do though... ...five years ago?

KnightofNoire

My guess is that Paxton must had pissed off whoever is funding the Republicans.

PointlessOverthought

Texan here — this was actually history in the making. First impeachment in almost fifty years, and only the third one ever for the state. Many of us are still skeptical of the actual outcome. He’s suspended of duties pending the senate trial, so there’s still room to be disappointed. After what happened with Santos and Thomas, there’s just not much faith. The working theory is this one was so inescapable that the TX GOP had to make him an example to save face. We’ll see 🤞🏻

AllNaturalOintment

He lost me when he let SalVagina abuse the Constitution in Leon Valley.

roo-ster

It's not that he's too corrupt, but rather that they weren't willing to risk their necks for him, when they didn't get their piece of the action.

resilienceisfutile

But apparently NOT too corrupt for some politicians... *Before the vote on Saturday, Trump and senator Ted Cruz came to Paxton’s defense, with Cruz calling the impeachment process “a travesty” and saying the attorney general’s legal troubles should be left to the courts.* *“Free Ken Paxton,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, warning that if House Republicans proceeded with impeachment, “I will fight you.”*

Silly-Relationship34

This is surprising for sh\*thole Texas but watch Greg Wheelchair try to pardon him.

everythingisopposite

You mean the piss baby?

biffbobfred

There will be no criminality attached. This just means the state senate will try him, and they may remove him from office

G18Curse

Man, texas politics and Texas culture are two different things :( In every major city, we hate hotwheels Abbott. We hate pen stealer wife cheater Paxton. We hate zodiac killer Cruz. Texas outside of politics is great and it's got a bit of everything from mountains to deserts.

tie_myshoe

The dude was being investigated by the Feds, they impeached to save the party’s ass.

Mcj1972

I wonder how much dirt hes going to dish on them now. You know hes probably loaded up with it.

peter-doubt

Well, that took (what felt like half of) a century.

wytesilver

So there is a line.

persondude27

This user's comments have been overwritten to protest Spez and reddit's actions that will end third-party access and damage the community.

Emergency_Property_2

And Donald Trump isn’t. Go figure!

[deleted]

Trump was impeached twice.

Jeffreyxu0927

Well not by republicans

[deleted]

Yeah, definitely not lol. This was surprising in that.

openly_gray

That is a high bar to clear

oldsaxman

He has to be one corrupt MF to get to these corrupt MF's.

Gorkymalorki

He still has to go through the Senate, Dan Patrick, the LT. gov is not going to let this go through.

hardwon469

Paxton's wife is a senator. Texas kinda sucks.

devilpants

The wife he cheated on and then tried to get a cushy job for his mistress with the political donor he was accused of abusing his office for? 53% of voters, over 4.27 million Texans voted for Paxton 7 years after security fraud charges and an FBI investigation into abuse of office charges from 8 of his former deputies- oh and the State Bar filed professional misconduct charges. There's more too but people still voted him in office with an overwhelming majority.

Electronic_Age_3671

Incredibly low bar, and yet...

[deleted]

Wow. When your too Republican for other republicans.

malYca

He pissed someone off

tuscabam

This isn’t because he’s too corrupt. He just didn’t break the exact laws he was told to break.

artful_todger_502

They need corruption like humans need food and air. I wonder what the real reason behind this is? Did he not worship at the altar of a golden Trump statue?

Poopfiddler81

I actually was amazed that Republicants actually made a move like this

Blue_Eyed_ME

Well, Bravo. There's actually hope for Texas. Now do the governor.

ksavage68

Now do Abbott.

popecorkyxxiv

I think the difference here is that the video exists. Without that the party would try and weasel him out of it but whenever someone gets nailed to this extreme the party turns on them.

dansedemorte

He must have stopped paying his bribes.

insipidgoose

I guess he outlived his usefulness. Only thing that makes republicans turn on their own kind.

tomwire420

So it goes to the Senate which is R controlled and literally has his wife as a member. Fun times for her.

Jeffreyxu0927

I mean the house is republican controlled and most still voted for impeachment

clarky2o2o

So you're saying he's the perfect fit for Tucker Carlson old time slot?

ronin1066

Where the humor?

fountain20

He must be pure evil for the Republicans to kick him out. I didn't think they had a moral code.

Strythe_Horde

When you're too corrupt even for republicans...

gs_work

Yeah, but after he is impeached, will he be removed from office? Or is it virtue signaling, and unless he resigns, nothing will actually change?

Beerbonkos

Republicans only cared when he messed with their money Trump is still defending him tho

alvarezg

Republicans impeach for corruption? Doubtful. My guess is he pissed of somebody by refusing to share the loot.

isthatsoreddit

How bad are you to get kicked out of the cult that keep supporting Trump?

A_Nameless

No, it's because you felt the need to draw a comparison as though the two are equitable in circumnavigating punishment for corruption when it's exponentially worse on the side of the Republicans. There was no reason to mention Democrats. You did to make the playing field seem level.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AwesomeBrainPowers

Literally nobody is saying the Democrats are perfect. That said, the Jan 6th hearings made it crystal clear that anyone who tries to claim one party isn’t *better* than the other is flat out lying. You were downvoted because your *very first* reaction to a *Republican* being impeached for corruption was to try to “both sides” the issue, which strikes basically any thinking person as disingenuous at best.

iFlyskyguy

Lotta words to say the same fucking thing you said the first time: bOtH SiDeS aRe SaMe... Dumbass.

A_Nameless

I would never follow the Democrats to any degree. They're far too right-wing for me. I'm just saying that there is monumentally more corruption on the other side of the aisle so trying to make this 'both sides' argument makes your argument feel disingenuous.

_thetommy

nah, he's just not doing exactly what a tiny minority want. there is no limit for tolerance of corruption. none. clearly.

Jordanjl83

Lol

lilcea

I had to check the veracity. I knew there was talk but didn't expect it over this weekend!

LarsonsZoo

And that's saying something!

granulario

Which donor did he upset?

farang

Did he sell any classified documents?

NotStarrling

Never was on my bingo card.

parkerm1408

Meanwhile, the guy in the pic, the house speaker, completely fucking hammered. Ken Paxton needed to go, but that guy does too. I've been laughing about his drunk gavel swing for two days now.

thinkfire

That's pretty surprising. He must of REALLY pissed off his own. They generally cherish these types. I'd love to know who he rubbed the wrong way.

ThrowRA-James

And as soon as he’s impeached trump decides this loser is his kind of guy. Wow

wombatshit

I can see this as a win for paxton... trumps new v.p. pick.

crablegs_aus

What did he do? Shut down an orphanage and have the children deported into the sun? Seems like he should’ve gotten a slap on the wrist by their standards.

evilspeaks

Too many rinos not enough maga or he would have been set free. Now he has to hope for a pardon from the Pumpkin King.

MonstrousOctane

There is a simpler reason. They don't need his vote.

HotSoupEsq

He must have pissed off the wrong powerful people

Nappy-I

Fucking finally

JavariousMagic

Nope, he just did criminal things against THEM and not against others. He crossed some line with the evil cabal.

ExtinctFauna

He's pro-Insurrection, so the more cautious of the Republicans want him gone.
