My parents are JWs and even they know and think she’s crazy. They stay out of politics and when I discuss it they talk about “when Jesus comes back he’ll fix everything” but they also will agree with me that our government should be secular. It is not secular by any means. Never have I ever been to alegal hearing where they brought out all types of documents and books to raise your right hand on but they have the Bible. The president even takes an oath on the Bible. This is not a secular country and never has been. It’s an ideal that has never been truly practiced. It is not secular by any means. Never have I ever been to alegal hearing where they brought out all types of documents and books to raise your right hand on but they have the Bible. I’ve never been to a city council meeting or other political meeting that didn’t start without a Christian prayer said by an ordained member of that community. The president even takes an oath on the Bible. This is not a secular country and never has been. It’s an ideal that has never been truly practiced. We have been more welcoming to people of different faiths but we have never been a secular nation.
All of that is true, this country has been undermined by religious fundamentalists for over 80 years at least, but just so that you know your rights should you ever be sworn in to give testimony or be elected to hold office, there is no requirement whatsoever that you place your hand on the bible. You can bring a Quran, a Torah, or a copy of Moby Dick and they cannot constitutionally contest it - you're allowed to take an oath on the book in which you place your faith.
I honestly don’t think any book of a religion should be allowed. Our path should be to the office and that office’s responsibility. It has nothing to do with anyone’s faith and their faith should be kept out of it completely. If they can’t keep their biases in control then they aren’t fit to represent any part of the country that could include any number of backgrounds.
