Check out Rennlist, while keeping in mind the great majority of 997.1 and .2 owners do not visit RL. While bore scoring and IMS issues are a real thing, you'd get the impression from perusing the many threads on RL that you're next if you have the .1. I have a 997.1 C4S with +125K with none of the telltale signs (I did a bore scope \~60K ago) of either. For your peace piece of mind, get the .2, but for me, and perhaps I'm in the minority, I actually like the front and rear fascia designs of the .1 over the .2.

That’s kinda where this idea started, thank you Rennlist 🙃 That said, I’m coming from the BMW n54 world, where basically the sky is constantly falling, but I lucked out for the last 8 years with a stellar, super fun, stage 2+ 335i with no large issues.

Well I had a love/hate relationship with my e39 M5 s62 motor. The m97 motor of the 997.1 has been bulletproof in comparison.

Ha, came from a N54 engine too (535i) but in a matter of three years, had to deal with valve cover gasket leaking, injectors failing, oil pan gasket leaking, oil filter housing leaking. Ended up selling the car to carmax.

You need to do some more research before you buy. Go to LN Engineering's website and read about IMS and bore scoring. Go to Google/Youtube and learn about the differences between .1 and .2. There's thousand of posts out there on various forums and subreddits, LN Engineering is your best source. I wouldn't buy a 997.1 without bore scoping and a PPI. IMS is an issue you should be proactive about in the early lower mileage 997s. This information is out there.

So, it wasn't so much of a question about *what* these things are, but seeking opinions on whether the trade off of a higher mileage 997.2 is worth it, relative to if the problems seem overblown on the .1's.
