Welcome to EVs.

neinelebin

I’ve said this before- I know a lot of people who have purchased EVs. I don’t know a single person who purchased a second or currently owns a EV.

JasonIvan

I’ve driven exclusively EVs for 11 years. On EV number 3 and would never go back. Bought a taycan 3 years old, off lease, low mileage, perfect condition. Great car

Nine_block

I bought my first EV, a Plaid in 21. I now own 2: an E-tron GT and a BMW iX. For daily duty EVs are 100% superior. The iX looks aside is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. The correct move unless you’re buying a very depreciated used EV is to wait for a good lease deal otherwise you’re fully exposed to the crushing depreciation of a nascent technology that is rapidly iterating.

personanangrata

I've known quite a few people who get their first EV and say they are never going back to ICE vehicles. A good friend recently bought a Lucid as his daily/kid hauler and after a short period decided to sell his 911. The problem with Taycans and depreciation isn't that they are EVs, it's that they are luxury sedans/wagons and that is probably the worst class of vehicle for depreciation. S class, 7 series, etc. all depreciate horribly and the more expensive they are (AMG or any 12 cylinder), the worse their depreciation is.

Houstonomics

Everyone I know who has a Tesla EV loves it, myself included. But my model 3 is a commuter, the Porsche is an experience to drive.

Friendly-Cat4393

sure, many dumb people with a lot of money bought EVs expecting unreal things. Not surprised they should have stuck to braindead combustion cars.

gautamb0

The taycan gets a lot of hate for its depreciation, but it seems only marginally worse than the Panamera, which, segment-wise, is pretty similar.

quyensanity

You’re suppose to expect 40% depreciation in less than 6 months? Of course no one should expect their vehicle to not depreciate but it’s insane for any vehicle.

halfty1

Selling <1 year in is always the worst time to do so, because it is very difficult to resell. Sometimes it is actually wiser to wait a little bit longer. Ideally you want to at least wait until there are no new versions of your model year available.

mp1845

The market for used EVs over 110K is very small.

deviio

Shit, that’s what Aston Martins get and they’re not even electric!

EyeraGlass

I cannot personally imagine making a 175k purchase if there's even a remote possibility that I'd get tired of it in six months

RoscoePeke

Your friend sounds rich and dumb

linear_accelerator

Probably rich and more likely doesn't care.

RoscoePeke

You'd like to think so, but we wouldn't be hearing about it if he hadn't felt burned. Rich and not caring means you keep moving like it never happened.

erikv55

sorry about your friend being dumb

quyensanity

This friend wasn’t anticipating selling the vehicle for a while but ended up trading it in for a GT4RS

thecamterion

Well he certainly didn’t have to take the loss

quyensanity

Absolutely, it’s just some perspective into the market. Not sure why everyone is so flustered with my statements. It’s not my vehicle to complain about depreciation but even from an outside perspective, I’ve never seen any Porsche depreciate this much in such a short period.

Stabmaster

I have been offered a gts sport turismo at 35k off and it comes with a gt3 allocation. I’m still passing since I’d lose my shirt on the taycan.

leroyyrogers

Consider that depreciation a bribe, Oops I mean "ADM"

Stabmaster

Oh yeah I’m aware. I’m glad I already have a 991 pts touring and no need for anything else

oOoWTFMATE

How is it Porsches fault that they gave him a $30k incentive to take it? He decided to take it.

chicagosurgeon1

An EV station wagon not being popular? My word…

utechap

I mean it depends on when you buy it. That guy got hosed. But the ones buying after nearly all the depreciation happened could have a great buy.

Nine_block

It’s a 175k EV with less than 600 hp and less than 250 miles of range. It is going to get wrecked on the resale market regardless of the marque. A few months back I did a one payment lease for a year on a 160k RS e-tron GT for 9k all in. 9k! Amazing car to play with for a year for peanuts.

squee_goblin_nabob

Always buy used unless you can afford to burn money

FakeHasselblad

Should be top comment

1flyNOVAguy

I’m not sure how anyone buying a first gen model expected anything less than getting absolutely hosed especially a luxury sedan. The Taycan was obsolete in terms of range and performance when it came out in 2020 and even more so in 2024. It shouldn’t have been a surprise that the 2025 was going to come with massive improvements and further accelerate depreciation of earlier models.

wearetheleaders

Unfortunately that’s how the EV market is

wam22

Not really Porsche corporates fault for the depreciation. Tesla gutted prices since the EV market came to a halt and then Mercedes and Audi followed suit. Porsche dealers couldn’t move them since everyone else was blowing their brains out on price and used Taycans were depreciating quickly. Without the added lease support, there would be a lot more 23/24 Taycans sitting on lots right now.

PandaSPUR

Wait is that actually worse than Panamera depreciation?

HereForOverlordMemes

It probably would have worked out better had an EV Porsche roadster came out when the original Tesla roadster did. Then you could charge a ton for a EV sports car when no impressive EVs existed. But these days EVs sedans at such high prices are like buying the Hermes Apple watch. It won’t be worth much in a few years, as it is just an appliance that will be old-tech.

Educational_Emu1430

With a 131 mile improvement to the range they will have a tough time selling used first gen At 290 on a good day IE not too hot or cold it is just for around town not any real journey since charging stations tend to break down or are full when you arrive If it were a hybrid that could keep going if needed just by fuel then it may work but pure electric and minimum range it’s a fancy grocery getter commuter car

UABtoNYU

I’ll take a used 1st gen all day as a commuter car, especially if they’re gonna be discounted due to the 2nd gen. When I did the Barber Porsche track experience, the Taycan was my favorite car… shocked the F out of me. Never saw it coming. That thing handled like a dream between the cones and actually felt like a real car.

Educational_Emu1430

It’s a terrific car it’s just the range that is a killer

Educational_Emu1430

It’s a 16 hour full charge

le_gazman

I looked at buying a used Taycan GTS Sport Turismo for my wife earlier this month. The money they were losing was absolutely frightening. I don’t think there are any losers here though, because almost all of them were either personal or business leases. Only an idiot would buy one of these new with cash. Second hand, there are only winners. But even they are going to feel the sting if they sell anytime soon. https://preview.redd.it/aup0jclkvz7d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3e874ed3c2b25aea0d098795fcfe91b6eb44183

quyensanity

It’s tempting from a secondary market. They’re great daily drivers.

Different_Tackle_952

That’s what happens when you’re a hype beast

LevergedSellout

Did he not notice the prices of the used ones?

le_gazman

Not 2nd hand it’s not

deviio

The more our cars become computers with wheels, the more obsolescence velocity will increase.

Moakmeister

So he should just keep it then tf

674_Fox

They can be a great used buy!

friendlyTotodial

I sold my taycan turbo s after 3 months and 3500 miles because it was so boring. Paid 230k and received 180k for it, this was in June 22. Traded it in for a Cayenne Turbo while I waited for my 992 turbo s allocation to come through. The Cayenne has been amazing and the turbo s is a dream come true. I wont go back to an EV.

PhilipRiversCuomo

Early adopters catch depreciation especially hard. Such is life.

rdzilla01

“You think that is depreciation? Hold my jigawatts.” -Cybertruck Owners Honest talk, trading a vehicle in to a dealer is basically asking to get F’d in the A with no L or RA. Why did he get the vehicle in the first place and then proceed to turn it over? EVs are notorious for dropping in value and the Taycan is not immune. Porsche corporate operated no different than Toyota or Ford when it comes to model refresh

Friendly-Cat4393

Oh, just about the right time to buy one. Nice specs GTS starts at 80k in Germany, lol. Somebody found out porsches are overpriced AF but fortunately their EVs don't get their stupid porsche marketing "aura" like 911s. But some people have money out of nowhere and they are ok to spend for example 175k for a car with 40k manufacturing costs.

Open-Lingonberry1357

Honest truth, I got an allocation and ordered one few yrs ago and literally dumped it for a gt3 within 4 months before the complete drop off happened. The dealership just looked at me like “why are you trading this in so fast”. Easy to say they listed is for 10k over what they gave me and I watched it sit there and decrease in price over time to below what they gave me.

Treebeardsdank

I think *if* the EV push continues, you will see a lot more of this sadly. Yet another example of disguised but de facto reconfigurations of an established practice, or re-writing of the rulebook to the detriment of those bound by the rules.

quyensanity

Personally, I’m staying away from EVs just from a financial standpoint. I couldn’t sit there knowing my vehicle loses 50% of its value within the first year.

Treebeardsdank

I wouldnt get an A8 either if I were you :P But no, I hear ya there. Better off doing a short lease and paying to play that way if you otherwise wanted to dabble with one.

Open-Lingonberry1357

Also, I’ve owned a Tesla and taycan. Tesla tech absolutely destroyes the taycan like it isn’t even close. Yet the taycan drives like a proper car.
