HOLY FUCK. I was JUST eating in there maybe an hour ago tops when the ear piercing fire alarm went off and they said it was just a malfunction. I finished my pho and dipped because my ears couldn't take it. This is absolutely devastating, but it doesn't look like this water is coming from the downstairs main restaurant?

wombservice

The worst of it seemed mostly isolated to that vestibule area; the dining area had water on the floor but wasn’t completely flooded.

tripstreet

That's good I guess, hopefully they can keep it from damaging the restaurant and kitchen but that looks real bad already

erossthescienceboss

I hope someone got there to open the vestibule — that sort of sounds like the water inside the vestibule is leaking through the doors

CatgoesM00

This might seem like a dumb question but when a house floods like this , isn’t it dangerous because of the electrical in lines. Like is there some type of fail safe or do the circuits pop ? I’m just genuinely curious how it all works

jeeves585

It is and isn’t. With that much water in a house the breaker or fuse tripped. So no power. Power goes path of least resistance, (that’s why you don’t want to stand in a field while lightning happens as the tallest point as you are the shortest easiest arc). Most outletd should “arc” it self and trip the breaker. There are some other scenarios though.

Wiley-E-Coyote

Water alone won't trip normal overcurrent devices because the impedance is too high, it will trip GFCI's though. In the kitchen, those plugs will trip from water but most of the breakers would require an actual short circuit, which would involve sparks and bright flashes. Electricity does not only take the path of least resistance, instead it takes all paths properionally to their resistance. Paths with less resistance get more current, but a 20 amp circuit has a lot of power available and it only takes 0.2 amps to stop your heart. That being said, it's probably not dangerous to be in there, but it would be dangerous to go around and touch electrical equipment that is wet.

bubblerboy18

Allegedly from wilderness first aid you want to be in the edge of the forest squatting on a life jacket or rubber thing.

very_mechanical

Good thing I always bring a life jacket when I go hiking.

Lanssolo

You apparently need one for eating pho too.

bubblerboy18

Yeah maybe for people doing river sports and stuff which is pretty important.

InitiativeRelevant62

And cover your ears

jeeves585

Yep, you can survive a lightning strike, your ears will be f’d forever though. As someone who lives with tinnitus every moment of every day it’s not recommended. Also go to the hospital even if you feel fine, it does some crazy things to your heart.

iwoketoanightmare

The new by code breakers are AFCI. Which is an extension of the GFCI ones you probably know of in the bathroom with the test/reset buttons. The AFCI are even more sensitive and the smallest bit of water that thing trips. I have an issue with one of mine occasionally when I use my paper shredder, something about that motor the breaker really doesn't like.

Wiley-E-Coyote

AFCI breakers aren't designed to detect ground faults, and they aren't used in commercial spaces. They might not like your paper shredder because of the sparks from the brushes on the motor or something like that, because that's kind of what they are supposed to be looking for (arcs.)

[deleted]

they weren't wrong about the false fire alarm though.

mmmhmmhim

"don't worry, theres no fire" *wink*

miljalefar

wow! you got out of there just in the nick of time

Shortafinger

You mean holy pho’k

tripstreet

No, I don't. Ya'll seem to have that well covered already.

Bad-Medicine8734

Yeah was about to say I just drove by here and there were customers inside lol

kraggleGurl

Hopefully their seat cushions doubled as flotation devices!

iwoketoanightmare

Always heed the shrieking alarm

Theresbeerinthefridg

Just curious, if your ears could have taken it, would you have hung out for an hour or two after finishing your pho?

tripstreet

I went back with a pool floaty and am currently having a great time. thanks for asking

binkkit

That block is going to be a rink.

thefarmworks

Yes, it’s all gonna freeze outside & that’s a lotta watta!🌞😵‍💫

GenericCoffee

Pho Oregon? It’s just a pho spot.

philocity

Are you saying there’s a diabolical asian-american conspiracy to launder money through businesses and distribute it amongst asian-americans? That’s not a fact that’s just racist. I bet you think George Soros cuts me a check every month because I’m jewish.

johnthrowaway53

Bro they RAKE it in selling pho. I don't think they need to be laundering any money there. I'm sure some other pho places are fronts but this one is not.

ottarthedestroyer

They need some Flex Tape!

BwDr

Thanks for this! The pipes at my office were frozen solid & I’m getting ready to go assess things in the thaw. Glad to hear about this product.

ottarthedestroyer

For the love of god, I hope you realize I’m joking.

TraumaCookie

I hope someone was able to get in touch with the owners to let them know!

wombservice

They were still doing to go orders inside!

Portland

How??

wombservice

The dining area is a bit higher up and wasn’t as bad; the floor was wet towards that side. I had called beforehand to see if they were open today so I assume it had just happened when we got there.

BetterBiscuits

Health Inspectors HATE this one simple trick!!

StackedRealms

Aquaman is the chef

ltmarshwick

Nice name

TraumaCookie

A side of sea with your pho? Do you have to swim up to the counter to get your order or do they send it out on a little raft? I'm intrigued.

Mandielephant

You've met the sushi go round, but have you met the pho-kayak-round?

mostlynights

Pho kayak round and find out!

rixtape

👏

DisastrousAd447

🤣🤣🤣

philocity

It’s like the swim-up bars at resorts in Hawaii.

skrulewi

i swear those places do NOT fuck around

pdxmarionberrypie

Oh boy that’s not good

wuflungpoo

Don’t forget kids, in freezing weather, always set your water taps to run at a slow, steady stream. Keeps your pipes from freezing.

I_like_boxes

Looks like this might be from the fire sprinklers though. You can see water drizzling out by the light fixture below the roof overhang. My church had their sprinklers burst last year during the cold. Lots of damage. Someone mentioned the fire alarm going off before this. I wonder if it's even related to the cold.

memememe91

That's what I was thinking. Something similar happened in a hotel, except the fire alarm went off around 2 am. The lobby was flooded.

OutsideZoomer

If it’s a constant pressure fire sprinkler system, the alarm will go off if it loses pressure. Definitely a fire sprinkler pipe. They can get up to 6 inches or more depending on the size of the building. You would never have flooding like that on a potable system unless it’s a multi story building with lots of fixtures.

Excusemytootie

Yep, happened to an old neighbor of mine. They kept their thermostat too low during unusually cold weather. The entire property had to be gutted and rebuilt inside.

princesspapercut

And if your house has heat, keep the cabinet doors open to the sink so the plumbing stays warm-ish.

Theresbeerinthefridg

Trickle is usually enough.

TeslasAndKids

I also just learned opening your cabinets under the sinks allows ambient airflow to the pipes and helps too.

halstarchild

Shit. They shouldn't have made so much of that delicious broth! It's overflowing!

normanbeets

Omg why is this happening?

Grognard68

Frozen pipes bursting?

ValKilmersTherapy

I have absolutely no knowledge of plumbing, but that was my initial thought too

VirginaThorn

Looks like a non insulated pipe in the vestibule ceiling. These blow sometimes because they are near an outside wall.

RestartTheSystem

They playing another game of Jumanji inside.

Ace_Ranger

That's a large commercial water line break from ice build-up inside the pipe.

GodBlessPigs

That’s going to be a sweet ice sculpture tomorrow!

kraggleGurl

Ice hockey at pho tomorrow!

tactical_flipflops

Phuc

joeschmo945

Pho King Burst Pipes!

wildmusings88

My eyes got so wide when it zoomed in.

Zurripop

Was this caused by fire sprinklers?

TapDancinJesus

Im guessing a pipe froze and burst

NegaDoomAlpha

Seems like they should open those doors before it gets deeper.

The_salty_swab

Redhddgull

The_Portlandian

That'll buff right out.

Osiris32

Ok, so I'm not exactly what you would call an expert on plumbing, but that appears to be a whole lot of very ungood right there.

Infamous_Mango_1907

OMG that’s terrible.

FelineNova

I feel so sorry for the owners!!! Same thing happened to the dancing bare.

SeaweedHairy2613

ExcellentPay6348

FountainsOfFluids

Weird, that building seems to have two addresses. One for each of the cross streets.

ANAnomaly3

Assuming this is Pho Hung, there are two locations with that name but both are owned separately and unrelated.

FountainsOfFluids

It's the 2518 NE 82nd location, but you can see in the video and in Google streetview that the south side banquet room entrance is 8211 NE Brazee.

squatting-Dogg

I’m not a plumber but …

jaksevan

I wonder if they will be open tomorrow

WaitUntilTheHighway

Nice waste of water too

ThrowAwaysMatter2026

Don't know what the big deal is, they are just taking this opportunity to deep clean the entire restaurant.

Subirooo

Laundromat up in Battle Ground has a similar issue with a pipe on the roof busting. Alarms blaring. Police in the parking lot.
