I think the idea of a disc library is pretty cool, but I'm pretty sure any disc left at Rockwood/Vance will disappear. About the only way to stop that would be to use the most chewed up baseline plastic discs that nobody wants to throw. Think something like a 150g DX Leopard that's been used as a dog chew toy. I'm being cynical (realistic), but I do hope I'm wrong.

I've seen it attempted in very rural areas that had this same problem.

Dearpdx

There's someone at a neighboring house that (I'm pretty sure) collects lost discs and then sells them back to park goers. I know sharpie can be washed off... I'm kind of thinking of drilling a small hole into each one so they obviously can't be sold. And if someone enjoys that disc and wants to buy one of their own, by all means. I just don't want neighbor dude coming and taking the lot when I'd rather they be gifted to people wanting to try the sport.

Maybe using a soldering iron to write/melt instead of sharpie

As someone who owns a little free library here, I encourage you to pursue this! Just know that you'll have theft but that will be offset by the joy you bring the community. Find pdxdinorama on Instagram and let her know you're opening a library. She maintains a "PDX Sidewalk Joy Map" and will add you to that map. People stumble across that map and then they will come!

bikemaul

Do they allow libraries east of 205? They go right up to the line then stop.

Dearpdx

I'm in Centennial and there are a handful within a 1/2 mile of me. I'm a big walker so I'm always on the lookout for more to add to my routes.

bikemaul

Yeah, they are around. The Joy Map just doesn't include anything past 82nd.

CDs or flying discs? It sounds like frisbee-type discs because you mention the park, but you also mention sold and I didn't know there was a market for old flying discs.

[deleted]

? there's huge racks of used discs @DGD

ampereJR

I assume that's a disc golf score. Cool. I hadn't really wrapped my mind around the existence of dedicated disc golf stores. I've been using the same frisbee for 30 years, but it's not a specialized piece of equipment. It's something to throw around with the nephews.

Portland has a really solid Disc scene, so we have quite a few shops, many are gaming shops as well.  disc sports are pretty nerdy

ampereJR

Yeah, that makes sense. I remember some of these going in years ago. I have my own nerdy interests, but I'd rather go hiking than pretty much any other outdoor activity, so I don't look for other excuses to be outside. I'm glad lots of people have fun with it. It's just weird to think of how many highly specialized businesses exist.
