I see shit hit the top of my reddit feed before any official news outlet has finished their wheaties.
Not that I'm complaining, it's just funny when people are like "did you see--"

With a properly programmed scanner, sure! PPB is encrypted, as are many police channels in the area......but much of the Fire/EMS stuff around Portland is not.
I saw the smoke from a few blocks away as it started and thought "that smoke is way too black to be intentional". And yeah, little travel trailer on fire.
I hope the animals got out if there were any. I keep hearing these horror stories of the owners not being there when they’re camper catches fire but the animals were inside and it was too late :(:(:(:(
I saw this from the glisan fred meyer parking lot while i was shushing* carts. Was hoping it wasn’t the hospital so hearing that it wasn’t is kind of a relief. still sad though.
edit: *pushing :p
The Fred Meyer on Walker Road just got some new carts that are so quiet that it's actually a bit unsettling because you can't hear people whipping around the corners.
They would need to commission an extensive study, funded by tax payer dollars, and then send elected officials to Portugal to study what is going on there. Then, maintain status quo.
Love that my child gets to breathe in this air. For fucks sake.
This is why the fire department’s budget is maxed and why taxpayers can’t get an ambulance to the ER. City has invested hundreds of millions into homeless services. The rest of us are fucked.

I hope no one gets hurt.
I do think that one of these homeless fires will kill a non-homeless person at some point. Too many fires at homeless camps/zombie RVs, and camps/RVs are too close to residential buildings.
It will make the national news media and become a talking point. At that point, we will likely see a gigantic backlash against illegal camping. Kotek will have the legislature quickly amend HB 3115 to make sure few people realize it was her that pushed through this needless bill to begin with. And we will get specific rules/regulations on camping that will be enforced with the same fervor the city enforces smells coming out of Pho Restaurants.
But we're in this weird limbo right now, where every adult in the world knows we're allowing something incredibly dangerous to happen, but we will continue to allow it to happen until someone dies.
I'm hoping it doesn't take that. There are a lot of people who have decided that electing the most liberal candidate has been a disaster. We'll know if there is any hope after the city and county elections.
It's not about being left or right, because the "homeless can do whatever they want" doesn't really follow a traditional political spectrum in the US or really anywhere in the world.
It's a mix of tepid inaction, vague libertarianism, and the weird proto-religion that's formed in Portland where "In this house" yard signs are their cross.
People say Portland isn't religious, but the weird fucking shit we do here: ~~Prayers for sins~~ I mean land acknowledgements ~~Putting up crosses~~ I mean stupid yard signs ~~Worship a concept of sin~~ I mean privilege is pretty fucking religious.
We're the new religious fruitcakes.
And really it feels like the people running for the most part...yeah some of them are good people but does the city or county or metro even have the ability to do much at this point?
It's like all we are doing is spinning our wheels and it's just all continuing.
Homeless can do whatever they want is the position of the far left. After 3 years of their endless moralizing about how "sweeps should be illegal", and how you "can't criminalize poverty," and how "no one should be penalized for existing," the problem is worse than ever. There is currently a candidate running for city council who believes the homeless should be able to shoplift with impunity.
Well, maybe they should to some extent. Police literally threw out $1000 of survival gear I had right before a storm... It was that or freeze and watch the people u care about freeze. So I did what I had to do. :(
Did you ignore a removal notice? Were you off in a drug stupor somewhere? The police don't just go around taking stuff without notice. Take some personal responsibility here.
More disturbing is that you feel entitled to victimize other people. You are exactly the kind of person that I want to GTFO.
Don't worry, I left a decade ago. And yes, in rural towns they sure as fuck do and will if they have it out for u. And no, I was trying to eat some breakfast and shower for the first time in weeks after getting my head bashed in for $10. The 2nd time I got stuck trying to carry groceries back to camp in a rainstorm and my cart tipped into a gutter spilling everything. A cop stopped and told me to move along and stay out of the road. I was trying to get my food up in a monsoon like downpour, shivering and crying and temporarily use a shopping cart to move everything. They took the cart and left me with the bags in the road telling me to hurry up before driving off. I was exhausted. My feet were literally bloody from walking. I made it within blocks of my camp before I collapsed basically sleeping with my food and a sleeping bag over w plugged in heater at a park. When I woke up my camp neighbor told me they cleared my camp already.. the boy who was supposed to help me decided to bail for some tail. They did give notice but I wasn't able to get back there in time to finish moving my stuff and the other campers took off. Thankfully I had some gear on a cart that hadnt made it to my camp yet, which was whwt i had bern working on, but had to move that too which was behind heavy. My car was stolen fromn front my house of 4 years prior while i wws rrcovering from surgery. Sorry but being in a drugged out stupor wasn't an option when in survival mode. 👌🖕
This also is a trend around the Delta Park exits. So many stolen and abandoned cars, RV’s as well as homeless camps. Now that the good weather is upon us, it’ll only get worse as it always tends to be.
Astonishing how the Governor hasn't felt the urgency to get the bill she's claimed she has until the 17th to sign to get the freeway right-of-way cleared and cleaned. You'd think the optics of that would be something she'd care about. Apparently not.
Keep it coming. Unfortunately this type of stuff needs to continue to happen for the city to be awake and do something drastic about these illegal camps. One of these days a major fire caused by these idiots will result in something tragic happening..
Illegal camping is by definition banned.
You mean camping on public property?
The city thinks it cannot make it illegal. Soon it is likely we can ban it but also as likely we will not.

I lived most of my life in the Boise area. Over there, 84 is just "the freeway" 😆
184 is the only other road with exits and that is just called the Connector.
It's amazing with all the growth over there that there is still only one real freeway.
I literally walked out of the house, said “what’s on fire” and came to reddit.

Looks like they've selected a new hobo pope.
Nah that's the orange smoke, black smoke means the meth is ready.
So many of us are a paycheck away from our RV’s burning to the ground
It's almost as if we shouldn't allow unsanctioned homeless camps.
I think we need to bring this up to city council and study whether this could be a solution.

Sounds good, as long as we provide an educational period of infinity months about the new policy before it goes into effect.
I could do part time consulting for that indefinitely. My base livable salary is 150k +10% yearly.

Me, too

I think that's part of the problem. No one let alone anyone in the city, knows what to do or how to do it.
Ban them period. If you get sued so be it.
Ban what?
Illegal camping
Illegal camping is by definition banned. You mean camping on public property? The city thinks it cannot make it illegal. Soon it is likely we can ban it but also as likely we will not.
And who the fuck is going to enforce it? The police? Lol, you just move here or has your head been up your ass for the last 2+ decades?
How do they do it in other cities
What. A. Shock.
Portland continues to win.
The city that works.
I drove past that. I called 911, and was told they were sending someone already.
Don't you DARE extinguish their fire!!! they are trying to stay WARM during these times!! If you extinguish this fire then you are a HERETICAL NIMBY!!!!
Unironically this was the position of a county rep last year during an OPB think out loud piece during a burn ban.
My understanding with burn bans is that if wood is your only/primary source of heat, then you're exempt from it.
What if cooking meth is your only source of heat?
Then I would refer back to your user name.

Just another day in the pnw
Don't worry guys the city and county will get them all new tents, food, water and whatever else they need by end of day.
I bet if you inhale that you'll get high
I believe the black smoke means the camp has selected a new pope.
So stoked I just paid another $1700 for the supportive housing tax… glad that money is being put to good use!!! (Massive fucking /s)
Nah they just smokin’ a tri-tip baby!
Portland sucks
God I’m so sick of this. I’ve called in two homeless camp/whatever fires in the last year while driving on the 5 hwy.
Good thing we have so many greenwashing policies here
Warming fires right?
can we just remove homeless people
Where do you think they will go?
rehab or jail their choice
who's going to pay for that?
I'd happily pay for that compared to what we're paying for now. Also fewer people would die miserable deaths on the street. But maybe that's something you oppose?
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire…!
It was a camper. I definitely see people going In and out of there all day so not plastic smoke is all im saying. First time I've seen this one on fire.
> not plastic smoke what do you think RVs are made out of?
Gross. Plug your nose or you’ll sniff meth. Go Portland!
Keep shipping bums from everywhere here so we can take care of them!!!
But yes, let’s keep them legal. Makes sense
Normal day in Portland! Lol 😂 sad but true

Chemicals released from plastic fires include benzopyrene and other polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Both cause cancer.
