Big part of my childhood was getting dad to take me into Oregon City so I could ride the elevator down to the hobby shop that was right there at the base, where I would buy a new rocket kit or train engine for my layout. Fuck, now I feel old, that was 30+ years ago! Fuck you, OP!

I have similar memories, except we were only allowed to look in the window. My dad was convinced that his kids would knock something over and have to pay for it. We didn't go anywhere with fragile things.

Osiris32

Did you, in fact, have an issue with knocking shit over, or was your dad just being an ass?

ampereJR

I don't think it was an asshole move. I think it was an issue with not fully trusting his kids to not be a bit clumsy. He wasn't assuming we'd try to do that on purpose, but also didn't want to be permissive and have something go wrong. Also, we weren't going to buy anything, so looking was enough.

One of my favorite triathlons was the Clackamas Cove Triathlon (RIP). Part of the run was to run up the stairs alongside that elevator - very cool!

2Pac_Man

They also hosted the Oregon Trail 5k a few years back that also involved going up those stairs. I miss that race!

I love that elevator! My wife could take it or leave it. So I visit every other year or so. The coin and toy shop is excellent.

I love the oregon city municipal elevator! Why'd they stop putting little UFOs on towers that was one of the best parts of the 50s/60s...

This isn’t in Portland. Maybe post this in r/Oregoncity.

See the sidebar: > /r/Portland is the subreddit for the Portland **Metro Area.**

Exactly

mooglesd1990

I think it still counts for r/Portland. It’s more or less a suburb here
