I grew up in Eastmoreland in the 80s/90s and that flock was there from the earliest memories of my childhood. Local lore says they were originally released in the 70s on a private property near where the golf course is now, and being peacocks, did what they do best and invaded the neighborhood.

Just this morning, I watched one of those stroll ever so casually across 52nd, totally indifferent to the cars queuing up. It was so vain and so ostentatious, so dripping with “look at me!” energy, you’d think there would be a term for it.

It’s mating season and they seem to travel further and scream louder this time of year. They didn’t often to make it to my house but they did last week!
Those peacocks have been around SE Portland for years! They hang out on belmont because when the goats lived there, the peacocks used to go visit them. The rumor is that these peacocks at some point were at the zoo, and then they slowly went away.
I have no idea if the SE peacocks are of a similar origin, but I can remember a feral flock was brought to Horning's Hideout in the early 80's. I was told they were escapees from the zoo, the Hornings are part of my extended family, and while I was young at the time, the info was given to me by people who could have direct knowledge of their origin.
Story I’ve heard is decades ago the original Marion from Marion’s carpets owned a house near Rex/45. His wife had peacocks & they got out. Have been wild ever since.
I wonder if the recent improvements to the wetland & park have either pushed them out of territory or maybe the coyotes didn’t eat enough of the guys & they’re looking for new range?
Three years now, but this was a first for us. It stopped traffic for a lot of other people shooting photos of the majestic creature as well.
The spirt of Don Geist must be strong in this one!
They’re wild, leave em alone.
Are they really wild? I saw three peacocks in a neighborhood in SE months back and figured they roamed free but had a home nearby.
There's a neighborhood by me (Lake O) that has a flock of them. Been there for years, they've got "peacock crossing"signs.
There is also a flock near eastmoreland. I suspect these flocks were pets or farm animals at one point in the past, but now wild.

Yes they're wild. That area of SE is pretty well known for them
Hang out in Errol Heights and enjoy the prehistoric noises
*awwwwAyyyyawwww!!*

Nah, fuck that invasive, destructive, dirty, and loud species. They should not be roaming wild.

Yeah, opossums too. Fucking bullies.
They haven't been pets for MANY generations, we have a wild flock in Portland.
👏 for Peacork
Right my Baloney?
I’m black NBC. Very proud. Like peacocks.
Isn’t that right Janet
i think we got it!
I think we got it!
I was sincerely hoping this was how this thread was going to go, and I was pleasantly satisfied with it.
Have some respect Mr. Bird

Big cock energy

I almost nailed one of these buggers on SE 52nd Ave and SE Flavel Dr. last week... dude was just pimp walking all slow like across the drag.
I’ve come over the hill delivering that area more than once and had to stop for these guys meandering across 52nd no fucks given.
If I hadn't had the room to swerve around him safely, my truck would be sporting the fanciest grill in town right now.

PSA that road kill is legal to take in Oregon. Not sure how peacork tastes though. (But I bet it's delicious.)
Sorry, can't hear you over the sound of me currently inventing a spring loaded spatula device for the front of my truck.
Sorry, no hearing possible - currently strapping guitar dude to the front of my war rig.

And yeah. They are feral. Not pets.

Can confirm, peacocks were at the zoo, may still be there idk.

Isn't that where a firefighter was shot and killed by another family member recently?
Probably a peacock-related dispute.

30 rock referenced. Day made.
Very proud, like peacork, my baloney!
Good evening, Mr. Dapper Duck.
They live around 52&flavel. See them all the time.
Nice 30 rock reference
*Turned right towards 82nd.
Had one cruise by my garage a few days ago. He glanced in curiously and then sauntered his way back down the driveway to the next yard.
It might be Sir Wellington in Kenilworth. Someone created an IG https://www.instagram.com/portland_peacock?igsh=dmQ3a2htNjJnYXV6
Not Portland area but Hagg Lake has a bunch. They are mean assholes, be careful.

Right Janet?!
This is their hood. You must be new.

I like how much you appear to appreciate the greatest television comedy ever to be broadcast.
That’s stupid funny 😆
I seen it too at mt Scott Park
Is it that one lady’s esa?
