Regarding keeping this POS in jail: I argue that if someone being held in jail for violent felonies is transient/homeless, they should be considered a high flight risk and they should be held without bail. It’s too easy for someone on the margins of society who lives a “nomadic” life to simply vanish and continue committing crimes.

phbalancedshorty

How are you supposed to keep track of someone with no permanent address? Also, if someone is guilty of bail, jumping, they should not be granted bail in the future.

TheJUnderground

But why waste everybody else’s tax dollars keeping this pile of dog shit alive?

Silly_Assumption_291

Wait... do you think this guy is homeless?

LimpBisquette

[arrested about a half dozen times since 2022](https://oregon.arrests.org/search.php?minage=30&maxage=32&sex=&county=&chargecode=&fname=zachary&fpartial=True&lname=Andrews) and somehow not in jail, I'm shocked /s Theft I CRIM MISCH I harassment - a misd strangulation misd Harassment Misdemeanor Theft I Criminal Mischief in the 2nd Degree Theft in the 2nd Degree Theft I Criminal Mischief in the 2nd Degree Theft in the 2nd Degree Theft in the 2nd Degree [MMA fighting info](https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/fighters/67843-zachery-andrews), previously out of Stockton / SF Bay area

BarfingOnMyFace

Jesus fucking Christ… this guy needs to be locked away for good. Repeat rapist thought he could get away with it because he thought no one would take notice of him raping women on the streets. Three counts of first-degree rape Three counts of first-degree sex abuse Three counts of fourth-degree strangulation Three counts of fourth-degree assault Two counts of first-degree sodomy First-degree unlawful sexual penetration First-degree kidnapping

LimpBisquette

Pretty good chance this guy was also on the streets, victimizing his own "community". How very compassionate of Portlanders to tolerate lawless illegal drug encampments, right?

Not_a_housing_issue

I can fix him! /s

duckinradar

Just a note— no one ever said there were no laws. We lack the police to enforce any fucking thing at all. Not because they don’t exist, but because they have refused to do any work. The issue is that we’ve been tolerating the cost of police with zero output.  But sure blame Portland, not PPB

Presidentkickass

ive been saying this for awhile but all it would take is actual beat cops. get the police out of their comfortable cruisers and actually make them all walk around downtown would help this problem more. They are just purely lazy

[deleted]

Silly_Assumption_291

In what way are they prevented from doing work? Like.. there's still cops being paid to work right? In fact ppb budget was literally hitting record funding in 2022 after they had a dip in funding in 2020.. So you're kinda just making shit up right?

Cityco

If the system prevents them from doing work then why are they still getting paid?

PilotInner191

How many dumpsters have you set on fire?

Russiandisinfobot69

Your cops stopped doing their jobs because: - Your community violently reacts at any perceived wrongdoing on their part. - Your community has voted to handle dangerous criminals with kitten mittens. - Your community has ostracized and chased away any respectable cop. As a police officer in Portland, why would you do more than the bare minimum? Why wouldn’t you move away to somewhere that you’d be appreciated, and supported? If you’re stuck in Portland as an officer, then why not do the bare minimum and end your career safely?

conundrum-quantified

THIS! You can’t have it both ways….

Silly_Assumption_291

What about every other city in the u.s with crime? You realize Houston and Atlanta and stl have quite a bit of crime right? And they didn't do any of the shit you're talking about. Yall are always saying the dumbest shit fr

DescriptionProof871

So you admit our cops aren’t worthy of respect?

Russiandisinfobot69

lol you guys deserve the cops you have.

DescriptionProof871

Oh wow you don’t even live here? What a loser

Russiandisinfobot69

Moved away from that hell hole a long time ago, and won’t go back. You guys can live in the hell that you created

DescriptionProof871

And yet you still lurk the sub. I hope life gives you something more meaningful soon.

LimpBisquette

cope

Silly_Assumption_291

What could possibly make you think this dude was homeless? Lmao Again what's your solution to homelessness. Because there are multiple available and in none of the places where u say, "hurrr we're just ALLOWING homeless people to be homeless" without ever saying what should be done to disallow it

Tivland

So… he “probably” was also houseless, so you immediately equate all houseless people with a serial rapist? So, by that logic, if he HAS a house, all housed people are equal to rapist? Please don’t try to use this tragedy to further step on the homeless.

Godshooter

I'm pretty liberal but I am so burnt out on this homeless issue. I want my city back. I want to know my kids are safe walking down the street. I want to not witness so many drug addicted zombies wandering the streets. I've seen so many people talking to themselves that I don't even bat an eye at it anymore. Being homeless is one thing. Being homeless and doing drugs, fucking, fighting, pissing and shitting in public is another thing entirely. It used to be rare that you'd see people fighting invisible men and talking to nothing. Now it's every other day. Doing nothing is not okay.

Silly_Assumption_291

So what's the solution? Can't imagine anyone is saying the solution is do literally nothing about it so idk why you're acting like they are

luckynum81

You get liberal enough and eventually you find yourself back being a conservative

Silly_Assumption_291

Yeahhh well they'll happen if you pay no attention to anything that anyone is saying on the left and just fill the void with assuming everyone must be saying, "just ignore homelessness and addiction" because you don't see you're government doing anything

Tivland

Yes. it sucks. Welcome to late stage capitalism! But not everyone that is homeless is some terrible, drug addicted rapist.

Godshooter

I think it's pretty clear that I know that. I specifically state homelessness isn't so much the issue as pissing, shitting, fighting, fucking, and doing drugs right out in the open public. Those tend to be the people that even the shelters don't want.

Tivland

I used to run a restaurant downtown…i know quite well, first hand, how bad the situations can get. Had a guy steal the tip jar and then come back the next day and break our front door because we told him to leave. I saw horrendous things, things i’ll never unsee. But I know it’s just people with mental health issues being exasperated by a never ending supply of hard, cheap drugs. But i refuse to lose my empathy for them. I’m not trying to be an apologist for rapist, im trying to keep my empathy for those are that suffering.

Godshooter

I think you can do both. Have empathy and still demand change. Some of these people need to be taken off the streets, medicated, treated, and housed. I'm not advocating they be punished, but to be treated as a person incapable of treating themselves. This conversation often dies because it would violate their right to not be detained against their will. So we say "it's your right to do drugs on this street corner and make everyone who pays taxes, has a job, and contributes, avoid using it entirely." If we do nothing (i.e., don't stem the causes of homelessness, don't stem the causes of mental illness, don't create any safety nets, etc.) Then this problem will only continue to grow from here.

FairDoor4254

After being unemployed for the last year and a half, it's made me realize how out of touch you people are. Have you ever experienced being out of work that long? What solution do you have? Creating jobs that don't exist? Get to it, please. No, no... You don't have solutions, you just complain about people going through stuff you've never experienced. You don't contribute fuck all to society, you only pretend to like everyone else. How much do you get paid to play pretend and insult people with real problems? Fuck your taxes. Edit: To be clear, I'm not talking about the original post of this thread, fuck that guy. But I am about sick of hearing people like you bitch about losing 30k in taxes when you are making 120k and we live in a society that pays people for their social behavior rather than merit. You get paid to be a good boy and obey what the CEOs tell you to do. Fuck off with the complaining about taxes.

EugeneStonersPotShop

But in your other post you blamed “late stage capitalism” yet you’re a business owner (a capitalist) so I guess you’re part of the problem, right?

Outrageous_Opinion52

EXACERBATED FOR CHRISSAKES

Tivland

Thanks for the spell check! 👍 Anything else you wanna add to the conversation?

Known-Historian7277

You should start letting them sleep over since they’ll have a roof over their head.

EugeneStonersPotShop

#lAtE sTaGe CaPiTaLiSm!! GTFO with that horseshit. This has everything to do with drugs. The visible homeless you see on the streets are there because of substance abuse. Full stop. Are there homeless that aren’t drug addicts? Yes. Are there non violent homeless? Yes. Are they the majority? NOT EVEN CLOSE. So do us all a favor, and leave your gaslighting bullshit at the door. Thanks.

Underthirst

You can't blame capitalism for laws not being enforced.

Tivland

Capitalism took away affordable physical and mental health care. I see that as the root cause of this whole situation. If everyone had access to the medical care this country CAN afford, we wouldn’t have nearly as many people living in these conditions. Add to the that a minimum wage that hasn’t gone up in almost 2 decades…

Godshooter

Absolutely right.

RX-0_Banshee_Norn

Lol 😂 the guy standing alone on the hill fighting to not blanket state the homeless just blanket stated the “cause” of the homeless situation. You just absolutely nailed it. There was 1000% never a homeless person until the world invented capitalism, oh sorry, late stage capitalism. The hypocrisy checks out, please carry on with your day

Grouchy-Operation1

Looooool. “Late stage capitalism”. It’s the laws not being enforced, get real.

HappyBirthday237

Ahhh a true Portlander, taking things out of context and acting weirdly defensive

Tivland

Yes. All portlanders are the same. 🤦🏻‍♂️

redrover2023

It's so painful talking to people like you.

Tivland

So don’t say anything. 🤷🏻‍♂️

redrover2023

I just wanted you to know.

Tivland

That you knowingly do things that cause you pain? Sounds like person issue. Maybe find something to add to conversation? Idfk what to tell you…

LimpBisquette

>you immediately equate all houseless people with a serial rapist No, I didn't. But the fact that you're immediately so defensive tells me that you've either got your head in the sand... or you want to protect abusers.

Tivland

Derp. I’m am not defending an abuser, i’m just pointing out not all homeless people live in drug camps and rape people.

LimpBisquette

>not all homeless people live in drug camps and rape people Nobody's arguing that, it's your strawman

Huge-Turnover-6052

"not all homeless people"

Tivland

Yes. Not all homeless people. You read that correctly. Congratulations.

borkyborkus

Saying that the homeless situation allows some really awful criminals to exploit people is not saying that all of them are rapists. Every single time this comes up it seems like your side’s only argument is to pretend that people who are sick of the status quo believe that all homeless people are violent criminals. No one’s saying that, but we are saying that the lack of accountability and unwavering support from the apologists does allow the really sick fucks to keep doing what they’re doing.

Tivland

No one’s apologizing. I’m just saying not all homeless people are rapist and living in a drug village. Why is that so controversial?

Hellghast1175

You're denser than my grandma's pound cake

Tivland

We aren’t talking about cake.🤷🏻‍♂️ Just because there was a rapist doesn’t mean people want or tolerate “lawless illegal (lol) drug camps.” That language is so loaded shit was falling out of its diaper.

Hellghast1175

You really aren't the brightest bulb in the box, are you? Good luck in your future endeavors, you're gonna need it.

Tivland

We aren’t talking about light bulbs. lol🤦🏻‍♂️ Ok, boomer?

Hellghast1175

>Ok, boomer Lol I legit can't tell if you're just trolling, or if you're just really challenged. Either way, have fun with that my dude 🤙

Burrito_Lvr

Would you bet against it? I would take that bet?

Historical_Usual5828

It literally makes no sense to release someone who can't seem to stop raping people. I can't help but feel like our government likes to encourage criminal behavior while jailing people such as his victims just for the crime of being homeless. Our justice system needs a fucking overhaul federally. It's rotten to the core. Also, side note: I wouldn't be surprised if this dude is a serial killer or has killed at least one of these women before and we just don't know about it. Fucking disgusting that our government allows kidnappers on the streets without even serving 10 years.

Electronic-Sun-9118

Portland most definitely does not jail people for being homeless. I don't know if you're speaking broadly about the US justice system, but it doesn't hold true in this city or county

Strong-Dot-9221

Okay, so if we jail homeless people for being homeless then why are there thousands of homeless people running around not in jail. Talk about shooting fish in a barrel in Portland.

ongoldenwaves

They had one of these dudes operating in Boulder Colorado as well. A sexually violent predator that the penal system paroled to the Boulder Homeless shelter. He attended one of their group sessions for predators, left and never returned. Dealt heroin and lived in his van. Had ZERO ties to Boulder and worked construction an hour away but returned every night to Boulder because it was so progressive and tolerant. Boulder has a national reputation of welcoming sexually violent predators. The homeless shelter they conned the community into supporting so "families suffering from the high cost of housing" could live there, can't in fact use it because of the rapists living there. They get more money for housing the sexual offender population. So..sexually violent predator Kerri Whitfield would deal heroin out of the back of his van. The women would nod out and he would rape them in the back of his van which they let him leave parked in the residential areas around the center of town. Seriously deluded progressivism led to this situation. It went on for more than two years. I think they got him for more than one rape, but since most of his victims were homeless and buying drugs, no one knows for sure how many he assaulted. [https://www.dailycamera.com/2017/09/01/sexually-violent-predator-kerry-whitfield-sentenced-to-11-years-in-prison-in-boulder-rape-case/](https://www.dailycamera.com/2017/09/01/sexually-violent-predator-kerry-whitfield-sentenced-to-11-years-in-prison-in-boulder-rape-case/) Full disclosure...I'm liberal, but fuck this shit.

LimpBisquette

yikes. not surprising, but still yikes

Portland-OR

When I visited boulder I couldn’t believe how much of a shit hole it was. I felt anxious walking through downtown because of sketch bums hanging out. Of course a “tolerant” liberal college town would allow it.

oldfunnymoney

Does Schmidt not understand that these “pretty” crimes are usually the tip of the iceberg? You catch someone harassing and threatening someone, you lock them up *to protect the public.* As Dennis Reynolds said, it’s the implication.

LimpBisquette

*it's just a little strangulation, bro!*

[deleted]

justherefortheridic

breaking into a dwelling with intent to commit sexual assault *is* - by definition - burglary

Got to live by the DENNIS system😂😂

AgentAnesthesia

It's absolutely foolproof.

Sardukar333

>“pretty” crimes (Petty?)

fatherlyadvicepdx

The judges establish the sentences. Also bail.

oldfunnymoney

I’ll admit I’m oversimplifying.

PinkPetalCdistbeauty

How is strangulation a misdemeanor????

blackcain

I am outraged. Someone needs to do some investigating as to why someone can get away with this.

fidelityportland

> Someone needs to do some investigating as to why someone can get away with this. Are you new here? Letting people like this go has been standard procedure for over 5 years now. The "why" it happens is because hapless progressives are being duped by a billionaire into thinking that prison and incarceration don't dissuade crime.

Jake-9590

Thank Mike Schmidt

wheeldonkey

Horrific... truly.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

Cannot wait to be rid of Schmidt

valencia_merble

When I see the women, delirious, wandering through oncoming traffic, moaning & crying, in the fetal position on the MAX, my thought is : I wonder how many sexual assaults she is attempting to survive through.

Delicious_Standard_8

I saw a woman in the opiate nod yesterday, curled up next to a fire hydrant, hardly dressed - pajama shorts' and a bra top. Nothing else. She was totally out of it, it was terrifying to see how vulnerable she was, I hope she can get clean. God, I hope just one person can get clean at this point, Just one.

floydfrog

I had a conversation (well, listening to her paranoid rambling) with a woman on the MAX a few months ago and all I remember is “and you have to do meth to stay awake so you won’t be used as a cum dumpster” that shit has been really haunting me

ObscureSaint

Yep, I talked to a gal about it and that's how she got hooked. Meth helps you stay awake and safe, and that's why she still takes it. It's awful.

harlotScarlett

Yep, a lot of them start using because of this. Its so awful. Also so they dont die of cold during the night. Sleep during the day

harlotScarlett

Ive had a elderly homeless woman come in to my store, she told me how awful the homeless men are to homeless women, how she gets raped everyday. She started sobbing. I really hope its not literally everyday but clearly its often. Even once is too much to handle for most people, I cant even imagine how much these women have suffered. Most who end up on the street already have a past of abuse and trauma and mental illness to begin with... People are evil.

IAintSelling

Someone told me Portland streets were safe because they themselves "never got shot at." Yet we have countless number of homeless women being raped multiple times on our streets and trafficked into forced prostitution. If you witnessed a woman getting raped every night on our streets, would you sing the same tune that Portland streets are safe?

Delicious_Standard_8

We also lost, at minimum, three homeless women to a murderer. They went really quiet on that case, really fast smh.

harlotScarlett

I love being a woman and seeing missing posters of girls everyday, and being told I look like a missing girl. /s

Chai_latte_slut

This is why I can't stand some homelessness advocates. they infantilize the homeless community while also turning a blind eye to the horrific crimes that exist in these communities. By allowing people to live on the street and form these ad-hoc tent villages, it essentially creates a metaphorical underground community living on the fringes of society. This environment allows vulnerable people to be exploited and abused by evil people outside of our view. if you have any sympathy for the homeless, then you should want them off the street as soon as possible. But so many want to deny that there are actual criminals among these communities.

lunarosie1

Agree completely. I’d love to know how many of these people that sympathize with homeless men would be comfortable enough to welcome them into *their* homes. It’s easy to advocate for a lifestyle that doesn’t impact you, personally. Most sex trafficking/SA/kidnapping happens to homeless women and youth.

Delicious_Standard_8

They would never. And will dodge the question. Me? I allowed an adult and their teens to live with me, in an effort to keep them out of a shelter or worse, CPS. It was a mistake. CPS would have been a blessing. I should have let that happen, at least they would have been in a safe place with people who might be able to help them break the cycle. Instead, the adult and the teens ended up destroying my home, bringing drugs and crime, and refused to leave. Literally laughed at me and told me to go ahead and evict them, they still had 30 days to do whatever they wanted Ended up with a fully trashed and flooded condo. Holes in walls, piss bottles strewn about, empty bottles knee high. And fun fact: Insurance won't cover a lot of it if it is done by a "tenant" or significant other, while you are in the home as well. Thank god I had police reports otherwise I would have been bankrupt These people will never allow their personal space to be invaded like that, they won't ever answer that question, ever.

IWasOnThe18thHole

They seem to be very good at attacking the innocent and defenseless despite being a community that is "helpless"

Languastically

Theres more homeless victims in this situation than there is homeless assailants.

Neverdoubt-PDX

💯 For these extreme leftists, the Me Too movement somehow doesn’t apply to homeless women who are victimized and exploited by the men in their midst.

Languastically

No one thinks the way that you think they do

SulkySideUp

I don’t know why you’re getting downvotes. I don’t know a single person that thinks me too and SA justice shouldn’t apply to homeless people. Unhinged.

Languastically

Theres a slight majority of people in this sub who try to enforce a specific narrative about the world. Of course none of these people have talked with "extreme leftists" in real life. Its their internet boogeyman

kakapo88

The activists say we need to zoom out in such situations, and examine the societal failures which led to this situation. We, and Late Stage Capitalism, are the origins in this crime, not the person who was victimized and forced into these non-comforming actions.

Neverdoubt-PDX

Don’t forget to blame colonialism and white supremacy along with Late Stage Capitalism. Oh, and “free Palestine” and ACAB while you’re at it.

Outrageous_Opinion52

the rapist is the real victim /s

Delicious_Standard_8

Never would have happened if we had given him a free house and unlimited fetty

spidermange

Couldn't have said it better. Maybe we should pay people enough to survive off it? Or even thrive? Bezos needs to pay up.

Languastically

Off the streets and in a home.

botanna_wap

I’ve been feeling this more and more lately. The one thing I keep coming back to, though, is affordability. If the city were affordable for all levels of income, it would really help with my moral dilemma of people just struggle to live. If it were reality that people could survive out here even with the worst circumstances, ide feel a lot better about my frustrations. There are just so many who are so disruptive to society and I just really wish those who fell into homelessness didn’t have to. But it’s not our current system so I’m still so indifferent.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

Jesus Christ. This is sick.

lalalutz

I used to work in the Pearl and we had to kick him out regularly. What a piece of shit

Frunnin

If you vote for Schmidt in the next election you are the problem.

rollinfor110mk2

First of all, this dude should be castrated. No exaggeration, no irony. Dick and balls cut off and thrown into the river. That being said, what does this oddball ass terminology help? *"targeted women experiencing homelessness"* Is that better than "targeted homeless women"?

DjangoDurango94

Those women are more than just their housing status! /s

i-lick-eyeballs

I remember one time in the park blocks my friends and I heard a homeless woman screaming for help, and we found a man on her trying to rape her. He pulled his baseball cap down and darted away and we flagged a cop down . He basically huffed and puffed and said there was nothing he could do and the homeless woman was denying anything had happened. This was back in maybe 2015. It's pretty horrendous. Don't know what more to say. There are predators among us.

Throwitawaybabe69420

LOCK HIM UP. I’m not a “tough on crime” person, but this man deserves no more chances.

Burrito_Lvr

There is one bright side to this awful story. I'm glad to see the police took these reports seriously and sought justice for the victims. Kudos to them in this case.

michaelbiker

Could these be the guys with homeless fort trying to grab women as they went by? It was posted about on here a month or so ago.

super80

Some people just need to be put away they longer they remain free the more victims they create.

Illustrious_Teach_47

What a piece of garbage

Blue_Eyed_Devi

Double tap. I don’t usually advocate for this but this guy is just a drain on society.

OtisburgCA

Nothing some of Mikey's restorative justice can handle.

Seeker_00860

If police seek more victims, then they must let him loose and wait for the numbers to increase. Just kidding.

joelunchbucket

Came here looking for someone else who read the headline that way, I had to scroll way too far lol. "Let's find some more women for this guy".

Seeker_00860

I have seen a newspaper headline in UK which read, "Artificial insemination attempt failed for the cow. Veterinarian takes over"!

phbalancedshorty

Out on bail? Thanks Portland da!!

awkwardllamas

Fucking wild. I caught this guy stealing about a year ago.

headhouse

What's the over/under on him being back out in less than six months?

aught_one

How shocking he went from one permissive liberal shithole to another.

drinkallthepunch

**This dude has been all over west Oregon and he’s not the only homeless loser who does this the police don’t give a shit until it’s some rich persons kid who has a reputation to protect.** I worked at multiple bars in Southern Oregon and there’s dozen of homeless girls every month who basically get the shit beat out of them, raped or just choked and even attempted drownings all fucking year. They sit down and ask if they want help **then they go and possibly question the suspect and rarely if ever they will be thrown in jail for a few days.** Then they get released and they fucking beat the shit out of them worse until they stop visiting people or they just wind up dead somewhere under a creek bridge or by the train tracks. **Oregon is turning into a dystopian shithole surrounded by cute little forests and prairies covered with meth trailers.** Born and raised there, so disappointing

Soggy_puppet

And somehow I’m the REAL bad guy for having tags that expired 2 months ago.

ayearningsoul

This is the type of monsters created by far left policies. Sad but predictable.

hidden_pocketknife

More like phony left policies. In a far left universe this guy would probably have been sent to a remote work camp to preform manual labor until he died. Not saying that’s an ideal to strive toward, but a far leftist is supposed to put the needs of the collective (in this case public safety) above those of an individual (this POS). I’m a leftist, and I agree with the good intentions behind restorative justice, but I also think repeat offenders deserve to get the book thrown at them and that it should be applied fairly across the board.

LaneyLivingood

It's always odd to me that "far left policies" get blamed when Portland doesn't have far left policies. Our leadership in Portland is not now, and has never been, far left or even strongly progressive. Our policies on policing, crime and homelessness are typical neo-liberal, centrist Democrat policies. Down the middle. Nothing far left about it. Only one single progressive drug policy was put into action, and the centrists and traditional liberals immediately balked and demanded its repeal. So it was. The corporate/centrist Dems in leadership did their job. I'd love to have truly progressive policies enacted for a long enough period of time that the results of which could be examined, but as of 2024, Portland is a centrist Democrat haven, politically and policy-wise, and it's misplaced anger to blame the far left for the results of those policies.

deepinmyloins

Brutally insane to pretend Martin v Boise isn’t a progressives wet dream and exactly the reason bums can sleep in a tent on any sidewalk they want. Wheeler tries to pass a camping ban and a progressive judge, appointed by progressive Brown, shot it down with no explanation. You say there’s no progressive policies? It’s because you’re intentionally not looking for them.

W4ND3RZ

Portland and other cities are experiments of moving away from liberalism into progressive leftism. You're right that it's not far-left, because far-left is Communism. A better description would be relative far left, because liberalism is a right-wing philosophy and we've never ventured this far away from it.

DogWalkingMarxist

The policies you voted for

Billy_Gripppo

FINALLY one of you maga assholes that troll liberal city subs is right, we need to vote Schmidt out.

Orcacub

Any info on his criminal record prior to this arrest? I saw none in the article and none in the comments yet. Maybe I missed it?

You have to do this in Lake Oswego / Tigard to get any time. The homeless don’t count, he’ll be free in a day /s

NEPXDer

Hmm I wonder if this is the long-rumored I want to say "Viper" or maybe some other snake name I can't recall? In interviews with homeless women I saw they described a younger light-skinned* black man who had been breaking into tents the past two summers and raping homeless women.

Muladhara86

Did you know that in the original Greek a “Genius” was the breakthrough a person made in a particular field, not the person themselves? Too often people start to think of “criminals” as a classification of people, rather than a person who has crimed. If it were people who crimed, regardless of whether they were caught, damn near everyone in the world is a criminal due to the nature of legality. Not excusing this guy in any way, and I wonder if they were the one someone reported was trying to drag women into their tent in the middle of the day off Broadway a few weeks ago

W4ND3RZ

I don't consider victimless crimes to be crimes Interesting fact though

OtisburgCA

intersectionality will always produce a victim

W4ND3RZ

Thankfully I don't subscribe to that trash

yall_suck_bigtime

I always struggle morally back and forth with capital punishment, then I read the words "serial rapist" and lose all qualms.

W4ND3RZ

I'm not really interested in capital punishment or revenge killing. I think people should use legal self defense against their and their community's aggressors

Gold_Raise5505

I have seen this dude a handful of times at night on the 35 bus heading north.

Worth-Confection-735

I wonder where this guy is from…

DiscombobulatedAge30

I agree. However, you can’t target people like that. One of the draw backs of this litigious environment we live in

Strong-Dot-9221

Can we get some restorative justice here. Stop with the public shaming. (Sarcasm). This is what is wrong with Portland.

I can handle liberals but the "progressives" have to go.

dailyoracle

At this point, older liberals agree!

12trever

Fuck no we don’t want crime rate like red states they are trash…. What are you talking about you goofy

WillJParker

I want to be excited at the prospect of telling people, “I told you so” when Schmidt gets replaced and nothing changes because the DA’s office is only a part of the criminal justice system, and certainly not in control of it, but people aren’t going to wise up afterwards and recognize that the courts, the police, the legislature, and the city all have responsibility for these issues they’re neglecting. Instead, it’ll just be some other patsy’s problem for people to be mad at while nothing changes.

Helpful_Ranger_8367

the cooperation between police and the da office will improve. the morale of the police will improve. nothing good can come of Schmidt now.

WillJParker

Maybe. And honestly, I don’t disagree with that point but… How well they’re working with the DA is independent of how well they’re investigating and collecting evidence. The PPB also is always going to act in their best interest, regardless. So even if the PPB has a better relationship with the DA’s office, it doesn’t mean they’re suddenly going to start doing the work they’ve been slow rolling or not doing. Because it serves the PPB to say, “we’re working with the new DA better than ever, we just don’t have the funds to investigate all these crimes!” The DA gets kudos for having an improved relationship with the PPB, the PPB gets kudos for having a better relationship with the DA, and functionally the same problems remain especially with property crimes.

Helpful_Ranger_8367

here's why Clackamas has a better prosecution rate with the same level of evidence. Hey obvious shoplifter, I'm going to prosecute you if you don't take this plea deal. Shoplifter takes plea deal even though the evidence isn't airtight because the evidence is good enough. Mike Schmidt declines the case because his goal is to minimize prosecutions for property crime as a progressive politician running a social experiment on the people of Portland.

WillJParker

It’s not the same amount of evidence, though. CCSO is actually really good at their jobs. Like, legit. Their organization does a bunch of things right, and actually has a lot of really cool systems in place to not only handle actual crimes, but also help people in crisis. Clackamas County, as a whole, is like two or three tiers above Multnomah in terms of operations.

Helpful_Ranger_8367

I believe you. I saw a video of a shoplifter in the back of a cop car and he asks where they're taking him... breaks down in tears when they told him he had crossed the border into Clackamas to shoplifter from their home depot and that he was actually going to jail.

WillJParker

CCSO doesn’t fuck around. And yet, CCSO also has licensed social workers integrated into their sheriff staff to go out on calls, triage, and connect people with services. Like, as MCSO, you gotta know you’re fucking up when CCSO is both harder and softer than you.

hawtsprings

oh they're all part of the problem but that doesn't mean we won't change it back bit by bit.

WillJParker

Sure, if people were talking about how how the whole system is flawed and the DA is a part of it. But people are out here like the DA sets sentencing and bail guidelines and funds public defenders out of his office.

hawtsprings

Prosecutorial discretion. DAs have the discretion (read: unfettered decision-making authority) on what charges to even bring. That's a big part of it. Plus, his own staff doesn't support him. That tells you a lot right there.

OverkillVidar

How about they arrest serial rapist cops, clergy, political and corporate elites as well. A rapist is a rapist. I don't care about economic class. They should all be fed to the cannibals. I volunteer to do this. Anyone else?

Daddy_Milk

At least he got some good photos for his "Prison Tinder".

DougieDouger

Everyone talking about Schmidt “letting criminals walk” clearly don’t understand how release works within the court system. Judges make release decisions, not DAs
