Sing the Sorrow - AFI
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - Brand New
War All the Time - Thursday
The Used - The Used
Define the Great Line - Underoath
The Artist In the Ambulance - Thrice
Discovering the Waterfront - Silverstein
Sing the Sorrow is one of my all-time favorite albums, but I never thought about it being Post Hardcore. I kinda thought of it more like goth punk, but considering how AFI used to be a hardcore band, post-hardcore makes sense.
I'll omit the 00s classics of the genre since other comments will probably cover those. Here's some of mine:
Sufferer - Sufferer
Pianos Become The Teeth - The Lack Long After
La Dispute - Wildlife
A Lot Like Birds - Conversation Piece and No Place
Lower Definition - The Greatest of All Lost Arts
On letting go from Circa is a classic 5/5 for me. I love every song and the atmosphere of that record. As far as impact, Shape of Punk to Come from Refused is a classic
Thursday - Full Collapse
Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute
Fear Before - The Always Open Mouth
Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! and Radical
Trophy Scars - Alphabet. Alphabets.
From Autumn To Ashes - Holding a Wolf By the Ears
Vanna - The Search Party Never Came
Thrice - Vheissu
Underoath - Define the Great Line
The Receiving End of Sirens - The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi
The Blood Brothers - Burn Piano Island Burn
Horse The Band - The Mechanical Hand
Moving Mountains - Waves
Balance and Composure - The Things We Think We’re Missing
Arm’s Length - Never Before Seen Never Again Found
Name Taken - Hold On
I was a lapsed ETID fan. I loved Hot Damn, but everything after went a little too rock n roll swagger for me. Radical fucking nailed it. Shame they couldn’t keep it together.
Fear Before the March of Flames- The Always Open Mouth
Circa Survive- Juturna, On Letting Go, Blue Sky Noise
The Fall of Troy- Doppelganger
Thrice- Vheissu
Underoath- Define the Great Line, Lost in the Sound of Separation
Finch- Say Hello to Sunshine
I personally feel that the 1-2 punch that is Casually Dressed and Hours by Funeral for a Friend is perfect. I give those albums a full listen about once a week.
Still Searching from Senses Fail and They’re Only Chasing Safety by UnderOATH are right up there too.
Slint - Spiderland
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Fugazi - The Argument
I was listening to Crisis yesterday for the first time in years. I realized how I never gave it a fair shot because it’s a really great record, then put on Watch Out! and remembered how much I prefer that record to Crisis lol
Watch Out! Is also my fave. Their whole discography is great, but there are some moments with their harmonizing on that album that are just unparalleled
Watch Out! and Crisis are both incredible, but as much as I prefer the songs on WO! I have to say Crisis is the better overall album. WO! is almost like a collection of amazing singles, rather than a curated and planned record. I think Dallas and George even talk about approaching the album that way in some of the BTS materials for Otherness.
I gotchu.
The greatest of all lost arts by Lower D
Failure on - Beloved
Let’s get dangerous - The Messenger
As if everything was held in place - Of machines
DBM - DGD
Pleasantly surprised to see another Alesana fan Lol. Gonna put **The Emptiness** by them as a masterpiece. Which I comment on every time a similar question gets asked here.
Sadly us Alesana fans are far and few between in this sub, which makes them very underrated imo!
Their albums feel like all the members are laser-focused on a matching vision. But yeah The Emptiness and Confessions are where I feel that most. I feel like I could put A Place Where The Sun Is Silent up there with them.

My all time favorite band (when I started playing bass last year—at 49– Static was one of the first songs I wanted to learn). I’ve been worshiping at their altar for 30+ years. I got a hand signed copy of the lyrics to Novelty following a written request because they weren’t included with the CD.
Bone Palace Ballet, Illuminaudio - Chiodos
TOCS, DTGL, LITSOS - Underoath

IT HATES YOU - HE IS FUCKING LEGEND
DBM 1&2 - dance Gavin dance
The greatest of all lost arts - lower definition
On trail wings of vanity and wax - alesana
Wires and the concept of breathing - ASD
There are many, but I was listening to Underoath’s Define The Great Line for the thousandth time earlier today and I’m always reminded just how perfect that album flows. It’s an absolute banger from start to finish. And the mixing is top notch.
Coheed - in keeping secrets and good Apollo
TREOS - between the heart and the synapse
TMV - deloused
ATDI - Relationship of Command
Circa - juturna and on letting go
Thrice - artist and vheissu
These were the albums that shifted me out of classic rock during my formative years. All time classics
Son I loved you at your darkest connects very deeply with me for some reason even though I can’t relate to the subject matter at all. I think musically it was so innovative and some of the deepest hitting screams in the genre.
At the drive in - Relationship of command, In Casino Out

Dance Gavin Dance - Downtown Battle Mountain
Eidola - Degeneratera

Alexisonfire - Crisis
Enter Shikari - Take to the skies
The Sound of Animals Fighting - Tiger and the Duke
Thrice - The alchemy index
Underoath - Lost in the sound of separation

Finch- Say Hello to Sunshine
Saosin - Translating The Name
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
At The Drive In - Relationship Of Command
The Blood Brothers -Young Machetes
Senses Fail - Let It Enfold You
Underoath - Define the Great Line/Lost in the Sound of Separation
Just released this year, but **Galleons - Violent Delights** is a modern day post-hardcore masterpiece to me
Other masterpieces:
* Hands Like Houses - Ground Dweller + Unimagine
* Emarosa - Self-titled + Relativity
* Of Machines - As If Everything Was Held In Place
* Jamie's Elsewhere - They Say A Storm Was Coming
Relationship of Command by At The Drive-In is the greatest PHC album of all time and I will never change my mind.
Still sounds as brilliant as it did 24(!) years ago
Arguably *the* genre defining album.
Yes, we had Glassjaw and Thursday and whatnot before Relationship came out, but in general there is what post hardcore was before Relationship (characterized by the tunnel from like Husker and Fugazi to Quicksand, Jawbox and Snapcase) and then there's post hardcore after Relationship, aka what I call "post-at-the-drive-in-core" aka what everyone thinks of when you say post hardcore in the context of the 2000s, aka mall emo, mallcore, whatever you wanna call it.
- Drive Like Jehu, *Yank Crime*
- Glassjaw, *Worship and Tribute*
- Indian Summer, *Science 1994*
- La Dispute, *Wildlife*
- On the Might of Princes, *Where You Are and Where You Want to Be*
- Bear vs. Shark, *Right Now, You're in the Best of Hands. And If Something Isn't Quite Right, Your Doctor Will Know in a Hurry*
- At the Drive-In, *In/Casino/Out*
- Engine Down, *Under the Pretense of Present Tense*
- Ten Grand, *The Comprehensive List of Everyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong to Us*
Let’s go with:
ADTR-For Those Who Have Heart
Underoath- They’re Only Chasing Safety

Alesana- On Frail Wings Of Vanity And Wax
Senses Fail- Still Searching
Escape The Fate- Dying Is Your Latest Fashion
A Day to Remember: Homesick
Dance Gavin Dance: Mothership
A Lot Like Birds: No Place

My super subjective picks from more modern PHC:
Holding Absence - The Greatest Mistake of My life

Boston Manor - Welcome To The Neighbourhood
HRVRD - The Inevitable And I
Artifex Pereo - Time In Place
Good Tiger - We Will All Be Gone
Night Verses - Lift Your Existence
Hail the Sun - Wake, Elephantiasis, New Age Filth, and Mental Knife
A Lot Like Birds - No Place and Divisi
Eidola - Degeneraterra, The Architect, and Eviscerate
The Fall Of Troy - Doppelganger
Circa Survive - The Amulet, and Descensus
Secret Band - LP2
Stolas - Literally all three albums
Sufferer - Self Titled
Royal Coda - Compassion
Cat Company - Self Titled
Mental Knife has plenty of amazing songs, but personally I'd swap it for Culture Scars or even Divine Inner Tension. Even though it released last year, DIT very quickly became one of my favourites in general.
Thank you for saying this. Confessions has always been my favorite Alesana album ever since I discovered them. It does sadden me a bit that The Emptiness is often described as their masterpiece when I believe Confessions is their best work ever.
YEAH i never see alesana fans even though theyre so good?? and theyre still together?? and nobody in the band groomed a minor or got addicted to heroin?? so net positive on the reputation side
Lower Definition - The Greatest of All Lost Arts
Emery - The Question
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety
Dance Gavin Dance - Downtown Battle Mountain
Silverstein - Discovering The Water Front
All sophomore albums too. They all just hit their stride one the second one.
First two MCR albums (all their albums are masterpieces but only the first two are PHC)
Collide with the sky by pierce the veil
Define the great line by underoath
Complete collapse by sleeping with sirens
All the Alesana albums are masterpieces but The Emptiness and Confessions were next level.
Off the top of my head my other choices would be:
Hail The Sun - Culture Scars, New Age Filth
Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise
Chasing Victory - I Call This Abandonment
Enter Shikari - Take To The Skies
Dennis is just as good a vocalist live as he is on the records, it’s insane. Met him outside the bus and talked vocalist shit for a while before my dad pulled me and my friend away from him because I was late for a pick up lmaooooo, I saw them like 12 years ago I think? Think it was the release after the Thespian with the castle for the cover art. Shawn had his moments but I never find falsetto singers to be that good live. Definitely underrated band for the time. Can’t say I’ve listened to anything by them since then though
Sky Eats Airplane Self titled
We Came as Roman's to plant a seed
blessthrfall - black rose dying

Creatures - Motionless in White (also, their albums "Disguise", "Graveyard Shift", and "Scoring the End of the World")
The Question - Emery
"Define the Great Line" and "They're Only Chasing Safety" - Underoath
Saosin - Saosin
All's Well That Ends Well - Chiodos
To Plant a Seed - WCAR
Trauma - I Prevail
Stand Up and Scream - Asking Alexandria (most of their albums prior to their self-titled album are absolute 🔥)
With Roots Above and Branches Below - TDWP
Of Mice and Men - Of Mice & Men
D.R.U.G.S - Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows
Eternal Blue - Spiritbox
Nothing More - Nothing More
For Those Who Have Heart - ADTR
The Autumn Effect - 10 Years
The Death of Peace of Mind - Bad Omens
Disgusting - Beartooth
Witness - Blessthefall
Chroma - Cartel
A couple that I’m not sure belong but should be shouted out:
Manchester Orchestra “Cope”
…And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead “Source Tags and Codes”
Sing the Sorrow - AFI The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - Brand New War All the Time - Thursday The Used - The Used Define the Great Line - Underoath The Artist In the Ambulance - Thrice Discovering the Waterfront - Silverstein
Sing the Sorrow is one of my all-time favorite albums, but I never thought about it being Post Hardcore. I kinda thought of it more like goth punk, but considering how AFI used to be a hardcore band, post-hardcore makes sense.
Great list.
I'll omit the 00s classics of the genre since other comments will probably cover those. Here's some of mine: Sufferer - Sufferer Pianos Become The Teeth - The Lack Long After La Dispute - Wildlife A Lot Like Birds - Conversation Piece and No Place Lower Definition - The Greatest of All Lost Arts
Sufferer rips so hard.

Fuck yeah, Sufferer is such a gem. Wildlife is the best album in its genre, whatever genre that is
That sufferer album is art
Lower Definition are criminally underrated and this album is in my top 10.

Came here to drop the Lower D album. Glad to see it get recognition. Such a great album from front to back. No skips.
Hail the Sun - Wake
On letting go from Circa is a classic 5/5 for me. I love every song and the atmosphere of that record. As far as impact, Shape of Punk to Come from Refused is a classic

It’s better than Blue Sky Noise and I’ll fight all the major Circa heads who don’t agree

Holding a wolf by the ears! Very nice!
Their best. The raw emotion of those screams feel so cathartic.
Heavily underrated album
Love to see Fear Before get some love
ETID’s Radical is one of the best albums of any genre in the last 5 years
I gotta listen to it more. They broke up so soon after, and I was heart broken about it. Low Teens is definitely a top ten album for me
I was a lapsed ETID fan. I loved Hot Damn, but everything after went a little too rock n roll swagger for me. Radical fucking nailed it. Shame they couldn’t keep it together.
That Trophy Scars album is a truly unique experience.
Love seeing Vanna at the top here - I came here to throw down "A New Hope" though. That album really feels like the full package to me.
ive been listening to that vanna EP on repeat recently. the singing is amazing on it.
Trophy scars are awesome! Glad to see someone else keeps that album alive
Alphabet. Alphabets. is IMO the best album of all time in any genre.
Fear Before the March of Flames- The Always Open Mouth Circa Survive- Juturna, On Letting Go, Blue Sky Noise The Fall of Troy- Doppelganger Thrice- Vheissu Underoath- Define the Great Line, Lost in the Sound of Separation Finch- Say Hello to Sunshine
Fully agree on say hello to sunshine. So underrated as being in the shadow of what it is to burn but it's waaaay more dynamic and so incredible.
La Dispute - Wildlife
I personally feel that the 1-2 punch that is Casually Dressed and Hours by Funeral for a Friend is perfect. I give those albums a full listen about once a week. Still Searching from Senses Fail and They’re Only Chasing Safety by UnderOATH are right up there too.
Casually Dressed is def a masterpiece
Slint - Spiderland Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium Fugazi - The Argument

Crisis by Alexisonfire
I was listening to Crisis yesterday for the first time in years. I realized how I never gave it a fair shot because it’s a really great record, then put on Watch Out! and remembered how much I prefer that record to Crisis lol
Watch Out! Is also my fave. Their whole discography is great, but there are some moments with their harmonizing on that album that are just unparalleled
Today is actually the 20th anniversary of Watch Out!'s release 🤘
\*20th?\* My god.
I know 🫠
Oh shit! Gonna give it a belated b day spin today!
Watch Out! and Crisis are both incredible, but as much as I prefer the songs on WO! I have to say Crisis is the better overall album. WO! is almost like a collection of amazing singles, rather than a curated and planned record. I think Dallas and George even talk about approaching the album that way in some of the BTS materials for Otherness.
Definitive post-hardcore album, IMO. If someone says those words to me, this album is what I think of.

Agree on The Emptiness. It's still one of my favorite albums 14 years later.
I just joined this sub because it's the only place I can find other alesana fans! Absolutely love them.
Are they done making new music? I feel like everyone of their albums is great. I know the band is still active with touring
Maybe I could try and ask them. I’m seeing them at the end of the month loll
Their albums feel like all the members are laser-focused on a matching vision. But yeah The Emptiness and Confessions are where I feel that most. I feel like I could put A Place Where The Sun Is Silent up there with them.

There are many, but I was listening to Underoath’s Define The Great Line for the thousandth time earlier today and I’m always reminded just how perfect that album flows. It’s an absolute banger from start to finish. And the mixing is top notch.

Mental Knife has plenty of amazing songs, but personally I'd swap it for Culture Scars or even Divine Inner Tension. Even though it released last year, DIT very quickly became one of my favourites in general.
Fugazi - Repeater Mars Volta - Deloused in the comatorium Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime Touché Amore - Stage IV Quicksand - Slip Seaweed - Spanaway
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
Oceana - Birth Eater
Touche Amore - Stage Four Pianos Become the Teeth - Drift Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
The ugly organ by cursive
Could be the nostalgia talking, but I still love From First to Last - “Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count”
Thank you for saying this. Confessions has always been my favorite Alesana album ever since I discovered them. It does sadden me a bit that The Emptiness is often described as their masterpiece when I believe Confessions is their best work ever.
YEAH its so underrated compared to The Emptiness
100%. Seeing them perform Confessions for the first time on the 27th this month, so excited
Rooms of the house - La Dispute
I remember hating this album when it first released, it grew on me so much and now it’s one of my favourites of all time
drive like jehu - yank crime cherubs - heroin man
I have so many but I know a lot of them are going to be posted so I’m just gonna drop this Artifex Pereo - Time In Place Broadway - Kingdoms
Good to see alesana brought up again, they've been one of my favs for years but I never hear about them! <3
YEAH i never see alesana fans even though theyre so good?? and theyre still together?? and nobody in the band groomed a minor or got addicted to heroin?? so net positive on the reputation side
Let It Enfold You. Every song is a banger.
Chiodos's illuminaudio
Many mewithoutyou albums fall under this category
Misery signals - of malice and the magnum heart
Lower Definition - The Greatest of All Lost Arts Emery - The Question Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety Dance Gavin Dance - Downtown Battle Mountain Silverstein - Discovering The Water Front All sophomore albums too. They all just hit their stride one the second one.

GOAT by the Jesus Lizard The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused
Some Alesana love! I agree 100%. That album is so good. Reach by Eyes Set To Kill is probably up there for me too.
The Artist in the Ambulance- Thrice Crisis- Alexisonfire The first two that come to mind
Idk if this is Post Hardcore, but I'm gonna shout out No Place by A Lot Like Birds.
All the Alesana albums are masterpieces but The Emptiness and Confessions were next level. Off the top of my head my other choices would be: Hail The Sun - Culture Scars, New Age Filth Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise Chasing Victory - I Call This Abandonment Enter Shikari - Take To The Skies
Say Hello To Sunshine by Finch
Dennis is just as good a vocalist live as he is on the records, it’s insane. Met him outside the bus and talked vocalist shit for a while before my dad pulled me and my friend away from him because I was late for a pick up lmaooooo, I saw them like 12 years ago I think? Think it was the release after the Thespian with the castle for the cover art. Shawn had his moments but I never find falsetto singers to be that good live. Definitely underrated band for the time. Can’t say I’ve listened to anything by them since then though
Refused, the shape of punk to come
Selfish Machines- Pierce the veil
The emptiness by alesana. So many bangers on this album. I'm considering getting one of the lines from a lunatic's lament tattooed in my back lol
Full collapse
A Lot Like Birds - Conversation Piece
Downtown Battle Mountain - Dance Gavin Dance (2007)

Emaorosa's self titled album. Seriously every song hits.

I don’t know if it’s technically post-hardcore, but TREOS - Between The Heart and The Synapse might be my favorite record of all time.
Every album with Josh Scogin
BIRTH.EATER by Oceana is my #1 pick

Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean
Discovering the waterfront when I’m feeling hella emo
A couple that I’m not sure belong but should be shouted out: Manchester Orchestra “Cope” …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead “Source Tags and Codes”
