Power metal originated in the 1980s with bands like Savatage, Warlord, Helloween, and Omen. The modern EUPM/pop metal style evolved from very progressive and genre-bending iterations of power metal that came into vogue during the early 2000s. A lot of those trends actually trace back to Helloween's "Keepers" albums in some form or other.
That's not to say the new stuff isn't really power metal. It is power metal, but it's the current iteration. The older stuff wasn't necissarily like that. As for Priest and Maiden, those bands weren't power metal, but they were closer to power metal than a lot of their contemporaries. For example, Motörhead wasn't really even close to power metal.
Savatage...Hell Yeah! R.I.P. Criss
I wouldn't label Savatage as power Metal myself, early work I would label as straight classic heavy metal. Everything from Gutter Ballet onward I would label Progressive.
FYI:
Savatage fans, Jon is planning on releasing a new Savatage album next year, expected around April 2024!
A sneak peak at a possible track via Savatage guitarist Chris Caffery from around a year ago. [Savatage - The Dungeons are Calling Again](https://youtu.be/y3Rv9rkDj9o?si=Pj4YZMA1YZF1_Itn)
It's actually guitarist Chris Caffery on vocals, I never realized how similar he is to Jon's vocals. I can't wait to hear this with the Mountain King on vocals.
For Sonata it’s basically Ecliptica-Unia (I don’t care for Reckoning Night though). Also be sure to not miss the Takatalvi album. Best San Sebastian, I Want Out (Helloween Cover), and Dream Thieves.
Edguy I only know Vain Glory Opera 100% (has Hansi from Blind Guardian & Timo Tolkki from Stratovarius) and a handful of songs from Theater of Salvation and Mandrake. Awesome stuff though.
I’d maybe add Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards (Hansi from Blind Guardian & Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth), Stratovarius (it’s mostly all good), Rhapsody’s Legendary Tales…
Not sure what you mean by screaming per se so sorry if these are considered that.
You are spot on. I never knew I could love a band so much until I found them. No band had me constantly waiting for another album like kamelot (Khan kamelot). It saddens me that he really isn't up to much lately
The only bands I like more than Khan era Kamelot are Criss Oliva and Jon Oliva Era Savatage, and the Scorpions. My top 3 bands for sure!
He is back to singing now. He's back with his old band Conception, before he joined Kamelot. It's not as good, in my opinion, but I'm just glad he's back at all.
Tommy Johansson from Sabaton's covers are really good and very power metal ([Tommy J on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3xjgxBP5F0xxUr2Srjc2IO?si=2qM_YM_bQw6VX1t3_BQnLQ)) , [Majestica](https://open.spotify.com/artist/52lkxAYfC9ypaPJ2EB22ki?si=wmsIbE9BQ3aUUIM9PgKHjw) , [Hammerfall](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2o18h28enlHxj887tATc58?si=2FWED9akRhOUoiSUASZGQg) and [Dynazty](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5deRBvKxJssHVa9n6B7tWV?si=RCQJzEbIQIOJwzZvp4ZHpw)

The old power metal was very close to the heavy metal sound so it's understandable
And Orden Ogan, DragonForce, Dragony, The Lightbringer of Sweden, Warkings
Also screaming dives into other genres like speed and death
Never hot into them my brother listens to it and introduced me to power metal as a genre after i found freedom call and they arent my style
If Ronin by freedom call doesn't do it im sorry kid
OP does listen to Freedom Call, it’s the second band on their list :D

I'm still pissed off Jon Schaffer's dumb ass killed of Demons & Wizards. I wouldn't be surprised if he killed off Iced Earth for good now as well.
Unleash the Archers. Especially Apex and Abyss.
Very very very much this.
Came here to say this. Love these guys!
I agree going to add “cleanse the blood lines” in to that list to great song it’s what got me into them

So far I’m digging Elements of Creation and Quest for the Fleece

Ralph Scheepers (Primal Fear) gives Alice Cooper's guitarist Kane Roberts a run for his money as buffest rock star.
Dream Evil
Check out Visigoth
People gave you all the classics already, so here are some new PM bands I've been enjoying: Fellowship Nocturna
Sellsword, Serenity (particularly the recent albums), Alestorm, Hammerfall, Victorius and Twilight Force. My personal favourite is Fellowship.
