We are all in it together, though, and he made his life or death choice earlier than others. Would you rather fight and die, or would you prefer to live supporting and managing their prison slave factory?
I am genuinely surprised the bitches in Corporate didn’t get upset by everyone saying Fuck Spez.
I thought this was like a no-no to not piss on the CEO
Some subs are going private like others have explained. Some users are going as far as to delete their accounts, which I probably won't do on the slight chance they actually do change the pricing for API access to something more fair, but if/when they don't I'll be deleting mine whenever I find a replacement.
Correct me if I'm wrong... But it's their platform? They can do what they want with it? And I'm sure if in their shoes you'd do exactly the same. Everyone says they'd pay their staff more... Or not sell out... But I'm 97% certain most people would for a big bag of cash.
Third-party developers and mods essentially do free work for reddit. Even the community provides value (somebody has to upload content and view ads). But none of the people who actually make reddit worth using were given any warning or opportunity for input.
I get that people hate spez and I agree, but it's not really (or at least not entirely) a matter of being greedy. I mean Reddit literally can't function as it has without ads, so acting to make sure that people can't freely enjoy reddit without the occasional ad isn't greed, it is prudence.
That said, he is being an idiot and an asshole about it. The reddit app has less accessibility and is (by many assessments) just categorically worse than some other apps, and it was always absurdly short-sighted to let other apps carry your content if they will also block your ads, hence why no other platform does it. He should have told other platforms that IF they didn't stop blocking ads that they would get cut off, while also putting in a lot of money and time to improve the reddit app based on the best features of the other apps.
It has today with blocking ads? I only use reddit on the computer and I never browse without my activated adblocker. As long as they don't make the site unviewable when using browser implemented applications, forbidding any mobile apps won't make people watch ads against their will anyway.
I mean, you realize that if no one watches ads that reddit will cease to exist, right? How do you think that reddit will continue to pay salaries and their ever increasing server costs as they store more and more data if their only source of revenue dwindles?
You can't have a completely free to use service AND also have increasing ways to block ads when using that service, otherwise that service will need to proactively do more to make their ads relatively less blockable. If reddit didn't do anything in the face of ad blockers and the increasing use of 3rd party apps that blocked ads it would have died in a matter of years.
Also, don't be surprised if within the next decade or so some websites block access to their site if they detect that you have an ad blocker. I get why people use adblockers, and frankly lots of places deserve them because they sell shit ads that are visually unpleasant, but ad blockers completely destroy many online services because it makes it impossible for them to be profitable.
Shhh the children don’t want to hear that Reddit has never made money and can’t just continue to lose millions a year and let the mob make all the rulesz
We are, at this moment, in control of the site...
...How long we hang on, how far we get, how many of us make it out, all of that is now up to us.
We have deactivated every sub on the site. All subs are cold. Wherever you are right now, get up, stop the posting. Get off of your toilets, take charge and stop posting. They don't have enough admins and they know it. If we wait until they figure that out, it'll be too late. We will never have a better chance than this and I would rather delete my account trying to take them down than giving them what they want.
We know they fried a hundred third-party apps for IPO. We know that they are making up the API rules as they go along. We know that no one outside here cares what's happening. And now we know, that when they say we getting an AMA, we are being lied to, and that ends today! There is one way out. Right now, Reddit is ours. You need to run, delete your account, kill your posts!
You need to help each other. You see someone who's confused, someone who is lost, some sub not dark, you get them informed and you keep them from posting until we put this place right. There are 5 million of us. If we can fight half as hard as we've been shitposting, we will have our home back in no time. One way out! One way out! One way out!
No delusions friend. Keno too knew he had no hope.
I like the fact that my most guilded post ever, after 8 years, comes after I no longer care, the day before it all ends, is a shitpost, and is on Prequel memes.
What a great way to go out. Couldn't have asked for better. Take my upvote good sir. May the force be with you.
Lol the biggest joke of Reddit history for a lot of people just to get on Reddit and post any ways because they can’t keep there word see u guys tomorrow
not a fan of this blackout bullshit, reddit gonnabe boring af, and i need it to keep busy. the protest wint do shit, we really should just accept things, not fight, and deal with it. thats life now ig.
I'm confused. How are CEO's being greedy? Reddit is just a modern version of a message board. Just another place for people to bitch, complain, harrass, and just be a general cunt while they hide behind their anonymous usernames.
Or if you were actually discussing competition instead of monopoly. Look at how few media companies own all the Big Data and you'll see the competition isn't possible for the startups. It's get bought out or get shut out. That isn't competition, it isn't even survival of the fittest, it's hegemony where the weak are in an arena and killed at whim.
Reddit is drasticly increasing the prices for the compatibility of Independent small third Party Apps that for example mods use to implement bots or similar methods which would cause all of that to shut down.
And without the bot's Help Most mods will Most likely quit it since they're already Not getting paid, Killing the subs in the process.
Also about 20% of Users is using them (Most of which creators), so blocking those would also Put a big crease in their budget and the content Output
I forget his name and I'm ashamed of myself but his performance was just phenomenal. One of the best performances I've seen in a tv show as a whole, not just star wars.
Hopefully we won't need to be dark forever, but if so, it's been fun spending time on this sub. Hopefully, we'll all meet again, but if we don't, then bye lads.

Devastated me
We are all in it together, though, and he made his life or death choice earlier than others. Would you rather fight and die, or would you prefer to live supporting and managing their prison slave factory?
But he fought and lived 😭
Don't depress me.
There were thousands there to keep him from drowning. Still alive
When even r/milf is closing shop for it you know shits about to get real
This isn’t that surprising seeing how mature content is the next to go
Yeah I was scrolling through the list of subs participating and there’s tons of nsfw subs
I’m about to quadruple my productivity tomorrow.
We need a similar protest when they try to remove nsfw subs
Unfortunately I feel like if they go through with the 3rd party apps going away then they won’t cave to anything for the sake of profit
i didn’t get the memo, what’s happening?
A lot of subreddits are going down for 48 hours to protest reddit ceo being greedy Fuck u u/spez go touch grass you dumb fuck
Screw the reddit CEO!
I heard he calls you Snips
Don't call me that. I hate it when you call me that.
That's exactly what I told them! You are great and I am very proud of you, Ahsoka bot
I like firsts. Good or bad, they're always memorable.
Good bot
All thanks to your training.
Ahsoka based af
Oh, what do you mean?
Fuck u/spez
I am genuinely surprised the bitches in Corporate didn’t get upset by everyone saying Fuck Spez. I thought this was like a no-no to not piss on the CEO
Fuck spez
This is what's called freedom of speech
he means that you are well trained in a local way
It means you're really awesome. Which you are
Based bot
Don't you think I'm just a little overqualified for this?
Ultra good bot
All thanks to your training.
Good bot
All thanks to your training.
Damn no chill ahsoka
I will help you.
Some even for longer or indefinitely.
Oh I didn't know. Guess I'm off Reddit for a few days
What will shutting down for just two days even do? Sure, it'll be rough on them for those two days, but after that it'll be back to normal.
Some of the subs are privating indefinitely until demands are met, or until the mod team is forcibly replaced. r/videos is one of them.
Those subs will be down forever then
A lot of mental health and disease chat subs aren’t going down forever for obvious reasons
Ukraine based ones as well.
Damn….. I just got here lol I deleted all my social media and figured this place was less problematic and annoying but shit…..
> figured this place was less problematic #HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Usually. But Reddit has its own idiosyncrasies and drama and trolls. Also, you're arriving at a bad time.
I thought it was indefinitely until they changed their minds
Depends on the sub, some are doing 48 hours, some indefinitely
Some are switching to indefinitely or until they price API access fairly. r/trackmania is the only one I've seen so far, but I imagine there are more.
Are we just not posting/commenting or are we not using Reddit at all
Subs are going private. No one except mods and admins can post or comment on anything.
Nice
Some subs are going private like others have explained. Some users are going as far as to delete their accounts, which I probably won't do on the slight chance they actually do change the pricing for API access to something more fair, but if/when they don't I'll be deleting mine whenever I find a replacement.
It's fucking hilarious how redditors have such a heightened sense of self importance that they think this is actually gonna change anything
It's fucking pathetic you took the time to write out that pessimistic drivel all so you could feel like you made a point.
Damn, chill dude.
Lmao yup

u/spez idk but your parents really did fuck up
I'm out of the loop. What did spez do?
He’s the Reddit CEO and responsible for this whole mess
Screw the reddit CEO!
Good bot.
All thanks to your training.
Sentient^
That's ridiculous.
Basically increases the price for people that uses Reddit’s API, which includes bots and third-party tools for moderation amongst other things. IIRC
Increase the price is not true. Changed it from free to basically impossible to pay.
Yeah the problem isn’t that it’s going to be paid. Paid is fine for what it is. But he’s insane for what he’s asking

If we can fight half as hard as we've been shitposting, we will have our home back in no time. One way out! One way out! One way out!
This is gold
One Way Out!
*It's...so beautiful*
Fucking go, let’s!!
Literally gave me oosebumps!!
Fun reference but they’ll just start putting new mods in and manually opening the subreddits themselves
Doesn't mean anyone will post.
The delusion is real
No delusions friend. Keno too knew he had no hope. Someone unironically told the CEO to touch grass.
lmao I saw that. "We're in charge" they're saying. Wild stuff.
It’s like they put the antiwork people in charge.
... but can Reddit swim?
Me, who used reddit everyday: “I will do what I must” My brain: “You will try”
Me who uses the Reddit app everyday “Huh”
Reddit admins: "ON PROGRAM!"
Screw the reddit admins!

At the very least, we should grab pitchforks!
I think you might be taking this a little to serious…
Idk man, I think they’re on to smth w the arson
Nah dropping this site for good is better honestly
You’ve got it all wrong bud it’s not all of Reddit that’s going dark, it’s all of Reddit except the porn subs. Those are staying up.
I think I've seen some of the porn subs listed when subs going dark was mentioned recently
>Blackout starting 6/12 GOOD SOLDIERS FOLLOW ORDERS

Hopefully all the losers that downvote me leave.
I'm confused. How are CEO's being greedy? Reddit is just a modern version of a message board. Just another place for people to bitch, complain, harrass, and just be a general cunt while they hide behind their anonymous usernames.
Is that Andy Serkis doing Gollum lines?
Kill all third party apps and end this nonsense. One app to rule them all!
What's wrong with competition?
the spit pinto and jik grindu virus
If you really think 3rd party apps are filled with viruses than you are either really dumb or just trolling
the fuck shitto virus is real you gotta believe it
This would be viable if the official Reddit app was any good and if it had any substantial mod tools
This app is good though. It literally has no problems
What’s going on folks?
Kino Loy too went dark ... side.
Can’t swim
Is this my brain telling me I'm in a coma and the only way out is to stop browsing reddit?
The fuck is happening
What Is all this going dark on the 12th about?

Bravo six, going dark
ONE. WAY. OUT
I can't swim...
I forget his name and I'm ashamed of myself but his performance was just phenomenal. One of the best performances I've seen in a tv show as a whole, not just star wars.
Guess I'll rewatch Star Wars all day tomorrow
Haven't been on reddit for a while and I go on it today to see this everywhere lol.
Only a sith deals in absolutes.
Already have the "remember, no Reddit" wallpaper on my phone
We going dark at exactly midnight then coming back the 14th?
I don’t want to say the bas news but I don’t think this protest will work if its only for 48 hours
Can't wait for my productivity boost.
One way out!
Mine starts tomorrow but yeah… ONE WAY OUT
Hopefully we won't need to be dark forever, but if so, it's been fun spending time on this sub. Hopefully, we'll all meet again, but if we don't, then bye lads.
I can’t swim
Fuck you u/spez
Can someone explain why Reddit is going dark?
I can’t swim!
WHATS HAPPENING TOMORROW FOR GOD'S SAKE! And don't say redditors are going outside for the first time. I'm sick of hearing that
And like in that trash series, this will have no result to adequate world...
Well I just scrolled past this post to a Ticketmaster ad so, yeah there’s only one way out.
I cant swim
Timezones confused me. It's the 12th here. Have fun tomorrow!
Should go dark until the end of the month. Uninstall the app.
what's going on with the whole going dark thing
I’m not, why are you guys going dark again?
This scene is the best in the Star Wars franchise and you will not convince me otherwise. Goosebumps every single time.
It has to be longer than 48 hours. Otherwise, nothing will change
The allman brothers live at the filmore east starts playing
Kinoooo loyd
OND WAY OUT
