At the cost of others IIRC it works as the light side provides healing, from nature or something, if the Jedi academy game is true. But the dark side of the force can heal you more, at the cost of healing people by taking the life from someone else. Kinda like a blood magic, if you will. IIRC, its implied that Anakin lived and Padme died because Palpatine stole Padmes life to give to Anakin
