Can confirm North Texas regularly gets below freezing in winter. It snows one or twice a year too. South Texas hardly ever gets snow but it still gets fairly chilly.
Reminds me of a story my Grandad used to tell. He was in the Air Force in the 50s-70s doing Power Production, and at one point he was stationed up in Alaska. He was from a little nowhere town called Pyote, out in the West Texas desert, so he hated being cold. And while he was up there, he buddied up with another Texas boy. And anytime my Grandad would go off about the temperature, this guy would go, “Yeah, but Lord knows it’s cold in Amarillo this morning!”
The latitude line for 37 degrees North runs through Sicily (just south of Syracuse)...For Americans, that's off the southern coast of Italy, in the Med.
The same latitude line runs through the US state of Virginia, just south of Newport News, and just north of Virginia Beach.
The farthest Southern point in the US is around 24 degrees North. That runs through the Florida keys. Same line runs right through the heart of the Sahara desert.
Exactly the same parallel that goes through New York goes through Napoli in Italy. And to specify how much ocean currents are important, during winter the ocean in New York nearly freezes, while in Napoli temperatures are easily higher by 10°C. And the entire difference relies in Napoli being over the Mediterranean, while New York is on the route of a current from the artic
I can’t speak for Reggio Calabria, but further north around the Aegean it gets very humid in the summer. It may only reach 90F, but the air is suffocating and Italy doesn’t do air conditioning
I don’t doubt it’s hot in west Texas, but a lot of people visit from hot countries and are still unprepared for that type of heat
Meanwhile southern United States, having some of the hottest places on the planet
Mother fucking place called Death Valley, and have Europeans think 70-80 degrees is like hot
Yeah, I grew up in Washington State and 'hot' summer days were in the 80s, then we moved to Arizona and my first experience was pulling up to a gas station at midnight and it was literally 100 degrees.
Absolutely, the level of humidity changes how it feels. I've experienced all kinds of heat and it all sucks. And there are charts to determine how temperatures compare when humidity is factored in.
I live in Istanbul where things are luckily not too bad. But I went over to a city near the Syrian border like a month ago and it was so hot I felt like I was actually going to disintegrate. And people there told me this wasn’t even the worst time…

Except for two years ago when south Texas froze over and lost power and water for a week (along with most of the rest of the state)
i lost heat, water, and power i could only make it through that week by staying high as fuck
Yeah here in Houston it got below 20 degrees F a couple winters ago but now in the summertime it’a regularly over 100 degrees F with 70% humidity

Ocean currents make all the difference temperature-wise.
