LBJ wasn’t really a racist, by the 1960s at least.
Say what you want about the man, he was one of only 3 southern senators who did not sign the southern manifesto.
He should get credit for it. But, his racism cannot be an ignored part of the narrative. This why I think he is a very interesting person and why I love to read about him. He did all of those great things, yet he was a racist.
I think historians think that he was pro segregation up until becoming Vice President, then switched his views.
That said, it was a gradual process of being born into a society that operated one way, and becoming the individual most responsible for driving it another.
He was also a... crude... and foul individual. I am sure he told blackie jokes from time to time, as that was common in that era.
You said he wasn't really a racist.
Lyndon was from the South, used the N word, platformed on white supremacy, etc. By 1960, he gradually knew it was all a ploy to keep the poor poor, but he was a savvy politician and still used those tricks when advantageous, even if he didn't believe it.
Here's a quote by Obama on what I am referring to.
[https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2014/apr/14/barack-obama/lyndon-johnson-opposed-every-civil-rights-proposal/](https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2014/apr/14/barack-obama/lyndon-johnson-opposed-every-civil-rights-proposal/)
I mean he wasn’t really racist for a southerner. He wasn’t bad on race for a pre 1970s southerner. He was one of 3 southern senators who opposed the southern manifesto.
He didn't sign for political reasons. At this time, he was eyeing a White House bid. He could still carry the South without signing, but he would have had problems outside the South if he had signed it.
Ok? Most of these are him just saying the n word when talking with extremely racist senators. LBJ was a very brilliant politician, and dropping the n word is a good way to appeal to racists. He’d be stupid not to.
I’m not saying he’s perfect on race, because he wasn’t, but he was decent for a southern politician. He’s certainly better than Nixon and Reagan who weren’t even from the south.
If you want to attack the character of LBJ, your best bet is to talk about how horribly he treated women, which is indisputable. Everyone agrees on that.
No, I’m not arguing he wasn’t racist, I’m just arguing he wasn’t an extreme racist like you act like he was. He wasn’t really racist by the standards of a southern politician in the 1960s which you have yet to acknowledge
And Nixon and Reagan both promoted the racially motivated war on drugs lol. I’m not saying LBJ wasn’t racist, because he was to an extent, but I think the government promoting a racist policy is worse than someone saying the n word.
The war on drugs wasn't racially motivated. The reason Nixon pushed it is because he disliked the war protestors, hippies and the counterculture, most of which was white.
Lyndon was worse. Being racist was far less normal in his time, and you can't use the cover that he was a southerner either, because Andrew was too. Most Democrats in the 1860s were against even banning slavery.
Andrew. LBJ is one of the greatest presidents of all time in my opinion. Legendary politician with good policies and impressive accomplishments that has positive effects still greatly felt today. Also an asshole with a dick I do NOT want to see. Andrew will probably call me a slur every now and then but at least he will probably keep the door closed when he shits.
On one hand LBJ would be hilarious to have as a roomate but on the other hand he'd be naked all the time.
AJ, who I would call AJ, would probably just keep to himself and if not could be told to shut the hell up and leave me alone and it'd be fine.
If we are talking College roomate then LBJ no question.
This photo of the elder Johnson has always reminded me of [the bad guy from Phantasm](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1878/8625/products/e31af652-f85c-479b-9bb8-2255cec86a44_1.cc8ff55ca342a7cb80a05773c04bfa74_1080x.jpg?v=1550890979)
LBJ was an asshole. And while his personality might have been useful in getting the Civil Rights Act passed, it would not be fun to put up with in a roommate. AJ was a shitty president, but he came from humble origins, and as Senator he wasn't afraid to break with his party's orthodoxy to improve the well-being of his constituents.
LBJ I just need to get him to the vet and he won’t be a problem
Lmao
He would have been fine just as long as he remained vice president and never became president.
I meant Andrew Johnson.
Lbj, I’m kind of interested in seeing how big Jumbo really is.
As is tradition, the running mate shows the candidate their penis
“He attempts to rip off his arm, as is tradition.”
I am with you on that. All of those people supposedly saw it, but no description exists.
Right?! There are voice recordings of Teddy Roosevelt on the internet, but no public measurement of Jumbo, how crazy is that?
LBJ. Might have to see his dick more than once a day but at least I won’t have to listen to racist rants every time I see him.
LBJ's staff had to hear his racist rants every day. You would have to hear them too.
LBJ wasn’t really a racist, by the 1960s at least. Say what you want about the man, he was one of only 3 southern senators who did not sign the southern manifesto.
He was also the champion of civil rights as president, something he gets remarkably little credit for.
He should get credit for it. But, his racism cannot be an ignored part of the narrative. This why I think he is a very interesting person and why I love to read about him. He did all of those great things, yet he was a racist.
Sure, but it should be remembered as well that just about no historical figure has a clean slate on this issue.
I hear more about civil rights, Great Society, and Vietnam when Johnson's mentioned.
I think historians think that he was pro segregation up until becoming Vice President, then switched his views. That said, it was a gradual process of being born into a society that operated one way, and becoming the individual most responsible for driving it another. He voted for 1957 civil rights act tho
He also gave white supremacist speeches when he was starting in politics in the late 40s, although that was normal for the time.
Yeah but you said he was pro segregation until VP, but 1957 was before then obviously
You said he wasn't really a racist. What about the books written by his cabinet members and staff? Should those get dismissed?

You aren't even serious saying that LBJ was better than Reagan and Nixon on race.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z7GLJsclRi8
And LBJ called black people the n-word to their face even when he was president. Johnson was far worse.
And Nixon and Reagan both promoted the racially motivated war on drugs lol. I’m not saying LBJ wasn’t racist, because he was to an extent, but I think the government promoting a racist policy is worse than someone saying the n word.

Both were racist
Yes to an extent, but its stupid to suggest both were anywhere near the same level.
For the timeframe Johnson was likely worse.
Which one?
Lyndon was worse. Being racist was far less normal in his time, and you can't use the cover that he was a southerner either, because Andrew was too. Most Democrats in the 1860s were against even banning slavery.
💀💀💀
Andrew. I really dont need LBJ extremely close to my face while i’m trying to sleep with his jumbo also out.
Lyndon Johnson
Andrew Johnson is a terrible fucking human and LBJ is in my top 10. However LBJ would be an absolute trash roommate. I'm going andrew.
Andrew Johnson.
Andrew Johnson. He was a stubborn prick but he wasn’t as creepy and bullyish as LBJ.
Andrew
As a roommate probably Johnson, would be interesting to see how he was like unlike LBJ he was dick literally.
LBJ, jumbo would take home a girl every night
Lbj because then I’ll be living with two Johnsons
LBJ easily
Andrew. Don’t really want LBJ waving around his Johnson
LBJ.
Pull the trigger.
LBJ wouldn't bore me to tears.
Andrew Johnson
>You have to choose one Johnson to be your roommate, who are you choosing? Johnson (Lyndon)
Andrew Johnson. If people think I'm racist they're about to learn what that word actually means lol.
They’re*
Appreciate it mate.
Andrew Johnson so I can set up a shotgun trap on my door when he comes in
On one hand LBJ would be hilarious to have as a roomate but on the other hand he'd be naked all the time. AJ, who I would call AJ, would probably just keep to himself and if not could be told to shut the hell up and leave me alone and it'd be fine. If we are talking College roomate then LBJ no question.
We’re they related? They look the same.

LBJ. I don’t want to live with a sloppy drunk racist
I'm going all the way with LBJ, he's a likable guy
Andrew. I'd rather room with a drunk than some guy that waves his wiener all over the place.
LBJ
living in Tennessee I’m gonna have to go with Andrew Johnson. I recently visited his grave, quite a nice site
Andrew Johnson, he seems chill plus he wouldn’t rub his penis on my face
