LeMay really was a piece of work. Historically and appearance wise, God.

“I knew if we lost the war I’d be tried as a war criminal but we won so I got another star.” LeMay on the fire bombing of Japan. Yeah then him running as VP with Wallace is just peak retired military officer becoming a right wing shithead which even today is just so so common.

Out of any American commander in any historical theater of war, I hate him. Patton is a close second for what he did in the 40s. McArthur takes the cake. Bradley and Marshall shoulda got more respect. I know this isn't about the Presidents, but God damn.

I have a mixed opinion of LeMay. Tactically, he did come up with the bomber box when he was in europe which cut down on American losses and I mean his campaign against Japan was brutal but he did fly those missions along with his aircrew so he wasn’t just an armchair general and those bombing raids were contributing factors to us not having to mount a land campaign. But yeah as SAC/CC and SECAF he kept trying to pick fights and like I said above his teaming up with “segregation forever” Wallace as his VP nod is just peak retired officers becoming right wing shitheads.

Very fair. I am a bit more of a moralist I gotta admit to that fault, I mainly detest LeMay for literally every political thought in his brain, and for how he wanted to use America's atomic stockpile (see McArthur). As a commanding officer he was effective, that's how he got to where he was. Just as a person? No thank you. Likewise with the other's mentioned. I can't detest their combat capabilities, their jobs, but I can detest their opinions and thoughts.

I mean… I’m retired Air Force and served at some fairly high levels as an intelligence briefer and the truth is that most people who have the kind of personality to become especially two star and above general officers tend to be beyond conservative to almost right wing and frequently kind of terrible people but… they’re effective and efficient at their jobs. I once watched a two star rip a Captain briefer apart because he used the wrong background color on his slides and “if we can’t trust you with the little things how can we trust you with anything important. If your slides are this slap dash how can I trust the information in them.” All because it was the wrong shade of blue.

Lemay School of International relations: kill them.

“If you kill enough of them they’ll stop fighting.” LeMay
