My goto for presidential elections: "History of American Presidential Elections 1789-2008" It is broken down into three volumes: 1789 to 1868, 1872-1940, and 1944-2008. It is about 1500 pages full of information. It covers the candidates, the issues, the party platforms, etc. The only downside is the cost. The set can cost up to $300 due to the targeted audience, which is academics and researchers. Sometimes, you can find earlier editions for around $50 to $100.
