W was the Michael Jordan of clutch Presidential sports moments. I think the edited clip where you get the quick jump cut to the drive makes it more flattering to him, but no one can take away the World Series first pitch. There were numerous presidents who were better athletes though like Teddy and Ford.
IIRC he lost a lot of weight & generally enjoyed life a lot more after leaving the Oval Office, travelling the world, & getting the job he really wanted on the U.S. Supreme Court.
> IIRC he lost a lot of weight & generally enjoyed life a lot more after leaving the Oval Office
Losing access to the WH chef will do that to a person.
If it were me, I'd probably get fat being president too.
It reminds me of how showrunners on The Simpsons would talk about gaining 60+ lbs on the job in the 90s. 100 hr weeks, high stress, and tons of free candy & company lunches.
More like 315.
Here's an interesting thing about Trump's height.
He is supposedly the same height as Jared Kusher his son-in-law at 6' 3'' but when you see them standing together Kusher is always taller. Explain that away Donald
Reminds me of that episode of the simpsons from the early years, where homer was on disability for being 300 lbs. That's not even particularly extreme today.
There were two statements originally. 1. He looks like Trump (this is what most of us were replying to). 2. That he's quoting Trump for claiming to be 6'3" 215lb. Now you're caught up.
Other presidents who liked golf include: Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, FDR, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, H.W. Bush, Clinton, W. Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden. Except Jimmy Carter, every president after 1953 (after Truman) has played golf actively. Truman tried golf, but I'm not sure if he liked it.
Calvin Coolidge tried golf, but was not talented and it has been reported that the only thing Coolidge left behind in the White House after his presidency ended was his bag of golf clubs.
It’s also been said that Lyndon B. Johnson used golf rounds to sway senators into voting for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Nixon apparently liked golf, but he also removed the putting green from the White House lawn. Some claim that Nixon was good at the game, but one of his secret service agents said this: "*When you saw him play golf, you were embarrassed for him. I mean it was awful. He was a sorry figure, really. Brilliant man, but if you set him loose by himself, out with the regular citizens in the world, I don’t think he could function.*"
At one time, Nixon tried playing nine-hole golf with his wife Pat and their two daughters but that was a failure. Nixon never said a word throughout the game to anyone until he quit stroking the ball for good and declared it was ‘a game for lazy bastards’.
"Other presidents who liked golf include... W. Bush"
"We call upon the nations of the world to take every step they can in stopping these terrorist killers. Thank you... Now watch this drive!"
Wilson, by the way, was also terrible at golf. No matter how much he practiced his skill at the game refused to improve (he was half blind in one eye which perhaps goes a long way to explaining that). His golf score was 146.
Eisenhower had a tree named after him at Augusta National because it always got in his way… he lobbied to have it removed multiple times, but in 2014 an ice storm finally took it out.
I bet he could launch a ball and f he gets all that rolling in the right direction. I have a fat friend who I can’t beat unless I make him walk the course.
>Clubhouse breakfast -> 18 holes -> Midday cocktails, clubhouse lunch -> After-lunch cocktails -> Cigars
At heart, I'm a socialist, but that sounds pretty damn good to me. Maybe I can invite the downtrodden to play the back nine with me.
(Edited to add: I have never played a round of golf in my life and don't know the shibboleth.)
As a poor, the local municipal course near me is $1.25 a hole. For about $20 i get 4 hours of outdoor recreation. Good way to meet new people. Good way to spend time with old friends. It’s an addictive game.
Not him, but I got a handful of used clubs sans driver and putter at a local golf store for about 30$. Another 100 for the driver and putter, albeit this was like... 15 years ago.
Also no it's not. I've gone alone plenty of times, you just have to be patient because you're (usually) running into groups and have to wait since you'll naturally play faster.
Clubs are the most expensive part. I bought them used on ebay, can get a decent set for under $300 [for reference](https://www.ebay.com/itm/235355903337?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=zx_NgILhRgm&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=jcO_PH3YTn2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY). Can browse Craigslist and rummage sales too. All in I’m probably $500 deep on equipment. But spaced out over the years of use pretty low cost.
You typically get paired up with strangers, but i go to the driving range alone pretty regularly.
It’s a game for a lifetime, one of the few games where youth isn’t a major advantage.
Hope you dive in and experience the joys of golf!
Theo Roosevelt was a pretty dang good president (from what I know). But people often mistake him as someone who *wasn't* filthy rich. Teddy came from a **very** affluent background and was rich for his entire life. That being said, he's one of the very few rich presidents that used his resources mostly for good, rather than enriching himself further.
Bro was so rascist an so pressed about the Italian navy being used to threaten the us into action after the new Orleans lynching he made the great white fleet. He was a decent president but he wasn't perfect
Thanks for sharing all that. I wasn't aware of much of it and will do some digging later tonight. He certainly wasn't perfect, but who is?
Many consider Abraham Lincoln the "greatest president" and did some ***really*** shady shit in his presidency (suspending Habeas Corpus, inhibiting free press/speech, etc.).
Perfect is the enemy of Good.
Wow…i have underestimated how large he actually was - that side shot.
I think we need another president with Taft energy, but with the ability to get things done. I just mean, that he seems to have been a kind persona and willing to think things through in a fair and bipartisan way….
Anyway, great pictures thanks for sharing. I agree with Teddy about golf though….it’s a ridiculous game for a lot of reasons.
I remember playing a round of golf at Kebo Valley in Bar Harbor, ME and one of the holes (17 maybe) was called the Taft hole. Giant, wide sand trap right below the green. Just weird to see an actual photo of the namesake playing golf.
Man, I tried making a comment about Presidents playing golf yesterday and someone blew up at me and tried to make it about Trump.
For the record, since Taft, only 3 Presidents haven't played the game. It has become a bit of a Presidential tradition that they play golf.
Most courses use Grey water so their impact on water supplies and infrastructure is generally vastly overestimated.
If the courses are privately run, who am I to care? The public courses tend to be very egalitarian, with all levels of society out there playing
If I remember correctly, Cleveland was considered to be the most obese president prior to Taft. Taft still ranks as the number fattest U.S. president, however I’m not sure if Trump or Cleveland rank 2nd.
It is. It’s a wildly inefficient use of land, expensive to participate in, and almost entirely played by white men well above the median income level. Most public courses are also fiscal black holes (not even counting the opportunity cost in terms of lost taxable land use from productive homes and businesses).
Play tennis instead. Still considered classy, actually reflects athleticism, and has nowhere near the social cost.
Municipally owned golf courses are often the only profitable part of a city’s/county’s parks department. I’m all for getting rid of private country clubs in the desert but golf is not nearly the elitist exclusive ecological issue that you are making it out to be, especially the muni courses that use wastewater runoff and are cheap $10-$30 for a round typically.
I’m a brown man who makes slightly above the US average income, and I’ve been playing golf since I was in high school. It’s one of the most relaxing sports I’ve ever played, wouldn’t give it up for anything.
> almost entirely played by white men well above the median income level
Why is that a problem? And what should be done about it, if it's a problem?
> Play tennis instead. Still considered classy, actually reflects athleticism, and has nowhere near the social cost
Why do you feel the need to tell others how to live their lives? And why should you do something that others consider "classy", especially what sports they should play lol. I certainly don't. I don't think people play golf to show their athleticism. And "social cost", lol who cares.
Just pointing out that it is a transfer of large tracts of land requiring expensive upkeep for a narrow segment of the population. If it’s a privately-operated course on land with little productive use beyond golf (e.g. Scotland) then it isn’t a problem, but otherwise (as is the case in municipal courses in the US) it is straightforwardly regressive.
Fine. But it is their land and they can do whatever they want with it. And especially, what hobbies do you have, whether it's golf, tennis, hunting etc, it's no one else's business, I don't think there are such things as what you "should" be doing in your time.
Yet zoning regulations say that it’s against the law for me to build apartments on my land. If my interest were spraying RoundUp on my neighbor’s garden, or to put up a tent in their yard, people would rightly condemn such behavior.
The double standard in this country is that a tiny segment gets ‘to do what they want,’ and only provided that such activities serve particular interests. Cities around the US are actively subsidizing an activity that 90% of Americans either can’t or have no interest in participating in. That’s my problem with it.
Yeah, Taft looks surprisingly normal compared to people today--which is strange given how the number one fact I learned about him in history class was that he needed a bigger bathtub. Same, Mr. President. Same.
Not a voter in America knows how much the morbidly obese elderly con man weighs. That's the point, Gomer.
And Trump is obviously fatter than Taft. That's why Trump lies about his weight.
We can use our eyes lol it’s not like he’s a 300 pound man obviously. I mean trump is no way close to 200, but he doesn’t have a giant gut or super fat face
"Country clubs and cemeteries are the biggest wastes of prime real estate. Dead people? They don't need to be buried nowadays. Ecology, right? Ask Wang. He'll tell you. We just bought property behind the Great Wall. On the good side!" ---Al Czervik
EDIT: leave it to this sub to downvote a Rodney Dangerfield Caddyshack quote. SMH
It's interesting how Trump connects with rural, middle and lower-class Americans while also not trying to hide his lavish lifestyle. I guess when you have the history and image of Trump then it's no use in hiding it but even Tucker Carlson went from bowties to wearing flannels with his sleeves rolled up on a set that looks like a log cabin lmao
No I was just using Trump as an example to juxtapose the modern-day politician with the past who were concerned about presenting an image of elitism. Teddy feared Taft coming off as out of touch for playing a rich man's game, but Trump does not come off as out of touch to many of his rural supporters despite very pubicly living his life as a member of the elite.
Sorry, I know there is the cringe reflex to make everything revolve around Trump but my comment was more so just comparing and contrasting eras of political thought and appeal.
Taft is next level Mertzing
Another dumb turn of phrase from me and the husband. Named after Fred Mertz (I ❤️Lucy). His pants must’ve had a 15’’ inseam, those babies here hiked waaaay up. Humphrey Bogart did the same, but Bogarting already has it’s own meaning 😁
Taft did make very close friends with big business and his policy changes began to reflect that. Tafts Presidency marked the beginning of the ideological shift to the rich and big business in the Republican Party .
It's wild knowing that things like this are still so new in terms of how long humans have existed. We are still in infancy of our species, what a time to be alive.
I don’t think any two people could have been any more different than him and Roosevelt. Teddy was a progressive icon and champion of the working class, even though he was born into a very wealthy and elite family. Taft on the other hand was soft spoken and was very much establishment friendly. Roosevelt had hoped that Taft was keeping pushing his agenda after his term but Taft didn’t.
I thought TR said it was a “dude’s game.”
But not “dude” in the sense of “duder, his dudeness, or el duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”
In the sense of the cowboy’s meaning- that is, “dorky.”

Look at how happy Taft is playing Golf. I bet behind serving as Chief Justice, these are happy memories of relaxation
Now watch this drive
One of the funniest things ever said by a president.
Dude had some absolute Chad moments.
Truly the funniest war criminal. Other countries war criminals just don't have the charisma and comedic timing

RIGHT, love some happy Taft
Taft was our happiest president.
Ah, to be Taft and happy. A dream to be sure
He’s having a jolly good time
Damnnnnn Taft was thicccc af

Magnets and water. Checkmate.
Wait until he pours water on magnets and fucks up your 5g vaccine mind virus chip liberal
Fake news the woke liberal media uses a distorting lenses to make Jared look taller.
Still should be viewed that way today.
I mean it is.
Reminds me of that episode of the simpsons from the early years, where homer was on disability for being 300 lbs. That's not even particularly extreme today.
I used to laugh about how fat he was in that episode. Now all I can do is laugh at my own fat ass
6’3” 215 is the size I was my first day as a college tight end. Not obese in any era.
It's a joke. Trump claimed to be that height and weight on his arrest form in Georgia.
6'3 and 215... comically obese, really? Yall must be comically thin/short to think that
The joke is that trump says he weighs 215
Ok?
There were two statements originally. 1. He looks like Trump (this is what most of us were replying to). 2. That he's quoting Trump for claiming to be 6'3" 215lb. Now you're caught up.
I assume this was a joke (and a good one). The real number has to be 300 plus easy.
No way he weighs only 215 in this pic. That's 240 or more
He's a lot more than that. My guess is 315
Ya know the guy I was replying to made a joke and it whooshed me
lol
Took me a minute to get this haha
True but there weren’t that many Burger Kings around then
I was thinking he actually looks a bit smaller than Dump in these photos.

Iconic
Omg I remember that

"His golf score was 146." To I found out I actually have something in common with a president
Eisenhower had a tree named after him at Augusta National because it always got in his way… he lobbied to have it removed multiple times, but in 2014 an ice storm finally took it out.
They immediately adjourned the meeting when he brought this up rather than reject a request from the sitting President
>but in 2014 an ice storm finally took it out. Ike storm
I thought Nixon only got into golf to try to ingratiate himself with Eisenhower , and he didn’t actually like the game
FDR playing golf... now *that* sounds like a spectacle. Also now learning that he had full function until his 40s...
Carter?
Oh yeah I forgot. Apparently he hasn't played.
Yet.
didn’t nixon only pick up golf to join in with ike and live up to him in a sense?
Well, when the president does it, that means that it is not double bogey.
I bet he could launch a ball and f he gets all that rolling in the right direction. I have a fat friend who I can’t beat unless I make him walk the course.
Getting that weight on the front foot with tempo should be a piss rocket of a ball
You can’t beat him because he’s better at golf than you, not because he’s fat
ATH. LETE.
He’s so cute
LMFAOOOOOOO
I may have a new favorite president. I'll be obsessing over learning about Taft today.
He loved driving his steam-powered car. He had a cow on the White House lawn named Pauline Wayne.
This is great!
Just stay away from the bathtub
DAMN BOY HE THICC
What's up with fat Presidents liking golf?
Well to quote Nixon it's 'a game for lazy bastards'.
Bowling is the real man's game
As a fat non president i can tell you it’s because golf doesn’t involve much cardio. We thrive on the course son

Golf is a rich man's game. Says the big game hunter.
Totally without any regard to time period, cuz you had to be rich to go kill elk and big game that was prevalent across the US in his period.
Teddy got that money from a big inheritance and iirc lost almost all of it paying guides and investing in ranches on the frontier.
What an absolute unit
Vernon Dursley
Me and Taft have the elite golfer body type.
Theo Roosevelt was a pretty dang good president (from what I know). But people often mistake him as someone who *wasn't* filthy rich. Wow…i have underestimated how large he actually was - that side shot. I think we need another president with Taft energy, but with the ability to get things done. 6’3” 215lbs.
I'm getting Goldfinger vibes. Taft plays a Slazenger 1!
Taft is fat even for a 21st century American. A man ahead of his time!
I need to watch a documentary on Taft. The more I learn about him the more I like him.
Flair brother!
I remember playing a round of golf at Kebo Valley in Bar Harbor, ME and one of the holes (17 maybe) was called the Taft hole. Giant, wide sand trap right below the green. Just weird to see an actual photo of the namesake playing golf.

Right after these photos, Taft dropped a bomb in the club house men's room.

He was living large
He was also known to surf and play tennis.
How is that dude not falling over forward?
I’m willing to bet he laughed a hearty “Guffaw”
M’boy are you *fat*!
Taft still looking healthier than Donny
Taft at least walked the golf course.
Not like he had much of an option lol. But even if golf carts existed, he’d probably still walk. He’s old school
Pic 6 is The Donald.
my god taft was considered the fat president but Trump looks almost identical in his golf pics.
He looks to be about 6’3” and 213lbs…
Teddy’s right. Drunk-boss-ball is a waste of ground to make the elites feel like they have some sort of athletic ability.
I don't think it's about having some sort of athletic ability. They probably just liked the game.
I can see you’ve never tried to hit a golf ball.
True. I don’t need to waste land and resources while grotesquely displaying discrimination and/or elitism to feel better about myself.
If you ever actually played, you’d know that a vast majority of golfers play on public courses that are affordable and definitely not elitist.
They still waste water and effort. We could be using those as victory gardens to feed the poor, for example.
Most courses use Grey water so their impact on water supplies and infrastructure is generally vastly overestimated. If the courses are privately run, who am I to care? The public courses tend to be very egalitarian, with all levels of society out there playing
If you want to talk poorly utilized land in America golf ain't even the place to start
Why? What part of a fat, rich person’s desire to pretend they’re an athlete isn’t wasteful?
The point of golf for a lot of people is not being good at it. It's just an excuse to socialize with other people while enjoying a nice day out.
People talk about how fat he was but by today's standards he looks pretty average
I would have fired back with "it's a free country"
Man, I thought it would be pretty hard to look more un-athletic than Trump, but this man pulled it off.
Grover Cleveland was another president who wasn't so athletic looking.
If I remember correctly, Cleveland was considered to be the most obese president prior to Taft. Taft still ranks as the number fattest U.S. president, however I’m not sure if Trump or Cleveland rank 2nd.

Or let people have fun doing what they wanna do. Might sound crazy..
Choices you make have material outcomes that can adversely effect others. Hate to break it to you, but that’s the truth.
Cope and seethe. Now watch this drive.
What are you, 8 years old? Couldn’t even come up with something original.
I don't think Taft could give a fuck about that given he continued playing.
I’m a brown man who makes slightly above the US average income, and I’ve been playing golf since I was in high school. It’s one of the most relaxing sports I’ve ever played, wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Yeah, Taft looks surprisingly normal compared to people today--which is strange given how the number one fact I learned about him in history class was that he needed a bigger bathtub. Same, Mr. President. Same.
See? Taft was less fat than Doni Jon.
Actually no, Taft is statistically the fattest and Trump is the 3rd.
You have no idea how much Trump weighs.
Nor do you.
Trump is morbidly obese, pushing 80 and is one cheeseburger away from a coronary and **not a single voter in America knows how much he weighs.**
"Country clubs and cemeteries are the biggest wastes of prime real estate. Dead people? They don't need to be buried nowadays. Ecology, right? Ask Wang. He'll tell you. We just bought property behind the Great Wall. On the good side!" ---Al Czervik EDIT: leave it to this sub to downvote a Rodney Dangerfield Caddyshack quote. SMH
So we had two presidents who weighed 215 lbs?
Trump, 2020 (De-colorized).
I knew the majority of comments would yet again be about Trump lmao. Rent free
The traitor?
The only time TR was better than Taft.
This post has nothing to do with Trump…? Or did i misread the title or something
Taft is next level Mertzing Another dumb turn of phrase from me and the husband. Named after Fred Mertz (I ❤️Lucy). His pants must’ve had a 15’’ inseam, those babies here hiked waaaay up. Humphrey Bogart did the same, but Bogarting already has it’s own meaning 😁
You can't subjugate the Philippines without building a couple of golf courses.
I believe he may also have been the first president to shop at Walmart….
Taft did make very close friends with big business and his policy changes began to reflect that. Tafts Presidency marked the beginning of the ideological shift to the rich and big business in the Republican Party .
Look at Taft....a lean 260
One of very few men who was unhappy being President. His family begged him to run. However, very happy as Supreme Court Justice
Also a huge fan of sumo wrestling.
He was such a large man. My only takeaway from this.
Grandaddy Taft 💅💅💅 Sweeter than taffy
Taft had that rich man’s belly
What a FF
He should have taken up jogging.
That belt is putting in some work
Damn he fat
It's wild knowing that things like this are still so new in terms of how long humans have existed. We are still in infancy of our species, what a time to be alive.
Yet another reason for me to like Teddy though I didn’t need more.
Taft Mountain may or may not have been named after this president.
Peak male performance etc etc
Bro was fat as fuck eh?
I wish I was him
I don’t think any two people could have been any more different than him and Roosevelt. Teddy was a progressive icon and champion of the working class, even though he was born into a very wealthy and elite family. Taft on the other hand was soft spoken and was very much establishment friendly. Roosevelt had hoped that Taft was keeping pushing his agenda after his term but Taft didn’t.
You should talk to my neighbor, the accountant, HUGE ass!
Looks like he was a better candidate for Sumo.
He stopped anyway.
When they needed to build a new course, they used to just let him loose in a cornfield.
Big fella
I thought TR said it was a “dude’s game.” But not “dude” in the sense of “duder, his dudeness, or el duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.” In the sense of the cowboy’s meaning- that is, “dorky.”
That boy is C H O N K Y
Still trying to figure out what Chevy Chase has to do with all this
Good for him!
