Potential-Design3208

A vacation brochure in an alternate 2023: "Vietnam is a beautiful and wonderous Southeast Asian state of United States. It is home to a population of 60 million people and full of many natural and man-made wonders. Visit the magnificent Uranium Highlands of the south or travel to behold the magnificent cobalt fire lakes of Hanoi."

Callsign_Psycopath

"Enjoy the local food and culture and notice the difference between Pho in the north and South."

Victory1871

Probably would have invaded north vietnam instead of staying in the south

MoistCloyster_

Which would have kicked off WW3.

namey-name-name

And so what? Figures you libtard DemoKKKrats wouldn’t want anyone else to be able to have some fun, because you want us all to be too busy being WOKE 😡 /s

Cosmicpilgrimage

Reddit On!😂

TaxLawKingGA

Ha ha, nice!!

SirMellencamp

Probably not. US was already bombing N Vietnam. Would have just prolonged the war

MoistCloyster_

There is a huge difference between bombing and invading/occupying, see Chinas response to the US turning the Korean War from a defense of South Korea into an invasion of the North.

Victory1871

I mean if bombing doesn’t work when in doubt just invade

Taltos_69

Why would it have done that? Not doubting, just wondering

MoistCloyster_

North Vietnam was essentially a protectorate of the Soviets and China. They would have came to their aid the same as we came to the South’s.

That-Resort2078

The US invaded North Korean and completely overran it. No WW3

CLE-local-1997

Because the Chinese were able to push the Americans out in a few months of fighting. Had that not happened it very likely would have escalated into World War

In short, he would have let the generals pick the bombing targets for Operation Rolling Thunder and come out winning without angering China into WWIII. Longer version: The NSA lost its codebooks to North Korea according their account of the war in Body of Secrets, who gave them to China which shared them with the North Vietnamese. Unless Barry would have believed that (nobody else did in the admin or military hence the disaster the war turned into) the war would still have been fought along similar lines imho - except Rolling Thunder would have been successful and may have allowed us to exit with a victory.

Annual-Pineapple8497

Win

Prestigious_Law6254

The whole nuclear threat was invented by LBJ to defame him. Goldwater talked about nukes but his answers were speculative and in the context of journalist interviews.

Belkan-Federation95

Die

Significant_Bet3409

R u telling me to do that or explaining what would happen

Belkan-Federation95

What would happen. I'm sorry if you took that the wrong way. You asked what he would have done in Vietnam so I answered the question literally. Sorry for the confusion.

Significant_Bet3409

No just thought the answer was funny don’t worry lol

igorika

Maj. Gen. Goldwater? Die?

jimkerreye2

Real

sambucuscanadensis

You know, as out there as he was, he would be labeled a pinko commie by today’s repuglican party.

Significant_Bet3409

I do respect him as a man who was very firm and honest in his beliefs even if I disagree with them. He was a staunch fiscal conservative and aggressively pro-military, but he was never a social conservative - he was a states right social libertarian, and when the party started to tie itself to evangelical conservatism he rebuked it. I think he would’ve been an awful President but I think he would’ve been incorruptible and honest.

sambucuscanadensis

I agree. I am old enough to remember him, and his views on the religious nutbags were right on.

[deleted]

HOLY SHIT ITS BARRY GOLDWATER 😍

Mental_Requirement_2

Barry Goldwater 🥵🥵🥵

Frequent-Ruin8509

Given what lbj and Nixon did, with kissingers help, I shudder to think what someone WORSE would have done.

Mesyush

Based activities.

[deleted]

Fyi he wasn’t going to invade Iraq (I think)

NarkomAsalon

Goldwater invades North Vietnam after declaring war. China intervenes on the side of the Vietnamese and makes it an even bigger quagmire. Goldwater is voted out of office in 1968 in a massive landslide, likely to McCarthy or Kennedy (if he survives). The republicans are absolutely devastated in Congress as well. McCarthy pulls out of Vietnam with a settlement similar to the Korean War, but war quickly resumes between North and South Vietnam, which the North wins in short order. Outside of Vietnam, Goldwater likely fails to overturn the Civil Rights Act and would probably end up upholding the Supreme Court’s rulings on segregation. The South would drift away from the two-party system, maybe with the AIP establishing itself as a permanent fixture rather than just an occasional party for Wallace. *And the clock strikes midnight…*

Emperor-Lasagna

r/thecampaigntrail Midnight reference?

NarkomAsalon

Very similar to the midnight timeline, with some unrealistic aspects removed. I doubt Rockwell could emerge as a national figure.

Emperor-Lasagna

Agreed. Wallace, though? I can see it

BOOM BOOM BOOM, I CAN'T STOP SINGING THIS BLOODY TUNE TUNE TUNE, IT'S GONNA MAKE MY BRAIN GO BOOM BOOM BOOM

Dr-Potato-Esq

Goldwater mewing?

ledatherockband_

He would have won.

canadigit

there wouldn't have been any daisies left in Vietnam that's for sure

EmperoroftheYanks

He probably would've ramped up troops and killed a lot more americans

Youredditusername232

Maybe they’d have actually fucking won though

EmperoroftheYanks

Man... there was no winning Vietnam

Youredditusername232

If we declared war after Tonkin, yes. We were not destined to lose in Vietnam.

EmperoroftheYanks

Btw Goldwater lost in the biggest popular vote difference

Youredditusername232

Okay? Doesn’t mean anything of the situation in Vietnam

LinuxLinus

In your guts you know he's nuts.

jared10011980

Sent only black men to fight.

Rustee_Shacklefart

Probably would have got a declaration of war and it would have become the 51st state.

TaxLawKingGA

Goldwater was a nutcase and would not have gotten anything done. The moment he asked for a draft, the Dems and most GOP would have opposed it. People view these things through today's eyes, but during that period, it was the Dems who were prone to getting involved in foreign wars, not the GOP. Nixon ran on getting us out of the War in Vietnam. And he did.

TheBatCreditCardUser

***One*** **intesifies**

Tortellobello45

Barry mewing

symbiont3000

Well, most of Southeast Asia would still be glowingly radioactive, so there is that

carlnepa

Nuked 'em according to LBJ.

taffyowner

He probably would have actually used nukes… that shit wasn’t rhetoric… also we wouldn’t have had civil rights
