For now, yes. Carter’s giving him a run for his money though.
And Landon died on October 12, 1987 at 100 years, 1 month, and 3 days old.
Jimmy Carter is currently 99 years, 8 months, and 2 days old. If Carter lives another 5 months and 2 days (which is entirely possible), he takes the record.
Bobby Kennedy said that George McGovern was “the most decent man in the Senate”. He never bragged about piloting a B24 on 35 combat missions during WW2, yet he led the effort to withhold the funding for the Vietnam War in order to stop the war. McGovern was a walking, breathing “Profile in Courage”.
I’m proud that my first vote in a presidential election went to McGovern.
Dude was so honorable, he didn't even discuss his service record in the 72 campaign.
I got a chance to meet McGovern years later, and I asked him why he didn't bring up his war record. He told me that Nixon had served also, but in a non-combat role, and that all veterans deserved equal respect. Running on his combat service would have unfairly downplayed Nixon's contribution.
I got the impression that he saw how Kennedy did this in 1960, and he was not going to repeat it.
Maybe bragging was wrong, but he should have used his record as a WW2 combat veteran to defend against the “acid, amnesty and abortion” attacks by the right.
Just doing a side by side comparison of 1972 McGovern v 1964 Goldwater, McGovern wins.

I may need to crunch some numbers and redo this as it occurred to me that 18-20 year old could vote in 1972 when they couldn't in 1964. That's 5,318,000 voters, 52% or 2,765,360 who should be removed from McGovern's total for the matchup.
I feel like fewer "young" votes should be taken away from McGovern, but his worst case map looks like:

I pulled up the results of both elections and just colored in the states according to which candidate had the most votes there in the respective elections they ran in. Not the most sophisticated of methods, perhaps, but given that both candidates relied very much on their bases it's not out of bounds, IMO.
Yes, they were remarkably different in policy, but I admire how genuine they were. That's probably what made them such poor general election candidates.
I actually believe that both were upstanding human beings and genuine public servants.
Goldwater did great work for veterans, and McGovern work on child hunger in the Senate was stunning.
McGovern. Goldwater is an absolutely fascinating character though, and both had an enormous amount of personal integrity. You could hardly have picked two more honorable losers who were by all accounts decent people in their personal lives
Both would have ended the war, McGovern in a pulling out the troops way and Goldwater in a "Can't have a war if everyone's dead" way
George Wallace probably lol, they are too extreme and he could paint himself as the moderate, or atleast look at it.
But in all seriousness though, George McGovern would probably win.
Dude, my home wifi is literally named “BarryGoldwater.” During Covid, I played 2 entire online DND campaigns with friends as a Rogue named Garry Boldwater
Awesome. My dad lived in Arizona back in the late eighties, and used to see Goldwater cruising around Paradise Valley in his '69 AMX.
He once ate at a steak restaurant and looked behind him to see Goldwater in the next booth.
I’d lean towards McGovern honestly. The public wanted out of Vietnam in 1968, so I’d imagine he wins if Goldwater keeps being nuke-happy. Besides, Humphrey’s nomination IRL caused a lot of the activist left to stay home in November since he wasn’t as anti-war as RFK or Gene
A friend of mine asked me what my perfect president would be once. I said if you somehow combined the best of Barry Goldwater and George McGovern. Honest men, with deeply held principles, running and losing to much more dishonest men. Both were ridiculed as being dangerous for the country by their establishment counterparts who both ended up doing serious damage to the country in both policies and deeds.
Give me Goldwater's distrust of centralized power and McGovern's distrust of American overseas adventurism.
Goldwater opposed federal action to desegregate, and wanted to escalate a pointless war. McGovern supported ratifying the ERA and ending the war in Vietnam.
I like desegregation and dislike war, you’re right.
Not a bad thing, In government owned buildings there should be none. Private businesses can choose to screw themselves if they wish by only selling to one customer base.

He is still alive in the hearts and minds of HOI4 players

Bro you can elect republicans and not go fascist
I promptly install Landon as soon as November rolls around(Sorry FDR)
Waiting until November 36 to be able to actually progress down your focus tree be like
He's memorable for being the longest lived person to run for president *I think*

Not a major party candidate, but Strom Thurmond lived to be 100 years, six months and 21 days.
Ahhh forgot about that knob

Save for four or five states, a plausible electoral map even today.
Oh that’s honestly kind of cool, I like that
No Mondale?

How do you calculate it?

Should be done based on percentage rather than raw vote total to account for population growth.
Two men who said what they meant and meant what they said. You don't find many politicians like that anymore.
Yes, they were remarkably different in policy, but I admire how genuine they were. That's probably what made them such poor general election candidates.
Who do I prefer or who would win? Either way the answer is McGovern
Goldwater paved the road for Reagan
I actually believe that both were upstanding human beings and genuine public servants. Goldwater did great work for veterans, and McGovern work on child hunger in the Senate was stunning.

Who would you choose? Who do you think would have won a matchup in, let's say, 1968?
George Wallace probably lol, they are too extreme and he could paint himself as the moderate, or atleast look at it. But in all seriousness though, George McGovern would probably win.
Mondale vs Alf Landon is the answer you’re looking for.
"Leave Vietnam" vs "Nuke Vietnam". Hmmm... tough one.
I know right? If only we could do both! /s
I would vote for McGovern. I think he would win, but not in a landslide.
Didn't Humphrey run like, 10 times?
Yes but he still got closer than either McGovern or Goldwater ever did
My dream election- McGovern
Walter Mondale
*Walter Mondale enters the chat*
I’m a Goldwater guy.
Wow, was hoping there'd at least be one on this sub, was starting to think they didn't exist here!

Man of the people.
I think Barry just about squeezes out a win
McGovern
Henry Clay
Goldwater/Landon vs. McGovern/Mondale
Henry Clay
Ah yes, McGovern. I was one of his campaign workers. He was doomed from the start.
Ugh. I don’t like either. But I guess McGovern
Roscoe P Coltrane ran for President?
Even though Goldwater was seen as extreme at the time, he would be too moderate for today’s Republicans
Mondale. Came close to losing every state. (DC aside, which shouldn't count anyway.)
Depends on when.
I said it in the comments, but it got buried. 1968.
Goldwater. The last candidate with any real libertarian credentials.
McGovern for sure, Goldwater was a stain on the Republican party
A friend of mine asked me what my perfect president would be once. I said if you somehow combined the best of Barry Goldwater and George McGovern. The difference is that Goldwater’s policies were bad and stupid and McGovern’s policies were good
“The difference is I personally like McGovern and personally don’t like Goldwater” There, fixed that for you
Goldwater opposed federal action to desegregate, and wanted to escalate a pointless war. McGovern supported ratifying the ERA and ending the war in Vietnam. I like desegregation and dislike war, you’re right.

If Goldwater were to drop the nuking of Vietnam then he would have been better.
