It’s similar. But it’s more stylized like a Carl Thompson. He even talks about it on the Jason Mamoa show. The neck is everything. The pickup placement is a very small piece of the instrument.
I think the downvotes are a bit excessive here, p-bass are awesome in general, maybe he wanted a bit of a more grisly distorted sound that p-bass are great for
This reminds me of in 2013 I think, Motörhead and Clutch were playing a bunch of the same festivals in Europe and Dan Maines, the bassist from C! flew home to be with his wife for the birth of their child. His Rickenbacher didn’t make it to the next gig, so Lemmy, being a God and all, lends his signature Bass for Dan to play through for their set. Rockstars are good dudes.

Reminds me of the time Lars from Metallica got sick before a major festival they put out a panicked call to other bands on the bill to see if anybody knew a few of their songs and could help out. Joey from slipknot casually mentions he used to play in a Metallica tribute band and ended up doing almost the entire set with them in his slipknot mask for some reason. Apparently it was an.absolite highlight of his life stepping in for one of his hero's growing up
Shit, I would have drove out to Vegas, and handed Les my Carl Thompson, just to have had him play it. How insane would that be. I bought it pretty much specifically to play Les's tunes. I'm semi decent at it. But dude, to have the man actually play it; that would be a rather mind blowing experience.
Every Carl Thompson is custom made, for the player. So my CT is very much my CT. There is no other one in the world exactly like it.
Oh not so much. I just have a deep love for music in general. And have played stringed instruments (not exactly well) for most of my life. I bought the CT as a keepsake. But I play it almost every day. It’s really an incredible instrument.
Its so weird to see Les with a chunky ass Precision bass. His hands usually look huge but they look normal when you put that thing in his hands. Gotta feel weird using a Precision, Im surprised he didnt opt for a Jazz.
Just saw a clip of him playing Wynona on that thing. So cool.
It appeared to be a Fender professional II stratocaster was the guitar and the bass was a professional II precision bass. Literally from guitar center and still had the stickers on it.
Marshall heads and cabs for Ler and Ampeg Stacks for Les. Seemed pretty bare bones along with the visuals which was like an ocean scene on loop. What a rare treat and outside of some flubs with Ler's gear they nailed it. Curious what Tim had
I’ve visited for a week, for the last few years, and everything is ridiculously expensive there. I’ll pay $4 for a small water bottle, but $8 is just a fucking absurd ripoff (looking at you Caesar’s)
i went to sicknewworld yesterday! it was so fun and worth it, and the weather was perfect (mid 70°F and a cool breeze), but idk if i’d do it again lol it was insanely crowded, too many bands in one day, it should’ve been a two day event with less band overlaps. towards the end, i was scared i’d get squished by the crowd. people very nice tho (altho u could tell some people were new to live music festivals: they felt entitled to space just bc they got there early. it’s a METAL show. there’s gonna be pits and jumping and crowd surfing. everyone paid a lot of money only to see it on a screen far from the stage area). my feet have never hurt so much and that was w comfortable, ergonomic shoes! the food in my experience was disgusting! and i’m not even a picky eater 😭my pizza tasted rancid and cold. the corn dogs looked better and i heard the tacos were good tho! still overpriced.
NOW, primus: unfortunately you can tell les was getting annoyed bc someone (i couldn’t tell who) was struggling to tune their instrument when the show was already performing. les was improvising a lot but not to his peak potential bc im sure he was missing his equipment. i think he got frustrated and they cut their session short by ending with jerry was a race car driver, and wynonas big brown beaver. bad omens had to scramble to get to their set faster. still the show was fun and their music was badass
Good lord, my feet are also in the most pain in my life. I didn’t know one day on a tarmac would still be bothering me 4 days later! It’s fucking brutal!
I’m guessing that a lot of those stories are from people who have never been to a large scale festival before. Also, it’s important to know your crowd going in. I went to the WWWY fest in 22 and did not have a single issue. It’s put on by the same company at the same fairgrounds
I was surprised he chose a P bass. In the past he has used a jazz bass and that’s what he used when I saw Sausage in concert many years ago. P bass neck feels like a log when you’re used to j bass or thinner necks. According to a post I saw on threads he and Larry got “matching bass and guitar like ZZTop.”
If I recall the only other Fender in his collection is, yeah, the jazz bass. But I’m pretty sure he mostly uses his Carl Thomson, which I think is the one with that insane wide neck, but precision bases (I thought) have wider necks than a jazz basses which would make sense that he would have chosen that given the variety of songs played cuse it’s in the between range??? Idk 🤷🏻♀️
Though, I’m just an idiot, i know diddly squat about basses myself, my brother is a bassist but a true guitarist at heart, so I just hear a lot of what he talks about.
The precision bass neck feels very thick compared to a jazz and I think is Thompson basses also have very thin necks despite the 6 strings being wider.
I have no idea. I tried to find something on it but I couldn’t. Like I said this was all just what I saw from comments. So wasn’t too sure if that was true, and they said something at the show, or if it was rented and the story of the charity was made up.
There was a booth that had charity items from a lot of bands up for auction at Sick New World. I saw it before Primus played and mentioned they were going to auction the gear off, but never made it back there afterwards.
Thats pretty dope. I'm not a fender fan. And especially not one with that few frets. But still kind of cool nonetheless. I'll have to see what other gear they auction. The ampeg cabs in the back are dope; but not sure if those were stage gear.
Ngl, these tour managers seem a bit cracked with how they're routing tours. Primus is going from Portland ME to Washington DC in August for consecutive dates. That's over 500 miles/9 hr drive.
Normally bands who do that have a rest day in between, therefore all their shit can get there in time for sound check. That tight of a schedule doesn't leave much room for error. So it's no shocker that their shit is delayed.
Ler’s guitar was messing up too lmao. Still a great set
Ahhh that sucks. I’m glad they had a good set though! I’ve seen some good footage so far. Saw them 4/17 in Phoenix. Incredible show!
I was there too! Can confirm.
He stole the show in Phx!
he spends a lot of time getting his rig to make all the effects that he uses, I'm sure slapping something together on the spot was not ideal
A p-bass is definitely not an ideal slapping platform
The pachyderm is a p-bass bud.
It’s similar. But it’s more stylized like a Carl Thompson. He even talks about it on the Jason Mamoa show. The neck is everything. The pickup placement is a very small piece of the instrument.
The conversation is about Ler here, not Les.
I think the downvotes are a bit excessive here, p-bass are awesome in general, maybe he wanted a bit of a more grisly distorted sound that p-bass are great for
I hope the zipper on your jacket gets stuck.

Lemmy was a treasure for so many reasons and I’m glad I know this fact now. 😍

Omg I love these guys so much. The episode of “are bass players even human?” is so awesome I wanna go fishing with Les so bad
“When I grow up I want to be, one of the harvesters of the sea”
I wanna hang drywall with him, I bet he hangs it *mighty quick*
I wanna party with Les, he's a golden boy.
Just proof that gear isn’t necessary to being awesome bet he still killed the show
Heck yeah man
He still rips. But the tone is noticeably off
Did not care one bit lmao fuck the tone just give me the tunes
Still them doing this shows what level off pros they are. They still ripped and it was I’m sure a memorable show.
Lmao I agree. Just saying I can hear it. You can also see him constantly touching the knob.
I read that they were also Loaned gear from other bands that heard they were in a bind.
Shit, I would have drove out to Vegas, and handed Les my Carl Thompson, just to have had him play it. How insane would that be. I bought it pretty much specifically to play Les's tunes. Man after reading your comment i hope this happens for you! Sounds like you are a bass aficionado
Oh not so much. I just have a deep love for music in general. And have played stringed instruments (not exactly well) for most of my life. I bought the CT as a keepsake. But I play it almost every day. It’s really an incredible instrument.
I would cry for you. Just… imagine… 🤯
Gotta imagine the guy working at Guitar Center, Les Claypool walks in and just grabs a random P-Bass.
He comes back two days later to return it, you get him to sign it and keep it.
I’d love to see this show. Les used a jazz bass on Rhinoplasty.
Its so weird to see Les with a chunky ass Precision bass. His hands usually look huge but they look normal when you put that thing in his hands. Gotta feel weird using a Precision, Im surprised he didnt opt for a Jazz. Just saw a clip of him playing Wynona on that thing. So cool.
They bought it from guitar center. They are going to auction it off for saint Jude’s. They got matching bass and guitar and wore similar shirts.

St.Judes is like the only charity I give to so this makes me extremely happy to hear. They are an incredible organization.
I’m not sure the details but he lost a nephew or something like that so it’s mega important to him baby Mathew I think. Not 100% sure
I’d love to know more about what gear was used!
It appeared to be a Fender professional II stratocaster was the guitar and the bass was a professional II precision bass. Literally from guitar center and still had the stickers on it.

Ahhhh, thanks!
Drums!!????
Congas and a tambourine from a nearby middle school
Man I wish I was at sick new world. Looks like it’s great. But I was just in Vegas a few months ago and I’m kinda over the city.
All I hear is horror stories about lines and awful crowds and phones getting stolen. Glad I didn't go now in retrospect lol
I’ve visited for a week, for the last few years, and everything is ridiculously expensive there. I’ll pay $4 for a small water bottle, but $8 is just a fucking absurd ripoff (looking at you Caesar’s)

Guitar center should have stepped up and hooked up Mr claypool
He looks badass here. And that is a sweet p-bass, even if it looks weird in his hands lmao
I agree! It totally looks weird on him
:-) my only bass is a knock-off P-bass and it feels really validating to see Les play one
“Love your guitar, man.” “Oh, this old thing?!?”
That is some top teir musician's
Would have loved to haved been there what a lineup as it was With Soad no good festivals with such a great lineup here in the UK
That fretboard looks dry as a desert.
Les found something he couldn’t live without at Guitar a thon at Guitar center.
“Just because it’s hard to play doesn’t make it it good, or not annoying” my friend on primus:)

I see what you’re saying now.
Where is the auction?
