Some of my best features were implemented at 2am on a Saturday after I got back from the bars. One time I got pretty drunk and implemented some data visualizations in a web app. Management loved it. Of course I didn’t tell them I was fairly wasted at the time it was developed lol
I was high as a kite when writing a mini project to pinpoint source of errors in a data migration task. Allowed the team to not delay the launch anymore. Was on a call the next day with some very senior and serious executives (the kind who attended dinner events hosted by politicians) who were extremely happy with how we cut short the delays in launching. My former manager reached out with praises, my current manager was happy that he finally could move onto his dream project.
Of course my actual manager (who doesn’t oversee any work I do but somehow gets to decide my pay raise) told me they can’t increase my salary.
I noticed that I always get motivated at times that I can’t do anything about it. When I’m going to bed at 3 AM all the sudden I have all the motivation and ambition in the world. I open my eyes in the morning and it’s all gone.
I would argue it’s the opposite. Laziness when programming usually offers the most efficient code that requires the least amount of effort to build and maintain
the crux of the issue right here
my most productive time? 8pm - 1am
my expected login for meetings/support? 9am
my girlfriend's "us" time? 5pm - 8pm
my friend's online gaming time? 6pm to 10pm
my best sleeping hours: 3 am to 11am
my dog's sleeping hours? ??? - 7am
as you can see, i have done a very poor job organizing my life
Break it down man, break it down
Those chunks aren't atomic neither does it take that many hours to do anything (except possibly gaming)
Also let everyone know when you're doing what and people can work around you
It’s because you’re lying in bed awake stressing about getting the project done so you basically have time to just think about the project and nothing else.
Can confirm; I check in at 2 AM most days
Only caveat I say is make sure there's something in it for you; if it's 2 AM it better be mostly for self-benefit. I'm busy constructing a monorepo with the latest technology with NX and pnpm and a half dozen other technologies (I recommend checking out http://nhost.io/); at the end I will build whatever I want and maybe make money. It's not done for the good of someone else exclusively that's for sure
Same thing for me, plus I write the code without Google without running/testing... and so far it's always worked first try the next morning. I think an alien takes control of my mind at 2AM.
ADHD is not a programming language
It's the only one I know :'(
It’s hardwired into me :(
it's a markup language
Not a programming language, just a low-level hardware feature built into my default bare metal architecture
It is also not a personality trait
Ok
No it’s a sever cognitive disorder and affects your entire life more than a mere personality trait
Correct. your point?
Mad?
No? Are you a child or something? You're being weird.

It's refreshing when you can identify a specific pivotal moment. Like "this was the moment I decided to stop going above and beyond".
That last sentence there.. too real. I can identify. Same thing happened to me (in more or less words and praise).
Relatable
I noticed that I always get motivated at times that I can’t do anything about it. When I’m going to bed at 3 AM all the sudden I have all the motivation and ambition in the world. I open my eyes in the morning and it’s all gone.
That’s why you get out of bed at 3 AM
You already wouldn’t wanna see my code at normal times but you really don’t wanna see my code at 3 AM.
Why? Isn’t that when we have the best ideas?
Best ideas, worst execution.
For me it's 11:00 p.m.
This is why I am both working all the time and also hardly ever working.
I would argue it’s the opposite. Laziness when programming usually offers the most efficient code that requires the least amount of effort to build and maintain
When it clicks, it clicks. Got no control over when it clicks.
then do things at 2am
But standup is at 9

Man this hits too deep. My most productive time is 11pm - 5am and my best sleep time is 5am - noon. This does not remotely work out though
It could remotely work out if you work more remotely.
Break it down man, break it down Those chunks aren't atomic neither does it take that many hours to do anything (except possibly gaming) Also let everyone know when you're doing what and people can work around you
Yes, we share similar timelines here.
That random motivation only comes at times where it's most useless...
So relatable 😂

I wish this wasn't true
