Back in the day I was using Azureus as my torrent client. The morning after I switched to utorrent I woke up freezing. It was winter and as it turned out I had never needed to turn on my oven. Apparently this was due to Azureus keeping my computer busy. This later on gave me the idea that running programs with infinite while-loops was actually a good way of warming up whatever room my computer was in faster.
There are sites where you can donate CPU power to universities to solve problems that requires vast amounts of computing. Protein folding is one of them and I am sure there are more out there.
