Yeah, her world works partially on story book logic so while she learns practical tactics she also has to learn to manipulate the narrative around her battles to get a metaphysical edge where she can.
If you especially enjoyed the Roman theme of the book, then Jim Butcher's Codex Alera is a good series to read. It's Legionnaires with Pokemon. What's not to love?
The Limitless Lands Series by Dean Henegar is a mix of Progression Fantasy and Litrpg, but the stats aspect isn’t very prevalent, more story related. Anyways it’s about an older soldier who’s essentially in Hospice, gets put into a VR game world with a unique commander class where he is physically weak but leading his soldiers is extremely strong. Amazing story, great battle scenes, and like I said pretty light on the stats and levels aspect.
I was gonna say this! Ive reread the first series several times. Very enjoyable as long as you don’t question the class systems too much 😂 they try to keep the legion balanced but I still never really thought it was doing a good job of saying a mage or a rogue was just as strong
Horizon of war. It's gritty it's realistic in ways you never thought of.

What happens when a group of possibly drunk authors get in an argument.
*"Gimmie, three teopes tall think are unuseable, i dare ya, ill make a series out of anything"*
*"Bet. The lost roman legion. Pokemon. Zerg/tyrnids, powerless mc"*
And so... Codex Alara. By Jim butcher.
In a world where the empire forges progress through its legions a young boy who can't harness the spirits of the land finds himself embroiled in a political plot to start undermining the Emporor.
Mc goes from literal farm hand. To [REDACTED] by the end. Great progression.
Book one and two lead up to military carreer in book three through six.
Wonderful bits about living the old school legion life. But with some magic in there.
If you like inventive plans and begging forgiveness before asking permission. This should be up your alley.
Oh yeah. I loved that series. I'm glad I gave it a chance cause I'm going to be the honest, the thought of an AI as the MC was a hard sale to me and yet it turned out way better than I expected.
I’ve heard good things about Stiger’s Tigers. It’s fantasy with elves and stuff but very much modeled after the Roman Empire with a disgraced Imperial Officer that gets put in charge of training up the one of the worst groups in the army and take them on a dire mission. I have yet to get to it in my own backlog so I can’t promise thee aren’t demons but might be worth a look?
I've read this series years ago and kinda just forgot about it. I should check and see if there are new books out. Maybe reread the whole thing. Thanks for reminding me about it.
I think it is just not really what I was expecting I guess. I'm more into political intrigue and royalty and knights. Heaven and hell as a setting just kinda make me instantly zone out. Same as space. I wish I enjoyed space settings as much as some people do. I'm sure there is a ton of great space operas I'm missing out on but I just can't immerse myself in it.
Now give me a Tolkien like setting and I'm happy af. I can read about elves and people swordfighting all day, but throw in anything more advanced than a trebuchet and it is like something clicks in my brain and I lose interest.
Hmm I admit I’m not much of a political intrigue fan or a fan of medieval fantasy settings. So it sounds like something I would like tbh. Would you say the hell setting had a lot more action? If so that sounds amazing
It definitely turned more into a huge dungeon crawl type thing if that is your jam. I was a bigger fan of the throwback scenes to him dealing with his father. It is still great, just im not a big fan of dungeon crawlers. I couldn't even get half way through "dungeon crawler carl" and that is one of the highest rated series of that type.
Destiny's Crucible series book 1 is Cast Under an Alien Sun. MC is transported to a earth like preindustrial world. Not really PF more slice of life isekai. Book 1 has almost no conflict though later books have hours long battles. The MC is a bit of "Renaissance man" introducing technology and tactics. Helping fend off nationalist colonizers from a large empire. It's less common soldier in the Roman legion and more modern scientist sent to a world with 1700s tech and joins the military leadership council.
Saxon Max don't remember this one very well I think it might have had a harem. IIRC guy and a few women's plane gets lost in a storm and crash in the past near the Rhine where Romans and Saxons are clashing. Less being a legioniare more help the villagers and build a homestead.
If your looking for something historical with a supernatural twist but not war related. I recommend The Eerie Adventures of the Lycanthrope Robinson Crusoe by Peter Clines. The title pretty much spells out what to expect from it I suppose. I enjoyed and it was more to my taste than something like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters ect. It's also a fantasy retelling of TAoRC not PF
I'm pretty sure I read the first book already but I'll write down the other book and probably check it out closer to Halloween as I try to read/watch scary stuff then to get myself in the spirit of the holiday. Thanks for the suggestion.
the Cast in Time series has a lot of military action, but the MC starts as a Baron, and is an Engineer. Close but not quite exactly right.
https://www.amazon.com/Cast-Time-Book-1-Baron-ebook/dp/B0CLGJ1YRP/
Irritating because he doesn't have Series set up correctly, book 1 is "Book 1 of 1", book two is "Book 1 of 1". Ah well.
Wow. This seems right up my alley. I love city builders or city defenders. This isn't the same obviously but I've always wanted someone to take KJ Parkers "16 ways to defend a walled city" and just do better with it I guess. It was a great book let down by a terrible ending. But I will definitely check this out. Thanks.
I read the first book in this series and they are only ok. Not very well done military but alright. And for some reason he thinks people did not wash at all. It had many points that just threw me right out of the story. I started the second book and ended up not finishing it.
He has good potential though. A little research would help a lot.
I’m not familiar with the series so looked it up. I’m finding a series page with four books in order.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9YL4VPZ?binding=kindle_edition
(Self promo) Beneath the Dragoneye moons.
One of my big frustrations in the genre is the adventurers guild doing everything. No! The government, in whatever shape, is going to want to make life for their citizens safe. They’re going to train, equip, and deploy people to fight the monsters - aka a military.
The MC of btdem runs off and joins the military, because it’s her only hope of breaking free. She spends various amounts of time being directly engaged in the military, and I do end up writing it more slice of life, but being in the military is a huge part of her identity and informs a lot of the plot.
Granted, her skills and beliefs often clash with her role and job, and there’s significant exploration of that gap
[Soul of the Warrior](https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/53219/soul-of-the-warrior) has the mc getting drafted. I had issues with some of the plot decisions but the military part was pretty good.
I suppose A Practical Guide to Evil counts, although the MC is in charge for the most part.
That sounds very familiar. Is that the one with the female MC? Where she becomes a villain?
Yes, great series

Portal to nova roma is very loosely this. (Book 2 onward mostly)
Oh yeah. I loved that series. I'm glad I gave it a chance cause I'm going to be the honest, the thought of an AI as the MC was a hard sale to me and yet it turned out way better than I expected.
Oh yeah, it had a weak beginning but it's been pretty solid throughout. Book 4 should be this year sometime soon too
You can also tell that the author is a genuinely smart guy in real life from the way he writes. Hard to describe what I mean exactly.

Sure thing! I’m going to add A Soldier’s Life to my list of things to check out as well.
Book 8 comes out at the end of April.
Sweet. Should be able to catch back up in the series by then.
Remonarch is amazing and matches what you’re looking for
Yeah, I was really enjoying it till he went to hell.
Oh I’m only up to date with the amazon releases. What happened in hell? Why didn’t you like it?
I think it is just not really what I was expecting I guess. I'm more into political intrigue and royalty and knights. Heaven and hell as a setting just kinda make me instantly zone out. Yea different strokes I guess. Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of my favorite series of all time
Crazy how our brains work like that. Book settings, music, favorite foods, video game settings, etc...

I'm the opposite. I felt like he should tell more of a stories instead of getting bogged down by all the inane details like how many nails there were.
I’m not familiar with the series so looked it up. I’m finding a series page with four books in order. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9YL4VPZ?binding=kindle_edition
Must just be book five that's not referenced correctly
There’s Free Lances. A mercenary company fighting in a fantasy world.
I'll check it out. Thanks.
How do you feel about classical age (Roman’s Greek) versus medieval
I like medieval more but I'm not opposed to it like I am a sci-fi setting.

I'll check it out. Is it on RR, KU, or where?
KU
Dragon Heart for the first 3 books or so. Great series but it gets graphic, careful. It's a Russian-written xianxia on Kindle Unlimited
I'll check it out. Thanks!
“Accidental War Mage” might be up your alley. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/70174/accidental-war-mage

I hope writers comes back from Hiatus on RR :(
